Dmitrij Baibikov joined a bit laterwith some informations still missing and many new re ords of his own.Fellow retroanalysts Nikolai Beluhov, Andrew Bu hanan, Mi hael Grushko, Henrik Juel, MarioRi hter, Bernd S hwarzkopf kindly provided missing informations, orre tions and/or new re ords. The idea of the ompilation ame from the work of Mario Ri hter andWerner Keym, who ompiledthe e onomy re ords in "last single move" problems. The problems are available on the ex ellentwebsite of Otto Janko, who also set up the retro mailing list, whi h is an invaluable link with otherretroanalysts.Gerd Wilts has made another website of interest, whi h ontains thousands of hess problemsand was used as a referen e for a lot of material in this booklet.Andrew Bu hanan, the inventor of Dead Re koning, proposed to put the problems in a ni edynami al presentation on his website. Be sure to pay him a visit, he has olle ted many subje ts ofinterest to retroanalysts.Last, but not least, i owe a spe ial debt to Yves Talle who was very patient and tried to explainme what a hess problem is. 2 Introdu tionIntrodu tionThis small booklet is about retrograde analysis in hess. This is a kind of problem where thesolver has to explore the past of the game in order to answer the question. A very simple retrogradeanalysis problem is C3b where the last single move is a promotion to bishop.A single move is, as you may have guessed, a move made by one player only. For example 1.f3e5 2.Kf2 Qh4+ 3.Ke3 Qd4# ontains 6 single moves (it's also the only game nishing by 3... Qd4#and was found by Fran ois Labelle). We say that a single move is ompletely determined if we knowexa tly what pie e has moved (or pie es in the ase of astling), where to, where from, and alsowhi h enemy unit was aptured if su h is the ase. So we must know exa tly how the board wasbefore every single move.We will interest in problems where we an nd out as many previous single move as possible. All problems in the booklets are length re ords (as known to us) for a given number of pie es, ieno known position with less pie es allows to nd as mu h previous single moves. If two positionsshare the same number of pie es and the same length, the preferen e goes to the one minimizingthe number of oÆ ers (Q, R, B, N), then to the one minimizing the number of heavy oÆ ers (Q,R), then to the one minimizing the number of queens. If both positions are still similar, the onepublished rst (or re eived rst in my mailbox) will have the preferen e. Anyway, if spa e allows it,i will try to publish ex-aequos. That's why you an see B4b omposed 2 months after B4a and alsoB4 whi h has one oÆ er more. The problems are lassied in 6 dierent types, as shown in page 1. Type A, B and C are almoststandard in retro analysis, but type C was modied so as to have a omplete separation betweentypes (a partition), whi h was not the ase with the previous denition: "One kingmay be in he k."In the duplex type there's one solution assuming White has played last and another one assumingBla k has played last. If the rst move of both solutions is similar it's alled a type DD problem. In ase both lengths dier, the overall length will be set to the lower value.Type E and F were not lassied before, but again we have a partition based on the presen eor absen e of an un olored pie e atta king both kings (this may prove tri ky with pawns). In RexMultiplex no27, Andrey Frolkin mentioned that E15a, E15b, F4a, F4 and F5 were of type C(histori al denition?).The hoi e of possible last moves is larger in type A problems than in type D or B, and in typeD or B than in type C. That's why type A problems are usually preferred. In the same way type Eproblems are preferred to type F problems. The table on page 3 shows a summary of the known length re ords up to now. The number inthe rst olumn is the total number of pie es on the board. Then there is one olumn per problemtype. For a given number of pie es and a given problem type, the orresponding ell will ontain alength only if a problem with that number of pie es improves the pre eding re ord for this type. One shall note it's easy to reate a type B problem out of every type A or type D problemswithout hanges in the number of pie es, that's why you may have an A or D letter in the B olumninstead of a number of moves. It's also possible to reate a type B problem out of a type C problemby retra ting the last he king move (unless it's an en passant apture or a astling), but it may hange the number of moves or the number of pie es, so this time the modied problem is repeated. The informations on erning a problem, su h as date of publi ation, name of magazine,et . aregiven alongside the solution of the problem. Also when a problem derives from another one i triedto give the original problem in FEN notation with full redits.

Older Problems 19Older problemsThe following problems were added be ause the number of pages needed to be a multiple of 4.Another reason is be ause those problems were either spe i ally designed with the length re ord inmind by people who helped me with the booklet (I, II, III, V, VII and VIII), or they may have anhistori al value in my limited knowledge (IV, VI, IX, X and also the sour e of II).While the rest of the booklet is obje tive (as long as the problems are not proven to be ooked),this part is not. Making a full history of the re ords is far above my abilities and i only hope the hoi e of problems made here won't hurt any feeling. In su h ase i (Alain Brobe ker) am the onlyone responsible and i am very sorry for this.
