Eric Prydz Wins BBC Radio One’s Essential Mix

Of The YearOver 65 DJs delivered a BBC Radio One Essential Mix in 2013, but only one can take home the coveted title of Essential Mix Of The Year. BBC Radio One today announced that the 2013 Essential Mix Of The Year belongs to Eric Prydz. Originally broadcast on BBC Radio One on February 2, Prydz’ mix started tren-

ding during its live broadcast under #PrydaEssentialMix. In true Prydz fashion his Essential Mix was a journey through his multiple aliases – Eric Prydz, Pryda and Cirez D – stacked full of unreleased material, unidentified tracks, and the likes of ‘Power Drive’, ‘Drums In The Deep’ and ‘Rotonda’ which would define Eric’s release cata-log in 2013. The Essential Mix Of The Year is voted for by a Radio One panel. In 2012 Nicolas Jaar took the top prize, this year Prydz beat out the likes of Skrillex, Diplo, Atoms For Peace, Maya Jane Coles, Disclosure, Dixon, Sasha, Claude VonStroke, Guy Gerber and many others to claim the top spot. In 2013 Eric Prydz earned his second Grammy Nomination for his M83 ‘Midnight City’ remix, closed the Coa-chella Festival, headlined Ultra, EDC and HARD festivals, launched his Black Dice residency in Las Vegas and brought his EPIC show to America.

Markus Schulz announces Scream 2Regarded by many as the hardest working man in dance music, it is little surprise that Miami native Markus Schulz continually strives to present his fans with fresh content. Along with two albums under his Dakota alias, he is set to commence 2014 with the fifth outlay under his own name - the second chapter of his Scream story. Since the release of his first Scream album, Markus’ schedule has been relentless. A tour itine-rary which included a 20-date bus tour across the breadth of the United States, marathon sets lasting as long as 12 hours, and show stealing performances at the likes of the Electric Daisy Carnival, Tomorrowland and Transmission, his dedication to entertain and educate the art of DJing is highly admired. Combined with the critically acclaimed weekly Global DJ Broadcast radio show, his Buenos Aires ’13 compilation hel-ped cement his place further among the hearts of listeners throughout the year.

And within Buenos Aires ’13 lies intrinsic links to his Scream II artist album. Headlined by the number 1 Be-atport-placed Remember This, anticipation for the release of Scream II gathers momentum on a daily basis. Come February 2014, it will be celebrated in grand fashion.

We can exclusively announce that the Scream II project will be showcased in no less than four very special release parties - emanating from Markus’ hometown of Miami, city-compilation highlighted Los Angeles, his residency at Ministry of Sound in London, and for the first time ever, the legendary Markus Schulz open to close solo set experience descends upon New York City.

Scream II will be available on CD and iTunes from Armada Music, February 2014.

Electronic music producer deadmau5 has announced today (December 20) the official launch of his new online service, live.deadmau5.com, a digital destination he personally architected for fans to get direct access to premium content and intimate experiences.

deadmau5, who has teamed with Upfront, is breaking the mold by building this fan-centric platform. Here’s how the artist and producer himself breaks it down. The service goes live today just in time for the holidays. It’s available on the web at this url, and it’s also part of a downloadable desktop application for Mac and PC. Native mobile apps for iOs, Android, and Windows Phone will follow in March 2014, but music fans can begin enjoying the service right now. An account is free and with it, users may sign-in, listen to 30-second clips, read all of the latest deadmau5 and Meowingtons news, view photos, and even experience live streams. Meanwhile, a paid subscription boasts a myriad of exclusive features and benefits. The majority of live streams will remain exclusive for subscribers only. These include but aren’t limited to tutorials from deadmau5, screen sharing, events and concerts. Moreover, they will have access to full-length songs, which may also be downloadable.

Then, there’s the aptly dubbed ”MSG BOREDS.” It’s just like it sounds. As deadmau5 puts it, ”Everyone can enter and lurk, but only ’sucks-cribers’ can post.” He will occasionally make appearances there to in order to say hi and engage in stimulating conversations.

The most revolutionary feature is the ”CHAT.” It’s a groundbrea-king approach that allows paid users to be voiced and chat away. Non-subscribers can watch, but not speak. In addition, once a chat is announced, the service will randomly select four users for a designa-ted period of time and allow them to chat with deadmau5.

Paying subscribers can also expect lots of downloadable content from the deadmau5 studio.

We Are FSTVL beat off stiff competition from several leading festivals to scoop the coveted Best New Festival award at the 2013 UK Festival Awards last night, Monday 2nd December. Entering into its 10th year, the awards were decided by music industry experts and huge numbers of online votes from over 500,000 supporters across the UK.

Taking place for the first time in May this year, Essex based newcomer We Are FSTVL enjoyed an unprecedented debut success, hosting over 100 world-class dance acts and 12 brand partners. A total sell-out, the festival received critical as well as commer-cial acclaim with The Independent calling it ‘a slickly planned and well-programmed electronic event’. DJ Mag described it as having ‘a line up befitting any serious wor-

ld-beating house and techno event’ while The Guardian wrote “Impressively everyone who’s made, or is likely to make, a 2013 underground dance anthem is here”.

INTERVIEW DJNEWSMAGAZINE

12

Duane ‘Hit Maker’ Harden is a man responsible for penning some of the biggest crossover dance and pop records of recent years, so it’s no surprise there’s already a lot of hype from the DJ elite in expectation of this long awaited album. Duane Harden is a larger than life personality, well-known for his chart topping releases such as the number 1 hit classic ‘U Don’t Know Me with Armand Van Helden, ‘Love Generation’ with Bob Sinclar, ‘Party All Night (Sleep All Day)’ with R&B sensation Sean Kingston, and recent club classics Live Your Life’ and ‘Stronger’ with Erick Morillo. After over 10 years of co-writing, Duane now steps into the spotlight to his unveil his solo album.

Hey Duane, nice to speak to you. How are you doing? Where are you reading this interview? Happy New Year! I live in Manhattan and at this very moment I’m out checking in on one of my businesses I own in Oklahoma. It’s snowing like crazy back home and I’m freezing my butt off out here so I hope where you are the weather’s just a little nicer.

How has been your summer 2013? Tell us the most special thing that happened to you. OMG! Last summer was such a crazy season for me in Ibiza. When you love what you do I don’t call it “work” it’s “fun” and I performed a lot on the island. It was also great seeing all my DJ friends as everyone is so busy traveling during the year so oftentimes Ibiza is the only time we get to run into each other.

The funniest thing that happened to me last summer was having Yann Pissenem asking me to go on stage at a packed Ushuaia in Ibiza to announce that David Guetta wouldn’t be able to make it because of the weather and that the gig would be rescheduled. It wouldn’t have been so bad except that it was the Closing Party. If those clubbers had tomatoes, I would have certainly been in for it. Lucky for me, they kept dancing in all that rain.

First of all, what do you mean with “Naked Before You”? We do a great job pretending to be “human”. Underneath all of our many masquerading layers we’re just robots. We present ourselves as what we think people want to see. As life begins to peel away at each one of those layers, the world begins to get a tiny glimpse at who we really are. This is where humanity lives. It is only in that moment that you are truly alive when you can allow yourself to lie naked in your truth with nothing to hide, no fear of judgments and no one to judge… just unconditional love. #NB4U (Naked Before You) is the artist and my confessi-ons of our untainted truth. Listen… Peel… Transform… and allow

yourself and the world to love the real you.

To create this album I myself had to in fact “get naked” and in doing so, we’ve created the first “songwriter’s mixtape” in the dance genre. I really got present to the fact that before there is the production and the artist, there is the song and as a songwriter, I wanted the sound to reflect some of the different styles of music that inspire me. #NB4U has songs that have been produced in pop, R&B, hip-hop, and dance genres. The songs have been ordered in a particular way to take you on an emotional journey with each new one arriving at a place totally unexpected.

The thing that everybody talks right now is about #NB4U. After over 10 years of co-writing for the biggest names in the industry, you now step into the spotlight with your solo album. The right moment to release it in your opinion? Yessss. Over the past 10 years, I’ve seen our genre continue to evolve. When I started there were full songs, then we went to just a hook, then to just a track with a few adlibs and now I think people want to hear full songs again. This is the perfect time as a songwriter to release great songs for people to dance to.

#NB4U is like a Hollywood movie where old friends are acting together… We find all artists that have work with you during the last 10 years... Right? I really get the power of “collaborating”. It really works in the pop world so I thought why not try it in dance music. When you collaborate with different producers and vocalists, each bring something special to the song and in the end you get so-mething beyond your wildest dreams. And I think your readers will really appreciate what’s come out of that creative process. I worked with long time friends as well as some up and coming artists that I admire.

Your first single ‘Like If Ruff’ is out now on your own label Soltrenz Records. #NB4U explores many different musical landscapes. It this want you wanted to show with your album? I love many different styles of music so I wanted this album to present some of those styles that inspire me. There’s hiphop, pop, R&B, and of course dance, and even a little gospel music influences on the album.

We have listened to the track you made with Louie Vega… How did you come to work with him on the album? I had co-written several songs for Louie in the past so I thought

DJNEWSMAGAZINE INTERVIEW

13

it was about time we work together on a project for me. He called me up and said to, “get over to the studio right away. I’ve been searching for that right song idea for you and I’ve found it”. As soon as I arrived and Mr. Masters at Work started playing the backing track, it instantly reasonated with my soul and “Never Stop” was born.

We heard there’s now a bonus track on the album with one of your best friends in the music Industry, Bob Sinclar. Your favorite remix? Bob Sinclar and I have worked closely on many of his hits and besides me being a long time Bob Sinclar fan, he is also a friend. When he asked me if he could remix my “What You Need” classic song I was honored and instantly said yes. And it doesn’t stop there. He has also asked if he could remix another song on the upcoming #NB4U album. As a DJ/Producer/Remixer, he’s always being asked by labels and artists to remix tracks.

The fact that he approached me and said he loves one of my new songs on the album and asked to remix it, I didn’t even hesitate. So what’s my favorite remix he’s done for the album? Tough one as I like them both. The seconnd remix will appear on a Deluxe Version of the album to be released later this year. I’ll keep you in suspence as to which song it is.

What’s your biggest musical accomplishment when you look back in the past till now? My biggest musical accomplishment is my fans. I’ll never forget after one performance a girl came up to me and she was crying. I asked what was wrong and she told me that she had a knife in her hand ready to commit suicide and my “You Don’t Know Me” song came on the radio. She listened and put the knife down and she was crying because she was finally meeting the man that saved her life. The fact that my lyrics inspire my fans means the world to me. To heal one persons soul through music is what I cherish. That is my accomplishment. That will be my legacy.

Are you a fan of social media, do you think it’s massively important now? As a Computer Engineer of course I’m a fan of technology. We embrace it to make our lives better. You may find this hard to believe as I’m a rather shy and quiet person posting about what I’m eating or taking a bathroom break just isn’t my thing LOL. I do love social media as it now lets us connect with people around the world instantly. It has changed the landscape of the music industry and now allows anyone at anytime to get their music heard. In fact for most upcoming artist, social media is their only platform.

With which artist, would you like to swap places with for one day if you could? Dag. Now you wanna get me in trouble. I wouldn’t mind swapping places with JayZ as I’m so infatuated with Beyonce. You are highly blessed my brother.

What piece of equipment could you not live without (not necessarily DJ equipment)? My cell phone. It’s the way I stay conne-cted to the world and it’s the first place I turn to when I get inspired. I capture those raw moments of ideas using the

voice recorder on my phone. It’s so funny as I know people must look at me like I’m crazy sometimes as I often get inspired when I’m walking the streets. So at any given mo-ment when you see some crazy man singing melodies, scat-tered words or even down right making awkward noises, it’s probably just me putting down a song idea. My phone is my main studio.

Everyone’s got a hidden talent. What’s yours? I have perfected the art of being “lazy”. It takes a special skill to be able to sit around all day doing absolutely nothing and I’ve mastered that quiet well. If you need lessons, just message me. I’ll give you a crash course.

What keeps you up till late? Thinking about when and where’s the next party. The dancefloor is my drug as my way to escape to a different reality, so I’m constantly chasing that next high in search for the next great party.

Your favorite application this year? Twitter.

Top 100 dj’s, surprised about the result? Hardwell, number 1. Some DJs are now considered real stars, which was not the case 15 years ago. How do you explain the changing social status of DJ and how did you personally experienced? A star is anyone who can entertain the masses. The music and the culture have shifted where clubbers find it entertaining to stand around with a cell phone all night filming the DJ in the both. To post it on their social media speaks volumes to their friends that they were there. Personally, I go to a club to dance up a sweat not to stand around and watch a DJ. I’m a per-son that embraces change so it is what it is. The love for the music keeps me there.

We’re reaching the end of this interview; do you have a message to your fans? Keep dancing… keep believing... keep loving.

Across its Original versions, ‘Lovers’ is a knowing glance back by Solarstone at his formative musical years. Its production and vocals draw affectionate inspiration from a wide artistic palette, with Erasure, Depeche Mode, Roxy Music and Joy Division being just some of its many touchstone influences. Featuring introspective and deeply personal lyrics & vocals from Lemon’s frontman Roger D. Smith, ‘Lovers’ lays and layers them against crisp percus-sion, atmospheric analogue synths and brilliantly stagey drum rolls.

’Mufasa’ is all about the heavy marching beat with twisting, elasticated synths, dropping into a thumping ba-seline that bounces along, bubbling with energy and fun. The catchy hook is incredibly infectious and will no doubt get into your brain and possess your entire being. So be warned - this track will take over dance floors all across the world.

There is no denying that Dutch master Laidback Luke has earned his place amongst dance music royalty. His dynamic fusion of hyper-drive-house-step & ghetto-jack-trance-bass is the sound of now and has been for the past decade – and there is no sign of it slowing down!

Consisting of 22 of the biggest records from their current live sets, Tritonal include the Original Mix and Tritonal Club Mix of their hit single, ”Now Or Never” featuring Phoebe Ryan, as well as ”Bullet That Saved Me” from their Metamorphic I EP. The instrumental mix of ”Satellite” is a forward-thin-king track that takes the listener on a journey of co-hesively executed genre-bending sounds. Starting off slow, ”Satellite” progresses into a pounding drop and back again for an unsuspected treat. ”Electric Glow” featuring Skyler Stonestreet showcases uplifting angelic vocals and a festival-ready drop that will leave a lasting impression on any listener. Premiered during Tritonal’s Electric Zoo Festival set earlier this year, this track has been a staple in Tritonal’s sets throug-hout the latter part of 2013. The third new production on this release, ”Collide” with Rafaël Frost, features vocals from Underdown and is a feel-good track with profound harmonized vocals and a piercing melody that will leave the listener wanting more.

With new compelling tunes from Juventa, Estiva, Lush & Simon, Rick Mitchells and more, Tritonia Chapter 001 is a comprehensive snapshot of the sounds of Tritonal and Enhanced Music that dance music lovers won’t want to miss.
