CASEY MAHANEY

Casey Mahaney has been a dive indus-try professional since 1983. He is an internationally published author, has co-written five marine life identification guides and has also co-authored Lonely Planet/Pisces series guides to Fiji and the Maldives. Casey took up underwa-ter photography while captaining live-aboard vessels world-wide as a licensed Coast Guard Captain. His dive travel company, Blue Kirio Travel, specializes in personalized dive tours to the world’s top dive destinations. The tours cater to underwater photographers and marine-life enthusiasts, and generally utilize top rate live-aboard dive boats.

FROM THE AUTHOR

A variety of people and organizations assisted in compiling and updating this guidebook. I would like to thank every-

one in the Hawaiian dive industry for their contributions of local knowledge and expertise, use of dive vessels and accommodations over the years. I would also like to give a special thanks to the following individuals for their assistance with this most recent update.

From the Big Island; Paul Warren of Hualalai Watersports, Teri Leicher, Jacks Diving Locker, Rich Kersten, Sea Para-dise and Mendy Dant, Fairwind Cruises. From Maui; Eric Stein, Extended Hori-zons, Pauline Severens, Mike Severens Diving, Diana Madaras, Maui Dive Shop, Hannah Bernard, President Hawaii Wildlife Fund and Charley Neal, Scuba Shack Maui. From Oahu; Randy and Suzette, Captain Bruce Scuba, Bob, Oahu Dive Center, Captain Nick, Waikiki Dive Center, Devon Merrifield, Reef Trekkers Hawaii, Aqua Zone Scuba and Andre. From Kauai; Linda Marsh, Sea-sport Divers, Bubbles Below and Marvin Otsuji.

PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT

Though digital photography is becom-ming the norm, you will find that all photographs in this book, unless noted, were taken by Casey and Astrid Ma-haney using a variety of film cameras and formats.

For macro and close-up photography the Nikon 8008s and N90s fitted with either a 105mm or 60mm lens in an Ikelite housing were used. Wide-angle photographs were taken using either a Nikon 20mm or 14mm lens in a Nexus housing, or with Nikonos III and V cam-eras with a 15mm lens.

Topside shots were taken with Nikon cameras and a wide variety of lenses, including zoom lenses. The preferred film of choice was Fujichrome slide films, which included Velvia, Provia and Sensia II.
