Interview by Njeri Kimani | Photos courtesy of Decimal Records

Eric Musyoka is a Kenyan Music Producer and Sound engineer. He is founder and partner at Decimal Records which focuses on music production and audio post production.

He Speaks to us about his Album, Decimator Volume 01?

Pb: How is it working with Bon’eye of P-unit?M: Besides being an Artist, Bon’Eye is also my Business Partner. We are 3 Directors at Decimal: Bon’Eye, Tony “Ghost” and myself. Working with him has been the best experience in my business career. He is very supportive and always looking for ways to innovate and never lacks solutions to our business challenges. What started as a small conversation about his Solo Album has now become a fully-fledged business that is striving to be the best Label in the region if not the Continent.

Pb: What inspired the Compilation of Decimator Volume 01?M: Initially, the Album was to Feature Top Musicians in Kenya. It’s a project that I began in 2015, but I soon hit a myriad of challenges because, the artists I had approached to work with had various on-going projects (which I was also part of ), Tours & Promotions. This made it even more difficult as it posed a challenge when it came to Scheduling the Release and Promotion of the Album. I ended up calling it Off and I had to start a fresh with New Artists that were signed to the Label. It also became a launching pad for their First Commercial Release, and we will keep at it until they each have their own Projects.

Pb: Which artist are featured in the 15-track album? Why?M: We have featured all New Decimal Artists i.e KonKodi, Brian.Nadra, Khuhani, Jack Rooster and Bon’Eye. We have collaborated with Avril, NaiBoi, P-Unit, Yvonne Darq, Shaquay, Ricco Beatz and Nannoma (My old Rap Group). The reason I collaborated with those artist was to give the album a variety of styles and also get to work with some of my favourite artists who have been very instrumental in my Label and also whom we are friends besides just business.

Pb: Where could we find the Album?M: Decimator Volume 01 is available in physical form on Order and on Sale when we Tour. We are working on that distribution front, but otherwise all major digital plat forms have the album from BoomPlay, iTunes, Tidal, Spotify, Deezer, Google Music, YouTube & Waabeh.

Pb: What is next for Decimal Records?M: We are embarking on a country wide tour this year to promote the Album. Besides that we have a Film Soundtrack that will form part of Decimator Vol 2 slated for Release in April 2020 that we are working on and hopefully all the Artists will have their own Albums in 2022.

Pb: Any Advice to upcoming Producers who look up to you? M: Always be on the look out for new talent, that’s where the real start is. Look for that raw artists that you can mould and grow with, invest in them and make sure the business is well handled and be patient, be persistent and track every progress, and every failure use that as a learning curve, no one is born successful, we make success happen!

MY REAL NAME IS: Barnabas Otieno.

I GOT MY STAGE NAME FROM: my good friend and a mentor DJ Mantell.

I STUDIED AT: Baba Dogo Primary, I then joined Masii Boys in Machakos and later on finished my High School Education at Jamhuri High School. I then went to Kenya Polytechnic and took a Diploma in Automotive Engineering.

I USUALLY PLAY: all Genres of Music. I am a round up DJ but my Playlist mostly consist of Kenyan Music I passionately Love the 254.

I GOT INTO DEEJAYING: a while ago as a part time gig. Then I met other Djs and my Interest grew so much that I wanted to be a well-known DJ across the country. In 2006, is when I started to take it more seriously and worked on my Skills.

I LEARNT DEEJAYING: from DJ Mantell. He took me in and taught me a thing or two about Deejaying. I will always be Grateful for the lessons he gave me.

IT’S BEEN: almost 12 years, since I started Deejaying.

MY MAJOR CHALLENGE WHEN STARTING OUT: was Trusting in Myself. Also I did not have the capital to buy equipment & after all that, there was the Marketing bit, I needed people to see and know that you exist.

IF I WASN’T A DEEJAY I’D BE: a Soldier.
