Data Services, a joint venture between DST and State Street Bank. One wonders how his schedule allows time for community service.

Tom’s commitment to the community spans many years. He served the Central City School Fund Board for 12 years, five of these as its chairman. Other past service include the Missouri Easter Seals Society Board of Directors and Treasurer, St. Thomas More school board, Bishop Hogan High School Finance Committee, the American Cancer Society and the Kansas City Tomorrow and Centurions. Currently, Tom serves on the Financial Council for the Kansas City, Missouri Catholic Diocese, is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Rockhurst University, sits on the Board of Trustees for Avila University, serves as a director at Carondelet Health and Rockhurst University Continuing Education Corp.

Scouting remains high on Tom’s list of current affiliations. He currently serves the Heart of America Council on its Executive Committee and is Vice President of Endowment. Under Tom’s leadership, the endowment has grown to over $20 million in current and deferred gifts, ensuring the longevity of

Scouting values for future generations of young men in Heart of America Council.

For his work to support the council, Tom has received its highest volunteer recognition, the Silver Beaver award.

Tom and his wife Sharon also believe in the ben-efits of quality summer time programs for young people. During the “Keeping Our Promise” capital campaign, they financed the cost of the Pirate Ship Aquatic Park theme area at Cub World. Cub World is located at Camp Theodore Naish Scout Reservation located near Bonner Springs, Kansas. This program enhancement ensures that thousands of Cub Scouts each year will have a safe environment to enjoy the cooling effect of summer swimming while learning aquatic skills and safety.

The event raised more than $395,000 to support the Urban Scouting program of the Heart of America Council. The Urban Scouting program serves 5,141 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers in the Urban Core of Kansas City and an additional 5,133 Learn-ing for Life participants. Through the Urban Scouting program, young people grow in citizenship, physical fitness and life skills as they prepare for adulthood.

Welcome New Leaders The “Den Leaders First Month” is designed to take the guesswork out of organizing a den for a new den leader. You know how important first impres-sions are and Cub Scouting is no different. Boys join Cub Scouting for excitement, to be with friends, and to have fun. Fun den meetings will help ensure that good first impression. By following the plans outlined in this kit, new den leaders will be able to conduct fun and exciting den meetings and Scouts will come back for more!

The first thing new den leaders should know is that you’re not alone. Hundreds of thousands of adults have preceded you in volunteering. Their experience and wisdom are available through a num-ber of resources that are outlined in this kit. As a new den leader, you won’t have to “re-invent the wheel” as you plan and prepare for meetings. You should have received your “Den Leaders First Month” at your School Night meeting. This is available online at www.hoac-bsa.org.

Please provide these resources to your new Den Leaders and encourage them to attend local training offered each weekend in late August and September.

Jewish Boy Scout Religious Awards Forming

The Jewish Committee on Scout-ing is now forming community-wide classes for the various Jewish Boy Scout Religious Awards. Classes are open to all Jewish Scouts in the com-munity regardless of their troop/pack affiliation.

Classes for the Ner Tamid Award (Boy Scouts in grades six – nine) and Etz Chaim Award (Boy Scouts ages 14-17) will begin in August. Classes for the Maccabee Award (Tiger Cub/Cub Scouts, grades one – three) and Aleph Award (Cub Scouts/Webelos, grades three – five) will begin in December.

All Scouts completing the classes will be invited to participate in the community-wide Jewish Religious Award Recognition Ceremony sched-uled for March 11, 2007.

To reserve a place in one of the Jewish Boy Scout Religious Award classes, or for additional information on starting dates and time, contact Norman Kahn, JCS chairman, 913-341-4792 or at [email protected].

God and Country Class Forming

Come one, come all to the God and Country Program this fall. There will be three locations: North Location is in Gladstone at North Cross United Methodist Church, the South Location is in Prairie Village at Cherokee Christian Church, 75th and Belinder and the Southwest Loca-tion is in Olathe at the First Baptist Church at 151st and Murlen.

Program dates begin:

Cherokee Christian – September 10th

First Baptist – September 17th

North Cross United Methodist – TBA

God and Country is a program offered for all youth, boys and girls, from any youth organization – Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire, 4-H or any church group. This is a church award, which the youth serving organizations honor and recognize on their uniforms and in their orga-nizations. Materials are writ-ten by P. R. A. Y. in St. Louis and have the endorsement from church bodies.

We will be offering each of the four levels at each site. God and Me for those youth in grades 1-3, in which we begin a conversation about how God relates in the life of a young person. We play games and make a GAME Box (God and Me Exploring) for our learning time. God and Family for grades 4-6, offers a time to under-stand how our Family is important and how the pieces come together to make a whole. They share in making pizza for the learning time and then share in pizza at the conclusion of the class. God and Church, grades 6-8 is a time to explore one’s own church and the history involved in both the denomination and the local congregation. Youth will build a photo journal or album in order to watch their journey begin. And finally, God and Life for those youth in grades 9-12, is time to put into place all that the youth have learned and be launched in the world, to go and serve.

There is a Four-Star Award which is being given to those youth who complete all four programs. This is a new award and I would encourage all youth to consider earning this award.

If you have taught any of the programs in the past and would be inter-ested in teaching this year, please contact Cindy Cone – 816-694-5151 for either Scout program or Jeff Cook – 816-468-9232 for the North program. There is a training time for new instructors, but we are look-ing for others to help in this time.

Registration is not required, but requested. Please send an e-mail to Cindy Cone at [email protected] for the South Pro-grams and Jeff Cook at [email protected] to sign up for any program.

Cubs in Hollywood

Over the past two months, many of our districts have offered camping opportunities in local parks to Cub Scouts in grades 1 through 5. This exiting 5 day program, showcases our Cub Scout program in the local community. Accolades go out to the many volunteers that made this year's day camps such a success. It is the volunteers, who share of their time that allowed over 3,546 young people to enjoy these programs

Take a few minutes to view the pictures included on this page to get an idea of the activities and fun experiences our Cub Scouts had this summer. Activities include Sling Shots, Archery, Fishing, Leatherwork, Relays, Face Painting, National Guard Education, Guest Speakers and fun.

This gathering will most cer-tainly be a fun time for one and all. Classes will include: Fun With Ropes and Knots, Women in Scouting, Leave No Trace Camping, Religion in BSA, Flag Etiquette and many more,

Military Program Opportunity

Below is a letter from an Eagle Scout offering to assist your units with program needs.

My name is Richard Gantz and I am a recruiter for the U.S. Army in Lawrence, KS. I had my court of honor for my Eagle Rank between my Army Basic Training and shipping out to Germany. I entered the Army in 1986 and spent 5 1/2 years in Germany. I returned to the United States in 1991 and was stationed at Fort Riley, KS until I finished my term of service in 1993. I spent my next 13 years working in the Rent-To-Own business. Then I saw an ad in the paper for civilian Army recruiters. I saw this as an opportunity to serve my country again while helping young men and women enter the Army so they can serve this GREAT COUNTRY of ours!

The Boy Scouts helped me realize the impor-tance of protecting the freedoms we have. So many parts of the Scout Oath and Law guided me on serving my COUNTRY.

If you would like for me to come out to one of your troop meetings and discuss the Army and the many benefits the Army has, you can call me toll free at 1-877-571-4241 or send me an e-mail at [email protected]

If you are out of my area I will link you up with a recruiter in your area.

Thank you for your time and leadership in showing and teaching our young Americans about Values and Ethic’s that our Country was built on.

Richard L. Gantz, U.S. Army, MPRI

PROGRAM/ CAMPINGAdventures in Scouting August/September 2006 • 9

Online advancement entry is here! The Heart of America Council is excited to announce that units can now use Internet Advancement to record their youth member advancements from any online location—at home or at the office. You will find this new method to be easy, convenient, and accurate because your unit enters the information.

Here’s how it works:

The Heart of America Council has an Internet Advancement page on our Web site (www.hoac-bsa.org) with instructions and a link to this new functionality. Internet Advancement makes it easy for unit leadership to record awards, ranks, and merit badges to youth via an online process.

New in August, we will be enhancing Internet Advancement with sev-eral new features. The two major enhancements are:

• The ability to upload advancement data from management software, such as Packmaster / Troopmaster

• The ability to record additional advancements in the Cub Scouting program, including Webelos activity badges

At any time during the year, the unit advancement processor from each active unit will be able to record advancements to youth member records. And, they’ll also be able to print a unit roster at any time. The roster is the most current information from ScoutNET, and it will include the person ID for each adult and youth member.

These are other reports available from Internet Advancement.

• Unit Advancement Summary shows ranks, merit badges, and awards saved in each person record for current members of the unit.

• Advancement Report lists each youth member that has new ranks, merit badges, and awards, if any. This is the official unit Advancement Report to be signed and submitted to the Scout Shop.

• Unit Awards Summary lists the number of new ranks, merit badges, and awards by name as a shopping list.

• Advancement Update Summary lists any ranks, merit badges, and awards that were already in the member record and were updated online.

What a great tool to save your unit time in recording your Scouts advancements. This will ensure that accurate records are available when he goes to fill out that Eagle Application. If you have questions, please feel free to call the Heart of America Council and visit with our program depart-ment. Login codes where mailed to your units. If you have misplaced your login information, please call the department mentioned above. For more information about Internet Advancement visit www.hoac-bsa.org.

You Made a Difference

The Twin Rivers District Cub Scout Day Camp held June 5th thru 8th, 2006 at North Lake Park in Garnett Kansas was a HUGE suc-cess. The success was due, in no small part, to all those who helped out. The amount of support was overwhelming. Youth staff, walk-ing leaders, den and pack leaders, day camp staff, volunteers, and par-ents donated countless man-hours to help assure that the Cubs had a great time!

Everyone, regardless of how they helped made a difference. There can be no question that the Day Camp could not have been the success it was without the efforts of each and every volunteer working in concert together like a well oiled machine as they did. You are all heroes in the eyes of the Cubs!

Special thanks to everyone who played a role in making this year’s Day Camp a smashing success. We hope to see you next year!

School Night for Scouting

It is never too early to start plan-ning your units recruitment for this coming fall. While we focus on Cub Scout recruiting in the Fall, ALL UNITS are invited to join us at the United Methodist Church, Paola, 7:30 p.m., for information to help your unit recruit and retain new boys and leaders. It is impor-tant that at least one person from your unit attend this information session and kickoff. You will learn of the new and exciting changes to the recruiting plan.

Back to the Pack

One of the key components to the new School Night to Join Scouting

program is that each Cub Scout Pack needs to have a “Back to the Pack” activity in early August for all of it’s “old” members. This event can be as simple as a picnic, pool party, etc. The concept is simple: Invite all of your returning boys and their families to a meeting or event in August to get re-energized for upcoming fall. This helps identify any leadership voids you have in your pack, so your pack and the district membership committee are prepared to recruit any new leaders at your School Join Scout Night meeting.

Join Scout Night On August 8, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at Christ Church (91st & Nall), Trailhead District will be holding the District-wide School Night to Join Scouting Kick-off meeting. It is very important that every Cub Scout Pack’s member-ship chairman be in attendance. At this meeting, your pack will receive the orientation on how the new fall recruitment program works, and what your important responsibilities are to making it a success. If you have any questions, please contact Rob Wheeler at (816) 941-8317.

Cub Scout Family Campout

All first, second, and third grade boys are invited to attend the Trailhead District’s Second Annual Cub Scout Family Campout on Friday, Septem-ber 29 - Saturday, September 30. The overnight camping experience will be held at Camp Ernst (180th & Kenneth Rd.) Families should plan to arrive at 6:30 p.m. and the campout will end about 11:00 a.m. Make sure to bring a tent and your camping gear. Activities will include family games, campfire program, evening snack, breakfast, and much more! Cost is $7.00 per fam-ily member. This campout is a great opportunity to get all of your newly signed up boys on an overnight experi-ence just a couple weeks after joining Scouting. For questions, please con-tact Dave Gurwell at (816) 591-4316 or Matt Specht at (816) 569-4966.

Fall Camporee Get ready for some Medieval Mad-ness! On October 13-15, 2006, the Trailhead District Fall Camporee will be held at Louisburg Park, Louisburg, KS. This activity is for all Webelos, Boy Scouts, and Venturers. Webelos are invited to attend only on October 14-15 and must have a parent and a host troop to camp with in order to stay the evening. Information packets can be found on the district activities web

page at www.hoac-bsa.org/Thactivi-ties.cfm. For questions, please contact Mike Flanagan at (913) 568-2971.

“Cubs in Hollywood”, 2006 Cub Day Camp was Outstanding!

During the week of June 19th, the district held day camp at Lake Olathe for 465 boys who had a great time. The theme this year was Cubs in Hol-lywood and the boys learned about the golden era of film making. Cubs participated in numerous activities like fishing, hiking, slingshots, archery, BBs, cooking, leatherwork, obstacle courses and more. The Olathe Fire Department visited camp and cooled off all the boys. Also on Thursday evening Family Night was held and the Scouts had an opportunity to show mom and dad all the fun of camp and enjoy a Scouting campfire.

Day Camp would not be possible

for the boys without all the hard work of many folks. Thank you to all the den chiefs, walking leaders, junior staff, staff, and special guests. Lastly a huge thanks to this year’s key staff that ensured we had a terrific camp and kept all of us on task.

Roundtable

The Roundtable meeting will be held at the Clinton Scout Cen-ter, on Tuesday September the 5th. Roundtable meetings are a gather-ing of Scouters from the Lone Bear District held once a month. These Meetings are an important way for leaders to gather and learn from each other. This is also an opportu-nity for you to get information on variety of subjects from the Heart of America Council and the Lone Bear District. Each month there will be a new program for both Boy Scout Leaders and Cub Scout Leaders.

We always have a good time and it would benefit your unit to have at least one adult leader present. All leaders are encouraged to join us and learn more about serving today’s youth. We are sure that you will take away some valuable infor-mation. For more information con-tact David Riker @ 660-238-2325

Both locations will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and end by noon on Saturday. Please plan on attending this event. For more information, please contact David Riker at 660-238-2325

Basic Leader Training

The Lone Bear District strives to run the best Scouting program pos-sible for our boys. A very important aspect of running a good program is having trained leaders. This fall there will be many opportunities for all of our leaders to get the necessary training. This will be particularly important for those leaders who have just begun their exciting Scouting adventure. For more information contact Mike Wiltfong @ 660-885-6914.

Training

With the fall season comes countless opportunities for leaders to attend training. Have your lead-ers been trained? Do they know the ins and outs of the program they are providing to the youth in your unit? Has every leader been through Youth Protection training? Please refer to the council web site, www.hoac-bsa.org/betraining.cfm, for specifics on the fall training courses and watch for flyers at Roundtable and in the mail. For specific ques-tions on each of the training, please call the following volunteers: Boy Scout: Steve Johnson (816) 517-9733, Cub Scouts: Karen Burgess (816) 228-6911, Venturing: Sue Grote (816) 229-1120.

Popcorn

Last year over $50,000 was earned by Blue Elk units just for selling popcorn. Don’t miss your chance to get a cut of that money. Think of all of the camp dues, or program supplies, or rank advance-ment that can be purchased with all

of this free money your unit could receive. Just sign up your unit by calling Dewey Barr at (816) 942-9333.

Camporee

This year’s Blue Elk Fall Camp-oree will take place October 20th-22nd at the American Legion Farm in Blue Springs, Missouri. Look for details at Roundtable or go the www.hoac-bsa.org/beactivities.cfm for the Camporee Guide. Question? Contact Vince Baretto, Camporee Chair, at 816-228-2556. You can sign your unit up to attend at Round-table. One change in the program this year is there will be no Cub Scout program. Please see informa-tion for Fall Family Campout if you are interested in an overnight event for your Cub Scouts.

Fall Family Campout “Cub Overnight”

Get ready for the Blue Elk District’s 2nd Annual Fall Family Campout to be held at the Ameri-can Legion Farm in Blue Springs, Missouri. We have a great program

planned for all registered Cub Scout aged boys and any family members they would like to have join them. Cost for the event is $7 per person. For more information please con-tact Marie Benz at (816) 373-4392 or Dewey Barr at (816) 942-9333.

Cub Scout Day Camp This year, Cub World was filled with nearly 400 boys who came to enjoy their fill of Archery, BB Guns, and the Water Park. Thank you to John Burris, our 2006 Day Camp Direc-tor, and our Program Director Beverly Becker of Pioneer Trails. Our two districts were able to pull together and give these boys a positive Day Camp experience. A sincere thanks goes to the rest of the Day Camp volunteers for their time, planning, and hard work. A thank you is also extended to our youth staff from both districts who came for-ward and took on leadership roles in an effort to make Day Camp a memorable experience.

Roundtable Roundtable for August will be at Rehms Park Southern Baptist Church at 7:00 p.m.. We look forward to see-ing you there.

Popcorn Has your unit planned on how to pay for next years program? How much is it going to cost? There is a way that you can pay for your entire years pro-

gram with no out of pocket cost to your parents. Sound good? Then Trail’s End Popcorn is for you! Why sell popcorn? Here are 10 reasons why…

1. Pay for your whole years Scouting Program with just one popcorn sale.

2. Cover all your Units activities and supplies with the commission you get from popcorn sales.

3. Get more parents excited by elimi-nating their out of pocket expenses.

4. Save time by managing the sale online--no paperwork.

5. Increase your Council and Unit income--70% stays local.

6. Boost a boys future. Scouts can qualify for Trail’s End Scholarships for college or other post high school edu-cation by selling popcorn. Call Dusty Boatright, Khary Floyd or Charles Vonderheid for more information

7. Attend the next Jamboree and have it paid for.

8. Teach boys how great it feels to earn their own way.

9. Help your Scouts strike gold. Top sellers can win great prizes from the

National Trail’s End Prize Program. Contact Dusty Boatright, Khary Floyd or Charles Vonderheid for informa-tion.

10. Plan your entire year, budget all costs, and raise the money you need in the fall.

You can raise all the money you need to fund your program for the coming year. Set a goal and divide by the number of selling Scouts and you are half way there! The next step is to sell and collect the money. That’s it!! We will be happy to help set up your sale and help you set a goal. Contact Khary Floyd @ (816) 569-4965 if you have any questions.

Fall Roundup

This year, the district will set the Roundup date and the District Roundup Committee will run this year’s School Night for Scouting. Kaw District is assembling a team of volunteers to organize and conduct a Roundup at each elementary school in the district. These coordinators and organizers will work at each elementary school to con-duct a School Night for Scouting by recruiting adults and signing up youth. The district school night team has put together a pencil draft of the dates for each school corporation and elemen-tary school. We will review the dates and implementation of this plan with

you at the August 10th training which will be at St. Martins Lutheran Church on Hwy 7 and Hollingsworth Road at 7:00 p.m.. We still have a few open-ings left on the district school night team. If you’re interested, contact Charles Vonderheid @ (816) 569-4949, Dusty Boatright @ (816) 569-4967, or Khary Floyd @ (816) 569-4965.

2006 Fall Camporee

Fall Camporee for Kaw District will be on October 27th – 29th (Fri. - Sun..) in Cub World at Camp Naish. Come join us for camping, cooking, first-aid, rope skills, fire building, water safety, field sports, camp fire skits and more! Contact Tim Saint @ (913) 334.4863 or Steve Wyckoff @ (913) 788.9302 for more information.

Day Camp Day Camp went extremely well this year. We ended up having 315 youth attend this year, which is one more than the previous year. The boys enjoyed participating in activities such as mud volleyball, archery, bb guns, obstacle courses and much more. We need to send a special thank you out to Nico-lette Bennett (day camp director) and Rod Zinn (program director) for every-thing they did to help put this year's camp together. These two individuals put in numerous long hours to make this year's camp the best it could be!! Thank you to all the staff and walking leaders that also took time out of their busy schedules to put all the programs and activities on.

Program Planning Fair The Program Planning fair took place at the June roundtable. If you didn’t attend, you missed out on impor-tant information that could have made your Troop or Pack even better. The tables that were set up at this year’s program fair included: training, activi-ties, popcorn, camping, venturing, finance, advancement, membership, and commissioner service. We need someone from each Pack and Troop to

attend these events. The reason these events take place is so that the lead-ers in the troops and packs receive the information they need to make their units successful. Please make sure there is someone attending Roundtable each month.

Recruiting Every unit should be preparing to have their Fall Recruitments. Let’s make this the year Pelathe leads the council in most boys recruited. Let’s do whatever we have to do to make sure as many new boys show up to the recruitments as possible. We will be doing a recruitment at every school in Lawrence, Eudora, Baldwin, Lecomp-ton, and Linwood.

Bill Self Boy Scout Golf Classic The Bill Self Boy Scout Golf Clas-sic should be another success this year. Many organizations have come together to support this years’ tourna-ment. The committee for the tourna-ment have been meeting making sure that every aspect of this year’s golfing experience will be a great one. A spe-cial thanks needs to go out to Justin Anderson for all his help putting this years’ Tournament together.

Popcorn Sales begin in the month of Sep-tember!! If you have not signed up for popcorn yet, you need to as soon as possible. Contact Jacob Allen at 816.569.4962 or by email at [email protected]. This is an easy way to build up your unit account funds. Selling popcorn is a fantastic fund-raiser for every Pack and Troop

Scouts in Service The following was submitted to AIS to highlight how Scouts help those in need in great ways. This project took place last fall but has a lasting impact for those on the other end.

They knew the theme: Faith, Hope and Charity, the Scout's December motto. Now, they had to find a way to give.

Webelo Scouts, from left, Matthew Hughes, 9, Austin Johanning, 10, Adam Hayes, 9, and Charlie Ghito, 9, vacuum-seal a homemade pie for a care package bound for U.S. soldiers in Iraq. The Webelos, along with Cub and Tiger Scouts of Troop 3013 made the holiday packages for soldiers at Camp Slayer in Iraq.

In November, Turner said, he called the Army to find out more about sending care packages to Iraq, to the Kansas

National Guard unit he knew was being deployed there. The Army gave Turner a list of what he might send in a care package, he said. The list was long, overwhelming. He asked the other parents how to collect the goods they needed.

“We thought the businesses around town might help us,” Turner said.

He went to several local stores, some big, some small. They all said they couldn’t help.

“It was really kind of disappointing,” he said.

After the let-down, the parents made a decision: This is something we have to do. They opted to pay for the care packages themselves, Turner said.

So the pack, Wednesday night, packed dozens of boxes full of pens and note-pads, boxes of moist-wipes — conve-niences unknown in the blistering heat and sand of the Iraqi desert.

The Scouts and parents who put the boxes together tried to deliver some personal meaning with the care pack-ages, Turner said. One man included a copy of his favorite Jack London book with every box.

The pack also included a group letter in every box, thanking the soldiers for their work and wishing them a safe voyage home.

But many Scouts wrote their own letters. They asked questions, trying to understand a place they’ve never known.

Good Turn for America Community Service and doing a Good Turn daily is one of the most basic components of Scouting.

Good Turn for America is a national call to service for Scouts, leaders, and the community.

The goals of Good Turn for America are to:

Inspire Scouts and leaders to higher levels of service and volunteering.

Provide experiences to help youth learn citizenship while gaining a sense of belonging and being needed in their community:

Tell the story of what Scout-ing is doing in our com-munity and the nation.

This initiative focuses on three basic needs – food, shelter, and healthy liv-ing.

Units are encouraged, as part of their quality unit requirements, to com-plete a service project and record it at www.goodturnforamerica.org. This would include service projects in your den, or used for rank advancement i.e. Eagle rank.

Units that record a service project will be recognized at your monthly roundtable meeting. You would also

be able to purchase the Good Turn patch, and your rocker from the Kansas City Scout Shop.

For more information visit www.goodturnforamerica.org or contact your district activities chairman.

School Night for Scouting It is never too early to start planning your unit’s recruitment for this coming fall. While we focus on Cub Scout Recruiting in the fall, ALL UNITS are invited to join us on August 8th at Community Covenant Church at 7:00 p.m. for information to help your unit recruit and retain new boys and leaders. It is important that at least one person from your unit attend this information session and kickoff. You will learn of the new and exciting changes to the recruiting plan.

Information on the Web The Trails West District Website is now up and running. Next time you are on-line, take a minute and look at the District page www.hoac-bsa.org.

We are going to try to keep putting more info on the page that will help keep you up to date on what is going on in the district and in scouting. The site is also a great place to find any info your unit might need about council events and forms that you might need.

Volunteers Benefit from Scouting

Although the primary reason vol-unteers get involved in Scouting is their desire to share their skills and values with young people, volun-teers also benefit by gaining skills through training and Scouting activ-ities that help them become better parents, managers, employees, and

citizens in their community.

The following results reported in the Volunteer Outcomes Study.

Community service and citizen-ship:

Helps them be better citizens (90 percent)

Increases participation in service activities (73 percent)

Volunteer for other youth organiza-tions (66 percent)

Enjoyment and self-esteem:

Adds more fun to their lives (85 percent)

Relationship skills:

Helps them be a better parent (88 percent)

Builds friendships with other adults (73 percent)

Helps them relate to young people (70 percent)

Helps them be more patient with people (69 percent)

Management and leadership skills:

Be a better manager/supervisor (74 percent)

Be a better employee (66 percent)

Deal with people of different ages (60 percent)

Resolve conflicts (50 percent)

DAY CAMP AFTER PARTY FESTIVITIES!!

Cub Scout Day Camp was a great success this year again! More than 378 Cub Scouts came out for a week of fun and games and they were the big stars during our week of Cubs in Holly-wood! The activity all week long was plentiful and the paparazzi were out in full force as the Cubs of Northern Tier made their way along the red carpet. Thanks go to all the supporting cast of staff and directors throughout the week that made this major production so successful! Stay tuned and make your plans now for Day Camp in 2007, June 11-15!

Elections of District Chair and Members-at-Large of the District Committee will take place at this time. All voting members of the District, including Chartered Organization Rep-resentatives, are strongly encouraged

to attend. If you wish to nominate somebody to the District Committee for any of these positions, please send those recommendations in writing to:

SCHOOL NIGHT FOR SCOUTING

Now is the time for your unit to begin planning for School Night. We have a new plan and are looking forward to great success with our new approach. Every unit will play a vital role in mak-ing sure our recruitment is successful this year. You will want to begin by putting the Cub Scout Family Campout on your calendar for September 29 – 30. Make sure you begin working now to identify your leaders for next year. We will be holding a District

School Night Kick-Off for you to get all you need to know on August 2. Plan now to attend this fun event! We are excited about this program and the potential to grow Cub Scouting with this School Night Plan. We look for-ward to your involvement.

AWARD OF MERIT

All district award nominations are being accepted. Forms are available at the Council Service Center, at Round-tables and on the website. This is a great opportunity to recognize those “unnoticed” volunteers for their hard work and effort throughout the year! Please contact Steve Springer, Activi-ties Chair, at 913.631.4215 or Cortland Bolles, District Executive, with any questions.

LEADER TRAINING

Our training team has been working overtime this spring and summer to prepare you as a leader in a new role or as a new leader to Scouting. We have many opportunities for you to get the answers to that age-old question in Scouting, “What do I do now as a leader?!?!?” Well, our top-notch train-ers are ready to answer that question for you. And whether you’ve been doing

this for a long time or are new at your job, we will make sure you are ahead of the game when those boys show up for their first meeting, waiting for “Fun.” This training team will show you the “Purpose” behind that “Fun!” To find out what trainings are right for you, visit the District website, talk to your unit leader, or contact Judy Yeager, Training Chair, at 913.362.2029!

FRIENDS OF SCOUTING

Just a reminder that you should start talking in your unit committee meet-ings now about scheduling your unit’s 2007 Friends of Scouting presentation. This is a great opportunity to hear about the story of Scouting and pledge your continued support to keep the Scout-ing program in Northern Tier District and the Heart of America Council among the best available anywhere. Your children deserve the best possible opportunity to learn and succeed and this program is vital in making sure that opportunity is there! To help out with this campaign and schedule your unit presentation, contact Steve Brady, Fam-ily FOS Chairman, at 913.362.8441 or Cortland Bolles at 816.569.4918.

Troop Honors New Eagle Scout Three new Eagle Scouts were hon-ored on Sunday, June 4, 2006 at the Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO. They are Steven Winget, Diego Heatherman, and James McCausland. These three new Eagles bring the total of young men earning Eagle Scout awards in Troop 84 to 458 in the past eighty-two years.

Steven Winget has been active in Troop 84 for six years and attended H. Roe Bartle. In addition to earning 25 merit badges, Steven lead a team of scouts in reconstructing a bridge on a trail at Cave Spring Interpretive Center

as his Eagle project.

Diego Heatherman joined Troop 84 in 2002. Diego has earned 39 merit badges and attended H. Roe Bartle and Sommers High Adventure Canoe Base. For his Eagle project Diego restored a picnic area at the Lakeside Nature Cen-ter.

James McCausland, active in Troop 84 since 2002, currently serves as Senior Patrol Leader. He has attended Bartle Scout Reservation and Baha-mas High Adventure in 2005. Cub Scout Day Camp Don’t miss it again! Day Camp 2006 was a BLAST! The kids were hyped and busy throughout the day as they went from activity to activ-ity. Beverly Becker and John Burris put a lot of time and effort in order to minimize down time. On behalf of the

Scouters, their parents, and the HOAC, we give our THANKS to everyone who volunteered. If it weren’t for these people, then we would not have had such a great event. We also would like to thank Naish Scout Reservation for hosting the event for another year. If your scouts missed the event, please make it a point for your scouts to go to Day Camp yearly. If you are inter-ested in volunteering for the 2007-Day Camp, contact Jeff Terrell at (816) 569-4947.

Cub Scout Overnighter On Friday, September 29th we will be holding a Cub Scout Family Over-nighter for all new Cub Scouts and their families at Mulkey Park. Friday night will be a chance for the new Scouts to meet other new Scouts and campout for the first time as a Cub Scout. Saturday morning breakfast will be provided followed by some exciting games. We are asking some of our Boy Scouts to help out at this event. Please Contact Matt Gettys at (816) 569-4971 or Jeff Terrell 816-569-4947 if you would like to be a part of this exciting event! Training – The Key to Unit Success Have you been to training in the past five years? Do you think the only opportunities to attend training are in the spring or fall? Did you know that the training team is committed to your success as a leader? Well that’s enough questions. It’s time for you to get answers, and the answers can be found with training. Over the past six years the Pioneer Trails Training Team, led by Dr. Norman Kahn, have put together a superb collection of trainers, materi-als and presentations all designed with one thing in mind –YOU! Your needs as a leader and your questions about the Scouting Programs are at the heart of the Pioneer Trails Training Cur-riculum. By meeting those needs we are able to strengthen the programs our youth receive. That’s what Scouting is all about – strong, fun programs for youth. Make plans now to be a trained leader. It will make a difference in you and your unit! Call Dr. Norman Kahn at (913) 341-4792 to sign up now.
