Guidance Lesson

Cross Cultural Effectiveness

Grades: k-2nd grade

Time: 30-40 minutes

Target audience: whole group guidance lesson

Objective: Students will learn to appreciate their own culture while respecting others as individuals and relate effectively with others based on appreciation for differences. They will increase their understanding of uniqueness and acceptance of others.

Materials:

Elmer by David McKee an elephant cutout for each student scissors crayons or markersPre-reading:

Define unique

Discuss and identify ways people are unique or different. Discuss ways of accepting people.

Talk about how people are unique regardless of gender, physical appearance, language, etc.

Realize the importance of accepting others for who they are, their gifts, and talents.

Read aloud: Elmer. After reading the book discuss feelings about the story and about Elmer. Discuss what makes us unique and why we are special.

Independent practice:

Give each student an elephant handout.

Pass out markers or colors.

Each student will create their own unique Elmer.

Closure:

If time allows, give each child an opportunity to discuss what makes him unique and special.

Display the elephants on a bulletin board and discuss how no two elephants are alike.
