Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh is constituted as 61st district of the state by G.O. No. 5-

5(4)/81/D-64/State-5 dated 5th June 1989.Firozabad district has good transportation links due

to National Highway 2 linking Delhi with Kolkata and Agra - Lucknow Express Way passing through

it as does the busy railway route from Delhi to Kolkata.Agra is 44 km away, Kanpur is 250 km

away, Delhi is 250 km away . Nearest Airport is in Agra. Nearest Railway station is in the center of

Firozabad and one in Tundla named as TundlaJunction.Firozabad is a district in the Uttar Pradesh

State of India. Total area of Firozabad is 2,362 km² including 2,343.99 km² rural area and 63.01

km² urban area. Firozabad has a population of 24, 98,156 peoples. The Firozabad district is further

divided in to Tehsils / Blocks / Community Development Blocks (C.D.Blocks) for administrative

purposes.

Firozabad is located at 27.15°N latitude and 78.42°E longitude. It has an average elevation of 164

metres (538 ft). Firozabad district was established in 1989. The height is above mean sea level

164.467 meter. The boundaries of district touch Etah district in north and Mainpuri and Etawah in

east. The Yamuna river makes its southern boundary. The area of district is about 0.8% of total

area of U.P. and population is 1.1% of total population of U.P. Aproximately 73.6% population is

living in rural area. It has severe winter and living in rural area. It has severe winter and summer

seasons. Mostly district is plane and its slope is from North West to south.

For administrative convenience and proper extension of development activities the district has

been further divided into five tehsils viz., Firozabad, Jasrana, Shikohabad, Tundla, and Sirsaganjand

2. Overview of Mining Activity in the District:

The district mining activity is poor as far as the mining potential is concerned. No mineral has ever

been reported in the district however prospecting is still on whereas new milestones are being

searched to boost the regional economy through the mining sector. Since the district belongs to

the North Indian Gangetic plain. Yamuna, Sirsa&Sengar rivers are flowing in the south of the

district. Mostly district is plane and its slope is from North West to South. The Yamuna river makes

its southern boundary. The total forest area in the district is 8,659 hectare.

5. Process of Deposition of Sediments in the Rivers of the District

River Yamuna is the main river of the district and its tributary i. e. river Sengar and river Arind

which become flooded and torrential during monsoon. The district is mostly covered by the

younger alluvial plains of the river Yamuna. These rivers plays pivotal role in the deposition of

sediments. It has been estimated that 1.27cm layer per day of river borne minerals get deposited

every year during the inundation caused by the major river.

6. General Profile of the district

Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh is constituted as 61st

district of the state by G.O. No. 5-

5(4)/81/D-64/State-5 dated 5th June 1989. The district is having subtropical climatic conditions

and because of neighboring state of Rajasthan, more often receives an annual dry spell. The

summer onset is quite earlier as compared to the winter. Firozabad district is well known for its

glass work. The district is not mineral rich and therefore mining sector can be considered as the

significant source of revenue generations however; local administration is continuously striving for

mineral prospecting to compensate within this sector. Firozabad district has good transportation

links due to National Highway 2 linking Delhi with Kolkata and Agra - Lucknow Express Way passing

through it as does the busy railway route from Delhi to Kolkata.Agra is 44 km away, Kanpur is

250 km away, Delhi is 250 km away. Nearest Airport is in Agra. Nearest Railway station is in the

center of Firozabad and one in Tundla named as Tundla Junction. Total area of Firozabad is 2,362

km² including 2,298.99 km² rural area and 63.01 km² urban area. Firozabad has a population of

24,96,761 peoples. The Firozabad district is further divided in to Tehsils / Blocks / Community

Development Blocks (C.D.Blocks) for administrative purposes.

Physiography of the district:

Firozabad district is well drained by the river Yamuna and its tributaries viz., River Sengar and River

Arind rendermost of the fertile patch to the district with the transference of the younger alluvium

and sandy loam.Due to proximity to Rajasthan the climate of Firozabad is very dry. Here summer

starts very early. The climate of the district is very extreme. The temperature of the district is

varies from 2º C in winter to 47º C in summer. The wet session normally starts in the early of July

month. The average rainfall is 751 mm. The winter months are virtually dry.

Geomorphology of the district:

Geomorphologically, the area is not fully matured. However, based on existing features the district

is divided into five units as follows.

I Flood Plain

II Younger Plain

III Older Alluvial Plain

IV Salt Encrustation

V Ravines

Soil Characteristics:

Soils of Firozabad are typical of those in the upper Gangetic alluvial plain. The diversity is mainly

due to the influence of various drainage, canals and partially due to the presence of Yamuna river.

The following are main soils.

I Bhur

II Matiyar

III Dumat

IV Pillia

The south-western stretch of the district is confined by river Yamuna and is covered by Behar or

ravines since the river flows through the winding channel.

The following geomorphological units have been delineated. Two main geomorphic units

identified in the district are:

DSR - Firozabad

Page | 12

1. Younger Alluvium Plain

2. Older Alluvium Plain

1 Younger Alluvium Plain: Younger alluvium plain is mainly restricted to present river course and

mainly represented by sand and loam. It is further divided into (a) Present flood plain and (b) Old

flood Plain. The present flood plain has two main land forms i.e. present river course and sand

plain sand bar. Similar the old flood plain is characterized by flowing land forms which are

represented by loamy sand. The land forms are:

i. Abandoned Channel

ii. Meandering Scar

iii. Black- swamp

2 Older Alluvium Plain: This unit is mainly characterized by yellow clay, kankar and Reh. It is

represented by following land forms.

i. Alluvium plain

ii. Salt affected plain

iii. Water logged plain

The maximum area of the district falls under these land forms.

13. Conclusion

Firozabad the 61st

District of the Indian State Uttar Pradesh has been created recently in 1989 and has

been included in the Agra Division. The district has historical importance and is one of the most agro-

economic based districts. Although the mineral potential is very low, the district contributes

significantly in the total revenue generation. Plenty of opportunity exists in the districts as the district

is well irrigated by the river Yamuna and its tributaries.
