Pelican Lakes Golf and CountryClub Opens Golf-Themed SportsBar Featuring 3 Golf Simulators

Tables and cart booth – The SandBar features a stretched golf cartbooth that sits 12 people. News

elican Lakes Golf & CountryClub in the Water Valley com-munity of Windsor just added

80 more golf courses to its facility. While it didn’t add 80 actual courses,

the golf club installed three state-of-the-art golf simulators inside its new sportsbar, The Sand Bar, that allow people toplay over 80 golf courses from aroundthe world. The bar, as well as the restau-rant and golf course, are open to the pub-lic seven days a week. It is believed tobe the only golf course in the state tooffer golf simulators that allow patronsto play rounds of golf on.

“There is nothing like this bar any-where else in the state, or perhaps the na-tion,” said Water Valley CEO MartinLind. “This is a golfer’s paradise, and it’sright here in Windsor, Colorado. Peoplewill be able to play Pebble Beach whenit’s snowing outside, and that’s anamenity you can’t find anywhere else.”

The Sand Bar not only features threegolf simulators, but boasts 19 TVs, cus-tom tables, booths and finishes, and oneof its eight beers on tap is the club’s veryown beer, Pelican Lakes Lager.

The light, specialty microbrew wascreated specifically for Pelican LakesGolf & Country Club by Windsor-basedHigh Hops Brewery.

“It’s a nice refreshing beer you candrink on a warm, sunny day and not gettoo full off of it,” said High Hops Head

Brewer Zach Weakland. While having its own beer is nice, the

primary attraction are the golf simula-tors. Each simulator is identified by adifferent professional golfer. The Palmerand Nicklaus sims are situated next toeach other while the Funk VIP sim is iso-lated in its own private room.

“The idea behind the Funk room is toprovide an intimate room for private par-ties,” said Lind. “The ambiance in theroom is unprecedented, and honors whatwe’re trying to do here which is givepeople the ultimate golf experience.”

The food menu in the Sand Bar iscompletely different than that of the up-stairs Pelican Lakes Restaurant. Themenu leans heavily on small pizzas andpaninis, and the drink menu featuresconcoctions such as the Ty Webb, theHappy Gilmore and the Tin Cup.

“Great atmosphere, great food andgreat friends equal a great quality oflife,” said Lind. “That was the goal andwe achieved and passed that goal withThe Sand Bar.”

Evenings at The Sand Bar are filledwith golfers just coming off the course, families enjoying a round on a simula-tor and patrons taking in a sportingevent on TV.

“There are ‘No Bad Days’ at the SandBar,” said Lind.

Is the Golf World Being“Trumped”?

Turnberry in Scotland

Featured Travel

By Peter HellmanDivot Magazine Contributing Writer

n the last few years, Donald Trump has amassed17 golf courses in the United States and abroad. Most of us never really noticed until 2012 when

“The Donald” opened his signature Scottish course justnorth of Aberdeen. Even that was a bit under the radar formost of us because this was a new course built by “TheDonald”, albeit with a generous amount of local contro-versy. However, when he bought the luxury Doonbeg GolfResort in Ireland and, soon thereafter, the noble Turnberryin Scotland, the golf world really took notice. Let’s face it!“The Donald” owning Turnberry is almost as shocking tomany golfers as Trump owning the very home of golf it-self – the Old Course at St. Andrews. It is true that bothDoonbeg and Turnberry have had various internationalowners, but never anyone quite as public as “The Donald”.The Dubai based Investment Company and the Japaneseowners of Turnberry before them invested heavily in theproperty but they were also sensitive to Turnberry’s tradi-tions and the place the Turnberry name enjoyed amonggolfers around the world. One of the first things “The Don-ald” does after buying a property is to change the name ofit. Invariably the name change always includes the name“Trump”. Doonbeg became Trump International Irelandand after buying Turnberry, Trump was quoted as say-ing,”Trump Turnberry has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it.”

So, what is “The Donald” really up to? Is he simply anambitious businessman eager to take advantage of the golfindustries doldrums? As you may have read, there are farmore golf courses closing than opening each year; manyprivate clubs are losing members and waiting lists at someof the most exclusive clubs are shrinking; more golfers areleaving the sport than entering it and the opportunity costof valuable land on which courses sit and the operating ex-pense of maintain them keep climbing. To many, this in-dustry is in crisis. “The Donald” bought the DoonbegResort in Ireland out of bankruptcy for a bargain price justover $20 million. Previous owners had put substantiallymore into the property. Even Turnberry at ahigher price of about $68 million waswell below the Dubai investmentgroup’s purchase priceand investments.

The concern of many who love the game of golf, its his-tory, architecture, sometimes funky charm and reasonableaccess is that “The Donald” will change golf to glitzy overpriced playgrounds for the rich and that the game will suf-fer. Could it be that “The Donald” holds all the cards andwe the golfing public will eventually be “trumped”.

Have you ever wondered about “The Donald’s” surname?Has it always been Trump? Perhaps it was changed fromJones or Smith to better fit the family ambition. Or per-haps the name itself, inherited as it was by “The Donald”,caused ambition itself to blossom. If you look up the word“trump” in the dictionary you find some interestingdefinitions. Take the phrase “a trump card”. It’sdefined as “a valuable resource that may beused, especially as a surprise, in order togain advantage.” Is that the real Donald? Is he bent on taking advantage of everyopportunity to satisfy his own ego? Takethe verb form “to trump”. It’s defined as“to beat someone or something by sayingor doing something better.” Perhaps this iswhat “The Donald” is really up to – tryinghard to save golf by doing it better and hav-ing the vision and cash to save golfcourses that might otherwise gobroke and disappear. I wouldlike to think that there ismore to “The Donald”than the afore men-tioned self-servingdark side. I do be-lieve he trulyloves the gameand is fond of itstraditions. Perhapshe really is helpingto save at least partof the world of

golf. Much of Europe was hit hard by the recent recessionand values of real estate of all kinds tumbled in Irelandand Scotland often to levels well below the loans againstthem. Trump may not be a knight in shining armor swoop-ing in to save our beloved courses. He may be oppor-tunistic, self centered and a bit of an ego maniac, but timewill tell if his money and his deeds will be good for golfand the courses we love.

I have clients who tell me - if Trump is involved I want nopart of it. Unfortunately, these are also clients who loveTurnberry and Doonbeg. No one knows how many moreof our favorite courses Trump will eventually own. But atleast for now, “The Donald” is the only one willing to step

up and put his money where his mouth hasbeen. Love him or hate him, he plays thegame and may Trump us all.

- History -The Colorado Open

Championship

News

he Colorado Open Champi-onship has long been recog-nized as one of the best state

opens in the country. There are many in-gredients that contribute to an events’success. But three of the most importantare great players, a great purse and greatvenues. Over its 50-year history theColorado Open has enjoyed an abun-dance of all three.

For its first 27 years the ColoradoOpen was held at Hiwan Golf Club, amountain venue with a strong resem-blance to Augusta National. It’s no won-der the tournament developed areputation as “The Masters” of stateopens. Add to that mix a great field ofprofessionals and some of the country’sfinest amateurs and you have all the in-gredients for some magical golf.

During the Hiwan years the list ofchampions included the likes of DaveHill, Al Geiberger, Willie Wood, MarkWeibe and Steve Jones. And the list ofamateur players was top-of-class. PeterJacobsen, Bob Tway, Steve Jones, CoreyPavin, Steve Elkington, Phil Mickel-son—all of these players won the lowamateur crown at the Colorado Openduring the Hiwan years.

In 1992, the University of ColoradoFoundation brought the tournament to In-verness Hotel and Golf Club. That year, with the addition of First Data Corpora-tion as title sponsor, the purse was in-creased to $125,000, making it the largestpurse of any state open in the country.Colorado’s own Brandt Jobe won theevent that first year at Inverness—hisfirst win as a professional. And anotherColorado player, Jonathan Kaye, put thefinishing touches on his first professionalwin in 1996 with a chip-in birdie on the18th hole.

In 1998 the Colorado Open moved toSaddle Rock Golf Course where it en-joyed three very successful years. Allthree winners were products of Coloradojunior golf: Shane Bertsch (who plays onthe PGA Tour/web.com Tour), Bill Rid-dle and Scott Petersen (who also playedand won on the Nationwide Tour).

In 2001 the Colorado Open traveled

to Sonnenalp Golf Club in Edwards—avenue which brought back a Hiwan-esque feel. In 2002 Kevin Stadler, son ofPGA Tour veteran Craig Stadler, joinedthe long list of players to make the Col-orado Open his first professional win.Stadler’s victory came on the first hole ofsudden death over PGA Tour veteranGary Hallberg and Nationwide playerBrian Kortan.

After the Colorado Open at Sonnenalpwas cancelled in 2003 due to lack ofsponsorship, Pat Hamill of OakwoodHomes and Jeff Dorsey of HealthONEteamed up to create the Colorado OpenGolf Foundation to resurrect the historicchampionship. The two brought togethermembers of the allied golf associationsof Colorado and other Denver dignitariesto form the foundation and in 2004 theColorado Opens were reborn at their newvenue, Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.HealthONE’s title sponsorship andHamill’s vision of creating a sustainablefoundation from which the champi-onships can be played now enters its 11thseason and the Colorado Open is strongerthan ever. The 2014 championship marksthe 50th anniversary of the event andthere’s no doubt the next 50 will be asmemorable and historic as the first. D

wo major areas of the swing willhelp control the direction of ballflight: Club face and swing path.

But which has greater influence on theinitial flight of the ball and which has moreinfluence on its curvature? The answer isboth. And it depends on the loft of the club.

The two examples I’m going to use are adriver and a lob wedge.

We know that the driver has the leastamount of loft of any club in the bag otherthan the putter. If a club has a low amountof loft does the club face have more influ-ence on the initial flight of the ball? Yes itdoes. This is why the driver can be very dif-ficult for a lot of players to control.

But the swing path does have influenceon the curve of the driver ball flight. Let'ssay the driver club face is three degreesopen at impact and our swing path is threedegrees inside to out, what type of ballflight would you expect to see? We wouldexpect to see a push type ball flight.

When the swing path and club facematch up is when we’ll see either a straight, push or pull looking ball flight. If we wantto hit the “Holy Grail” of ball flights, whichis what we call the elusive push draw, weneed to create a swing path that is more into out than the club face is open—or, to putit another way, the club face needs to beclosed relative to the swing path. One of the

ideal scenarios would be to have the clubface open 2 degrees at impact and have aswing path that is 4 degrees inside to out.

It’s different when we’re hitting a 60 de-gree wedge.

Do you think the club face of the wedgehas as much influence on the initial ballflight as the face of the driver? No! Theswing path will have greater influence be-

cause there is so much loft added to theclub.

When you add more loft to the club, thenthe path has greater influence on the clubface at impact. We still want a good clubface angle at impact, but the face angle atimpact is less influential compared to thedriver. If we had a club in our bag that had90 degrees of loft, the face angle at impactwould almost not be relevant at all. Onlythe path of the swing would dictate the di-rection of the ball flight.

Miura Golf Offers New Options On Its Most Popular Club Models

iura Golf, the Japanese makerof the world's best forged golfclubs, is ready for spring with

enhanced options on two of its mostsuccessful club models.

The K-Grind Wedge: The wedge withthe distinctive fluted sole has reinvigo-rated thousands of short games and pro-vided confident, high-spin exits fromcountless bunkers. But until now, it hadonly been available in 56 degrees of loft.Hearing enthusiastic calls from moreand more golfers for more and more K,Miura responded. Available now fromMiura dealers are 52- and 60-degree K-Grinds in addition to the original 56.

"We weren't surprised to find that peo-ple wanted more lofts in the K," saidAdam Barr, president of Miura. "Theclub has been so versatile in so manykinds of turf, especially with the facelaid open. And it just works so well inthe sand. Making more lofts in thesewas something we were happy to do."

The 52-degree K-Grind features abounce of 7 degrees and the 60-degreehas a bounce of 13 degrees. The origi-nal K-Grind in the 56-degree loft has abounce of 12 degrees.

The K-Grind Wedges suggested retailprice starts at $275 per club, with somecustom shaft options costing more. They’re available now; consult an au-thorized Miura dealer/fitter for details.

Straight-Neck Passing Point 9003 irons:The Passing Point forged irons, withtheir ample cavity-back design, broughteasy-to-hit, forged feel to many golferswho thought forged was beyond them. But not only were such players happily

surprised -- even golfers who didn't needa great deal of ball-striking help foundthe 9003s to be sheer pleasure to hit. With this club's attraction over so manyability levels, Miura also found a lot ofplayers asking for a less-offset look ataddress. The Straight-Neck version ofthe Passing Point 9003s has just 1.3 mmof offset (6-iron), compared with 2.8 mmin the regular model’s 6-iron.

"Of course, some people need offset tokeep from going right, while for othersit encourages the ball to go too far left,"Barr said. "The Straight-Necks areMiura's recognition that a well-de-signed, forged cavity back can help a lotof different kinds of golfers -- andeveryone should have a chance to getthat feel, no matter what their trajectorypreferences are."

The Straight-Neck 9003 also providesa transition design for players whosegames may be changing -- for instance,a good ball-striker who doesn't have asmuch practice time as he would like, but who also might not like seeing toomuch offset. Or, seen from anotherpoint of view, players whose ball-strik-ing has improved so that they need lessoffset can choose the Straight-Neck ifthey're not yet ready for a smaller cav-ity or blade model.

Suggested retail for the Straight-NeckPassing Point 9003 irons will be $250per club, with certain custom shaft op-tions costing more. See a Miura dealerfor details and custom fitting. The clubswill be available in April from author-ized Miura dealer/fitters.

Strong Sales for the 2014 BMW ChampionshipPrompt New Hospitality Ticket Option

hen Denver's Cherry Hills Coun-try Club was selected to host the2014 BMW Championship during

the first week in September, tournament or-ganizers expected a positive response andthey have not been disappointed. Supportfrom fans, volunteers and corporate hospi-tality groups has already exceeded expec-tations nearly three months before the 2014BMW Championship. The Rocky Moun-tain region has left no doubt about its en-thusiasm for hosting the penultimate eventof the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs; todate more than 110 corporate hospitalitysupporters have signed on, over 2,400 vol-unteers have enlisted and fans have boughtout two ticket categories –any day tourna-ment round tickets and upgraded weeklytickets. This response has spurred tourna-ment organizers at the Western Golf Asso-ciation to offer a new ticket option.

“We knew that Denver is a pretty bigsports town, but the excitement and demandwe've seen for the 2014 BMW Champi-onship has really been impressive,” saidVince Pellegrino, Senior Vice President ofTournaments for the Western Golf Associa-tion. “With less than 100 days to the start ofthe 2014 BMW Championship, we are veryclose to reaching our overall ticket goal.”

Given this overwhelming support com-ing from the community-at-large, BMWChampionship officials have elected to in-troduce a new, all-inclusive ticket for thetournament, which will be hosted at CherryHills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village,Colorado, from Sept. 1-7. Named the Wadl-eyClub Ticket, after the tournament's his-toric trophy, the luxury ticket option willoffer a superior spectator experience withaccess to the ‘Wadley Club’ Hospitality tentand its amenities.

“We want everyone who attends the2014 BMW Championship to have an up-close-and-personal spectator experience,”said Pellegrino. “With upgraded ticket op-tions selling out quickly, we determinedthere was demand for an additional pre-mium ticket option for those coming out towatch the top 70 golfers in the world com-peteat Cherry Hills.”

The Wadley Club ticket, the only all-in-clusive option for the 2014 BMW Champi-onship, will offer fans the opportunity toexperience amenities similar to those of-fered in corporate hospitality tents. Locatedon the Par 3, 15thhole, only Wadley Clubticket holders will be granted access to theopen-air tent that will provide exceptional, unobstructed views of the action and com-

fortable seating. Food, beer, wine and softdrinks available in the hospitality tent areincluded for ticket holders. A limited num-ber of daily tickets to the Wadley Club arebeing offered during BMW Championshiptournament rounds, Thursday, Friday, Sat-urday and Sunday. Ticket prices are $250per ticket for Thursday or Friday and $300per ticket for Saturday or Sunday. Ticketscan be purchased online at www.BMW-ChampionshipUSA.com.

“Ticket availability will remain limitedin all categories so we can stage a premierevent that golf fans have come to expectfrom the BMW Championship and CherryHills Country Club ” explained Pellegrino.“Given the strong demand we've seen todate, I wouldn't be surprised if ticket cate-gories continue to sell out.”

Nice Drives

By Karl O’KeefeDivot Vehicle Test Drive Writer

he 300 and 300C are the largestsedans in the Chrysler family, andwith a variety of technology and

luxury features, the 300C is a worthy com-petitor in the sedan market and can be con-sidered a legitimate premium car.

The exterior of the 300 has an attractivemodern design. Inside, the look is upscaleand high-tech, with a new oversized LCDtouchscreen. Depending on the trim level, chrome, carbon-fiber- or wood-look accentsmake the car feel either more luxurious, ormore like a sports sedan.

Even the base 300 includes power windows,

locks and mirrors; LED daytime runninglights; pushbutton start and keyless entry; apower driver seat; cloth upholstery; dual-zone climate control; satellite radio; a USBport; and an 8.4-inch LCD touchscreen dis-play. Step up to the 300S and you get leatherfront seats; shift paddles; piano black trim;and performance tires. Premium leather, natural wood trim, power-adjustable pedals, and a heated steering wheel all contributeto the luxury feel of the 300C, which also in-cludes navigation and the Garmin-basedtouch-screen nav system includes real-timetraffic info.

There's also a Beats by Dr. Dre premiumaudio system, offering a 12-channel amp, proprietary equalization, and trunk-mountedsubwoofer.

The real appeal for the 300C is the V-8 pow-ertrains and the top-performance SRT. The300C is offered with a 363-hp, 5.7-liter HEMIV-8 and a five-speed automatic. While the V-6 is smooth and luxury-car-like, the HEMI ismore aggressive and muscle-car-like. the300C can get to 60 mph in less than six sec-onds, but the SRT can get there in less thanfive seconds with its 470-hp, 6.4-liter V-8.

Safety-wise, the 300C includes all the usualelectronic controls and airbags; Hill StartAssist, Rain Brake Support, and Ready AlertBraking are also included.

or truck buyers who are in thethree-quarter-ton-and-up market,it’s always been thought that

diesel power is the only way to go, untilnow!

Ram now offers the 6.4-liter Hemi in its 2500pickups. This V-8 packs 410 horsepower and429 lb-ft of twist. With the 6.4-liter Hemi en-gine nestled between its fenders, the Ram2500 gets to 60 mph in just 7.9 seconds andthe quarter-mile in 16.1 at 88 mph. Handlingthe 7039-pound Ram is surprisingly easy

both in town and on the highway.

The trim level for the SLT includes steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, underhoodillumination, Big Horn badging, and a 10-waypower-adjustable driver’s seat. The LuxuryGroup package ($640) added, among otherniceties, a heated steering wheel and seats,auto-dimming mirrors, and Ram’s trick, con-figurable seven-inch multiview screen. Ifyou want the Uconnect system ($1005) youget an 8.4-inch touch screen, satellite radio, navigation, and multiple connectivity op-tions.

Controls are within easy reach, and there is

all kinds of storage including dual gloveboxes! The rearview camera is and absolutemust for the nearly 20-foot-long vehicle. Overall I was impressed with how comfort-able and easy driving this 6.4-liter Hemi-

powered Ram is but there is a price to pay atthe pump, which is to be expected.

he 2014 Toyota Tundra introducesnew looks and new features. Thenew exterior and interior are joined

by a handful of technology and equipmentupdates, but there are no changes to the en-gines or transmissions offered. That leavesthe base model with the 270-horsepower,278-pound-foot 4.0-liter V-6 engine; the mid-range 4.6-liter V-8 rated at 310 horsepowerand 327 pound-feet of torque; and the top-line 5.7-liter V-8, good for 381 horsepowerand 401 pound-feet of torque. Mariana Butte Proves Its Resilience!

ariana Butte in Loveland, is fullyopen for play; every last inch of itsPar 72, 6,745 yards. This declara-

tion, to those who know the course and itsrecent history, is cause for a very large cel-ebration.

Flash back to September 2013 when a his-torical volume of rain fell over Colorado, especially Northern Colorado, and floodingwas the top story for weeks and weeks andweeks. Mariana Butte did not escape this100 year event unscathed and three of itsholes #15, 16, and 17 were under water andclosed to play for the remainder of the 2013season plus, a good part of the pre-seasonin 2014.

“We had water, silt and sludge on the teesand fairways of 15, 16, and 17. While wewere able to get 15 and 17 cleared and

ready for play fairly quickly. We had to waitquite some time for the river to recede on16 to a point where we could get crews in to

rebuild the bridge and cart paths and tobegin the clearing process,” said SteveSouthard, Golf Manager for the City ofLoveland.

The Front Range flood of 2013 ushered inmany changes to properties on both sides ofInterstate 25 “The entire Big ThompsonRiver corridor has changed due to the floodevent,” said Southard. “In fact, the BigThompson River itself is wider and haschanged its course in many locations,” hecontinued.

But a changing river could not keep a greatcourse down and in mid-April of 2014 all18 holes opened to play with hole number16 temporarily playing as a par 3 or par 4from a new set of tees on the “dry” side of

the swollen river. Now, however, even thatrestriction has been removed and golferscan once again enjoy a full course of golf.“With the 2014 spring runoff now behindus, playing conditions at Mariana Butte are,and will continue to be, excellent all seasonlong,” Southard stated.

Southard and the maintenance crews ofMariana Butte can begin to relax now. Theriver that runs through it is tame, contained, and still beautiful. And, can it be said onemore time? Mariana Butte is fully open forplay, every yard on every hole.
