De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) is now 84 percent subscribed to renewable energy (RE) from Bac-Man Geothermal Power Plant in Bicol via a retail agreement with First Gen Energy Solutions Inc. (FGES).

In line with its sustainability efforts, DLSL has opted to utilize geothermal power, a renewable energy source producing lesser greenhouse gas emissions (as compared with traditional coal-fired plants).

As a contestable customer for around four years, DLSL is eligible to select its retail electricity supplier based on the EPIRA Law provisions – having consistently consumed more than one megawatt (1 MW) per month over a

12-month period. DLSL has a retail supply contract (RSC) with FGES for two years, with an option to renew thereafter. In addition, FGES committed to support DLSL’s sustainability efforts as part of their value-added services. In line with this, Batangas Electric Cooperative II (BATELEC II) is now considered a distribution utility.

Of all the schools within BATELEC II’s franchise area, DLSL is the only one that has switched to a renewable energy source as of the time of writing. Likewise, as of June 2016, the only contestable Philippine La Salle schools included the following: La Salle Greenhills, Health Sciences Institute, De La Salle University-Manila, De La Salle University-

Dasmarinas, and College of St. Benilde.

First Gen is a clean and renewable energy company with an installed capacity of 3,470 megawatts. It is a subsidiary of Lopez-led First Philippine Holdings Corporation (FPH), one of the oldest and largest conglomerates in the country.

De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) High School Basketball Team has once again landed on top of the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) Division 2, making DLSL the winningest team in NBTC’s three-year history, March 23 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

DLSL’s Green Chevrons, led by Head Coach Jrex Atienza, proved their agility in the hard court as they beat their opponents from Colegio San Juan de Letran Bataan, 49-44, during the championship game. Ian Abila reigned as NBTC Division 2 MVP and Best Defensive Player, while Raphael Dimayuga and Abila were hailed the Mythical Team.

Before the championship match, NBTC had an All-Star Game involving the country’s top high school players. Four of Lipa’s players, Ian Abila, Raphael Dimayuga, Lawrence Platon, and Stephen Javier, were chosen to participate in the Division 2 All-Star Game. Raphael Dimayuga, a Grade 12 student, was awarded MVP of the All-Star Division 2.

NBTC holds local qualifiers across the country, with the local champion advancing to the regionals. For three straight years, DLSL represented Lipa in the National Finals. Lipa’s pride likewise garnered the Division 2 championship title in 2016.

Startup founders, innovators, students, academicians, business mentors, and other interest groups gathered during the soft launching of the Nexus Innovation Labs, March 14.

Managing Director Marrione Camacho led the unveiling of its facilities. This was attended by DLSL’s Board of Trustees, advisory board members, administrators, partner organizations, startup mentors, and student groups. The event likewise highlighted an exclusive tour of the facilities and equipment demonstrations.

Nexus Innovation Labs is a startup incubator and multi-functional hub. It serves as a center for collaboration and innovation. Likewise, it aims to create a sustainable impact on society through entrepreneurship and relevant programs.

Anchored on DLSL’s four strategic directions, Social Innovation in

Quality Education, Sustainable Futures, Shared Humanity, and Stakeholder Engagement, Nexus Innovation Labs will deliver four strategic outcomes that will hone technical skills, will foster competencies in social innovation, will promote collaboration, synergy, and network building among stakeholders, and will enable it to scale social impact. From these outcomes, it has established four key programs: Creativity and Innovation, Global Citizenship, Collective Impact, and Nexus Ventures.

In delivering these programs, Nexus will build five labs: N Camp Design Lab, N Able Makers Lab, N Vision Creativity Lab, N Space Coworking Lab, and Bloomberg Financial Markets Lab. These labs will complement existing and future academic programs.

Nexus Innovation Labs Unveiled

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students presented their Community-Based Action Projects Addressing Strategically Themed Learning Objectives through Networked Environments (CAPSTONE), March 23, 2018 at the SENTRUM.

A total 89 groups (five to six groups per section) from 15 sections took part in the said exhibition themed “Grade 12 STEM CAPSTONE: Tugon sa Panlipunang Hamon”. Each project focused on a specific community concern grounded on the sustainable development goals (SDGs) – from affordable and clean energy, good health and well-being, climate action, clean water and sanitation, and zero hunger.

Barangay officials from Calansayan, Sto. Cristo, Banay Banay I, and Poblacion II, Galamay-amo, together with representatives from partner schools Padre Imo Luna Memorial Elementary School and Taysan National High School witnessed the presentations. One project per class was then selected for implementation in the respective communities.

Lasallian Partners converged during the three-day Education Summitto assess and plan for DLSL’s future.

LPs Convene at Education SummitMore than 150 Lasallian Partners (LPs) gathered to address concerns faced by educators, students, and De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) as an institution during the Education Summit, a two-part convention and workshop on February 27 to 28 and March 23, 2018 at the CBEAM Function Hall.

Subject matter experts from various areas of education delivered keynote talks. Br. Armin Luistro FSC, President of De La Salle Philippines, emphasized on the changing landscape of education. Sr. Cora Manalo DC, AFSC, DLSL Board of Trustees member, highlighted on 21st century learning perspectives and challenges. Dr. Bjorn Santos, President of De La Salle Araneta University, on the other hand, focused on schools’ roles in establishing cities of the future with the Salikneta Farm as role model. Lastly, Mr. Jay Jaboneta, Yellow Boat Foundation Founder, tackled on the foundation’s best practices, specifically when it comes to technology’s impact on the lives of the less fortunate.

Br. Dante Jose Amisola FSC, DLSL President and Chancellor, moreover, shared about education and technology’s role in strengthening society. He likewise stressed on DLSL’s role in addressing the digital divide, in creating an impact on students’ and

LPs’ lives, and in getting involved in the city’s development.

Following the keynote talks was a plenary facilitated by Dr. Glenford Prospero, Director of the Institutional Digital and Innovative Instruction; Dr. Edgar Allan Castro, Dean of the College of Business, Economics, Accountancy and Management; and Mr. Marrione Camacho, Nexus Innovation Labs Managing Director. Their discussions centered on DLSL’s present and future social innovation endeavors.

To guide the LPs in creating their roadmaps, consolidated results of the workshop were developed by the Office of Research and Publications. The discussions focused on areas such as ways to bridge the identified gaps, the students they want to graduate, the skills and competencies they need or want to have, and the courses and programs DLSL needs to develop.

The Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) / Home Economics and Livelihood Education (HELE) Department recently introduced aquaponics to Grade 8 students.

Aquaponics involves utilizing waste products of aquatic creatures (such as small fish) as nutrients to grow plants. The grown plants, in turn, purify the water resulting in a cycle of symbiosis.

Through the nutrient film technique (NFT), students learn how to cultivate plant and fish using this effective system. The technique utilizes a minimal stream of nutrient-rich water routed through the roots via a tube, gutter or channel which greatly aids in the growth of the plant.

The DLSL aquaponics greenhouse can be found in between the Hacienda and Mutien Marie Hall. It will be fully enforced by School Year 2018 - 2019 along with its self-sustaining capabilities courtesy of solar power.

Aquaponics Introduced toIS Students

Aquaponics will serve as one of the exploratory subjects of the Grade 8 students.
