INTRODUCTION

This is a tribute to the hardcore punk bands of the early 80’s, considered by many the pinnacle of American hardcore music. I had no part in this scene (I was born around the time when it was ending) so I’m nothing more than a distant, retroactive fan—but as a person aligned with visual art, I’ve found a special appeal in the bold, graphic imagery produced by the movement. In the following pages, I’ve collected wordmarks from 100 hardcore bands and purposely taken them out of their contexts. With this, it’s my humble intention to give them a certain degree of elevation and to make more palatable what some might automatically ignore. Each is a representation of the D.I.Y. mindset; working with minimal resources to get the job done. It’d likely be impossible to find the names of every artist responsible for these (and none are included). However, they deserve credit. I hope that I can say this collection exudes reverence for early hardcore,and only helps to bolster its importance.

Some that I’ve included may be “unofficial,” appearing only on a few flyers or a single album cover. 1 Dr. Know The guitarist of Bad Brains also

having the name Dr. Know is apparently coincidental.

2 Fear John Belushi was a fan of Fear, and

was able to get them on Saturday Night Live in 1981. Their set was cut short and the mosh pit destroyed part of the studio.

3 The Germs Germs frontman Darby Crash is

pictured lying supine on stage on the poster and soundtrack cover of The Decline of Western Civilization. Eerily, he died from a heroin overdose shortly before the film was released.

4 Verbal Abuse It was not uncommon for bands

to move to California or other hardcore hotbeds to become part of the scene there.

5 MDC Millions of Dead Cops is one of

many incarnations of the initials MDC. Other variations include Multi-Death Corporation and Millions of Damn Christians.

6 The Groinoids Up until 2008, Groinoids only

had two released songs. (On the compilations This is Boston, Not L.A. and Unsafe at Any Speed.)

7 Hüsker Dü Hüsker Dü was one of a few

hardcore bands who went on to evolve their sound and gain relative mainstream attention.

8 J.F.A. The name Jodie Foster’s Army,

aka J.F.A., is a reference to John Hinckley, Jr., who attempted to assasinate Ronald Reagan in hopes to impress Jodie Foster.
