REGISTRATION

Registration for Saturday & Sunday classes is $50 per person and ONLINE ONLY at

www.dixiefirefighters.com. After registering, print 2 Invoices and mail one with payment to: Dixie

Firefighters Association, PO Box 1656, Elizabethtown, KY 42702. Pre-registrant will receive a T-shirt if registered before March 5, 2017

Firefighter Application must be completed during the registration process.

Choose a 16, or two 8-hour courses (no discount for those attending only one day).

Included with Registration: Friday & Saturday night events, LUNCH both days

Pre-registration confirmations will be mailed to the department, agency, or individual in the form of a door pass ticket.

All events and meals will be on the ECTC campus.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS You will be dropped from class if you/your agency fails to pay by March 5, 2017.

Your door pass/receipt will be mailed once payment is received.

Each student is required to complete a Firefighter Application when registering online the first time. Information is required: DOB, education, address, residency information, SS#, Citizenship, FFID, etc.

Refunds--will be given only to students whose class(es) are cancelled, where there is no second choice available. The registration fee is completely transferable. Please call (270) 766-5238 or (888) 234-7201 to switch students.

NFPA REGULATIONS All applicable NFPA Standards are strictly followed and enforced. Courses requiring NFPA 1403 prerequisite(s) or

firefighter certification require a signed approval form from the fire chief submitted with payment (page 18). A PERMISSION LETTER from department chief must be submitted with payment when enrolling in the Arson I course regardless of age.

EXPLORERS/JUNIOR FIREFIGHTERS Explorers and Junior Firefighters must submit Explorer/Jr. FF permission release form and can only register for

designated courses.

Explorers/Junior firefighters will be allowed into some courses based on the current Kentucky Fire Commission Junior Firefighter regulations.

Students ages 16-17 wanting to take EMS Continuing Education must submit a copy of their First Responder card and the Explorer Permission Form (page 17) with payment.

We observe a zero tolerance policy for disrepectful or disruptive behavior. The students parents (guardian) and the fire chief will be notified of the dismissal.

COLLEGE CREDIT HOURS & CERTIFICATES College degree credit hours are awarded for all “FRS” courses. Degree credit classes require passing a written or a skills exam.

A Firefighter Application must be completed to receive college credit. All other courses are for non-degree credit. Instructors will award certificates/training hours at the completion of each course for actual hours student is in class. Fire school certificates will be awarded after attending the entire course. Students are responsible for entering their training hours into the Kentucky Fire Commission training records system. Obtain a KFS 1-b (yellow sheet) from the instructor for partial training.

Course Listing Description

“911” Emergency Responder Down (AA0003) 8 hours Saturday

This 8-hour block of instruction will consist of a round-table discussion on dealing with the emotion and proper procedures, forms, etc. in dealing with a Line-of-Duty Injury and/or a Line of Duty Death. There will be guest speakers from the Fire Commission and Supporting Heroes along, with video interviews of Chief Officers that have gone through these events.

Advanced Chaplain Class (JJ0000) 8 hours Saturday

This class will include presentations and discussions regarding the Professional Canon of Ethics for Chaplains, Parameters of Confidentiality, and Respecting Limits, Helping the Bereaved Navigate the Grief Process, Identifying Support Systems, and Utilizing Community Resources.

Prerequisites: Previous training as Chaplain

Advanced Rope Rescue (Q0007) **Pre-requisites** 16 hours Saturday & Sunday

This is not a class for learning basic level skills! Students should have successfully completed Basic and Intermediate Rope Rescue as taught by KCTCS or equivalent. This is a physically demanding class that requires teamwork and a cooperative attitude.

Evolutions will include: working with litters at height, assembling and operating raising and lowering systems, rigging steerable systems, artificial high directionals, obstructed vision rappels, and rappels with air packs, as well as night operations.

Equipment Needed: Student must furnish helmet with retention and suspension system meeting NFPA, UIAA, or NIOSH safety standards, clean leather gloves, and boots that provide adequate ankle support. Personal/agency harnesses and hardware are welcome pending inspection and approval of instructors. All other equipment will be provided.

Prerequisites: This is not a class for learning basic level skills! Students should have successfully completed Basic and Intermediate Rope Rescue as taught by KCTCS or equivalent

Arson Detection for the First Responder (NFA) - FRS 2074 (Y0001) 16 hours Saturday & Sunday

This is the National Fire Academy’s basic level fire investigation course . The classroom delivery will cover many phases of initial fire scene investigation with emphasis on the firefighter’s responsibility in arson detection. This course satisfies the requirement for FRS 2074 in the KCTCS AAS Fire/Rescue Technology Degree Program. Students should be prepared to take an exam at the conclusion of the course.

Prerequisite: MUST HAVE PERMISSION LETTER FROM CHIEF OF DEPARTMENT SENT IN WITH REGISTRATION.

This course covers 16 of the 20 recommended hours for a new firefighter in Kentucky and offers both classroom and hands-on training.

Cancer Awareness / The Silent Mayday (PTSD) (B0000) 8 hours Sunday

Cancer is rapidly becoming an epidemic in the fire service. Each day more firefighters are diagnosed with cancer and evidence is clearly showing a link between cancer and the fire service. At the conclusion of this course the student will be aware of the link between firefighting and cancer, current actions that increase the risk of contracting cancer, limitations of PPE against exposure to carcinogens, and preventative measures to decrease the risk of contracting cancer.

The afternoon session is a strategy course for Suicide Intervention and Prevention. The objectives include understanding the stress, pressure, and culture in the fire service and development of strategies to train fire service personnel in suicide prevention. Also, how to understand, identify, prevent and limit effects of PTSD.

CPR Instructor (BB0000) 8 hours Saturday

This one-day course provides certification to instruct the various disciplines that the American Heart Association

(AHA) teaches regarding the BLS skills of Heartsaver (Community), AED, Healthcare Provider, and First Aid. All of

these programs have a 2-year certification.

Prerequisites: Current AHA Healthcare Provider Certification. Students will not be allowed to take the course unless they can prove successful completion of the online AHA Instructor Essentials (BLS. The core course takes 2 hours to complete and must be done in advance. CPR Pocket Masks are required (one per student) and the BLS Instructor Essentials (only one instructor package is needed per department, if multiple students from the same

Driver’s Training (Initial course – Updated 2016) (CC0000) 16 hours Saturday & Sunday

This course will use the Kentucky Fire Commission approved curriculum for Driver’s Training. Topics such as safe operation of fire apparatus, laws regulating operation, and frequent causes of accidents will be discussed. Students should be prepared to take an exam at the conclusion of the course

Prerequisites: Valid Kentucky Driver’s License

EMS Continuing Education 16 hours Saturday & Sunday

This course will provide 16 hours of Core refresher training for both Emergency Medical Responders and EMT-Basics, which is required for National Registry and KBEMS certification. Explorers/Jr. Firefighters wishing to attend the class shall bring proof of current certification as an Emergency Medical Responder or EMT-Basic.

*Open to Ages 16-17

Equipment Needed: CPR Mask, gloves, stethoscope, and blood pressure cuff

*Prerequisites: EMT Certification or EMR Certification. Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF

EMS Instructor Orientation/ Evaluator (BB0000) 8 hours Saturday

This course is required by administrative regulation 202 KAR 7:601. Training, education, and continuing education in order to be credentialed by KBEMS as an EMS Educator and or EMS Evaluator. During the educator/evaluator course the participant will learn all pertinent EMS regulations related to EMS education, the National Registry of EMT’s certification and testing requirements, and how to select and submit required KBEMS documents related to education and certification. Equipment Needed: None

Fire Behavior/Control-Live Burn - FireBlast Trailer (M0001) 8 hours Saturday

This is a NFPA 1403 compliant LIVE-FIRE course which will utilize the FireBlast burn trailer as seen below:

Equipment Needed: Full turnout gear and SCBA with PASS device and spare cylinder. All turnout gear

must be NFPA compliant with no component older than 10 years. Students will not be allowed to

participate if the instructor(s) find that the gear is not NFPA compliant or otherwise poses a hazard. SCBA

cylinders must have a current hydrostatic test date.

Prerequisites: Completion of NFPA 1403 required components prior to enrolling; ”Live Fire Course Competency Validation” form (page 18) must be mailed in with payment. Any student with facial hair that impedes the seal of the face piece will not be allowed to participate in accordance with NFPA Standards.

Fire Behavior/Control-Live Burn Flashover Trailer (FC40000) 8 hours Sunday

This is a NFPA 1403 compliant LIVE-FIRE course which will utilize the Flashover burn trailer (not an

acquired structure burn.)

Equipment Needed: Full turnout gear and SCBA with PASS device and spare cylinder. All turnout gear

must be NFPA compliant with no component older than 10 years. Students will not be allowed to

participate if the instructor(s) find that the gear is not NFPA compliant or otherwise poses a hazard. SCBA

cylinders must have a current hydrostatic test date.

Prerequisites: Completion of NFPA 1403 required components prior to enrolling; ”Live Fire Course Competency Validation” form (page 18) must be mailed in with payment. Firefighter Survival (FC10000) 8 hours Saturday

This course is designed to help firefighters save themselves when trapped, or involved in an impending flashover. The course is required for Kentucky Firefighter Certification and upon successful completion of both Survival and Rescue courses, degree credit can be awarded for FRS 2052 (if participant display certificates). “Participant” certificates issued to all completing required skills. “Observer” certificates issued to those that attend lecture only.

Open to Ages 15-17

Equipment Needed: Full turnout gear including SCBA and PASS device

Prerequisites: Competent in the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Permission Form if Exp/Jr. FF

Firefighter Rescue (FC20000) 8 hours Sunday

This course is designed to help firefighters save mpending flashover. The course is required for Kentucky Firefighter Certification and upon successful completion of the course, degree credit can be awarded for FRS 2052 (if participant display certificates). “Participant” certificates issued to all completing required skills. “Observer” certificates issued to those that attend lecture only.

Flashover Awareness (FC40000) / Wildland Firefighting Awareness (FC30000) 8 hours Sunday

Flashover Awareness class: This basic-level course was created and adopted with the goal of improving firefighter recognition and survival techniques for rapid fire progression and related events. The “Awareness” level course is lecture-based and topics discussed include, but are not limited to: Basic fire behavior and fire development; potential signs, elements, indicators of Flashover and Backdraft; Tactical Ventilation; and Survival techniques. Relevant case studies may also be discussed during the 4-hour version of this program

Wildland Firefighting Awareness class: The second half of the training is the 4 hr. required course for KY basic firefighter certification. The class is based on the Forestry S-190 and S-130 courses but has information specific to Kentucky. It is a lecture class focused on the topics of fire behavior, tools, equipment, suppression, urban interface, and wildland firefighting safety.

Grain Rescue & Farm Equipment Rescue (Q0006) 16 hours Saturday & Sunday

Grain Rescue: The scope of this course is to educate students about grain storage facility types, their construction, and operating features. OSHA regulations, physical-environmental hazards and potential rescue resources are identified. Scene management and safety are discussed in conjunction with locating and making contact with the victim. Appropriate non-entry rescue efforts are identified. Various cutting tools are used in a simulated rescue to assist in the removal of grain from the system. Upon completion of this class the student will possess the ability to function as a support member to a rescue team conducting rescue operations at a grain storage facility.

Equipment Rescue: This course is designed to help the firefighter/rescuer understand responding to farm emergencies and special techniques required to successfully coordinate and execute an agricultural rescue. Topics are: Rural vs. urban farm accidents, Common types of farm accidents and special challenges, Understanding farm equipment mechanics, Animals, Special situations when responding, Management of farm related incidents, Extrication and disentanglement techniques.

Instructor Methodology Update (BB0003) & Fire Training System 8 hours Sunday

This class, designed for company officers and other fire or rescue service personnel with the responsibility of conducting periodic company level or small unit training, introduces the participant to basic instructional concepts and techniques. Emphasis is on teaching principles and techniques applicable to fire and rescue service training and includes effective communication, teaching from lesson plans, methods of instruction, with emphasis on skills training and adult learning. This class meets the methodology requirement for instructor biannual recertification.

The afternoon session will cover the Fire Training System currently in use in Kentucky. Topics on how to enroll in the system, enter student and instructor hours, and run reports on your annual training will be covered.

Leadership 1 – NFA – FRS 2073 (AA0000) 16 hours Saturday & Sunday

This is the latest version of the National Fire Academy course (2010) that is designed to enable Company Officers to be more effective in their role as leaders. The first of a three part series, this course emphasizes the critical skills and knowledge in problem-solving, decision-making styles, planning skills and communications. It is subtitled Strategies for Company Success.

This course satisfies the requirement for FRS 2073 in the KCTCS AAS Fire/Rescue Technology Degree Program. Students should be prepared to take an exam at the conclusion of the course.

Natural Gas Emergencies/Electrical Safety (B0000) 8 hours Saturday

This class is divided into 4 hour sections, one for natural gas emergencies and the other for electrical safety. The natural gas emergencies program will cover topics including understanding natural gas formation, delivery, properties, hazards for emergency responders, carbon monoxide hazards and response and investigation. The electrical safety program will offer critical information that emergency responders should know about keeping everyone safe while dealing with incidents involving electrical distribution equipment.

Principles of Modern Fire Attack: SLICE-RS (M0001) 8 hours Sunday

SLICE-RS class is open to all chief officers, instructors, company officers and firefighters, introducing modern fire behavior and changes to the fire attack within the profession, based on research findings. This information has been known to be controversial to some, so be prepared for great discussions. You don’t have to look far for good discussion regarding fire command, control, accountability and especially fire behavior. The shared science, research and best practices are another tool for your toolbox! Go home to your department with a renewed outlook and with a healthy knowledge of the Principles of Modern Fire Attack: SLICE-RS. This delivery is funded by AFG and the Department of Homeland Security. Its intended audience is chief officers, instructors, company officers & firefighters. This class introduces modern fire behavior and changes to fire attack within the profession based on research findings.

Propane Emergencies (M0004) 8 hours Saturday

This is a LIVE-FIRE, HANDS-ON course that helps the firefighter make informed decisions concerning propane emergencies. The Bobtail Propane Prop will be used.

Equipment Needed: Full turnout gear and SCBA with PASS device and spare cylinder. All turnout gear must be NFPA compliant with no component older than 10 years. Students will not be allowed to participate if the instructor(s) find that the gear is not NFPA compliant or otherwise poses a hazard. SCBA cylinders must have a current hydrostatic test date.

Prerequisite: Completion of NFPA 1403 required components prior to enrolling; ”Live Fire Course Competency Validation” form must be mailed in with payment. Students with facial hair impeding the face piece seal will not be allowed to participate - NFPA Standards.

Rehab for Firefighters (B0000) {NEW COURSE} 16 hours Saturday & Sunday

Firefighter rehabilitation is often a collection of efforts from various agencies or well-intended support groups.

Emphasis on all aspects of firefighter safety and health are the basis for this new course that brings together those

best practices and standards. NFPA 1584 will be reviewed as will other publications in a classroom setting on day

one. The second day will be establishment of the rehab area for firefighters involved in the Flashover training (or

other) evolutions.

Strategy and Tactics for Initial Co. Operations (STICO) – NFA (AA0000)16hours Saturday& Sunday

This is the latest version (2012) of the National Fire Academy Course Strategy and Tactics for Initial Company Operations, and includes exercises that enhance the student abilities in analytical size-up, and using that information to make appropriate decisions in fire confinement, protection of exposures, extinguishment, rescue, ventilation and loss control. It includes activities that aid in decision-making using water supplies and fixed fire protection systems.

Prerequisites: None, although sufficient experience as a firefighter will be helpful to apply principles.

Tools of the Trade (B0000) 16 hours Saturday & Sunday

Each firefighter that joins your department has a lifetime of habits – and they’re not always good ones!

This isn’t a course that teaches all you need to know about ventilation, forcible entry or other basic fire skills. It’s all about the equipment needed to perform those tasks. Opportunities to use tools in evolutions will be offered. Evolution sessions will concentrate on hand tools and power tools. Each session will start with inspection and maintenance, review manufacturer’s guidance, and discuss safety. Multiple stations will involve the student in correct tool use. Hands-on activities will be the primary focus of the class. Firefighting PPE is required for each student.

Equipment Needed: Full turnout gear including fire gloves and leather gloves.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of forcible entry and ventilation basics.

Traffic Incident Management for Responders and Highway Crash Site Mgmt. (B0000) 8 hours Saturday

This 8-hour block of instruction will consist of two 4-hour classes. The Traffic Incident Management class details how temporary traffic control can be established and maintained by emergency responders on-the scene. The Highway Crash Site Management course focuses on inter-agency response to vehicle accidents and offers practical solutions to issues that may arise on-scene.

Vehicle Rescue (Q0001) 16 hours Saturday & Sunday

This course includes classroom and practical evolutions. New vehicles, hybrid and multi-airbag cars will be

discussed. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of basic hands-on extrication principles. Based on

availability, large vehicles such as busses, which may also be used in addition to the cars for hands-on practice in

the course.

Equipment Needed: Full turnout gear or coveralls, helmet or hardhat, gloves, steel-toed shoes, and eye protection.

Prerequisites: Completion of Basic 20 hours.

LIVE FIRE Course Competency Validation Form

The 2012 edition of NFPA Standard 1403 requires that: “Students participating in a live

fire training evolution who have received the required minimum training from other than the

authority having jurisdiction shall not be permitted to participate in any live fire training

evolution without first presenting prior written evidence of having successfully completed the

prescribed minimum training to the level specified in 4.3.1.”

NFPA 1403 requires “student prerequisites” to permit participation in live fire training evolutions.

All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) of the above referenced student is less than ten (10) years from the date

SFRT requires that all students must be compliant with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134: Facepiece seal protection. “1910.134(g)(1)(i) -The employer shall not permit respirators with tight-fitting facepieces to be worn by

employees who have: 1910.134(g)(1)(i)(A) - Facial hair that comes between the sealing surface of the

facepiece and the face or that interferes with valve function;” (hair growth between the skin and the facepiece

sealing surface, such as stubble beard growth, beard, mustache or sideburns which cross the respirator sealing

surface)
