DO YOUR RESEARCH WHEN CHOOSING PRIVATE BUSING The U.S. Department of Transportation offers an easy way to review company information, safety record, inspection summary, and crash records.

Visit http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov and plug in the company’s Department of Transportation number or Company Name into the search field. The DOT number should be located on the side of the bus. If parents have trouble locating the number, they should ask the company to provide it.

ü Keep in mind that some companies may do business under a different name. The DOT number is the most reliable way to research.

ü Beware, some companies may change their names to hide lawsuits or accident records.

ü When in doubt about a company, be safe.

ü Any reluctance on the part of the company to provide the DOT number, the Vehicle Identification number, insurance information or driver history should be a red flag.

LOOK FOR POTENTIAL PROBLEMS Some private bus companies buy older buses that school districts have taken off the road. Do a visual inspection of the bus. You do not need to be a bus mechanic to spot some potential problems.

ü Does it look well maintained?

ü Are all the safety mirrors, lights and stop sign arm functional?

ü Are the tires properly inflated and have visible tread?

ü Walk the inside of the bus. Are the seats frayed, torn or coming loose from their bolts on the floor?

ü Are the emergency exits functional?

ü Is there a fire extinguisher located near the front of the vehicle?
