PA GE 24 DAILY MIRROR, Thursday, September 6, 1979LIVE GLettersMUMMYWAS AMYTH!JAMES B. ARCHER, Norton Conyers, Ripon, N.

Yorks, writes:R ECENTLY you told a reader that he wasright in thinking that the liner Titanicwas carrying an Egyptian mummy on its ill-fated maiden voyage. I'm afraid this is ah oldmyth. The object in question was a mummy-case of a priestess of Amen presented to theBritish Museum about 1889.This case has become the centre of manyweird s tories including responsibility forthe sinking of the Titanic! However, in 1934 Sir Wallace Budge, Keeper ofEgyptian Antiquities at the Museum, published adetailed refutation of all these tales. He ascribed theirorigin to the late Mr. Douglas Murray and the late Mr.W. T. Stead, who had said, in print, that the expressionon the face on the coffin lid was that of "a living soul intorment" and wished to hold a seance with the purposeOf remov ing the an guish from th e face. The story snowballed and it was rumoured that, because of the "curse" associated with it, Sir Wallacesold the mummy-case to a wealthy American who

shipped it on the Titanic.Somehow the AmericanWas supposed to haverescued the case but itscurse cont inued so hesold it to a Canadian. Thelatest owner, experiencingSimilar evil happenings, decided to send it back toEngland but it was lostwhen the Empress of Ireland went down in the StLawrence River. That , roughly is thelegend. The fact is thatthe mummy-case neverleft the British Museum. It is still there. But themyth persists, for it issaid to give people an oddfeeling if they examine ittoo closely. In case you wish toexperiment, it is exhibitnumber 22542 in the Second Egypt ian Room.

Thanks, James, butwe ' l l t a ke yourWord for it!Another point which nodoubt contr ibuted to themy th was tha t W. T.Stead, a prominent journal ist and Spiri tual ist ,was himself drowned onthe Ti tanic .
