January 21, 2018 Epiphany 3

WELCOME TO WORSHIPWe’re happy you’re here to worship with us! We pray that the Lord bless you through his Word this morning.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask one of the greeters or anyone else.

Restrooms – There are restrooms out the back doors and down the second hallway on the right.

Parents, we are so glad that you have brought your little children to church this morning. If needed, there is a nursery out the back doors to the right.

We recognize that our new sanctuary is a little “echo-y” and apologize for any sound difficulties. We are working to remedy the problem. The best place to sit to avoid reverberation is near the middle.

SERVICE OF WORD AND SACRAMENTThis order of worship builds on the heritage of the ancient rite of the Western Church and focuses our attention on the Word of God and the gift of our Savior’s Sacrament.

1

The Season of EpiphanyThe word “Epiphany” comes from the Greek word for “appearance” referring to the appearance of Christ as the Savior. During this season (Jan 6 – Ash Wednesday) we consider how the “true light” was shown to be the Son of God and Savior of all (both Jews and Gentiles). Epiphany provides us with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the revealing of God’s love and light in Jesus without the worldly distractions of the holiday season. Looking ahead… January 7 – We get to know Jesus by baptism – his and ours. January 14 – Jesus gives us the desire and ability to follow through the Word January 21 – Jesus’ call to follow changes lives January 28 – Jesus comes with authority and power over Satan

OPENING HYMN Jesus Shall Reign Where’er The Sun | 84

INVOCATION*

M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you

CONFESSION†

M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

ABSOLUTION‡

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore as a called servant of Christ and by his command, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

* Worship begins “in the name of” (invocation) the one true God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. At the very beginning of worship we are reminded of the words spoken in baptism where God puts his name on us. It is only because of God’s undeserved love for us that worship is even possible.† As we approach God in worship we are brutally honest about who we are, what we have done, and what we deserve from God. Instead of hiding our sin, we run to the only solution – God’s mercy in Christ. ‡ Since Jesus himself has promised to forgive all those who repent of their sins and told us to forgive the repentant, the declaration of forgiveness is as valid and certain as if Christ himself stood before us and declared our sins forgiven.

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray.Almighty God, you sent your Son to proclaim your kingdom and to teach with authority. Anoint us with the power of your Spirit that we, too, may bring good news to the afflicted, bind up the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captive; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Word**

THE FIRST LESSON 1 Kings 19:19-21Elijah went from being a farmer to a prophet. We went from being sinners, to God’s righteous children. Therefore, we respond in the same way Elisha did, with thanksgiving.

19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the

§ With a swift change of mood, in an outburst of joy and praise to the Holy Trinity our response lifts us from self to contemplation of the divine and from consciousness of human need to glorification of God’s majesty, power, and holiness. ** The public reading from Scripture can be traced back to the synagogue service (Luke 4:16-21). From Apostolic times the reading of carefully chosen lessons from the Apostles and Evangelists has been the central part of Christian worship.

twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.”“Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.

VERSE OF THE DAY Matthew 4:23M: Alleluia. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching, preaching, and

healing every disease. Alleluia.

THE GOSPEL LESSON Mark 1:14-20Christ’s call changed the lives of Simon and Andrew. Through his righteousness, Christ also changes our lives, enabling us to serve him in everything we do, no matter our vocation!

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and

they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. HYMN OF THE DAY I Hear the Savior Calling | 560

SERMON TEXT 1 Corinthians 7:29-3129 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; 30 those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; 31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.

SERMON

IN the World, but not OF the World1 Corinthians 7:29-31

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth…of all that is, seen and unseen

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried.

Page 8: Divine Service I - Web viewyou through his Word . this ... God invites us to come into his presence and worship him ... us from self to contemplation of the divine and from consciousness

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.OFFERING

“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” - 2 Corinthians 9:7

DISTRIBUTION Guests: Living Savior practices member communion. We do this because the Bible teaches that not only do we receive Christ’s true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins in Holy Communion, but we are also confessing a oneness in the faith. For this reason, if you are not a member of Living Savior or the WELS, we want to give you a chance to learn what we believe and teach before we ask you to join us for communion. Please speak to Pastor if you are interested in joining us for communion in the future. Thank you.Members: Personal Preparation for Holy Communion can be found on page 156 in the front of the hymnal.

DISTRIBUTION MUSIC Instrumental

THANK THE LORD‡‡ This beautiful song summarizes the redeeming work of Christ and prepares our hearts and minds for communion. It has been sung in the liturgy since about 700 AD.
