Dynamic Learning v2 Tutorial 08: Toolbox, Notes and

Bookmarks

Using the Toolbox

The Toolbox is provided to enable

you to mark up screens.

To open the Toolbox on the main

window, click on the blue toolbox

icon at the foot of the screen. You

can hide the tools and any

annotations you have made at any

time by re-clicking the icon, or by

using the ‘close’ button at the top

right of the Toolbox.

When the Toolbox is open, all

interactivity, rollovers, zoom, page-

to-page side navigation etc, cease

to function. The Lesson Builder,

Search, the Page resources menu,

and foot-of-screen navigation,

however, continue to work.

Hover over the info button at the

top of the Toolbox for a reminder

of how it works, and over any of

the individual tools to see what

they do.

The Toolbox, being Flash-based,

does not work on iPads.

Using the Toolbox on a resource window

Sometimes, you’ll also want to use

the tools on an open resource

window, which may contain a

diagram or image. To do this, click

the Toolbox icon at the top left

corner of the resource window.

The toolbox icon and its

‘Show/Hide’ tooltip

Use the close button

to remove the

Toolbox

Closing or hiding the toolbox

Please note that if you close the resource window, the

Toolbox will close and your annotations will be lost. If

you want to clear all annotations without closing the

resource window, use the Delete all shapes and

annotations button.

A selected tool is always indicated by a green

highlight.

Using the Pen tool

The Pen tool – which is always black until you choose

another line colour - can be selected in order to add

freehand lines and annotations to the page.

Using the Highlighter tool

Selecting a new tool de-selects the previously selected

one.

The Highlighter – which is always green when you first

select it - allows you to highlight any element of the

screen or popups you have open.

Choosing another line colour

You can choose another colour for the highlighter by

selecting it, then using the Line colour selector.

Reselecting the highlighter tool resets its original

colour.

The line

colour

selector

Adding Shapes

Use the Square and Circle tools to add shapes to maps

or diagrams, or to frame particular areas of the

screen. First select the square tool, then select line

and fill colours, then drag out your shape.

Swap line and fill colours

You can change these settings for the circle or square

drawing tools using the Swap line and fill colours

button.

You can also select ‘no fill colour’ in order to draw just

the edges of the circle or square.

Moving shapes

If you need to move a shape or highlighting to another

part of the screen, select the Move shape tool, click

on the item in question, and simply drag it to its new

position.

Adding text

To create and position a caption or instruction on a

page, you can use the Add text tool provided.

The text box you create will have a white background.

You can select the font, size and colour of the text

itself once you have created your textbox. To do this,

you highlight the text and select from the drop downs

that appear at the top of the textbox. You can also

increase the size of the text box using the handle at

the bottom right corner.

Whenever a new text box is created, it appears with

‘Enter text here’ already in place. You can highlight

these words and overwrite them with your desired

text. After each text box is created, the tool is

deselected and the pointer tool is selected. Click again

to create further text boxes.

Using the Eraser

Clicking on the Eraser tool allows you to rub away

specific elements of annotations you no longer wish to

appear onscreen.

Making recordings

Click the Microphone icon on the Toolbar to go

directly to a website where you can download the free

recording software, Audacity, and download the

users’ manual for the program.

Deleting individual shapes

If you wish to delete individual shapes you should

select the Scissors icon.

As you hover over each item to be cut, its state will

visibly change. Then click on it to delete it.

Deleting all shapes

If you wish to remove all of your shapes from a

screen, click the Delete all annotations and shapes

icon. You will be asked to confirm that you definitely

want to delete everything before this command is

carried out.

Moving to a new page

If you click to move to a new screen, the Toolbox and all your annotations will automatically be

hidden. You can get them back again at any time by clicking again on the Toolbox icon.

They will only be lost when you navigate away from the title, or close your browser window.

Making Notes

Sticky Notes provide a more

permanent way to personalise

your Dynamic Learning lessons.

They can be used to add

reminders, or links to web

addresses.

For some DLv1 Flash-based

menu screen or pages titles, it

continues to be possible to add

these Sticky Notes to the pages

of your choice. Go to the screen

where you want to make a

Note, and click the icon at the

bottom of the screen.

Please note – Flash pages can’t

be viewed on iPads, and Notes

are therefore not available

either.

Creating a Note

When this toolbar appears, click

the ‘Add a new Note’ icon on the

left of the Notes toolbar.

Adding text and saving your Note

To start typing your Note, just

click in the heading space or the

body text space.

You can enter any text into the

Note itself. When you have

finished, click the pencil icon to

save the Note. If you start a new

Note, the text of the previous

one will automatically be saved.

You can now drag it to wherever

you want it.

Opening a web link on a Note

Web addresses can also be

added, and these create

hyperlinks that you can use to

open external websites in a new

window.

When you save the Note, the

web link becomes live. Simply

click on the link and the website

will open.

icon to save

and edit your

Hiding and revealing Notes

It is possible to minimise a Note,

or you can minimise all the

Notes on the screen at once, by

clicking Minimise Notes.

Similarly, you can choose to

Hide or Show all the Notes on

the screen at any time.

Deleting Notes

You can delete just this Note, or

all the Notes you have made. If

you choose the latter a warning

message will appear before any

permanent deletion.

Printing your Notes

It is also possible to print out a

record of all the Notes you have

added to a title. Click the Save

all Notes as a Word document

icon and you will be asked to

save the file. It will then

automatically open in Word,

providing you with a record of

your entries.

Closing the Notepad

To close the Notepad, click the icon at the bottom of the screen again. As you

move between screens the Notes that you have made will remain visible

unless you choose to Hide Notes before closing the Notepad.

Bookmarking a page or resource

Use the Bookmarks icon

whenever you want to leave a

permanent marker that you can

return to.

On the page you want to

bookmark, click the blue

bookmark icon at the foot of the

screen.

Bookmarks work equally well on

DLv1 and DLv2 titles.

Adding a bookmark

Click the Add bookmark button

to add a thumbnail of the page

to your collection of bookmarks.

Naming and describing your bookmark

You’ll need to name your

bookmarks, and you have the

option to add a more detailed

description. Up to 8 bookmarks

of those you’ve added to a title

will be visible at a time, and you

can access them from any page

within that title.

Renaming or deleting your bookmark

You can rename or delete your

bookmark using the pencil icon

or the dustbin icon, and move

the order in which they appear

by using the up/down arrows.

You can also hide the bookmarks

by clicking again on the red book

icon.

Please note that you can only

add one bookmark per page or

screen.
