International Trustee’s Welcome

Greetings all you New England Lobsters! Let me congratulate you on yet another fabulous year of service. It is an honor to be a part of the 63rd annual New England District Educational Confer-ence. This year I have had the privilege of serving as trustee for my home district, New England, the Ala-bama District, and the Minnesota-Dakotas District. This weekend is full of great opportunities to meet new people who share the love of service, get new projects ideas, be recognized for all your hard work as a club, dance the night away, and most important-ly, elect your New England District leaders for the 2012-2013 year. Try to attend as many workshops as you can. You can learn so much from the work-shops. Make sure to attend the service fair as well. I know Zoie has put countless hours into making this year’s service fair the best one yet! Let us take this weekend to celebrate the New England District's successes this past year! As you remember everything you have accomplished, take the chance to think about your goals for the year ahead, and imagine the possibilities we have yet to achieve. I am honored to work with such a phenomenal district. I hope you enjoy this weekend celebrating all the wonderful things you have accomplished this past year. I look forward to seeing many of you in Orlando, Florida for International Convention July 4-8, 2012. In friendship, service and caring,

Lucy McDermott International Trustee

Governor’s Welcome Greetings New England Key Clubbers! I would like to start by thanking everyone who has taken the time to be with us this weekend in Springfield, Massachusetts, during our 63rd Annual District Educational Conference. Wel-come all to an out of this World celebration of you, the New England Key Clubbers! It has been an honor to serve as the New England District Governor over 2011-2012 Key Club Ser-vice year. I have had the great pleasure and privilege of meeting many of you while traveling all across New England, for Region-al Trainers, attending service events, presiding at inductions, and spreading the word of Key Club and how great of an organ-ization it is! The purpose of this Conference is to celebrate you, the Key Clubbers, and all that you have done on behalf of your homes, schools and communities. Make sure to attend the service fair where you and your club can meet many Key Clubbers from across the District and see some of the amazing projects that they have been doing, and maybe even take these projects back to your clubs! This year’s District Board has worked extremely hard to plan and run all of the workshops that can be seen with-in this booklet. I ask that you all attend the workshops this weekend. If you are an incoming officer, I ask that you attend your respective workshop. These workshops are designed to help you execute the duties of your position effectively as you work to take on the exciting role as a leader of your club over the next service year. Finally, I remind you that one of your responsibilities as a New England District Key Clubber is to elect a new 2012-13 District Board of Trustees. Please take the time to study all candidates running for the executive board this weekend and make wise decisions as you will be voting for the new Board of Trustees. Besides that, I hope you all have a fantastic weekend as we all have a great intergalactic service-filled weekend! Yours in caring and service,

Cody Hopkins, Governor New England District of Key Club International

Conference Chair’s Message Welcome New England District!

I’d like to take this moment to greet all fellow K-Family mem-bers to this year’s New England District of Key Clubs Education-al Conference, DeCON. I can’t adequately express how excited I am to be your conference chairperson this year and to be cele-brating my last year in Key Club with all of you. We encourage all students and adults to participate fully in this weekend's activities. This year's new Club Pride Award allows you to show off your club’s pride and be recognized for it. The Meet and Greet gives you the opportunity to talk to Key Club-bers and advisors from all over New England. At the Service Fair, learn more about service and take back new ideas for your school and community service projects. We need advisors to volun-teer to help judge the contest entries please. Judging is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Key Club, and the experience can help you explain to Key Clubbers what it takes to win. A very wise lady once told me, “Learning is shown at its best when implemented in one’s work.” Take what you learn from this conference and use it to assist your club. We’d like to hear about your club and maybe feature it in the next issue of the YanKey, our district newsletter! We hope this DeCon experi-ence will lead to more success for your clubs. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, to get involved, and to have fun. Sincerely,

Karl Alexander Uzcategui Distinguished Lt. Governor, Division 30 DeCON Chair New England District of Key Club International

Change Wars Contest Procedures All money will be deposited into containers located in desig-nated areas. All funds raised will benefit the District Projects. Each coin counts as its actual face value in points. EX: A penny equals 1 point. A nickel equals 5 points. A dime equals 10 points. A quarter equals 25 points. Points from coins are added to the total. Each paper bill counts as its actual face value. EX: $1 bill equals 100 points. $5 bill equals 500 points. Points from bills are subtracted from the total. Strategy: Place coins into your group’s containers to add points to your total. Place bills into your opponents’ contain-ers to subtract points from their totals. Do not make change! Never put in paper money and take out the coins to equal that dollar amount – that’s cheating!

Caucus Information Lieutenant Governors and District Board Members will con-duct the caucus meetings and have the responsibility to see that the caucus rules and procedures are conducted in accord-ance with the guidelines below. The intent of Key Club International policy concerning the conduct of caucus meetings is to ensure that caucus sessions are professional and to provide candidates with an opportuni-ty to explain their views about the offices they are seeking and the relationship of the office to the District’s concerns and needs. The caucus session format provides that each candidate for Governor will be given the opportunity to address the caucus for a period of 3 minutes followed by 2 minutes of questions from the membership. Candidates for all other offices will be given the opportunity to address the caucus for a period of 2 minutes followed by 3 minutes of questions from the mem-bership. There are to be no questions that are not related directly to Key Club or a particular office.

Caucus Guidelines Adults may not participate in the caucus other than to observe and supervise the proceedings. There is at least one adult in charge of supervision in each caucus room. Candidates should be given full attention and respect and be provided sufficient time to answer a question. Questions of a political or personal nature are not al-lowed, nor are questions of race, color, creed, or ethnic origin. Humor type or trick type questions are not permitted.

22

Sample Caucus Questions Why did you join Key Club? What does Key Club mean to you? How has Key Club benefited from your involvement? What does commitment mean to you? What is your greatest strength? Weakness? How do you think you can contribute to our organization? Give three adjectives to describe yourself. What has been your favorite experience in Key Club?
