In just 15 years DK Eyewitness Travel has become the world’s biggest guidebook publisher.Every day, more people consult an Eyewitness or Top 10 Travel Guide than any other guidebook brand. I think that’s because our books are useful and beautiful in equal proportion. Our editors and designers do their best to provide the information travellers need in a form which is simply a joy to use - information is clearly and consistently structured, and the gorgeous illustrations bring the destination to life. People don’t just like our books - they absolutely love them.

Day or night, someone, somewhere

is working on a travel guide

Using a DK Travel Guide, with its genius blend of words and pictures, is an effortless experience. So effortless, in fact,

that it’s easy to overlook the creative exertion poured into every book. Technology has come a long way, but travel guide

publishing is still labour-intensive, with a cast of, if not thousands, then at least hundreds. Authors, photographers,

cartographers, picture researchers, illustrators, artworkers, editors, editorial assistants, proofreaders, indexers,

fact-checkers, designers, design assistants and DTP operators all play a part in getting the words, pictures, maps and

illustrations onto the page. And that’s before we even get to colour repro, printing, shipping, sales and distribution.

Appropriately, we’re very much an international operation – working across continents and between time

zones. With authors and photographers on location, creative teams in Delhi, Mumbai and London, repro houses in

Singapore and printers in China, you can be certain that day or night, someone, somewhere is working on a travel guide.

The content of every title will have been around the globe in electronic or proof form many times before its print

incarnation goes travelling with its reader.

With so many people involved in so many places, the process takes formidable organisation. Activity is always

frenetic, and in many ways we are a well-oiled machine, but whilst we work against the clock, it’s not a production line.

Every detail, every picture, word and full stop is hand-crafted and carefully considered, each book is an artisan creation,

an international collaboration that brings together the ideas and perspectives of a hugely diverse team.

Experiencing what goes on behind the scenes and seeing how much determination and passion is poured into

creating the best guides we can, I always get an overwhelming flutter of excitement when I see someone reading a DK

guide. Because knowing that our readers share our enthusiasm is what makes it all worthwhile.

Did youknow?

Producing a DK Eyewitness Travel Guide from scratch is a true labour of love, taking up to two years from start to finish, and costing a six-figure sum.

Street-by-street illustrations are created in pencil and watercolour, not by computer. The artists refer to aerial pho-tography and photographs of every building.

75% of our photographs have been taken especially for our guides; the remainder are sourced from museums, archives and occasionally picture agencies.

Our guides have appeared on EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale, and on the big screen in The Bourne Supremacy.

Page-by-page, the illustrations and photographs within each guide are equal to the copy.

Our best-selling guides are the perennial bestsellers you’d expect: Italy, Rome, Paris and New York.

We have a Content Management System that updates as and when we edit each guide, which means we can put our information online as soon as it is edited.

DK Eyewitness Travel Guides are published in 30 languages, from Portuguese and Slovenian, to Chinese and Hebrew.

The first foreign language guide was Rome, published in Polish.

INSPIRATIONAL TRAVEL (2 titles) Combining inspirational narrative with sumptuous photography. These stunning travel books are designed to inspire and encourage every type of traveller to go out and see the world.

BILINGUAL VISUAL DICTIONARIES (7 titles) Look and learn - the quick and intuitive way to learn and recall everyday vocabulary. Scenes and items from everyday life are clearly labelled in the local language, making it easy to find the words you want whatever the situation.
