Founded more than 150 years ago in Yokohama in 1865 by Her-mann Siber and Caspar Brennwald, DKSH today is a major contrib-utor to culture and business in Japan. Our strong roots result in the unique way we do business, where the cultures of Japan and Switzerland – of Asia and Europe – harmoniously complement one another.

We have learned to steer a clear course between these two dis-tinctive cultures, bringing the best of both worlds together to serve the ever-evolving needs of our business partners. Our reputation is founded on consistency in partnerships and long-term engage-ment and we are proud of our employees who are still driven by the same pioneering spirit that inspired our founders.

Japan is a sophisticated and complex market with high barriers to entry for western companies. Regardless of company size or geographic location, and no matter whether consumer goods, specialty chemicals and ingredients for food and cosmetics, or ad-

vanced machinery are involved, our DKSH specialists have a deep understanding of the way business in Japan works.

At the same time, we assist Japanese companies to sell their prod-ucts in overseas markets, making full use of our brand strength and comprehensive network across both Europe and Asia. For Japanese and European companies alike, we provide the ideal mix of sourcing, research, marketing and sales, distribution and after-sales services to help them achieve their expansion goals.

We are continuously enhancing our capabilities across the entire value chain to maintain the trust invested in us. It is a privilege to serve as a bridge between east and west and an honor we work hard to retain.

I would like to thank all our business partners for their continued support and trust in DKSH.

Welcome

“It is a privilege to serve as a bridge between east and west.”

Dr. Joerg WolleRepresentative Director & Chairman of DKSH Japan K.K.

Bringing a wide variety of global brands to Japan

Our services For Business Segment Luxury & Lifestyle, DKSH’s services are:

Diversifying distribution channels As the exclusive distributor, we work hard to raise the awareness for each of our cli-ents’ brands. Our marketing activities are based on a disciplined and long-term ap-proach as we work together with our cli-ents to enhance each brand’s profile.

We provide them with tailor-made solu-tions for the selling, marketing and distri-bution of their products, using insights into what customers and end-consumers want to market the brand. In providing these ser-vices, we adapt our clients’ original brand philosophy and concept, applying them in a consistent manner to reflect local market needs. For over ten years we have run retail operations, including three flagship stores, to better serve our clients in this competi-tive market.

Ensuring customer satisfactionWe possess a fully-fledged after-sales ser-vice and quality assurance system to en-sure customer satisfaction. Our customer service operations provide a point of con-tact for end-consumers as well, promptly answering inquiries fully and accurately. In-quiries range from new products and sales outlets to handling instructions.

Quality technical supportThe role of our technical employees is to protect the quality of our clients’ products in Japan, a consumer market ranked as the world’s most discerning and demanding. Our technical service specialists play a piv-otal role in marketing, consumer relations and ensuring customer satisfaction.

The team is responsible for the careful maintenance of our consumers’ prod-ucts and selling appropriate accessories. They also support marketing and sales, explaining to customers the construction and mechanisms, as well as other points of the products we handle. If any incon-sistencies are uncovered with the products we receive, our technical service specialists will contact clients to establish an improve-ment plan.

Building brand experiencesAs well as diversifying distribution chan-nels, we also take on the challenge of providing and developing unique market-ing services and platforms. In June 2016, we opened the first LAMY flagship store outside of Germany, on Aoyama Street in Tokyo and, in April 2017, we opened the world’s first flagship store of TIMEX in Harajuku, Tokyo. “Faber-Castell Tokyo Midtown” was designed following the im-age of the first company store in Frankfurt, Germany and is the first Faber-Castell flag-ship store in Asia.

At all three of these flagship stores, we have created an atmosphere for visitors to truly experience the unique world of each brand through its original services and communication with customers.

DKSH Business Unit Consumer Goods draws on more than 150 years of experience and operations in Asia to provide high-quality services for global brands. Leveraging our mar-ket expertise, we are proud to introduce a selection of outstanding brands for which we have steadily built brand profiles and increased market share. Sourcing servicesWith local teams strategically located across four continents we enable access to the world’s finest suppliers. We provide compliance management, product regis-tration, supplier auditing and certification, quality assurance and on-site monitoring of trial production runs. Through standard-ized processes and integrated IT platforms we provide fast and reliable feedback for complete customer satisfaction.

Regulatory servicesCompliance is a main priority for DKSH and employees at all levels. Our compliance division employs specialists with expertise in the food and beverage, personal care, pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals in-dustries to ensure that DKSH observes and adheres to every applicable law and indus-try regulation in the countries in which we operate. With a regulatory team in each country dedicated to safety, environment, quality and regulatory affairs, we protect our clients’ businesses globally and ensure that every transaction is completed with-out interruption.

The team in Japan has close relationships with suppliers and local offices so it can en-

sure, upon the start of a business project, that every applicable law and regulation in the country is observed. The team is also engaged in business support for clients in other countries, providing them with crucial information regarding laws and regulations. For example, in collaboration with team counterparts in Lyon, France, regulatory services provide information concerning REACH, regulations of the Eu-ropean Union governing the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals.

Intellectual propertyOur patent infringement checking proce-dure is one of the reasons customers have full confidence in us. We perform intel-lectual property checks to ensure a stable supply of products for our customers and avoid any potential infringement of patent rights.

In the pharmaceutical industry, for ex-ample, it is essential for all companies to check the risk of patent infringement be-fore starting a business. Despite taking precautions, a number of companies in the field still find themselves involved in patent disputes. We minimize the chances of this

by making sure there is no potential patent infringements as a measure complemen-tary to checking operations conducted by manufacturers of active pharmaceutical in-gredients (APIs).

Patent infringement checking at DKSH is characterized by the following processes: • Checking procedures and related doc-

umentation are systematized ensuring only products that complete our internal processes are supplied to customers

• We systematically investigate patent rights concerning APIs so that no patent fails detection

• Depending on the type of project, we seek expert support from our patent attorney or specialists of our contracted law/patent firms for in-depth scrutiny

Caspar Brennwald was a co-founder of DKSH Japan. The Brennwald diaries consist of 548 pages in five volumes and covers the day-to-day events of his 16 year stay in Japan – from October 10, 1862, to Feb-ruary 2, 1878. The original manuscript and related materials are held by the families of the company founders in Switzerland and in the Swiss Federal Archives.

Caspar Brennwald arrived in Japan at the young age of 24, as the Secretary of Com-merce with the first official Swiss industry and trade delegation. Yokohama had just opened its port to foreign trade and was becoming a hub of commerce. The diaries cover the construction of modern factories for the silk industry and the establishment of a gas company for the gas-light system.

The diary also offers insights into the cos-mopolitan nature of correspondence at the time, which was conducted mainly in Ger-man but also in French, English, Italian and Dutch. Historical records of Yokohama in early Meiji are rare as most of the related documents written by foreigners were de-stroyed by war or fire.

Working in cooperation with the Yokoha-ma Archives of History (located in Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture), DKSH Japan has been engaged in a project to translate the Brennwald diaries in their en-tirety into Japanese. As the birthplace of the company, Yokohama has always been special to DKSH and by doing this we hope to return something to the city.

With its completion, the Japanese transla-tion of Brennwald diaries will not only be a record of DKSH’s history, but also reveal

significant historical facts about early mod-ern Japan, including details regarding Yo-kohama’s time of first contact to the West.

The project was launched on January 2008 and the translation project team includes eleven historians.

When the earthquake and tsunami oc-curred in December 2004, DKSH helped rebuild an elementary school which was se-riously damaged by the tsunami. In Japan, after the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, employees volunteered their time to help the restoration of their com-munity. Some employees cleared debris, while others helped rebuild the damaged

fishery facility in the Tohoku area. After the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, DKSH deliv-ered earplugs as relief supplies to 20 of the shelters to help those affected sleep as well as possible, despite the uncomfortable en-vironment. DKSH Japan further supported this work by granting compassionate leave to employees who wanted to volunteer.

DKSH Japan established the DKSH Fantree Scholarship Foundation to help students who have lost their parents continue their academic pursuits. The fund was estab-lished through generous donations con-tributed by DKSH employees, with match-ing donations from the DKSH Group and from Diethelm Keller Holdings.

With support from the prefectural govern-mental office and high school principal’s committee, DKSH Japan started the schol-arship in the summer of 2011. This schol-arship covers monthly payments for spon-sored students’ high school and university attendance, for a maximum period of nine years. In addition to the monetary support, we maintain a close relationship and dialog with our sponsored students.

Since its inception, DKSH Japan’s development has been closely connected with the his-tory of Japan. Hermann Siber and Caspar Brennwald founded their trading compa-ny in Yokohama in 1865, when they were young men in their twenties. Their compa-ny seat, Yokohama Ko 90-ban Kan, conve-niently named after its address, soon es-tablished itself as the heart of Japan’s silk trading activities. The company later went on to help set up the gas-light system for Yokohama and

Ginza, as well as importing watches and machinery from leading Swiss manufactur-ers. It was renamed Siber Hegner & Co. in 1910. Its reputation as a trading company grew rapidly despite several setbacks: a ware-house fire, several wars and the Kanto earthquake in 1923. The company’s surviv-al is indeed testimony to its resilience and adaptability. The firm entered a new era in 1932, when the company’s headquarters moved from

Yokohama to Zurich, Switzerland. Siber-Hegner Holding Ltd. continued to grow, opening branches throughout the world and becoming an important player in key markets. On the company’s 100th anniver-sary in 1965, it was formally incorporated in Japan as Nihon SiberHegner K.K. After becoming part of DKSH Group in 2002, the company changed its name to DKSH Japan K.K. in April 2009. Today it contin-ues to play a significant role within the DKSH Group.
