Bainville boys squad comes into the District 2-C tournament as the complete underdog team. With a losing record of 0-12, the Bulldogs will be given the toughest chance to compete in the tour-nament starting as the lowest-seeding team in the tournament.

And the competition that the Bainville team will face is stiff.

“Fairview is the strongest team in our conference,” Bainville head coach Tanya Wilson said. “Both Fairview and Westby/Grenora do a great job of work-ing together to make it more difficult to defend them.”

But the Bulldogs’ record doesn’t ac-count for some close games that they played earlier in the season within their conference.

“We have had a few competitive games that could have turned out differently this season,” Wilson said. “Some of those teams included Brockton, Froid/Lake, R&L Fusion and Savage.”

One of the close games Wilson talked about included a 54-52 loss to Brockton on Dec. 22. Losing only by two points, the Bainville squad has some hope if they do come across the same Brockton

team in the tournament. The Bainville squad has some talent

to watch for in the tournament. Skilled Bulldogs include junior guard Chance Hyatt who averages 15 points per game,

while junior forward Rhett Harmon av-erages 12 points and eight rebounds per game. Another talented player is junior center Russell Bowker who averages 12 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Drue Nelson also leads the Bainville team. “He is strong defen-sive player and team leader,” Wilson said.

The Bulldogs from Bainville will rely on their guards’ speed throughout the tournament, Wilson said. The players continue to learn about themselves and work on transitioning the ball through-out the season.

“Our guards are very quick athletes who like to play fast,” Wilson said. “We are learning how to be more effective at the transition game.”

And while not heard from as much as other players on the Bainville roster, there are some other players that aid Bainville on the courts.

“We also start a junior forward who is playing basketball for the first time this year, Tony Lozano,” Wilson said. “He has made many important defensive stops for us this year. Freshman Beau Hyatt, Michael Sheehan and sophomore Collin Ryder give us important minutes as well.”

So don’t count out the fast Bulldogs from Bainville who look to compete at a high level in the tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs of Bainville earned their first win of the season on Feb. 2, when they faced the Brockton Lady Warriors. Bainville girls won 48-44 in the District 2-C contest. And its better late than never as they go into the Dis-trict 2-C tournament with a 1-11 record, ranked last in their conference.

But any team in the District 2-C will have the opportunity to surprise other teams with a win.

On Feb. 1, the Bainville girls lost to Froid-Lake with the score 50-40. The Lady Redhawks are a middle-ranked team in the 2-C district, giving the Lady Bulldogs some hope in their game.

As the season progressed, the Bain-ville girls have improved their game dramatically, and while still earning losses instead of wins, the scores seem to be dramatically different as the post-season came closer.

Don’t be surprised when the Bainville girls squad gets an upset win early on in the District 2-C tournament!

The Brockton Warriors have been a strong team in the District 2-C despite their 2-9 record. They are ahead of last-placed Bainville Bulldogs, which doesn’t give them the worst seeding go-ing into the tournament either.

On Feb. 1. they gave the Savage War-riors a close game as they lost 58-52, hanging on until the very end of the game in the conference loss.

But on Feb. 2, the Brockton Warriors redeemed themselves with a 73-55 win over the Bainville Bulldogs. Brockton had its first victory over the Bainville squad on Dec. 22, in a close 54-52 game, but nonetheless, a conference win for the Warriors.

The Warriors squad is led by Chance Roberts, who is one of the most talented players in the league.

Brockton comes into the District 2-C tournament with a little more experi-ence than the Warriors had originally started out the season. The Warriors play tough physically and mentally, not backing down to their opponents no matter what the scoreboard says.

The Brockton Lady Warriors may have a 3-8 record in the District 2-C conference, but with recent wins, mo-mentum could spring the Brockton girls for a few important wins to begin the tournament.

On Feb. 1, the Brockton girls hosted the Savage Lady Warriors in Culbert-son. The hosting Lady Warriors defeat-ed the visitors with a 56-38 score. The two Warriors squads met earlier in the regular season when Savage delivered Brockton a 52-42 loss on Jan. 15.

Other important wins for the Brock-ton team include a 52-47 victory over the Froid-Lake Lady Redhawks who go into the District 2-C tournament with a 5-7 record.

Don’t sleep on the Lady Warriors from Brockton who have a talented roster.

April Brown and Kym Boyd lead the Brockton girls in scoring.

A big weakness that is inevitable for Brockton remains to be depth and size on the bench. Going up against big-ger teams, both size and numbers may cause problems for Brockton in the District 2-C tournament.

The Wildcats from Circle remain to

be top competition within the District 2-C. With a 9-3 record, they remain neck-in-neck with Fairview, Westby/Grenora teams and Culbertson teams.

Coach Colby Loudon and his Wild-cats team know that every team is out for the big win in the tournament.

“Our district is very tough again this year, with many dominate seniors still in the league,” Loudon said. “Fairview, Westby/Grenora and Culbertson seem to have the early advantage, but sev-eral teams are playing well.”

The Wildcats suffered two District 2-C losses to the undefeated Fairview boys team, but districts could hold a different game story.

The Wildcats have a talented and tall team to compete this year in the tournament.

The Circle squad is led in scoring by guard Bryce Loudon, post James Ford and forward Ryan Kasten.

Other individual key players on the Circle squad include Lee Delp, Collin Yaarger, Dolan Taylor, Jacob Boysen, Dalton Speer and Jonathon Cornelia, who Loudon said all “see valuable minutes for the Cats as well.”

While any team can score, the Circle boys game plan focuses around its defensive game and stopping power-houses like Fairview, Westby/Grenora and Culbertson teams.

Defensively, Circle boys adjust to whatever teams they are playing, judg-ing how they should choose to defend based on the others’ style of play.

“Circle plays a variety of man and zone defenses,” Loudon said.

Other than watching the Circle team do well in the District 2-C tournament, Loudon said he is excited to watch the rest of the competition.

Loudon is looking forward to watch-ing not only his Wildcats compete within the district tournament, but watching Westby/Grenora’s Brady Olson and Fairview’s Brock Schriver play on the court.

“Brady Olson and Brock Schriver will be fun to watch as these two se-niors have started in the league since freshmen, and look to take their teams to the next level,” Loudon said.

The Circle boys squad has just as good a chance as any other team in the tournament to do well.

girls,” Circle girls head coach Jason Jes-son said. “The games this year are all going to be very exciting.”

Jesson and his Circle team are watch-ing out for powerhouse teams like West-by/Grenora, Culbertson and Fairview.

“Westby/Grenora has some tall, physi-

cal girls that are very tough,” Jesson said. “Culbertson always plays Circle tough and Fairview is fast and plays tough defense.”

Despite the strength that these teams have had over the Lady Wildcats, Jesson and his team aren’t backing down to them. Circle splits with Fairview this season.

“I really don’t expect for any of these games against these teams to be blow outs,” Jesson said. “It will take all four quarters to determine a winner.”

But before Circle can compete at the top of its game amongst big contenders in the District 2-C, taking care of the ball is key and something Circle has been working on to improve.

“Foul trouble and shooting percent-ages would be aspects I would like to improve on going into the tournament,” Jesson said.

The Lady Wildcats are a young squad that continues to learn from each game and develop their skills as individuals and a team.

“They have a ton of heart and never quit,” Jessen said. “Even if things are tough.”

The Culbertson Cowboys will rely on depth and experienced players to com-pete in the District 2-C tournament.

“I think that our depth is an advan-tage over some teams,” Culbertson head coach Verlin Steppler said. “I look to our seniors to really step up come tournament time. This is their last ride, and I think they are looking forward to competing for a chance to go on to divisionals.”

But if the starting Cowboys squad happens to run into foul trouble or can’t seem to deliver, Steppler knows that he can rely on others on the team to get the job done.

“I think our bench play has been steadily improving,” Steppler said. “Earlier in the season, we had some in-juries and absences that gave our bench some quality time. That will be impor-tant going in to tournament time.”

When looking at other threats among the District 2-C teams, the Fairview Warriors stick out in Steppler’s mind as a talented team that has developed a strong defensive core.

“They have had excellent success in the past few years,” Steppler said of the defending state champions. “A lot of it is because of their defensive intensity. This has spilled over into the other teams, and now everyone seems to play pretty good defense.”

Despite the obvious favorites going into the tournament, Steppler said it can be any team’s tournament to win and the Culbertson boys have a pretty good chance to advance deep into the tournament.

“I really think there are six or seven teams that have a legitimate shot of ad-vancing to the divisional tournament,” he said. “I think it will come down to what teams can put it all together come tourney time. Throughout the season everyone has pushed each other to be-

come better, and I think that will prove to be beneficial in the long run for the four teams that do advance on to the divisional tournament.”

The Cowgirls from Culbertson have progressed into a talented team that can be a threat to any teams’ record.

The Culbertson team defeated the once undefeated Westby/Grenora squad with the score 43-33 late in the season. Despite the big conference win, the Cowgirls continue to learn and improve on their play.

“As the season has progressed, every team has thrown us a challenge in at least one aspect of our game,” Culbert-son head coach Ashley Sullivan said. “We have gone into half-time of every game with something that we need to improve upon, and the district tourna-ment is sure to bring new challenges with every opponent.”

But it’s not just the starters on Culb-ertson’s roster that Sullivan will look to to do well in the tournament.

“We have had to rely on our bench a few times this season when we have gotten into foul trouble,” Sullivan said. “Every one of the girls on the Cowgirls roster knows our defensive expecta-tions, and I have full confidence in the bench should we get into foul trouble in the post-season.”

And Culbertson’s bench will aid in more than just foul troubled players.

“Playing more games in a shorter span of time, our depth will be a benefit to us,” Sullivan said. “Ideally, getting lots of girls some time in games is the goal. As for any team, this should reduce our chances of fatigue and/or injury.”

Culbertson has had stiff competition in a lot of the games it had played in the regular season, but Fairview and Westby/Grenora girls seems to have given the Cowgirls’ squad the most dif-ficulty.

“So far this season, Fairview and Westby/Grenora have been our tough-est match-ups; and Circle also played us very well,” Sullivan said. “Those teams will give anyone trouble.”

But there are no excuses for any team going into the District 2-C tournament.

“We need to show up mentally focused to take on any team we encounter throughout this tournament,” Sullivan said. “The way the second half of the season has gone for this league shows that no one has an easy road to the next round of the post-season.”

Sullivan said the Cowgirls continue to work on communication on the floor because they cannot talk enough. “If we do well with our communication for a whole game, it will prevent us from some of the mental breakdowns we have encountered.”

And overall, Sullivan and the Culb-ertson girls will rely on each other to compete through the tournament.

“The Cowgirls’ team chemistry has really become a huge asset for us,” Sul-livan said. “All seven of the girls who get a lot of varsity time work well with each other, and our seniors (Kate Reid,

Shelby Weeks and Tori Kirkaldie) have been great leaders for us. Junior Erica Nickoloff has been an extremely steady player for us, and the underclassmen (Emily Nielsen, Zandie Bighorn and

Ashton Handy) have really stepped up and done a great job as well. We are looking forward to a great tournament and wish luck to all the teams.”

The Fairview Lady Warriors go into the District 2-C tournament with a mod-est record in the conference. With losses to Circle, Culbertson and Westby/Gre-nora, Fairview faces challenges going into the tournament.

“Westby/Grenora and Culbertson pro-vide the biggest challenge,” Fairview head coach Mark Thompson said. “But you can’t sleep on Circle or Froid-Lake. We’re going to have to be ready to play every night.”

The team’s last loss against Westby/Grenora showed a positive reflection of Fairview’s bench more than a loss in the conference. The Lady Warriors were down a key player in Bailey Schriver during the game.

Thompson said he thinks the girls responded positively despite the loss. “They know that if they put their mind to it they are a good team,” Thompson said.

When asked about Schriver’s health come tournament time, Thompson is hopeful. “She is doing more in prac-tice each day with some stiffness and soreness,” he said. “Conditioning may also be a factor for her and being a little

rusty.”Other key contributors for Fairview

include a defensive powerhouse in Ma-syn Klose. “We are for sure a different team when Masyn is on the floor and I think she is starting to realize that,” Thompson said. “She needs to play smarter and stay out of foul trouble. We aren’t very deep so everyone needs to play smart and aggressive at the same time.”

Aggressive offensive players for Fairview include the always dependable Trisha Hurley and Brittany Schneider. A big fourth-quarter contributor in Abby Lebsock will help the team toward the ends of each of the games. While Lebsock is a starter, she seems to pick up the pace for her team and motivate them in the last eight minutes of every game.

“I want the girls to be ready to play every night no matter who we are play-ing,” Thompson said. “We set aside goals for every game and want to reach those goals. We want to get better with every game. Learn from each one and move forward.”

And when it comes to what the team has been focusing on improving, one word comes to Thompson’s mind.

“Turnovers,” Thompson said. “We

need to do a better job of taking care of the ball. We need to value each and every possession. We are averaging around 20 turnovers a game and if we can’t cut that down in half, we won’t play very far in the post season.”

The Fairview girls squad has qualified for the past three state tournaments, and this year the team could follow a similar path.

The Fairview boys squad come into the District 2-C tournament with a win-ning record and a target on their backs. The team’s undefeated record has been challenged at times throughout the regular season with some close ball games.

“I feel that there are any number of teams that will be challenging when tournament gets here,” Fairview head coach Luke Kloker said. “Westby, Circle and Culbertson have good players and coaches and are playing well. You can-not count any of the other teams out either as they all can beat anyone on any given night.”

Offensively, teams looking to over-come the Fairview Warriors know that junior Justin Bieber and senior Brock Schriver are their main go-to guys. But the Fairview team adjusts well when it comes to finding other scorers. “Schriv-er and Bieber have been our most consistent scorers,” Kloker said. “But we have had key contributions from a number of different players includ-ing Cody Vitt, Jonathan Shaide, Monte Cayko and Ben Hardy.”

On the other side of the court, the Warriors’ squad continues to work on

its already solid defensive game. “Kyle Shelmerdine, Cody Shelmerdine, Logan Kjos and Jace Taylor have all played key roles on the defensive end throughout the season,” Kloker said.

Fairview’s long roster of talent will be good for making adjustments needed in

big games throughout the tournament. The team’s depth allows for flexibility with matching up to other teams.

“Our team is unselfish and has been doing a great job at taking whatever the defense gives us or adapting to the other teams’ strengths on offense,” Kloker

Grenora boys squad on Jan. 26. Al-thought the Warriors earned a 60-45 vic-tory to finish out the game, the Thunder had a 27-19 lead over the Fairview team at the end of the first half.

“At half time of the Westby game, we mostly talked about being more aggres-sive on both ends of the floor,” Kloker said. “Attacking the basket and trying to get shots in the paint on offense, and putting more pressure on the opposing team on defense.”

The Warriors were able to top the Westby/Grenora team that night and have continued to play hard in every victory.

Kloker said his team knows what they are capable of achieving come the end of the season, but they will take it one game at a time going into the tourna-ment.

“As far as the state projections, we have some very simple goals this season and they are what we talk about,” Kloker said. “We want to have a high seed going into the 2-C tourney, we want to defend our homecourt, and we want to play in the last game of every tourna-ment.”

The Lady Redhawks of Froid-Lake go into the District 2-C tournament with a 4-8 record and stand just about in the middle of the conference.

The Froid-Lake girls have had wins against teams including Bainville on Feb. 1, with the score 50-40 and a 46-32 victory against the R&L Fusion girls squad.

Froid-Lake head coach Paul Deub-ner said his team will find challenges against all of the teams that are to compete in the District 2-C tournament, but the Lady Redhawks particulary look forward to facing the Lady Warriors of Savage again.

Top scorers include senior Callie Hen-drickson and freshman Abbie Deubner.

Deubner said the Lady Redhawks depend on tough defense from their top defenders that include senior Ashlin Johnson and Abbie Deubner.

“When we depend on speed,” Deubner said the team relies on junior Nicole Kirby, senior Skyler Ereth and junior Lacey Hove.

The Froid-Lake girls will use their speed to their advantage in the tourna-ment.

The Froid-Lake boys squad has been working on avoiding turnovers in pre-paring for the District 2-C tournament.

Head coach Josh Stentoft said the team has been working on more secure handling and taking care of the ball on offense.

Stentoft said every team will be a challenge for the Redhawks squad and they will not look past any of their op-ponents, despite their record.

The Froid-Lake boys are about in the middle of the 2-C standings.

The Redhawks are just below Culb-ertson in the District 2-C standings and will have a slight advantage against teams like Savage, Brockton and Bain-ville who hold worse records.

Stentoft said Froid-Lake looks to play both the R&L Fusion and Culbertson again when the Herald asked what teams would be a great re-match after the regular season.

The team’s latest victory was a 86-59 win against Bainville on Feb. 1. The conference win is a booster for the Red-hawks squad as they go into the District 2-C tournament.

On Jan. 26, the Froid-Lake team also had a big conference victory over the Brockton Warriors squad with the score 49-27.

If the Froid-Lake team can avoid as many turnovers as possible, the Red-hawks will be strong contenders in the tournament.

The Westby/Grenora girls squad has been in charge of the District 2-C for most of this season.

But just as the Thunder team looked to end its regular season undefeated, the Culbertson Cowgirls served Westby/Grenora its first loss of the season with the score 43-33.

“This regular season has been a season of unpredictability,” Westby/Grenora head coach Tony Holecek said. “Rather than the notion that we have a target on our back, we need to look at things as though we are in a field of teams that have the potential on any given night to beat each other.”

The key to Westby/Grenora’s success springs from the girls themselves and how they adjust to every team they play. Not just one Thunder player leads the team to success, rather the entire team, who as a whole plays unselfishly for the big win.

“I think one of our strong points is our ability as a team to shoot the ball,” Holecek said. “We have been getting scoring contributions from a large num-ber of players, and it has seemed to be a different player every night.”

The versatility of every player makes the Thunder an incredibly hard team to defend, which is OK with Holecek.

“As a coach, that is a great problem to have because it makes it very difficult for the opposition to prepare to stop our attack,” he said.

Another key factor that separates the Westby/Grenora team from other squads is the desire to get after the ball on either side of the court.

“We have been fairly solid in the rebounding categories especially on the offensive end,” Holecek said. “Our team is becoming more opportunistic defen-sively as our steals have continued to help our team get into transition. Along those same lines, we have held our op-ponents to 35.0 points per game while

scoring nearly 53.0 per game ourselves.”But no team can be perfect and the

Thunder is far from it. They are a team that continues to improve offensively and defensively. Holecek said the key to competing deep into the tourna-ment will be maintaining strong play throughout the games.

“One strength we need to improve upon is consistency,” Holecek said. “We need to find the ability to play at our highest level for a greater sustained amount of time. We will continue to emphasize playing our game and as we go into tournament time, hopefully the things we do best will shine through.”

The Westby/Grenora Thunder boys squad stands near the top of the District 2-C district and looks to be a big threat in the tournament.

Ranked second in the district behind the Fairview Warriors, the Thunder team looks to prove that it is worthy for the top spot in the conference.

Fairview delivered two losses to the Thunder boys, but the box score serves a big purpose in describing what kind of games the boys played against the Warriors.

Fairview just sneaked by in its first win when the hosting Westby/Grenora boys lost 56-54 on home turf on Dec. 21.

The Thunder traveled to Fairview on Jan. 26. in hopes of redeeming them-selves against the Warrior crew. With the score 27-19 at the halfway mark, Westby/Grenora looked to be overpow-ering Fairview. Adjustments made at halftime led the Warriors to defeat the Thunder 60-45 in a complete turnaround game.

And that didn’t sit well with Westby/Grenora who looks to redeem them-selves in the upcoming tournament.

Leading scorers for the Thunder team include seniors Adam Carlson and Brady Olson as well as sophomore Cooper Olson.

Big wins for the Westby/Grenora squad in the regular season included a 45-41 game over the Cowboys from Culbertson on Feb. 2, a 69-41 win over the R&L Fusion on Jan. 12. and a 58-27 victory over the Savage Warriors on Dec. 15.

The Thunder looks to be a high-seeded team and go into the District 2-C tourna-ment as one of the favorites to do well against other conference teams this week.

The R&L Fusion girls finished out its season still going hard on the basketball court. Earlier in the season, the loss of senior Alexis Johnson to a torn ACL was devastating to the team, but they refused to let it affect them completely.

“It was a huge loss, both physically and mentally for our team,” head coach Harlyn Olson said about losing John-son early in the season. “She was such a big presence on offense and defense. After rebounding and shot blocking, she would get the ball and demand attention on offense. Losing one of the top post players in the state is tough.”

But what seemed to be a negative for the team, the loss of Johnson, has brought the Fusion’s bench to shine.

“We started to use a lot of freshmen since losing Lexi,” Olson said. “We have more depth on the bench. We will play eight or nine kids throughout the game and not lose a whole lot by having them go in the game.”

Freshmen Shaye Johnston and Rachel Prevost have impacted their team by finding the basket a lot more this sea-son. Taylor Fink and Brittany White-man have also shown improvement as freshmen on the team.

“We have been really working with all four of our freshmen. They have all really improved throughout the last few games,” Olson said.

With Johnson sitting court side at the games, Jessica Williams, Taylor Brown and Michelle Switzer are the Fusion’s only upperclassmen with experience on the team.

“Taylor, Michelle and Jessica have all stepped up their games,” Olson said. “They have been floor leaders in the absence of Lexi.”

Olson isn’t concerned with the lack of experience that the Fusion roster now holds. “It’s later in the year and I am kind of hoping we can get over that in-experience thing. Hopefully they will be kind of over that.” The freshmen play-ers add raw talent, but come districts, talent needs to be tied in with poise.

“When you have younger girls out there that might be talented and ath-letic, but that varsity play will get to them at times,” Olson said.

The Fusion squad continues to work on taking care of the ball on offense. “We just need to get the ball in the hole,” Olson said. “We need to be getting our head up and seeing more of the floor.”

Capitalizing on trips to the free-throw line will also be vital in aiding the team in any kind of advancement into the district.

“Our girls have been disciplined on defense,” Olson said. “They play with an aggressive style, but not a lot of reaching.”

The R&L Fusion boys squad are just as much contenders as any other team that will be competing in the District 2-C tournament. The team’s main issue, however, is staying out of foul trouble, especially in the fourth quarter.

And the Fusion gang is working on their foul problems.

“It depends on the game,” R&L Fusion head coach Kara Triplett said. “But we will continue to work on getting better defensively to hopefully take care of this issue.”

The Fusion will face strong competi-tion within the tournament.

“Fairview, Culbertson, Westby/Greno-ra and Circle teams are playing pretty good basketball right now,” Triplett

said.The Fusion has a talented offense and

defense on the court. Key players in-clude senior Cameron Johnson, junior Lane Verschoot and junior Cameron Gomke.

But other important players that may be overlooked at first by opposing teams include sophomore Ryder Olson, junior Lars Kvaalen, junior Austin Schultz and junior Chris Sommerfeld.

“Olson can be an offensive threat and sees the floor very well,” Triplett said. “Kvaalen has taken over as our point right now, as he is doing a nice job un-derstanding offense and controlling his turnovers. He can shoot well. Schultz is a great defender and a smart player. Chris Sommerfeld has been doing a good job at the post, going strong to the basket and grabbing rebounds.”

The Fusion squad goes into the tour-nament with a below .500 record, but Triplett and the team are confident that they will out-perform what their record says about the team.

The Fusion has played some tough teams and they didn’t go down without a battle.

“We are excited to face whatever the match-up is as we continue to grow together and become a stronger unit, overall,” Triplett said.

And when the team does play tough throughout the entire game, their op-ponents will break a sweat.

The key to winning some games up front in the tournament will be a thorough execution on both offense and defense.

“We need to be more aggressive and assertive in the second half, particu-larly the third quarter,” Triplett said of the team.

“We know we are capable of playing very good basketball and have competed with the teams at the top,” Triplett said. “When we put together a full 32 min-utes, we will certainly be able to give teams a run for their money. We want to be playing in Wolf Point in a couple of weeks!”

The Savage Lady Warriors aren’t exactly the favorite in the District 2-C tournament, but they aren’t the easiest team to face either.

The young team is made up of just one starting senior Shanae Prevost, freshman Shelby Stanford, a few sopho-mores including Desiree Martell and Brittany Conradsen, and one talented eighth grader in Lexi Joslin.

Defensively, Conradsen leads the team with 86 total rebounds on the season and Prevost leads the team with 37 steals. The Lady Warriors are scrappy, and will go after the ball when given any opportunity.

Offensively, Martell averages 9.8 points per game, while Stanford aver-ages 9.7.

“We are small in numbers, but we have been small all season,” Savage head coach Staci Lange-Rice said of the team. “The girls have learned many things from being small, their decision making and teamwork have improved throughout the season. The girls have become aware of their placement and avoiding putting themselves in foul

trouble.”The Savage girls have been working

on perfecting their defensive game.“Any team can be a challenge,” Lange-

Rice said. “We must have our basketball minds and bodies ready to meet any team. We need to come out ready to play defense and play it well. We are quick and we need to use this to our advan-tage.”

After suffering losses in the District 2-C, Lange-Rice and her team are look-ing forward to playing the teams that were victorious over them before.

“We have played some close games and unfortunately did not come out on top,” Lange-Rice said. “Playing those teams again and adjusting our game will make for an interesting battle.”

The Lady Warriors are middle-ranked in the District 2-C, but the Savage girls know any team can do well in the tour-nament.

“The district tournament has been known to be anyone’s tournament,” Lange-Rice said. “Whoever shows up to play and wanting the game more, will come out on top.”

The Savage Warriors squad had to get back to the funda-mentals of basketball when the team prepared themselves for the District 2-C tournament.

“We are going back to the basics of defense and ball handling,” Savage’s head coach Rick Adsit said. “We have been making some mistakes in those areas over the course of the season and hopefully taking better care of the ball and step-ping up the defense will help us win some close games.”

The Warriors’ season began with some close games, and while they were a loss in the record books, the close scores showed a young team still learning how to play the game.

“We are, of course, still not as experienced as other teams in the conference,” Adsit said. “But with every game we again were learning things, whether it be about the game or the kids just learning about themselves as people and athletes.

“These challenges of age hopefully continue to help them grow as future leaders, but should not be and will not be what defines them as a team. We talked right before Christ-mas break about the age thing and have really not spoken of it again since. In growing this year as people, we have stopped trying to find excuses for every bad thing that has happened to us. If this is the only quality that they take from this season, we probably have won more than a basketball game.”

The Savage team remains a contender in the upcoming tournament. While its record may show a different side of the story, even high-seeded teams like Fairview or Culbert-son could fall to the Warriors if overlooked.

The Warriors are up for any challenge headed their way as they go into the district tourna-ment.

“As we get further in the sea-son, I think we are starting to enjoy playing this game a little more every time out,” Adsit

said. “Whoever we are sched-uled to play, we are looking forward to the chance to play and get better.”

Savage has been work-ing hard on its defense. The Warriors continue to try and

work on man defense with traditional help side defense doing its job as well. “Our play-ers are pretty knowledgeable about the other teams in the conference from playing them over the years or being off the

court friends so match-ups are never really hard to do to start the game,” Adsit said. “If we see something not working or someone having an off-night, we will switch things up pretty quickly.”
