Welcome to the start of a new year of service to our communities.

It was an honour to represent District 201N1 at the International

Convention in Fukuoka Japan, the challenges with the language was

soon overcome by the hospitality and friendship shown to us by the

residents of this beautiful city. I would like to thank PDG Alan and

Lions Lady Maureen for their support at the Convention

Thank you to all the Lions of District 201N1 who put their trust in me

and the Cabinet that I have selected to manage our district over the

next twelve months.

As you are aware my theme for this year is “Lions Carers for the

Community” this also includes our own Club Members, as we are all

part of our communities.

Our new International President Chancellor Bob Corlew announced

his theme of “New Mountains to Climb” at his inauguration at the

99th International Convention in Fukuoka Japan.

“Climbing a Mountain is used as a metaphor for many daily

situations people confront. It represents something that is difficult

and arduous and takes maximum effort to scale. But is only by

climbing those mountains that we ever excel. Each mountain

represents a new challenge, a new opportunity.

As our world continues to change, each of us face new challenges

and new opportunities to serve and each can be viewed as a

mountain. Climbing these mountains provides a chance for Lions to

make the world better.”

We commenced our Club visitation programme on the 4th July with

a visit to the Lions Club of Dorrigo Plateau, for their Changeover

night where I was asked to induct two new members, install their

new board and present a Melvin Jones Fellowship to incoming

President Lion Alan Jarrett.

That was followed on the 6th July with a visit to Kempsey Lions,

Region and Zone Chairs can provide practical assistance to clubs

experiencing Membership and Leadership problems…. Help is

only a Phone call away.

The Youth and Marketing Team Co-ordinator 2nd Vice Governor

that can provide useful avenues for clubs fundraising activities and

can provide interesting guest Speakers at meetings…... again they

also only a phone call away.

Your District Cabinet Officers are there to help you, please ask

them for help.

During IPDG Peter’s year he promoted the LCIF project “One Shot

One Life” a great project that needs our continued support. Lion

that project when we visit your club.

I am challenging all the clubs of the District, including the Lioness

Convention or at least by 7th June 2017.That is about $100.00 per

club the beard will come off, if the pool reaches $7000.00 then 2nd

VDG David Emanuel will donate his Moustache. The proceeds will

be split three ways between Children’s Cancer, Prostate Cancer

and Breast Cancer.

In closing I would like to congratulate all the Clubs New Boards for taking on their roles and facing the challenge of “NEW MOUNTAINS TO CLIMB”

The Follow YOUR DREAM

FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA

MUMS ! 4 " MUMS

The Follow Your Dream Foundation Australia was established as a charitable trust in July 2013 by Past International President Barry J Palmer AM to raise funds to support initiatives designed to improve the lives of disadvantaged women and children.

We are pleased to announce the launch of our MUMS ! 4 ! MUMS fundraiser commencing on July 1st and will run for a period of three months.

The foundation has a lready ass isted chi ldren with new computers and to attend an educational camp and in Echuca announced a !10,000 grant to assist with the funding of the birthing mother ’s project in PNG to provide safe and hygienic care for new mothers and their babies. Current appalling statistics are that five women die in childbirth every day in PNG and we can make a difference.

We are asking clubs to invite a woman in your community to participate in this project to raise funds for the foundation to allow us to provide grants for Lions programmes that benefit disadvantaged women and children.

Clubs will look outside their clubs for entrants which will help raise the profile of your club within the local community. Mums have their own fundraising teams and projects and your club can participate as much or as little in assisting your candidate with her fundraising efforts.

Clubs can have more than one entrant.

Winners will be judged on total funds raised and deposited with the Foundation prior to each final judgement with the winners at District, State and National levels receiving gifts and prizes.

Promotional materials will be available for participating clubs.

To register your participation complete an application form on our website www.tfydfa.com.auor contact me on [email protected].

Please help us make a difference to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

Yours sincerely,

Carlene King PDG Carlene King OAM

LIONS CLUB OF COFFS HARBOUR

CHRISTIAN’S WALKER

Co#s Harbour Lions Club joined members of the Cerebral Palsy Organisation and local Bayldon Central School teachers to present Christian Sheridan with his Buddy Roamer Walker. As soon as the Walker was fitted, Christian was out of the c lassroom and navigated himself into the playground. He was happy to move around so freely.

With funds raised from a local bush dance last year Co#s Harbour Lions Club was proud to make the full donation for this Walker. Happy Mum Jess thanked members of the Lions Club for their generous donation.

This is Christian’s second walker donated by Lions Club members. This new Walker is expected to last 5 to 10 years depending on Christian’s growth pattern. The Buddy Roamer Walker has an adjustable vertical shaft which copes with the growth of the child.

We are sure that Christian will be able to have a more active and pleasurable life with his new Walker. PDG Peter Veryard

Lionsonoz in Action

While Travelling to Moree to join up with the Lions Vanners to wend their way to Echuca last month, Lionsonoz President Lion Ted Pickwell and Lion Hazel called in on Lions Kel and Yvie Kearns at Woolgoolga and took delivery of a vast amount of baby jackets, jumpers and beanies especially knitted by the Lionsonoz ladies for premature babies.

This is an ongoing project undertaken by the ladies, which helps to fill in the time between towns on their travels and also is a very worthwhile project as well. This batch was presented to the Moree Hospital Obstetrics ward by Lion Hazel and the matron there was very pleased to receive them. This latest issue should keep the Moree hospital in premature baby’s clothes for many months to come.

Australian Lionsonoz does not have an Activities account, nor does it conduct fund raising projects so the knitting project allows the members to participate in voluntary work while travelling all over this great land of ours.

Anyone who would like to participate in the Australian Lionsonoz program would be very welcome and for more details they could contact Lionsonoz Lion Yvie on 0427 497 660. Lion Warren White.

Lions Secretary Doug Durrant welcomed all Lions & Guests to the 39th Year of the Lions Club of Werris Creek and thanked everyone for their attendance.

In the past 12 months, Werris Creek Lions have been busy working in the community catering for the for Carols by Candlelight & Australia Day Celebrations at David Taylor Park, with gum boot, egg toss and broom toss being competed in the afternoon and Fireworks to end a great Australia Day. Our disbursements for the year to various Lions foundations and Community groups totalled over $7,232,

and organisations. St Vincent De Paul, Catholic Women League, Canteen Lady and member of the

Magpies Rugby Club just to name a few.

The Werris Creek Lions Club currently has 15 members who have done many hours working in the community and supporting many people in the district, national & international making the world we live in a better place. 1st Vice District Governor John Davis officiated the induction of the new board and enjoyed his visit back to the club that he was a member of some 13 years ago. Sandra expressed that it has been a difficult year and had to push herself to keep going. Sandra was honoured to be the First Female President for the Lions Club of Quirindi for 2015-2016.

In the past 12 months, Quirindi Lions have been busy working in the community catering for the Camp Quality bike ride BBQ, Health Wise—Prostate Cancer BBQ, Lynden Clearance Sale, Craigie Lee Clearance Sale, Council Fun day for Youth Week BBQ, Canter Fun Run BBQ, Heritage Village Rally & Swap Meeting Weekend Catering & Windamere Clearance Sale. In September we were able to send 2 local children to Kids to the Coast at Camp Elim who thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Sandra thanked her Secretary Judy Moyer, Treasurer Ken Aitken & Youth of The Year Chairman Beryl Mannion for the wonderful job they did to make sure everything run smoothly. Sandra also thanked all the Lions Lady’s and members for the great effort throughout the year. Sandra wished Ken Aitken and the incoming Board all the very best for the coming year. Our disbursements for the year to various Lions foundations and Community groups totalled over $7600, which is an amazing amount for our little club and our plans for 2016-2017 are even bigger.

The Highlight of the night was the presentation of Life Membership to Ronald Robinson by 1st Vice District Governor Elect John Davis, for Ron’s Tireless work in the Community. Ron or Robbo to all who meet him, joined Lions Club of Quirindi on 5 June 1969. This is Ron’s 46 year of Service to our Nation, State and local Community and the Lions Club of Quirindi. Ron has always been an advocate for aiding the disadvantaged and loyal to his customers. Ron would always run extra meat to our various Functions after hours and would often be seen making more snags or slicing more steak for one of the many BBQ’s held.

The Community Service Award was presented to Cedric Grayson by 2nd Vice District Governor Elect David Emanuel, for the countless man hours given to many Community groups in Quirindi. Cedric has been a teacher for 40 years and is still a casual teacher at Quirindi High School. Cedric has also been involved with the Heritage Village for the past 20 years, coaching numerous sporting teams and assisting the disabled in the community.

The Quirindi Lions Club, which has been making a difference to Quirindi and District for the past 49 years, currently has 15 members who have done over 1100 hours. “There’s so much to do and so we’re always looking for more help, and helpers,” “Whether you’re someone who like to roll their sleeves up and get physical, or you’ve only got a small amount of time to help out, we’d love to hear from you.” “It’s a wonderfully rewarding way of getting involved in our community, and making the world we live in a better place.”

Jindaboonda Postie Trek. A Community Success Story.

The everyday miracles performed by ordinary people. This describes the Je#ers family as they planned and executed The Postie Bike Trek in honour of the life of Jindaboonda. Jindaboonda %Dennis Je#ers&, a local of Hallidays Point died on January 30 2015 after a short fight with Pancreatic Cancer.

The planned Postie Bike Trek was staged from May 3 to May 12 covering over 3,000 km from Hallidays Point to Cameron Corner and return. However wet weather prevented us riding to Cameron Corner. On reaching Bourke we were forced to go north, this gave us other opportunities like being entertained for dinner by the wonderfully generous Lions Club of Roma. In March The Je#ers Family invited Hallidays Point Lions to help shave years off Cancer Research. What happened is a remarkable Journey. Firstly, the Fund raiser at the Surf Club, secondly, the 3,000 km Postie Bike Trek.It is this trip, that sensationally impacted on many lives and had outcomes not imagined. Certainly a very big bucket of money containing !54,000 was donated to The Australian Cancer Research Foundation.

What could be more inspirational of human endeavor then watching Jindaboonda's wife Kim arriving home, in the dark on her Postie Bike, at the completion of the 10 day trek. The Postie Trek was the brain child of family member Daniel Kranz: to have an event in which funds went to the microscope for cancer research. In this case The Australian Cancer Research Foundation. The result exceeded all expectations. Family, friends, community members, businesses and Lions gave generously. Daniel had no previous experience in organizing such an event. In additional no costs were taken from donated money. The 25 riders and 25 support people paid their own way.

Hallidays Point Lions task was to request clubs along the way provide Lunch. The fact is many went far and above this. Allow me to tell you the story of Nyngan Lions Club. Let me say Nyngan Lions illustrates what happened regularly as clubs stood up and supplied lunches, dinners and or donations. Emails were sent and more emails, gradually responses trickled in. No email responses from Nyngan, I tried a phone call, President Delma answered the phone. Delma does not bother to much with emails. I attempted to give some background. Delma remarked it was short notice and she was busy most days with meals on wheels, helping the elderly ...the list went on. She did mention in all this she was over 75! I sheepishly mentioned that it was this coming Thursday. "Oh love that is fine that's the one day l have vacant. You must realise we only have 4 members here, one works !om her walker " I immediately said that my wife Vicki and Lion Noel would get there early and help and we would pay half. The short response was, "no if I say we can do it we wi", we regularly supply food for a" sort of people passing through on fund raisers. We recently supplied 100 Black Dogs with baked dinners, so they don't get sick of the same type of food”.

On arrival in the Main Street there they all were ready to go, in arguably one of the nicest parks seen…..anywhere

Some 40 minutes later the Postie Bikes buzzed up the street. The meal comprised inch thick Scotch Fillet steak, %Delma did whisper to my wife Vicki not to tell the treasurer who was the cook&and big enough to cover the plate including salads. Absolutely beautiful.

Jindaboonda Postie Trek. A Community Success Story Cont.

Throughout the journey, the trek received a lot of local media attention, Daniel did articles and interviews with the Western Star, My Gunnedah and North West News, as well as interviews on Outback Radio, and 2WEB Cunnamulla spreading word of our adventure and raising awareness for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. Throughout the journey, we obtained a lot of local media attention, with articles in the Western Star, My Gunnedah and North West News, as well as interviews on Outback Radio, and 2WEB Cunnamulla spreading word of our adventure and raising awareness for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. Through this media coverage alone, we reached a potential audience of over 100,000. This could not have been achieved without the assistance of the Lions Clubs, and the generosity of the small businesses that helped us along the way. Lion Clubs were in the process of reporting in “the local”.

Thanks to the following Lions Clubs for their wonderful hospitality, support and friendship Tamworth, Nyngan, Coonamble, Coonabarabran, Walcha, Uralla, Guyra, Peel Valley Tamworth, Gloucester, Bourke, Roma, Goondiwindi, St. George and Bourke. All Clubs did what they could and should be very proud of their achievement. This is particularly so as a number of clubs appear to have no choice but to close down. I wonder if the Lions family should be doing more!

The Trek, was a great promotional example: What Lions Do. There is no better example of the practical display of The Family of Lions. Which begs the question why don’t we use this strategy? The success of this amazing fund raiser was the partnership developed between the Je#ers family, the local Community, Hallidays Point Lions and the vision and energy of Vice President Deb Schmitzer. When Lions work with and know their community, share a common focus and develop friendship success is assured. Lionsonoz in Action

La st Fr iday, L ionsonoz member, Lion Trish Hyett assisted husband Lion Syd, a member of Ingleburn Lions Club at their Club’s project at the the NSW Har ness Racing Club meeting held at Menangle Park and to cheer on charity pacer, Abettorrose.

Abettorrose regularly races for charities and community groups, who receive !2,500 for a w in , and , i f unsuccessful, the chosen char i ty s t i l l receives'!250 just for a start! At this meeting she was running for the benefit of the Ingleburn Lions Club. Because Aust ra l i an Lionsonoz do not conduct any money raising projects, their members assist the “Main Stream” lions Clubs in their projects and that was what Lion Trish was doing on the day.

This beautiful horse trotted bravely for Ingleburns Lions Club, proudly leading for most of the race, but the last couple of hundred meters proved just too much for this fearsome filly. PDG Lion Warren White
