TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We return to our reflections on the rites of marriage with a brief consideration of reforms from the Council of Trent. When the Protestant Reformation took hold, the fairly recent achieve-ments of the Church in regard to the sacrament of marriage were reviewed with a critical, reforming eye. In general, Protestants returned to an earlier view that marriage was a civil matter, although some said that the civil society had to be in har-mony with Christian teaching. In the Catholic Church, the Council of Trent took the question up in 1563, and decided to shore up its teaching on the sacramentality of marriage. They identi-fied many threats to this, including secret mar-riages and easy divorce. So they enacted laws that still govern our practice today: to be valid, marriage consent must be exchanged in the pres-ence of a priest and two witnesses. Ever since Trent, marriages must also be announced three weeks in advance to the community, and record-ed in a register. In some places in the world, the “banns” are still posted in the public square. In the United States, parishes sometimes publish the “banns” in the bulletin. Anyone who has ever watched a soap opera has seen the standard scene of a minister an-nouncing gravely, “If there is anyone here pre-sent who sees any reason why these two should not be married . . .” This bit of drama has no place in the Catholic liturgy, but survives among Protestants who broke with us before Trent edit-ed this cliff-hanger out of our public prayer.

Sunday of Divine Mercy 2016 Dear Friends, It is early Sunday morning and the two Mary’s, after resting on the Sab-

bath, are back at the tomb. In Matthew’s Gospel, they do not bring oils to anoint the body of Jesus, for the

tomb is guarded and sealed. They have simply come “to see the tomb” - just as I might visit the grave of someone I love.

What they see is not what they expected. An angel comes down from heaven and causes an earthquake. Then the angel

rolls back the stone, despite it having been sealed, and sits on it. The tomb is empty. This place of death has become the cradle of life, not only for Jesus, but for all of us.

Jesus truly is the resurrection and the life. If we believe in him, even though we

die, we will live and never die. Do we really believe this? This is what our faith is all about! Happy Divine Mercy Sunday!!

The Resurrection of Jesus.1a After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning,* Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.2* b And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it.3c His ap-pearance was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow.4The guards were shaken with fear of him and became like dead men.5Then the angel said to the women in reply, “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the cruci-fied.6* He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.7d Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.”8Then they went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce* this to his disciples.

JOINING THE COMPANY OF BELIEVERS What will help you to believe? Today’s scripture readings tell of faith and doubt. They offer stories “recorded to help you be-lieve,” as the passage from John’s Gospel (20:31) re-

marks today. There is an urgency about this. On this Second Sunday of Easter we are challenged to join the company of believers—countless men and wom-en who witnessed the power of the apostles’ faith. There is no doubt that this power comes from Jesus Christ. The second reading, from the book of Revelation, reports John’s mystical vision of the Son of Man, who proclaims, “Once I was dead, but now I live” (Revelation 1:18). The Gospel gathers everyone but Thomas to see the Risen Jesus and re-ceive the Holy Spirit from him. Like Thomas, we who have come along later must have faith so that we can have life.

UNIRSE A LA COMUNIDAD DE CREYENTES ¿Qué te ayu-dará a tener fe?
