As we begin June, teachers and students are busy completing end of year assessments and evaluations. Teachers are beginning to work on the report cards and organize the end of the year celebrations. There are many things that still need to be completed before we end another school year and we like to thank the parents for their on going sup- port. We are now finalizing our staffing for next year and working on the classroom organization and teacher placement. We plan to share the class organization and teacher placement in our summer newsletter. We appreciate your under- standing and patience. Special thanks to Mrs. Grant and Mrs. Gil- lespie for organizing our Jump Rope for Heart event we raised over $5400 for a great cause. It has been a great year at Princess Marga- ret Public School. We continue to celebrate all of our students successes and accomplishments. Congratulations to the School Council for an- other successful year. The Council worked hard to make Princess Margaret School a wel- coming place for all of our students. The Council provided input to the school to guide important deci- sions. The Council worked tirelessly to or- ganize and support spe- cial events and activities for students and families. The Council also sup- ported school and stu- dent programs finan- cially. The money raised throughout the year is redirected to the classrooms and the students. Once again this year, Parent Council will be supporting Graduation and they have allocated $5 for each student to make end of the year ac- tivities more affordable. Please consider joining the Parent Council next year. With the warmer weather upon us, the topic of appro-priate clothing has been raised. We have gone over the dress code with all of our students and continue to re-mind them of the guidelines. T-shirts should be free of inappropriate language or pictures. No see through or loose mesh tops. Tops need to either have

sleeves or straps that have a three finger thickness and they need to cover the mid-section/abdomen. Undergarments should not be exposed. Make sure shorts and skirts are an appropriate length to wear to school. (Standing with arms at your side the length of shorts and skirts should extend beyond your

fingertips) Hats and sunglasses are ap-propriate for recess time but are not to be worn inside the school. Please take the time to review these guidelines with your child(ren). We appreciate your support in maintaining our school dress code.

Stay Connected @ Our Library Please be sure that you have returned all library books by Thursday, June 7, 2012. It is important to get all books back as we start cataloguing our li-brary books. If a book is lost, there is a $7 replacement cost. If we find the book later, you will be refunded the charge. We prefer to have the book back, so keep looking!!

This summer, stay connected with our Library! Students have enjoyed many of the links through our Destiny home page such as Tumble-books, Bitstrips for Schools and Daniel Cook. You can also browse our catalog or recommend books! Log on to destiny.dsbn.edu.on.ca then choose Princess Margaret. You can also access our Li-

brary through our school website (dsbn.org then Schools and School Web-sites). Also, don't forget to visit the Public Library over the summer to keep up on some great reading!!

these standards. If our registration num-bers change during the summer or in September we may be re-organizing our Primary classes. We do not make changes without careful considera-tion. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

GRADUATION

June 26, 2012

The weather is warming up, the days are longer and there's more time to be outside doing all kinds of fun things! But if you're going to be out in the sun, especially on a hot day, you need to stay safe. Let's find out how. Even though the sun is hot, it does cool things. It keeps us warm. It makes flowers and plants row. It even gives us vitamin D so we can better absorb calcium into our bodies for strong bones. It does all these things by sending down light, which includes invisible ultraviolet (say: ul-trah-vye-uh-lit) rays. These are also called UV rays. Some ultraviolet rays pass through air and clouds and penetrate the skin. When your skin's been exposed to too many of these rays, you get what's known as a sunburn. Ouch! Some people get a sunburn faster than others because of their coloring. If you have blond or red hair, light-colored skin, and light-colored eyes, you'll tend to get a sunburn more quickly than someone with dark eyes and skin. That's because you have less melanin (say: meh-luh-nun). Melanin is a chemical in the skin that protects it from sun damage by reflecting and absorbing UV rays. People with darker skin have more melanin, but even if you have dark hair, dark eyes, or darker-toned skin, you can still get a sunburn. It will just take a little bit longer. Sunburns look bad and feel worse. They can cause blisters on your skin. They can keep you inside feeling sore when everyone else is outside having fun. They increase your chance of getting wrinkly when you get older. And worst of all, they can lead to skin cancer when you are an adult. Because getting wrinkles and getting sick don't happen right away, they can seem like things that could never happen to you. But you still need to be careful. You don't need to hide from the sun completely or wrap up like a mummy to protect yourself. But you should take these two steps: Always wear sunscreen. Take frequent breaks from the sun by going indoors or moving into the shade. These steps are especially important between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon, when the sun's rays are strong-est. Use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or higher. Put on sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before going out in the sun. The letters SPF stand for sun protection factor, and the number rating tells you how much longer you can stay in the sun with-out getting sunburned. But this isn't always true, so reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, just to be safe. Do this more of-ten if you've been swimming or sweating a lot — even if the sunscreen is waterproof. And remember that you can get sun-burned more quickly when you're swimming or boating because the reflection from the water intensifies the sun's rays. Be sure to put sunscreen all over your body. This includes some places you might not think of, like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, the part in your hair, your face, and the tops of your feet. You may need some help reaching the back of your body so ask your parents or friends to give you a hand. If you want to block the sun's rays, wear clothing that you can't see your hand through. You may still get burned through more sheer fabrics. Wear a baseball cap or other fun hat to block your face from the sun. Don't forget that your eyes need protection from ultraviolet rays, too. Always wear sunglasses in the bright sun, and make sure they have a label saying that they block UV rays

GRADUATION

SUMMER ACTIVITY BOOKS

Princess Margaret School will be making available a summer activity workbook called "Learning Advan-tage" later in the month of May 2012. "Learning Ad-vantage" is a fully coloured 192 page, activity book de-signed to reinforce and maintain Kindergarten to Grade 7 students' academic learning skills over the summer months. There is one 192 paged activity book per grade level from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 7.

All major units and 3 summer fun units in each book are aligned with the Ontario cur-riculum expectations. In addi-tion to the summer months, the books can be used all year long from September to the following June. All books have parent information pages, evaluation forms; follow up activities and a family focus. The cost of each book is $19.05 plus GST ($20 total). This is a savings of about $4 compared retail and online prices. You can visit

www.learningadvantage.ca to download a free unit of the book you would like to order for further review. An order form and infor-mation sheet with more details about the “Learning Advantage" program was sent home to all parents recently. Orders are due back to the school June 6th. The books ordered will be delivered to the school before the last week of school.

This is a change from our previously published date to avoid conflicts with Stamford’s Graduation and to accommodate some end of year activities. More details will be com-ing home with our Gradu-ates as the time ap-proaches. If you have any questions do not hesitate

to contact the office or your child’s teacher.

Princess Margaret School will be holding our annual Graduation ceremony on
