President’s Message As DMA begins its new program year, a big

thank you goes out to Scott Hutchason and

the outgoing Board for leaving our

organization in such excellent shape.

Membership grew last year by a net of 25

to 297. Our financial condition is sound.

We have healthy participation in our

activities, including several that were

initiated in the past year or two.

Of special note, our communications

efforts have progressed considerably

over the past year. Ray Meurer and his

team have enhanced newsletter

development, including electronic

distribution. The newsletters are chock

full of information about upcoming

speakers, new member profiles and

activity updates. Those who prefer

hardcopy of the bimonthly newsletter may pick one up at the Membership Desk on Wednesdays.

Also thanks to Ray, we now receive timely emails with news and updates regarding speakers,

activities and events. If you have any items for email distribution, please let Ray know.

Similarly, Gary Banks has led the effort to evolve the DMA website in terms of added content and

easier navigation. We plan to continue the emphasis on making our website ever more useful and

user friendly for our members. Ray and Gary both are looking for “new blood” to join them in

these efforts. If you have an interest in participating, please contact Ray and/or Gary.

We have another slate of excellent speakers lined up for the coming year thanks to John Wolcott

and his committee. The speaker calendar is fully booked through December, with many dates in

the winter and spring also booked.

Some of you have asked if spouses may attend just the speaker portion of our meetings from 10:45

a.m.-noon. The answer is “Yes.” Starting September 6, spouses are invited to do so. However,

you and your spouse are urged to carpool because parking is limited. Spouses can wait in the Guest

Waiting Area just off the foyer during the business part of our meeting or leave and return at 10:45

a.m. to hear the speaker.

Let me conclude by thanking all activity leaders and their committee for their hard work and

contributions to making DMA the jewel that it is. I look forward to a year filled with fun and

fellowship.

Tom Lom, president

Events and Activities

Annual Cookout

Alex Garnett reports that 230 members and spouses, including 15 widows, attended the annual

cookout June 15, 2017 at Weed Beach. Weather was perfect. Food was great. A good time was

had by all. See photos of the event at the end of the newsletter.

Bowling

Tom Lom reports that after a summer respite, bowling will restart Tuesday, September 5, 2017, 9:15

a.m., at the Nutmeg Lanes, Fairfield, Conn. All are invited to join in.

Bridge Tony Kwedar notes the Bridge group continued to meet through the summer months. Members

get together Tuesdays, 1 p.m., at St. Luke’s Church in the library. The cards will be shuffled and

dealt as usual in September and October.

Veterans Honored at Award Ceremony

Wartime Service Ribbons were presented to 21 DMA veterans on May 17, 2017, by Lt. Col. Sean

Connolly, Commissioner of the State of Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs, and Darien

First Selectman Jayme Stevenson. Medal recipients included John Barston, John Bartlett, William

Bellis, Richard Constable, John Davidson, Thomas Dunn, Alex Garnett, John Geoghegan, Stephen

Gravereaux, Kent Haydock, John Hess, Frank Johnson, Gerrit Lydecker, Albert Metayer, Charles

Scribner, Edward Spurgeon, Lawrence Story, Howard Thompson, Peter Wells, Thomas Williams

and John Wolcott.

Hiking

Sunil Saksena says he is planning three hikes for September and October. To encourage broad

participation, two will be relatively easy. The third hike will involve a higher level of difficulty

and will appeal to the more experienced hiker. The hikes are planned for September 15, October

6 and October 27. Time, place and other details will be announced at the DMA meetings. As

always, spouses are invited to join in.

Photo by Harvey Mogenson The last hike in the spring was at the Babcock Preserve in Greenwich. It is a 300-acre tract of

forested land north of the Merritt Parkway.

Community Service

Jack Fitzgibbons said DMA members marched in the 2017 Darien Memorial Day Parade and that

there was a good turnout for the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive despite the

rainy weather. It is one of the largest events of the year for Person-to-Person (P2P) in Darien. The

drive helps keep the food pantry stocked for the summertime. Darien residents leave bags of

groceries at their mailbox to be picked up by volunteers for delivery to P2P to be unloaded, sorted

and shelved. Jack notes that other Community Service activities during the year include Darien

Spring Cleanup, Repair of Darien Christmas decorations and Bell Ringing at Palmer’s

Supermarket. No activities are scheduled for September or October at this time.

Book Club

Harris Hester reports the Book Club will discuss The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien on

Wednesday, September 13, 12:30 p.m., at the Mather Center library. A classic work of

American literature that has not stopped changing minds and lives since it burst onto the literary

scene, the book is a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination and the

redemptive power of storytelling. On October 11, 12:30 p.m., at the Mather Center library, the

club will discuss Killers of the Flower Moon: the Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by

David Grann. The New York Times called the book “… disturbing and riveting. ... Grann has

proved himself a master of spinning delicious, many-layered mysteries that also happen to be

true. ... It will sear your soul.” Both books are available now at the Darien Library. Look for

them in the reserve section behind the main desk.

Computers

Ed Mulock and the Computer group took the summer off and will meet again starting September

12 and every Tuesday after that at 10 a.m. in the Mather Center computer room. Ed always enjoys

helping DMA members with any computer-related problem or question.

Golf

Photo arranged by Tom Lom

Denny Devere and Peter Carnes organized three terrific golf outings with wonderful

camaraderie in June, July and August. Venues were Sterling Farms, Woodway Country Club and

the Country Club of Darien (CCD), shown above. Each outing was very well attended and

recently saw 28 DMA members teeing off at the CCD. Overall, it was a great summer of golf for

our members. For September, Peter is looking into organizing a golf outing at Sterling Farms.

The date and tee time will be announced later.

Current Affairs

Jim Phillips reports that the Current Affairs group will discuss “Comprehensive Immigration

Reform: Challenges and Problems” on Thursday, September 28. The discussion leader is

Charlie Goodyear. The Current Affairs group meets at 8 a.m. in the Lillian Gade Room, second

floor, Darien Community Association. The focus of the discussion is to talk about information

that is relevant, not to debate the pros and cons of an issue. The discussion leader maintains this

focus and posts reference material on the DMA website that participants can read prior to the

meeting.

Happy Wanderers

Photo arranged by Gregory Glashan

John Barston, Joe Spain and Taylor Strubinger led the Happy Wanderers on two wanderings

in May and June: City Island, shown above, and the Hudson River Greenway. Starting in

September 2017, the Happy Wanderers will hold their events on the third Tuesday of the month to

avoid conflicts with other DMA activities. On September 19, the destination is the Walkway

across the Hudson River followed by lunch at the Culinary Institute of America. The walkway is

a former railroad bridge that was turned into a walking bridge connecting Poughkeepsie, N.Y.,

with Highland, N.Y. On October 17, the wandering will be in Central Park. On November 21,

the group will wander Chrystie Street and Second Avenue starting from the Manhattan Bridge.

Committee members will fill in more details at the Wednesday meetings.

Speakers September-October

Wednesday, September 6, 2017

Lennie Grimaldi, an award-winning journalist, will talk about his new book, Connecticut

Characters: Personalities Spicing Up the Nutmeg State. Lennie’s book chronicles 40 years of

spicy personalities, from political chili peppers such as John Rowland and Joe Ganim to pop

culture cloves Linda Blair and Ed and Lorraine Warren. He also describes in colorful detail Hells

Angels and certain mobsters – and he takes the reader on a journey into the underbelly of cities

and to the wooded terrain of wilderness warriors. He covers the FBI and Donald Trump, too. When

19-year-old Lennie tried to land an exclusive interview with 18-year-old actress Linda Blair

following her arrest on drug charges, he camped out near the women’s bathroom at a Westport

bar. “The Exorcist” star gave him the interview. When Lennie needed color for a Connecticut

Magazine profile of mobster Frank Piccolo, Lennie crashed Piccolo’s wake. When Bridgeport’s

sweet-and-sour Police Chief Joe Walsh refused an interview request, Lennie sent Walsh a singing

telegram – and got the interview. These stories and more are

chronicled in Lennie’s most recent book that captures four decades

about some of Connecticut’s most intriguing characters. Lennie is an

award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in hundreds of

newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, TV

Guide, Yankee magazine and Connecticut Magazine. He also served

as a media consultant to Donald Trump in the mid to late 1990s.

Lennie is the founder and host of the webzine Only In Bridgeport,

devoted to government and politics in Connecticut’s most populous

city. He also wrote Bow Tie Banker, a biography of David Carson,

retired CEO of People’s Bank, and Chased, the life of mob infiltrator

Billy Case. Lennie is the author of Connecticut Whistle Stops:

Greenwich to New Haven and Only In Bridgeport, An Illustrated History of the Park City.

Correctional Institution, Connecticut’s only women’s prison, for

several non-violent crimes that remain on appeal. While she was

incarcerated, she published a book of poetry, Up the River: An

Anthology. Chandra was the first inmate to write a newspaper

column from behind bars, called “Prison Diaries.” The column is

now is a blog that updates weekly with a new “diary” entry. “Prison

Diaries” was honored by the Webby Awards and won first place in

criminal justice reform. Her written commentary has appeared in

The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New York

Times Magazine, USA Today, US News and World Report, The

Washington Post, Quartz, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, The Hartford Courant, The

Ute Wartenberg Kagan, J.D., executive director, American Numismatic Society, will present a

fascinating account of arguably the most valuable coin in the world – the 1933 $20 gold Double

Eagle, which last sold in 2002 at a Sotheby’s auction for $7.6 million. This bizarre and mysterious

saga begins in 1933 with the Gold Confiscation Act and ends in

April 2017 at the U.S. Supreme Court. The intriguing tale

includes alleged smuggling from the U.S. Mint, King Farouk of

Egypt, shady coin dealers, government agents conducting a

“sting operation” and, of course, a few lawyers. Dr. Wartenberg

Kagan’s primary research focus is on ancient Greek coinage, and

she has spent most of her academic career in the museum world.

From 1991 through 1998, she worked as the curator of Greek

coins in the British Museum in London. Since 1999, she has been

the executive director of the American Numismatic Society in

New York. Educated in Saarbrucken, Germany, Dr. Wartenberg

Kagan was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where she

received her doctorate in papyrology. She has published more than 50 books and articles on

numismatics and papyrology, is a recognized public speaker, and is frequently interviewed for

newspapers, radio and television. In connection with her active interest in current U.S. coinage,

Dr. Wartenberg Kagan has testified about coin design before the Senate Banking Committee and

has been appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury to various coin advisory committees.

Help Wanted DMA Newsletter is looking for help in writing articles about our speakers. The speaker write-ups

describe what the speaker will talk about and information about the individual’s background.

Much of the information is provided by the speaker, but additional information is gathered by

browsing the Internet. Contact Ray Meurer, [email protected] or phone (203) 853-8036.
