Dear friends,

It’s interesting that one of the most popular and iconic Christmas songs was written by a Russian Jewish immigrant for a Broadway musical revue. But then again, the song’s writer wasn’t your average composer. Perhaps no other writer has ever captured the American spirit in song quite like Irving Berlin. Many of his more than 1,000 songs are classics, including “Easter Parade,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and “God Bless America.”

And although the Broadway revue was never produced, it ultimately became the 1942 film Holiday Inn, starring Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby. Berlin anticipated that the song for Valentine’s Day, “Be Careful, It’s My Heart,” would be the film’s hit song. But months before the release of the movie, the song “White Christmas,” performed by Bing Crosby, made its radio debut. The song wouldn’t be widely heard again until October 1942, when Crosby released it as a single prior to the opening of Holiday Inn. At first sales of the record were disappointing, but several weeks later, it was topping the charts. In time, it would become the most successful single ever, selling more than 50 million copies.

Following the success of Holiday Inn, Paramount decided to use the song in 1954’s White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Vera-Ellen and Rosemary Clooney. It was enormously popular and was the highest-grossing film of the year.

It’s thrilling that this timeless holiday movie is now a stage musical. I saw an early production of the show in San Francisco in 2004 and the subsequent Broadway production in 2008, and I love it. In general, I’m attracted to big, old-fashioned musicals with great singing and dancing. Those elements—plus the holiday theme—make this production irresistible.

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is a presentation in our Willis Broadway Series. All of us at Des Moines Performing Arts wish you and yours the very best this holiday season, and we hope you enjoy the show!

FROM THE CHAIR

Dear friends,

Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center and to the Willis Broadway Series.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our loyal season ticket holders and to our donors whose generous gifts are the foundation for all we do. We truly appreciate your support.

In addition to the Willis Broadway Series, Des Moines Performing Arts presents The Dance Series, the Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series, and three offerings within the Prairie Meadows Temple Theater Series – the Temple Comedy Series, Live at the Temple and Lunch Unplugged.

The staff and board take great pride in making our four venues performance homes for our entire community, including the Des Moines Symphony, StageWest Theatre Company and the SmartTalk Connected Conversations Series. To embrace our roots, we welcome local artists, dance studios, students and more onto our stages each year.

Des Moines Performing Arts is also a national leader in theater and arts education. More than 50,000 students attend curriculum-connected performances in our facilities each year. Teachers learn to incorporate the arts into traditional classroom topics. The new Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards are elevating and showcasing the work of high schools and their students.

As a non-profit organization, Des Moines Performing Arts requires your help to make all of this happen. We ask for your support as a donor and appreciate your help in creating a world-class performing arts center.

To learn more about attending any of our performances or about making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call (515) 246-2300.

Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show!

DES MOINES PERFORMING ARTS

Smiles, laughter and applause often fill the venues of Des Moines Performing Arts – not just during a show night or matinee, but during the school day as well.

Thanks to generous support from our donors, Des Moines Performing Arts community engagement and education programs, like the Applause Series, bring the magic of live theater to thousands of Iowa students and teachers each school year.

One of the fundraising initiatives that helps subsidize the Applause Series and other Des Moines Performing Arts education programs is the Willis Lexus Drive for Kids, currently in full swing. Willis Lexus matches up to $15,000 of donations made to the campaign. Since the Willis Lexus Drive for Kids kicked off during the 2008-2009 season, more than $320,000 has been raised.

“Driving dollars for Des Moines Performing Arts’ education programs like the Applause Series has been an incredible experience for Willis Lexus,” said Willis Auto Campus Dealer Principal Rich Willis. “We are proud to sponsor a campaign that inspires, invigorates and possibly changes the lives of young theater-goers.”

The Willis Lexus Drive for Kids fall campaign ends December 31 and will start up again in spring 2014. This season’s fundraising goal is $30,000.

“Having a partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center is extraordinary,” said Des Moines Performing Arts Education Manager Karoline Myers. “Through the affiliation, we are able to utilize national-level resources and planning strategies on a local level.”

Karen Erickson, a Kennedy Center teaching artist and frequent guest instructor in Des Moines, believes that educators integrating arts into their everyday curriculum is critical for students. “If we can change a teacher, that teacher will then touch the lives of many, many students,” she emphasized. “So we look at that as being a way to improve, to change and to transform education.”

Erickson also emphasized that emerging changes in technology over the last decade have significantly influenced how students learn in the 21st century. “We need people who are creative thinkers, who can put things together in a new way and who can solve problems. We don’t do that by teaching in the way we have done in the past.”

Bagley is thrilled to be part of

Des Moines Performing Arts and Des Moines Public Schools professional development program. “It is an awesome experience to learn more about arts and how I can integrate them in my own classroom, but to also serve as a resource for other teachers when they ask, ‘What can I do about this?,’” she said. “It is a great way to collaborate with others.”

During an educator workshop on arts integration this fall, Heather Bagley volunteers for what seems like a simple exercise.

Assigned to act out a sentence about a little boy walking up the stairs to an empty house, the Riverwoods Elementary School teacher repeats the task again and again as her fellow educators add more details and description to the original sentence to make her performance more interesting. The exercise was an example of how drama can help deepen students’ reading and writing skills.

After the exercise, Bagley reflected on her experience. “It was a great opportunity for me to get out of my comfort zone and to think of teaching in a different light,” she said. “It gave me an opportunity to challenge myself and be creative in

front of my peers.” Bagley is one of dozens of Des Moines

Public Schools educators who are part of a professional development program throughout the school year that teaches them how to integrate arts – drama, music, dance and visual media – into core subject areas like reading, writing, science and arithmetic. By doing so, educators create learning conditions that are highly engaging and illicit higher level thinking skills from students, making the learning deeper and longer lasting. Furthermore, arts integration helps students develop essential skills of creativity, critical thinking, communication

and collaboration. The program, jointly

presented by Des Moines Performing Arts and Des Moines Public Schools, is part of a formal partnership through the John F. Kennedy Center’s Partners in Education.

In his day job, Bruce Pomahac is the Director of Music for The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization. He also was the Vocal and Dance Arranger for White Christmas. Here, Bruce talks about Irving Berlin’s “newest” musical. HAPPY TALK: The movie of “White Christmas” is such a beloved favorite. Does that help or hinder the challenge of turning it into a live stage production? BRUCE POMAHAC: Oh, it helps. Even people who haven’t seen the movie have a “vision” of it. This is based on their knowledge of the songs (especially the title song), the movie musicals from the golden era which they have seen and enjoyed, and the images of this film and others like it which - in the form of clips and media bites - have continued to live in our culture for the last 50 years.

People bring all of these “memories” to the theater, and, whether they are aware of it or not, it affects how they react to what is essentially a brand new experience. HT: White Christmas has a pretty great collection of songs to start with, but it still needed a few more numbers to turn it into a full-blown musical. How did that process work?

BP: Songs are exclamation points in a musical like White Christmas. When you get to a number it has to deliver the goods. For sheer entertainment, no one does this better than Irving Berlin did. Often the challenge was not what song we were going to find, but which of several would be the best choice. [Co-librettist] Paul Blake and later, [co-librettist] David Ives and [director] Walter Bobbie did the choosing, and did it brilliantly, I think. Then it became the job

54

55

of the music team to make the songs fit seamlessly into the cloth of the story andthe production. HT: As you wove the interpolations in with the movie songs, what sort of style did you and [orchestrator] Larry Blank find yourselves working toward? BP: The decision was made from the get-go to keep the sound of the music in the post-World War II big band era vernacular. We approached every number as if it were being created, arranged and performed in that time. HT: New songs require new arrangements, right? BP: Right. The orchestra has to be big, in order to cover all the emotional

bases. The choral arrangements have to thrill. The singing actors and actresses must enthrall us. This is a big order. The arrangers have to pull out all the stops and a cast and orchestra need to be found who can put luster into every note and chord. This is the show biz magic that White Christmas celebrates. HT: You mentioned a big orchestra. White Christmas was arranged for 24 pieces. Is that unusual for this day and age? BP: It is rare that any theater producer feels he or she can afford to hire more than the minimum number of players required by the musician’s union for a pit orchestra. On Broadway today that can be as few as twelve players, or even fewer. Kevin McCollum understood the power of expression a full orchestra could bring to White Christmas, and he was determined to have a big band with a string section from the start. I couldn’t be happier. There is no substitution for what a full orchestra can add to a musical production.

HT: Bruce, you worked on the screen-to-stage transfers of Meet Me in St. Louis, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s State Fair and now, White Christmas. Obviously, you believe that great movie musicals have great stage potential too. BP: Absolutely. For one thing, if they’re done right, they should feel more like a new show than a revival, and I think that these three have each met that test. The hardest part about recreating the past is making it exciting once again. White Christmas doesn’t so much take us back to another time as it entertains the socks off of us right now. In a world that can find as much irony in the good old days as it can in today’s headlines, I think this is the secret and the surprise of Irving Berlin’s and White Christmas’s brand new success.
