Introduction to Digital Photography 101
Kyle BurkeTwo Boys in Torino
I had been walking in Torino that day focused on
taking portraits of those people who stood out. A
man in a purple velvet suit jacket, a mime taking
a break from work, an old man taking a picture of
his granddaughter on a cellular phone. I saw a
young boy squatting outside of a church, lowering
himself from the surrounding parental chit-chat
and boredom at eye level. His eyes fixated on
nothingness, his mind in a another place. As I
bent to take the picture his brother looked over in
sheer curiosity, but that isn't this shot. By the time
I had snapped for a second time, his older brother
stood dumbfounded while the boy looked up with
pure indifference. They no longer stood out, it ap-
pears they fit right in.

My work depicts the stages of life. Beginning with
a child we see young people, people in an age
where they seem to have no time to seize the day,
and ending with an old man who is full of energy
and youth, with open eyes he looks as curious
and open as a child.

Introduction to Photojournalism
Taylor HammerlUntitled
My photos represent the irony behind the process
of transforming our appearances into something
beautiful. The process itself completely distorts
who we are to begin with. We pull our faces, we
layer on make up, and make ourselves suffer in
hopes of creating something that changes us for
the better.

This photo represents the beginning of my Flo-
rence study abroad journey. The window signifies
the closing of a chapter of a part of my life as well
as the beginning of a new one. The darkness in
the foreground is representative of leaving behind
my old life and the light through the window signi-
fies the many new prospects of this new journey
that lie ahead. In addition, it represents the new
lens through which this experience will allow me
to look at the world. Although the journey's end is
unknown, the adventures along the way are
bound to be full of excitement and fulfillment.

Friday's Child is a video portrait of my Icelandic friend, Gudmunder Hilmar, who is currently liv-
ing in Florence. I shot the video on the banks of the Arno and set it to music by Lee Hazle-
wood, which seemed appropriate to the subject. I shot this video thinking about video as
photography, ie. moving pictures.
