A note with hot cross bun order forms will be sent home soon when costs are finalised with the canteen. It would be wonderful if all parents/carers could join us in this community event. School Community Charter The Department of Education is committed to the new School Community Charter which outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW Public Schools. The charter states that “NSW public schools work to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that support student learning. We strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for. The best education happens when parents and schools work together.” Please see flyer included in this newsletter. Safety Around Schools The students at Jesmond Public School are our main priority. The staff have discussed some important safety rules with our students to encourage them to be act responsibly around our school. Some key points to remember: 1. Drop off and pick up by car Make sure your children are in an appropriate child car seat that is fitted and used correctly. Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in a school zone as children are about. Always park and turn legally around schools. Avoid dangerous manoeuvres such as U-turns and three-point turns. Always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways. Drop your children off and pick them up on the school side of the road in your school’s designated drop off and pick up area. Calling out to them from across the road is dangerous – they may run to you without checking for traffic. It’s safest for children to get out of the car on the kerb side of the road to be away from passing traffic. 2. Helmet and safety on wheels Your child must wear a helmet when riding a bike in any public place – it’s the law. Check that your child wears a bicycle helmet whenever playing or riding on wheels – bikes, foot scooters, roller skates, skateboards or rollerblades. Although children quickly learn to pedal, steer and brake, they are not ready to cycle near traffic or on the road. Children under 12 and adult riders accompanying and supervising them may ride on the footpath, unless there are signs specifically prohibiting cycling. When riding on the footpath, cyclists must keep to the left and give way to pedestrians. 3. Smoking Smoking has been prohibited on all school premises and in administrative areas since July 1988. Smoking on school premises, including school buildings, gardens, sports fields and car parks, is prohibited. This includes students, employees, visitors and other people who use school premises, including community groups.

The Smoke-free Environment Act 2000 (the Act) requires enclosed public places to be smoke-free. The Act also requires certain outdoor areas to be smoke-free including within 10 metres from children’s playgrounds, public swimming pool complexes, public transport stops and stations, spectator areas of sports grounds Please continue to support our school in being a safe area for our students, staff and wider community members. Have an amazing week. Deborah Kelly Breakfast Club Breakfast Club will be starting up again on Monday 18th March. It will operate from 8:30 am until 8:55 am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the school term. This is a great opportunity for your child to start their school day with a healthy breakfast of fruit, toast, cereal, milk and juice. As well as the associated health benefits of eating a nutritious breakfast (e.g. increased energy levels, improved memory and concentration, provider of essential nutrients and increased metabolism), research also reports a significant increase in academic performance in students. Thank you to Woolworths Jesmond for their ongoing support in offering to supply our school with the products used for Breakfast Club throughout the year. Regards, Mr Conway

School Photos School Photos for all classes K-6 will be taken on Monday 8th April by MSP Photography and envelopes will be sent home in Week 9. Families will have the option of paying online through the MSP website or paying on the day. Instructions on how to pay online are included on the back of the envelopes. All student photo envelopes must be returned on photo day, regardless of how payment is made. Please do not return the photo envelopes until the day of school photos, Monday 8th April. MSP Photography staff will be available on the day for any enquiries and to help with payments that may require change.

Positive environmentsIt is important that our NSW public schools are positive environments and that parents and carers are kept informed of students’ progress and school announcements.

Parents and carers can expect:• to be welcomed into our schools

to work in partnership to promote student learning.

• communication from school staff will be timely, polite and informative.

• professional relationships with school staff are based on transparency, honesty and mutual respect.

• to be treated fairly. Tolerance and understanding are promoted as we respect diversity.

Unacceptable behaviour may include but is not limited to: • Aggressive or intimidating actions, such as violence, threatening gestures or physical proximity.• Aggressive or intimidating language, including the use of obscenities, making sexist, racist or

derogatory comments or using a rude tone.• Treating members of the school community differently due to aspects such as their religion or disability.• Inappropriate and time wasting communication.

Communicating with our schoolsOur staff will find a time to talk to you when they can give you their full attention. Please remember that while our staff are in class or dealing with other matters, they may not be available to answer your questions immediately.

Our schools and communities will make sure that written communication is appropriate, fair and easy to read. We encourage you to use email and social media appropriately to connect with your school and stay up-to-date with up-coming events in the school community.

Our guide for parents, carers and students provides useful information about the complaints process: education.nsw.gov.au/about-us/rights-and-accountability/complaints-compliments-and-suggestions/guide-for-parents-carers-and-students

Respectful communication is a rightIn all workplaces people have the right to feel respected. Unacceptable and offensive behaviour has no place in our school communities.

To ensure the wellbeing of students, staff and the community in our schools, steps will be taken to address unacceptable behaviour. This may include restricting contact with the school community or, in more serious cases, referral to NSW Police.
