Presentation of Certificates to Personnel Practice and Sales and Marketing part-time students.

Certificates were presented last Thursday evening by Institute President Denis Cummins to lifelong learning students who successfully completed two continuing education courses over the past year.

First up were students who successfully completed the Government’s Labour Market Activation (LMA) supported Certificate in Business in Sales and Marketing course. The LMA programme financially supports educational and training providers like DkIT to run educational courses for people who have lost their jobs due to the recession. Courses seek to enhance jobseekers’ confidence and skills so that they will be better able to benefit from labour market opportunities as they return.

Certificates were also awarded to students who completed the Certificate in Personnel Practice, a course that prepares participants for a career in human resource and personnel management and is certified by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD).

Oh the weather outside is frightfull, but the radio is so delightful, and if you’ve no place to go, listen to the show, listen to the show listen to the show! Shocking weather we’re having eh? Good job you have the lads to warm your hearts. This week it was Ros, Iarla and Jim Jim keeping you company beside the fire, the rest of the team were hampered by weather and illness. Or they were just having snowfights, we’re not sure.

So this week is mental health awareness week in the college and there is plenty on. Keep your eye out for Lily the panda who will be roaming around the campus giving hugs and free stuff. Yeah that’s right, free stuff, and hugs! What more could you want? And for those of you asking, it will not be Iarla in a panda costume. We all know how Iarla loves the costumes, but alas it is not to be.

The Student Union clinics will still be held in the Carrols and Nursing building during the week following great success with previous dates, so keep an eye out for James and David who will be in the main entrance of the Nursing building and in Starbucks to listen to your complaints, suggestions and anything else you need to see them about. Also the tickets for the Christmas Ball are on sale at the SU office for €8 so make sure you head down and get yours, it’s sure to be a standout night in the college year with everyone in fun filled Christmas spirit, and sure don’t we all need a bit of that these days!

Next up was a very special, topical feature from our resident fact fountain Iarla. In previous weeks, we had Iarla’s fun 5ive facts. But that ship has sailed dear listeners. So this week, we brought you, wait for it......Iarla’s Super Snow Facts! Yay. So there are 3 different types of snow (who knew). We have powder snow, snowball snow and slush. Knowing the difference between your snow is vital in any snow themed combat ladies and gentlemen. Iarla also gave us his flawless guide to building the perfect snowman. So know you have no excuse!

After that of course we had Jim Jim bring us this weeks movie reviews. Due Date and The American were the two films in discussion this week and both got shining reviews from Jim Jim which means they are definately worth a watch on a Tuesday evening for the Student Special. So head down to Dundalk Cinema on a Tuesday with your student card to avail of the €4.50 ticket!

So that’s it for this week folks. Be sure to tune in next Monday when we have a bumper radio extravaganza coming at you. Maybe that was slightly exagerated but still, it’s going to be big so make sure you listen! It will be a magic show with a number of hot features, so it’s not to be missed!

So until next week, slow down and keep it straight people! And remember you can contact us via our FaceBook page, or our email [email protected]. And our podcasts are available too, for instructions just go to dkitalk.ie .

Finance software firm with Dundalk roots wins €100k business prize

Barracuda FX, a software solutions provider to leading global banks which has firm roots in Dundalk, has won the overall prize of €100,000 in an InterTradeIreland competition for high growth businesses.

Prior to starting Barracuda FX, CEO Kieran Fitzpatrick participated in the Enterprise Start Programme at the Regional Development Centre in Dundalk Institute of Technology. Subsequently, he completed the Centre’s Novation Enterprise Platform Programme (NEPP) in 2008-’09. NEPP is the Regional Development Centre’s flagship enterprise development programme for technology start-ups.

Now employing some 20 people at the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in Dublin, Barracuda FX provides trading and risk management software solutions to international banks. Its innovative Foreign Exchange Order Management System gives banks complete control and confidence to significantly transform their Foreign Exchange business by increasing revenues, reducing costs and removing operational risk.

Sean MacEntee, Manager, Regional Development Centre, Dundalk Institute of Technology, said: “We’re delighted to see this latest recognition for Barracuda FX. Smarthomes and mCor Technologies are other previous Novation Enterprise Platform Programme participants who have gone on to enjoy success in this same all-island competition. We’re committed at the Regional Development Centre to continuing to provide a productive environment to all those entrepreneurs developing their business ideas to the stage where they’re market ready.”

For his part, Mr Fitzpatrick said of the award: “Taking part in the process helped us refine our business plan. Effectively it helped us to take a step back and re-evaluate all aspects of the business. We are delighted to take home the Best High Growth Company prize. It is a validation of our business and winning will also help to raise our profile. It is a great endorsement for the team and it will definitely help us attract the highest calibre of staff to our business.”

Batt O’Keeffe TD, Minister for Enterprise Trade and Innovation, said: “Barracuda FX is to be congratulated on their tremendous achievement. They typify Ireland’s entrepreneurial spirit, using their ideas and vision to develop innovative products and services that break new ground and have widespread global potential. InterTradeIreland’s flagship competition supports and nurtures entrepreneurship and new ventures – key to Ireland’s recovery and growth. After all, today’s budding entrepreneurs are tomorrow’s big employers.”

InterTradeIreland’s Seedcorn competition, with an overall prize fund of €280,000, aims to recognise and promote the best early stage companies across the island. Companies are selected following an intense competition designed to mirror a real life investment process.

Oriel Park, Tuesday 23rd NovemberColleges Regional Dublin North Womens League

Dundalk IT 5-0 Drogheda Institute of Further Education

DkIT managed by Brian Donnelly and Sonia Hoey outclassed the DIFE side on the day however much credit has to go to the Drogheda outfit who are newcomers to the competition who battled hard and never gave up for the full duration of the match. The Drogheda keeper, a former international, was outstanding and pulled off save after save to earn herself a player of the match performance.

DkIT started brightly, pinning the Drog’s into their own half for much of the opening half. DkIT found their feet early in the game and were mounting continuing pressure on the DIFE defence however Dundalk were slow to find their shooting boots. Many of Dundalk’s efforts were saved excellently by the keeper; however a lot of efforts were off target. Dundalk opened their account when centre back Emma Singleton went up for a corner and coolly finished slotting the ball into the back of the net with her trusty right boot. Dundalk continued to mount the pressure but was finding scoring hard to come by. Grace Murray playing on the left wing was making many surging runs up the left and providing pinpoint crosses however DkIT were unlucky not to convert until striker Aisling O’ Rourke stepped up and headed a great effort off the post past the diving keeper, who was then unlucky to have the ball bounce of her legs and into the back of the net to make it 2 to the home side. Dundalk were gaining more and more confidence as the game progressed which was evident by the quick passing play they were employing which any team would find hard to defend against. DkIT keeper Una Pearson found herself with little to do only to touch the ball from a couple of back passes from her calm defenders. Katie Reel, Lucy Canning, Ashling O’ Reilly and Eimear Brady worked tirelessly in attack with great back up from the solid Dundalk back four of Shauna Balfe, Emma Singleton, Laura English and Shirley Flood. Katie Reel finally found the back of the net twice in quick succession with unstoppable powerful efforts that left Dundalk 4 nil up at the break.

The second half started much the same as the first with DkIT pinning Drogheda in their own 18 yard box. Grace Murray in search of a goal continued her customary runs up the left wing and cut into the box on many occasions beating the defenders but couldn’t find the back of the net because of excellent saves from the goalkeeper. Grace got her goal from another run off the left wing, she skipped past a few defenders and slotted home with a great finish into the bottom corner. DkIT were now 5 to the good and coasting to victory. The Drogheda keeper made one unfortunate mistake which does not take away from her excellent performance when she called have it for a ball resulting in an indirect free kick inside the box for DkIT which Katie Rolled to Grace but her effort sailed over the crossbar. Centre back Emma Singleton was replaced by Charlene Mc Alester early in the second half, Charlene kept to her defensive duties and snuffed out a few Drogheda attacks in the late stages of the game. The game finished 5 -0 to Dundalk with the home side glad to gather the 3 points.

Dundalk are now 3rd placed in their division with 3 points from 2 games after losing heavily in their opening league match. DkIT will hope to go top of the league next week if they defeat St. Pats in an away game.
