DISTURBANCES IN BUDAPEST PROVOCKED
BY COUNTER- REVOLUTIONARY ELEMENTS
Budapest 24 (Agerpress) – In the evening of October 23, reactionary and subversive
organizations tried to provoke a counter-revolutionary rebellion against the people’s power in
Budapest. It is obvious that this hostile adventure had been prepared for a long time –foreign
reactionary forces systematically inciting anti-popular elements to act against the legal power.
Hostile elements used the students' manifestation held on October 23 in the capital of
Hungary as a pretext to bring into the streets groups previously prepared, which formed the nucleus
of the rebellion. They used agitators who tried to provoke mass turmoil by sowing confusion among
the population.
Some public institutions and enterprises were attacked. Fascist hooligans, crossing the line,
begun to burgle stores, break windows of residential houses and institutions, and try to break
industrial equipment. Detachments of rebels who succeeded in procuring arms, provoked bloodshed
in some locations.
The revolutionary forces started to impose resistance to the rebels. The new President of the
Council of Ministers, Imre Nagy, ordered curfew in the city.
The government of the Hungarian People’s Republic asked the government of the USSR for
aid.
In accordance with this request and based on the provisions of the Warsaw Treaty, Soviet
military units stationed in Hungary assisted the troops of the Hungarian People’s Republic in their
action to reimpose order in Budapest. In many factories, workers offered armed resistance by
setting up armed guards against the bandits who were trying to damage and destroy industrial
equipment.
Toward the end of October 24, the hostile adventure was liquidated. Order was restored in
Budapest. The President of the Council of Ministers, Imre Nagy, spoke on the Radio on October 24,
asking the people to stay calm and maintain order.
The counter-revolutionaries' attempt to find partisans in Debrecen and other cities failed.
Telegrams are being sent to the Central Committee of the Workers' Party in Hungary by
people from all over the country, expressing their profound indignation regarding the criminal
actions of the counter-revolutionaries and ensuring the party and the government that they are
prepared to defend stoutly the democratic and popular regime against any attempts by the enemy.
by the enemy.
