We wish you a very happy Diwali and a Prosperous New Year. You and your friends and family members are cordially invited to Grand celebrations of Diwali Mahotsava at Bharatiya Temple and Cultural Center. Diwali / Deepavali is the festival of lights and is to celebrate the victory of Goodness over Evil and Knowledge over Ignorance. This is also the season to forge new friendships and strengthen old ones by seeking forgiveness and forgiving others. Bharatiya Temple provides this unique opportunity to meet and greet your friends and

family members in this festive season just like in India.

This year the Diwali Mahotsava will be celebrated from October 28th to November 12th at Bharatiya Temple. We start with Dhanteras on Friday, October 28th with Ganapati and Maha Lakshmi Kuber puja. We will recite Hanuman Chalisa eleven times on Saturday evening for Kali Chaudas. We celebrate Diwali with Sri Yantra Lakshmi puja, Chopda pujan and Maha Lakshmi Sahasranamam Kumkum Archana followed by fireworks in front of the temple building. Temple opens at 7:00AM for Jain Mangalik and New Year and will remain open whole day on Monday. Bhai Dooj, Gyan Panchami and Skanda Shasthti is celebrated during the week and then finally the Annakoot puja, Bhajans and famous Annakoot Prasad on Sunday, November 6th. Please visit new temple website, b-temple.org for additional details of all programs during Diwali Mahotsava.

Grand celebrations of Kumbhabhishek Mahotsava in the month of June this year was a memorable event for the Hindu and Jain community in the tri-valley area, another important mile stone for Bharatiya Temple. The temple building with beautiful window carvings, Shikhars and Rajgopuram with north and sound Indian architecture shining with multi-color LED lighting in the night time has already become an iconic building in the region. I am also pleased to inform you that all priests will shift to their new residence at Narayan Guest House at 1630 County line Road, just a block from the temple building by Diwali time this year.

Bharatiya Temple continues to identify and look forward to addressing the future needs of the community. Much needed additional class rooms for the expansion of Bharatiya Vidyalaya and a temple cafeteria where devotees coming from far distances can have a place to enjoy authentic Indian food have been identified as future projects. We would like to hear your opinion for the support of these projects. I must admit that any new project will require financial support from the community. However, we are hoping that enough financial support will come from the community to enable us to start these projects in 2017.

We thank all sponsors for their financial support and volunteers for their selfless seva to God, a must for the success of Bharatiya temple. We look forward to your active participation and financial support in future.

A colorful fireworks show combined with children lighting harmless sparklers has been organized for this year’s event. For your fun and enjoyment, all devotees are welcome. We request your cooperation as we make this event enjoyable and safe for all.

To have a safe and fun filled event, precautions need to be taken to avoid any unforeseen tragedies. Here are some guidelines that will be enforced:

· All young children handling fireworks are under close adult supervision. · There will be a designated location for watching the fireworks show with an

alternate side area for devotees and their families to light sparklers. · Those devotees that will be lighting sparklers are requested to stay in the

designated stations and dispose of the sparklers immediately after use in assigned containers.

· Keep fireworks at a proper distance as they are being lit. · All fireworks will be provided by the Temple. Devotees will NOT be allowed to

bring any personal fireworks to the Temple. · Devotees participating in fireworks wearing traditional clothing should take extra

caution for safety for themselves and those in the vicinity during lighting of fireworks.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Happy Diwali!

Diwali or Deepavali, popularly

known as the "festival of lights", is an

important festival in Hinduism, Jainism,

and Sikhism, celebrated for different

reasons. For Hindus, Diwali is one of the

most important festivals of the year and is

celebrated in families by performing

traditional activities together in their

homes. The name "Diwali" is a contraction

of "Deepavali", which translates into "row

of lamps". Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps (diyas or dīpas) filled

with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. During Diwali, all the

celebrants wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with family members

and friends.

Significance of Diwali

Hindus have several significant events associated with Diwali:

The return of Rama after 14 years of Vanvas (banishment). To welcome his

return, the residents of Ayodhya lit diyas (ghee lamps).

The killing of Narakasura: Celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi, one day before

Deepavali, it commemorates the killing of the evil demon Narakasura, who

wreaked havoc. Krishna's wife Satyabhama killed Narakasura during the

Dwapara yuga.

Govardhan Puja is celebrated the day after Deepavali and is the day Krishna

defeated Indra, the deity of thunder and rain. According to the story, Krishna

saw preparations for an annual offering to Lord Indra and asked his father

Nanda about it. He debated with the villagers about what their 'dharma' truly

was. They were farmers, they should do their duty and concentrate on farming

and protection of their cattle. He said that all human beings should do their

'karma' to the best of their ability and not pray for natural phenomenon. The

villagers were convinced by Krishna, and did not proceed with the special

puja (prayer). Indra was then angered, and flooded the village. Krishna lifted

Mount Govardhan and held it up to protect the people and cattle from the

rain. Indra finally accepted defeat and recognized Krishna as supreme.

Return of Pandavas after 12 years of Vanvas and one year of agyatavas (living

incognito).

Dhanteras is the first day of the

five-day Diwali Festival. The Dhan in

Dhanteras means wealth. On Dhanteras, the

"Owl" form of Goddess Laxmi is worshiped

to provide prosperity and well being. To

mark the auspicious day, houses and

business premises are renovated and

decorated. Entrances are made colorful with

traditional motifs of Rangoli designs to

welcome the Goddess of Wealth and

Prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited

arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice

flour and vermilion powder all over the

houses. Lamps are kept burning all through the night. "Lakshmi Puja" is

performed in the evenings when tiny diyas of clay are lit to drive away the

shadows of evil spirits. Bhajans, devotional songs in praise of Goddess Laxmi,

are sung and "Naivedya" of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess.

An interesting story about Dhanteras Festival says that, once, the sixteen

year old son of King Hima was doomed to die of a snake-bite on the fourth day of

his marriage as per his horoscope. So, on the fourth day of his marriage, his

young wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid out gold ornaments and lots of

silver coins in a big heap at the entrance of her husband's boudoir and lighted

innumerable lamps all over the place. And she went on telling stories and

singing songs. When Yama, the god of Death arrived there in the guise of a

Serpent his eyes got blinded by the dazzle of those brilliant lights and he could

not enter the Prince's chamber. So he climbed on top of the heap of ornaments

and coins and sat there the whole night listening to the melodious songs. In the

morning he quietly went away. Thus the young wife saved her husband from the

clutches of death. Since then this day of Dhanteras came to be known as the day

of "Yamadeepdaan" and lamps are kept burning throughout the night in

reverential adoration to Yama, the god of Death.

According to another popular legend, when the Gods and demons churned

the ocean for Amrita or nectar, Dhanvantari (the physician of the Gods and an

incarnation of Vishnu) emerged carrying a jar of the elixir on the day of

Dhanteras.

Annakoot is celebrated in observance of the episode in Sri Krishna’s

childhood, in which He gave protection to the cowherd clan of Vrindavan from

the wrath of Indra and humbled Indra in that process. The cowherds, their wives,

children and cattle jubilantly surrounded Sri Krishna. They were awed by His

superhuman accomplishment and celebrated Sri Krishna’s feat with a sumptuous

feast. Thus began the tradition of Annakoot.

Srimad Bhagwatam says :- "After

lifting of the huge Sri Govardhan

Parvat for continuous seven days

prior to Diwali, the Lord put it back

on earth & asked the citizens to

worship the mountain. Sri Krishna

then appeared in two forms. One as

Sri Govardhan mountain itself, i.e.,

deity to be worshiped and as second

as resident to offer food to Him.

After the prayers, traditional worship

& Aarti, innumerable varieties of

delicious sweets / 56 bhogs were

Kali means Dark (evil) and Chaudas,

fourteenth. Thus, celebrated on the 14th day of the

dark half of Ãshwin month, Kali Chaudas is the

day allotted to the worship of Maha-Kali or Shakti

and is believed that on this day Kali killed the

wickedest. Also referred to as Narak-Chaturdashi,

Kali Chaudas is day to abolish laziness and evil

which create hell in our life and shine light on life.

The strength to protect others is referred as Kali,

and if it’s used for God's work, it is called

Mahakali.

The pooja is performed with oil and flowers.

Devotees offer coconuts to Hanumanji.

Diwali has a very

special significance in

Jainism. Lord Mahavira,

the last of the Jain

October 15, 527 BC, on

Chaturdashi of Kartika,

as Tilyapannatti of

Yativrashaba from the

sixth century states:

Mahavira is responsible for establishing the Dharma followed by Jains even

today. According to tradition, the chief disciple of Mahavira, Ganadhara Gautam

Swami also attained complete knowledge (Kevalgyana) on this day, thus making

Diwali one of the most important Jain festivals.

ceremoniously raised in the form

of a mountain before the deity as

"Bhog" and after Lord had it full,

now it was citizens turn to

approach the Mountain of Food

and take Prasad from it. It was a

Great Feast for residents of

Govardhan & they all enjoyed it

thoroughly. Thus on this day, the

devotees offer their gratitude to

Lord Krishna for his blessings in

making their lives complete. In

temples, on this day, the deities are given milk baths, dressed in shining attires

with ornaments of dazzling diamonds, pearls, rubies and other precious stones.

After the prayers and traditional worship innumerable varieties of delicious

sweets are ceremoniously raised in the form of a mountain before the deities as an

offering.

candle to remove darkness. It is similar to removing

bad with good. People celebrate Diwali because

after 10 whole days of fighting Rama killed Ravana

and got free from evil. People lighted diyas to show

Rama his way back home to ayodhya, as it was a

dark no moon day. Diwali is an Indian festival.

Indians celebrate what Rama did for our country,

by freeing the country from Ravana.

On Diwali people do pooja and sing bhajans in

temple and their own houses. On Diwali people

wear new clothes and even have dinners, do

fireworks and paint diyas with friends. On Diwali

people exchange gifts because grownups know

kids love gifts.

Of all the stories related to Deepawali, I like the story of King Bali. He was the grandson of Prahlada. He was good but became greedy and wanted to own everything in the world, and even conquered Indra’s kingdom. To give the Gods what rightfully belongs to them, Maha Vishnu takes the form of Vaamana. As a part of a big Yagna, Bali was doing ‘daana’ of gold, land, elephants, horses and others... then Vaamana comes and asks for 3 steps of land. Bali feels its a small request and tells Vaamana that he is a generous king and to go and ask his father to teach how to make big wish with a wealthy king. While Vaamana is thinking the names like Dasaratha, Vasudeva, Kashyapa, King Bali presumes Vaamana has no father. A little talk with Vaamana convinces him that all that the boy needs is 3 steps. Bali agrees and gives a word, that very moment Vaamana takes a huge Trivikrama form and first step encompasses the whole earth, the second covers the upper world, by now Bali’s pride is gone, and with humility offers his head for the 3rd step, and is thus sent to Pathala loka. Maha Vishnu is mighty pleased with Bali’s realization and surrender and stands guard to him at Pathala loka and gives the boon to Bali to visit earth once a year, and that is when people celebrate Bali padyami.
