SAMASTIPUR DISTRICT PROFILE

Samastipur district is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar. Earlier a sub-division of the erstwhile Darbhanga district, Samastipur was

notified as a district on 14th November 1972. Samastipur is a part of Darbhanga division. Samastipur is bounded on the north and south by rivers Baghmati and

Ganges respectively and on the west and east by the districts of Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Begusarai and Khagaria respectively.

The rivers flowing through Samastipur district are Baghmati, Burhi Gandak, Baya, Kosi, Kamla, Kareh, Jhamwari and Balan. River Ganges skirts the district on the south.

INTRODUCTION

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

After a temporary period of instability, Darbhanga came under the realm of the Hindu chiefs of the Oinwara dynasty, also known as the Kameshwara Thakur dynasty or Sugauna Dynasty. Kameshwara Thakur, the founder of dynasty, was a resident of the village Oini, near Pusa Road, in the district of Darbhanga.

Under the Oinwaras, the region was left undisturbed by the Muslim conquerors. The period under Oinwara dynasty lasted from 1325 to 1525 AD.

The Oinwara dynasty actively encouraged learning and fine arts. The court served as the centre of Sanskrit belles-lettres and philosophy. Prominent scholars of the age such as Gadadhara, Sankara, Vachaspati Mishra, Vidyapati, Amartakara and Amiykara adorned the court.

When Hazi Shamsuddin Ilyas of Bengal divided Tirhut into two parts, the Oinwara Raja shifted his capital to Sugauna near Madhubani. The southern part of the district came under Hazi Ilyas and the northern part under the Oinwaras. The modern sub-division of Samastipur (originally Shamsuddinpur) was founded by Hazi Shamsuddin Ilyas of Bengal.

Samastipur town is the district headquarters of Samastipur district. Samastipur district comprises of 4 sub-divisions, namely Samastipur, Rosera,

Dalsinghsarai & Patori and 20 blocks.

Total no. of Gram Panchayats in Samastipur district: 380. Total no. of villages in Samastipur district: 1248.

Major population earns livelihood through agriculture and its allied agricultural activities. There is no forest area in Samastipur. Lotus flowers and a variety of fishes are grown in Chilwara Chaur in Morwara village.

This is a source of income and nutrition for the local populace. There are several industries and small-scale industries, which include two sugar factories,

one paper mill, one jute mill (Rameshwar Jute Mill). The district has an industrial estate at Samastipur. Food processing industry is a viable option to improve the economy of Samastipur .

There are several industries and small-scale industries in Samastipur district such as one jute mill, two sugar mills, one paper mill and railways factories. One sugar mill and paper mill have closed down, while the major sugar mill in Hasanpur is still running and meets the needs of the local people.

Samastipur is a major producer of potatoes, there are more than 20 cold storages in the district, all storing potatoes and having a capacity of 6,500,00 quintals.

The district has a good potential for food processing industry.

AGRICULTURE AND FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY

The land use around Samastipur is mainly agricultural as the district has very rich and fertile land.

Paddy, maize and wheat are the main crops. Cash crops grown are sugarcane, mustard, tobacco, chilli, potato and turmeric. Samastipur is a major producer of potatoes.

Litchi and mango fruits are grown in abundance. Different types of vegetables are grown here.

Shekhopur and Bakhri Buzurg are the best agricultural villages. Chandchourdih village produces the most vegetables while Manika village grows tobacco.

Other Industries

Rameshwar Jute Mill

This famous mill in Muktapur village of Samastipur district is the largest jute mill in Bihar.

The mill processes raw jute to produce jute products like jute cloth, jute bags, jute yarn and twine.

The mill has an annual production capacity of 20,000 metric tonnes of jute goods, with 5,420 spindles and 325 looms.

It provides employment to around 5000 people. There were two sugar factories in Samastipur, one in the town near Magardahi Ghat

and the second one in Hasanpur. Magardahi Ghat sugar mill has closed down. Railways wagon wheel factory.

EDUCATION Samastipur is known for reputed research institutes. Rajendra Agricultural University was

established in Pusa, Samastipur, on July 4, 1903 as the first ever Imperial Agricultural Institute in India. Pusa block is world famous and is named after Mr. Henry Phipps from USA who donated money to establish agricultural research institute. In 1934, after a major earthquake rocked Bihar and severely damage the Imperial Agricultural Institute building, it was shifted to the new Pusa campus in New Delhi which eventually became Indian Agricultural Research Institute. In 1970, the government of Bihar established Rajendra Agricultural University.

There is also a Central Tobacco Research Institute and Central Cane Research Institute at Samastipur district.

HERITAGE & TOURISM

Khudneshwar Sthan : Also known as Khudneswar Dham, it is a unique temple in village Morwa, demonstrating Hindu-Muslim unity. Inside this Hindu temple, near the Shiva Linga is the mausoleum of Khudno Bibi (Khudni Bibi Ka Makbara). Hindus as well as Muslims consider this place auspicious.

Thaneshwar temple: It is a famous temple situated in the heart of the city, the name being derived from Thana (police station) and Ishwar (God). It is a temple of Shiv, Ram, Ganesh, Hanuman, Shani and Kali. It is a popular marriage venue.

Vidyapati Nagar: Named after the most revered Maithili saint and poet Vidyapati, it is in Dalsinghsarai block on the bank of river Ganges. It is believed to be the place where the poet breathed his last in search of Lord Shiva. As the myth goes, Lord Shiva, in the guise of Ugna, the servant, served Vidyapati. When Vidyapati desired to breath his last on the bank of Ganga but was unable to reach there due to his failing health, river Ganga changed its course to reach Vidyapati. Vidyapati Baleshwar Sthan is a famous temple at Vidyapatinagar.

Narhan: It was the capital of Dronwar kingdom. This kingdom located beside Budhi Gandak river, had made many forts, temples and bridges, Ramgadh Durga Mandir being the most famous of them. There is also a magnificent old building of Narhan Estate.

Bhagwati Sthan: It is one of the oldest and liveliest Durga temple in Mannipur. There is an ancient temple of Durga in Kessopatti also.

Kumar Sangrahalay: It is one of the only two private museums in Bihar state. It is in Hasanpur village.
