Foreshadowing Practice: Read the Passage below and answer the 2 questions
ì 1) One fine summer day, Grasshopper was hopping about in the field. As he chirped and danced, he spied Ant carrying a big kernel of corn to his nest. Grasshopper watched as Ant came back, lifted another kernel, then carried it to the nest as well. This happened repeatedly. Finally, Grasshopper asked, "Ant, why do you work so hard on such a lovely day?"
ì (2) "Soon it will be winter," replied Ant. "I'm gathering food for my family. I suggest you do the same!"
ì (3) "Why bother about winter?" asked Grasshopper. "There's plenty of food in the fields now!" ì (4) Ant remembered last winter and how deep snow had covered everything. There had been no
way to get out of his anthill, let alone try to find food! Now, an even worse winter was predicted. "You'll feel differently when the big snow comes!" said Ant, as he shook his head and walked away.
ì (5) When winter came, Grasshopper had no food. The fields were covered with deep snow. Grasshopper was very hungry and sad, knowing that Ant had food enough because he had worked hard to prepare in advance.
ì Which best foreshadowed what might happen in the story? ì a. Grasshopper hopped about in the field. ì b. An even worse winter was predicted. ì c. Ant walked away. ì d. Grasshopper chirped.
ì Based on the story, which do you predict could NOT happen? ì a. Grasshopper begs Ant for just a small bit of food. ì b. Ant feels sorry for Grasshopper and gives him food. ì c. Grasshopper digs under the snow and finds lots of food. ì d. Grasshopper gets weaker without any food.

Personfication is:
ì ___________________________________________________________________________________________________
ì The __________________________________________________________ are portrayed in such a way that we feel they have the ability to ________________________________________________________.
ì Personification is not merely a decorative device but it serves the purpose of giving deeper meanings to literary texts. It adds vividness to expressions as we always look at the world from a human perspective. Writers and poets rely on personification to bring inanimate things to life, so that their nature and actions are understood in a better way. Because it is easier for us to relate to something that is human or that possesses human traits. Its use encourages us to develop a perspective that is new as well as creative.
Personfication Examples:
ì “The fire swallowed the entire forest.”
ì What is the literal meaning of the sentence above? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Simile is:
ì ___________________________________________________________________________________________________
ì Unlike a __________________________________________, a _______________________________________ draws resemblance with the help of the words “like” or “as”. Therefore, it is a direct comparison.
ì We can find simile examples in our daily speech. We often hear comments like “John is as slow as a snail.” Snails are notorious for their slow pace and here the slowness of John is compared to that of a snail. The use of “as” in the example helps to draw the resemblance.
Simile Examples: ì “Our soldiers are as brave as lions.”

Conflict is:
ì ___________________________________________________________________________________________________
ì Conflict is necessary to propel a narrative forward; the absence of _____________________________ amounts to the absence of ________________________________________________
ì There are two main kinds of conflict in stories: __________________________ and _____________________.
External Conflict is:
ì ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________
ì Characters may face several types of ______________________________________________
ì The outside force may be __________________________________________________
ì It may be the ______________________________________ or __________________________________________
ì The outside force may also be forces of __________________________________________.
ì For example, a story might be the main character struggling against the arctic cold.
Internal Conflict is:
ì ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________
ì For example, a character may have to decide between _____________________________ and
_________________________ or between two solutions to a problem. Sometimes, a character must deal with his or her own mixed feelings or emotions.
ì Character vs. _____________________________________
So, what’s the difference?:
ì An internal conflict is just that– a conflict that takes place internally. This is better known as character vs. self.
ì An external conflict is a conflict that can be seen physically. We know external conflicts as character vs. character, character vs. nature, and character vs. society.
Conflict Examples/Practice:
ì ______________________________________________________: A situation in which two characters have opposing desires or interests. The typical scenario is a conflict between the protagonist and antagonist.
ì (Harry Potter vs. Voldemort)
ì ______________________________________________________: In this type of conflict, a character must take on society itself, and not a single person. The character stands at odds with societal norms and realizes the necessity to work against these norms.
ì (Shrek vs. Society)
ì ______________________________________________________: In this type of conflict, a character is tormented by natural forces such as storms or animals.
ì (Moby Dick vs. White Whale)
ì ______________________________________________________: This conflict develops from a protagonist’s inner struggles, and may depend on a character trying to decide between good and evil or overcome self-doubts. This conflict has both internal and external aspects, as obstacles outside the protagonist force the protagonist to deal with inner issues.
ì (Ponyboy vs. Greaser Identity)
