Many teachers took advantage of the KySTE Outreach Grant Workshop held on October 12th. Jason Adkins reviewed the application and deconstructed rubric to assist attendees in writing their grants. Mr. Adkins is offering follow-up support to attendees by reviewing applications prior to submission. We anticipate several grant awards in OVEC districts, as in the past, due in part to Mrs. Adkins’ assistance. Dr. White continues to work with the new website vendor, SchoolPointe, to design the new OVEC website. The website should be up and running in November. Watch for the new design and easier interface to access information and resources, as well as register for OVEC events. The Instructional Technology and IT Networks met on September 24th. The Instructional Technology Network focused on summer professional learning resources, while the IT Network focused on LightSpeed implementation. The Instructional Technology and IT Networks will meet again on December 3rd. The Instructional Technology Network (9:00 AM-12:00 PM) will focus on Makerspaces. Library Media Specialists, Instructional Coaches, and Makerspace Mentors are encouraged to join the CIOs, TIS/TRTs, and one-to-one coaches attending this meeting. The IT Network meeting (1:00PM-3:00 PM) will focus on IT standards and best practices. All meetings are held at the OVEC offices at 100 Alpine Drive, Shelbyville. We look forward to meeting with the instructional and technical personnel in our member districts. Please contact Angie White, [email protected], for more information.

KDE NOVICE REDUCTION WORKSHOP FOR OVEC REGION

The Kentucky Department of Education will soon be hosting the first round of Novice Reduction workshops in several locations across the state. The purpose of these workshops is for district and school core leadership teams to learn more about the novice reduction process through a deep dive into processes and strategies that impact novice reduction and gap closure. Teams will learn effective and efficient ways to use KDE’s Novice Reduction webpage and will be allowed time to begin making novice reduction plans with support from Novice Reduction Coaches. The workshop will be held on November 13 (Friday) at the Oldham County Schools Administrative Annex, 1900 Button Lane, Lagrange, KY. The start and ending times will be announced later and sent to OVSO members. KDE will limit the number of attendees to 60 and it will be open to others outside of the OVEC region so we are sharing now so our OVEC districts can place this date on their calendar. Registration will be handled by KDE. For more information, contact Linda Rains, Novice Reduction Coordinator, [email protected] The OVEC contact is [email protected].

EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN SERVICES

Infinite Campus (Special Education) With the July 2015 roll out of the updated KY IEP and KY Conference Summary as well as the release of the new KY Evaluation, districts are requesting Infinite Campus (IC) support now more than ever. The ECS staff at OVEC are here to support districts through these changes. The OVEC ECS team has hired a Special Education Consultant with both classroom and application knowledge of IC to help provide districts with technical assistance and training. Directors and special education teachers, within the coop, are already taking advantage of her IC background by scheduling staff trainings and requesting technical assistance via phone and email. The OVEC region now has district representation on the Special Education Advisory Group for Infinite Campus (SEAGIC), as one of our local special education directors has joined the advisory group. SEAGIC, meets quarterly and is composed of members from the Kentucky Department of Education, special education representatives such as directors and placement specialist from across the state, and IC developers. The goal of SEAGIC is to improve the IC experience for all users as well as be a liaison between districts and the Kentucky Department of Education and IC. OVEC districts will receive updates at the monthly Directors of Special Education (DoSE) network meetings following the quarterly SEAGIC meeting. SEAGIC recently met during the month of September to discuss the most effective way to address some of the technical issues that have occurred with the July update and the timeline for those corrections. An update from that meeting will be provided at the October DoSE network meeting. For more information or assistance related to special education and Infinite Campus, contact Christel Bogar at [email protected] or 502-647-3533, ext. 218.

OVEC/PEBC (DENVER) PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES 2015-2016

Final preparations are being made as Shelby County Schools will once again be the lab host for the four day Thinking Strategies Institutes on November 17-20, 2015. There is a demand for this professional learning which guides teachers in gaining understanding of workshop, discourse, gradual release, and thinking practices. We appreciate the collaboration between Shelby County School District, PEBC, and OVEC to bring this top notch professional learning opportunity to our region. The Thinking Strategies cohort is comprised of representatives from Bullitt, Carrol, Franklin, Grant, Oldham, Shelby and Spencer Counties that meet several times a year to discuss effective implementation of the thinking strategies in their school district. The Thinking Strategies Cohort will meet on November 12, 2015 immediately following OVSO.

OVEC/JEFFERSON COUNTY/KSB LEADERSHIP CONTENT NETWORK FOR OCTOBER

Instructional Support Leadership Network (ISLN): The OVEC/Jefferson County/KSB ISLN will be held on October 20, 2015. The meeting will begin at 8:30 AM and end by 11:30 AM. The meeting is being held at the Oldham County Schools Art Center in Crestwood. As we work together during this meeting, and for the year, it is important to communicate the purpose of each meeting. It is to support capacity development of our district leadership teams to be able to support the Kentucky Academic Standards within the context of highly effective teaching, learning and assessment practices. The October ISLN main theme or Focus Question is: “What is good practice? How do you KNOW? The targets for this network and all our LCN networks include:

1. Use available and appropriate data to inform a cycle of continuous improvement. 2. Select/create assessments that yield reliable evidence for a given purpose. 3. Use established criteria, protocols, tools, resources with fidelity to gauge professional practice and

student learning. 4. Analyze structures and systems used by effective DLTs/PLCs—what is high quality!

Please bring your ISLN team, prepared to learn and be engaged in the work during our ISLN meeting on October 20th. We will also have opportunities for sharing across the region! Social Studies: For October, teacher leaders participating the Social Studies network in OVEC will be focusing on improving Inquires built during the September meeting, looking at the formative and summative assessment, and building rubrics for those assessments that will service teachers and students. On October 21st at the Oldham County Arts Center, we will focus on the following targets, which will be a continuation of the work started at the ISLN meeting.

Use established criteria, protocols, tools, resources with fidelity to gauge professional practice and student learning.

Select/create assessments that yield reliable evidence for a given purpose.

9

Use available and appropriate data to inform a cycle of continuous improvement

Analyze structures and systems used by effective DLTs/PLCs Participants will begin the day by focusing the day on standards with a “Making Meaning” protocol wherein participants begin to ask questions about the standards and derive big ideas and possible contexts through which the standards will be taught. Teacher will then revisit their Inquiry-Based Units and will use a feedback protocol to critique peers’ Inquiries based on the Equip-like Social Studies Rubric. Teachers will then focus in on formative and summative assessments within their Inquiries and will create rubrics that will reflect student proficiency. Finally, participants will reflect on how inquiry and rubric design support exemplary practices within the Framework for Teaching and align to CHETL. Teachers will have learned multiple protocols and processes that will help strengthen their PLCs and make them strong participants within their DLTs. For November’s meeting, we are asking teachers to plan a lesson using draft KASS standards that will use the rubrics created in October, so please encourage your teachers to complete these lessons. All information presented at the SSTLN can be found at http://ovecssnetwork.weebly.com/ Science: Our first ISLN meeting September 22 was at the Oldham County Arts Center and the STLN meeting was September 29 at the Administrative Annex in Oldham County. The theme was “How can Capacity for going deeper be developed and sustained? Since this is the final year of the networks we want to make the most of each meeting. We explored the value of capacity development as related to work of the District Leadership Teams (DLT’s)-and ultimately the sustainability of professional learning around standards, highly effective teaching, assessing and learning. I worked at Goshen Elementary in Oldham County several days in September as a resource for teachers as they implement the new NGSS aligned science curriculum in that county. Please contact me to work with individual teachers, teams, PLC’s or for any other support I might offer as teachers strive to fully implement the NGSS in your schools. In October our theme is “What is GOOD practice? How do you know? We will explore different types of data and its use it to inform and improve instruction. Please contact me for any support I might offer at [email protected].

OVEC/CKEC ALTERNATIVE PROGRAM PRINCIPALS/DIRECTORS NETWORK

For many years, OVEC has provided a network meeting for those overseeing Alternative Programs. Several years ago, Central Kentucky Educational Cooperative (CKEC) asked if they could partner with OVEC on this network and they have been playing a part since then. Subsequently, others from the Northern KY Coop have asked to attend the meetings too, so this valuable network has grown over the years, and continues to grow! Our second visit will be November 11th, from 9:30-12:00 noon in Fayette County. The Fayette County program will be The Stables. The Stables is a community partnership providing unique learning opportunities for students in grades 7-12 who thrive in a nontraditional school setting. Designed with opportunities with the academics in mind, it also provides opportunities to gain work competencies and vocational skills. Through Project-Based Learning and work experiences, students assume greater responsibility for their education and to be lifelong learners. The program is housed at Central Kentucky Riding for Hope at the Kentucky Horse Park. Rachel Baker is the Director of The Stables. To register for this meeting, please go to: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=vc5dkreab&oeidk=a07ebirasv2ddfce8e5 The 3rd meeting/visit will be in Anderson County on April 21, from 9:30 – 12:00 noon at the APEX Academy at Anderson County High School. Principal Steve Swank is looking forward to sharing the story of how Anderson County has overhauled their Phoenix Academy to become the APEX Program (Achieving Personal Excellence). To register for this meeting, please go to: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=vc5dkreab&oeidk=a07ebirdyzgcb17d8bc Please contact [email protected] if any questions.

CALIBRATING CONVERSATION

An additional training opportunity has been added for those participants who have been previously trained in the 6 days of Cognitive Coaching. Calibrating Conversations is one day seminar that shows coaches how to ask teachers to reflect on personal practice in the context of the KY Framework for Teaching and to assimilate it so that they can integrate the insights gained into their practice. Contact Tracey Harris, [email protected], if you have any questions. Please see the flyer on the following page for registration information.

Leading Educational Excellence

Cognitive Coaching Seminars Calibrating Conversation

Presented by Dr. Maggie McGatha

March 15, 2016 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

OVEC – 100 Alpine Drive – Shelbyville – KY – 40065

The purpose of a Calibrating Conversation is to engage teachers in assessing their own performance

related to a set of standards like the KY Framework for Teaching used in PGES. The goal is for teachers to share responsibility for self-assessing, and then self-prescribing personal responses to

the assessment rather than simply being recipients of an evaluation. Calibrating Conversations ask teachers to reflect on personal practice in the context of the KY Framework for Teaching and to

assimilate it so that they can integrate the insights gained into their practice (Costa, Garmstons, & Zimmerman, 2014). This seminar is critical for anyone who will be using the KY Framework for

Teaching with teachers (peer observers, coaches, administrators.)

Audience: The Calibrating Conversation Seminar is open to anyone who has completed days 1-4 of the Cognitive Coaching Foundation Seminar. Cost: OVEC Districts - $150.00 per person. Non-OVEC Districts - $200.00 per person. Registration fee includes lunch. Registration Deadline: February 26, 2016.
