Each club has a club theme task and the

club who receives the most points will get

to face paint on another club of their

choice. Let the games begin!

CAMS Santa was given a little boost this winter as CAMS Key Club hosted a holiday toy drive on campus. The drive lasted a little over two weeks, and was accompanied by a canned food drive. CAMS Key Club left boxes in rooms and encouraged fellow classmates to donate brand new, unopened toys. The toys and canned food would be donated to New Challenge Ministries, a ministry ran by Mr. John Hernandez, a fellow Kiwanian and advisor to North High School. By the end of the two weeks, over 40 toys were collected and donated. Overall, over 400 toys were donated to New Challenge Ministries, spreading the joy and happiness of Christmas to underprivileged families. And with Christmas, the Rose Parade soon follows. The huge parade annually invites Key Clubbers and other volunteer groups to help decorate the many floats. This year, CAMS Key Club brought over spirited thirty volunteers for the morning shift. Key Clubbers initially cut flowers for the first couple of hours, but were eventually assigned to work on the floats, pasting seeds, bark, petals, and other items meticulously. Despite the messiness from using glues and handling the various organic items, the club enjoyed spending the day in Pasadena and members were rewarded with the fact that they can say, “I helped work on that float.” To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the club attended a small festival held in commemoration of Dr. King. Members helped celebrate by spreading awareness of Dr. King’s dreams and achievements. A mural was available for fairgoers to paint their hand and write a dream that they would like to see for future generations. A gallery of quotes was displayed while Dr. King’s speech played in the background. A booth where groups of children can create an ideal city was set-up. Volunteers helped run these activities as they painted hands, passed out healthy snacks, and encouraged visitors to watch the many multi-cultural performances held that day.

HMSA: Member of the Month Brian Lu, a new member to our HMSA Key Club family has been a great participate in our schools activities. Brian has not missed any of the meetings and is an active member monthly in Key Club. He has attended multiple events through the month of January and has shown the most devotion coming from his sophomore class. With all his dedications and enthusiasm Brian has demonstrated what it takes to be a true Pirate Penguin.

King Drew: Member of the Month

For the month of January, King/Drew would like to recognize Michelle Velasco for Member of The month. Michelle from day one has shown outstanding leadership. Only being a freshman in high, she has dedicated to attending every possible event our club has. She has the greatest grades to prove it to! Michelle deep inside has that pirate penguin spirit and had definitely proved it at Fall Rally South. She does a great job on balancing out academics as well as extra-curricular activities. She also has a sister that is in key club, and they both prove to be a great team when it comes to work. Many things will come out of her, so once again we at king/drew are proud to make her our member of the month.

13.1 Los Angeles Half Marathon

On January 15, 2012, King/Drew was awake at 5:30 in the morning volunteering at half Los Angeles marathon. 12 members headed to the Dockweiler Beach and worked at water stations preparing drinks for the runners that came along. It was really cold at first but as the sun began to come out little by little, it was better. Many were tired during the marathon but what kept the club going were the simple thank-you’s that they all received from the runners. Runner’s kept repeating thank you for volunteering! That made many of the members smile. It was truly a great experience, even though we all got dirty. Special thanks go to the event coordinator Detra Jones. She put up with all the craziness and kept in touch with our group to make sure we all were safe and had fun!

Lawndale

Like our president, Byron Barahona, said, “you don’t know service until you have fed 50 families”. That’s exactly what Lawndale did during December. We brought over 15 volunteers to help package food into boxes so families in need can pick them up. We worked from 3:00 pm all the way to 9:00 pm. When your service directly impacts people, you feel good at the end of the day.
