The week’s are rolling by, a regular meeting still some week’s away under the

present restrictions, after some research Rotary Hall can only handle up to 15

using the social distancing guidelines.

Because our COVID-19 cases are remaining extremely low the WA Gov. has

indicated that it may bring forward the freeing up some of our restrictions, even

if the people numbers are increased to 100+ the social distancing guidelines will

have to change before we can hold normal meetings again.

Monday 18th we held another Zoom meeting, DG Wayne set the meeting up.

We welcomed Rotarian visitor PP Denis Carpenter joining us from Bangkok,

Denis is a member of the Rotary Club of Patong Beach, Phuket. Denis was their

President 2014/15 and has been their Bulletin editor for many years.

Our club became known to Patong Beach when a group of Kwinana Rotarians

visited Thailand in May 2007 as part of a project which financially supported the

Toetee Family in the village of Kuraburi. The team met with members of the

Patong Beach Rotary Club and with the Toetee family including the five children

the clubs were assisting with their education.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner held last Saturday night went off very well by

all accounts, 5 hosts dined and entertained the members and partners who were

assigned to them, report and pictures below.

1. It was such a pleasure to welcome PP Denis Carpenter from the RC of Patong Beach to our

meeting last night together with DG Wayne.

In my time with the RC of Kwinana one of the most rewarding International projects for me

was the support we gave to families in Thailand following the tsunami. This was in

partnership with the RC of Patong Beach so it was wonderful to have contact again.

Denis explained that he is now living in Bangkok but still producing Bulletins for RC of

Patong Beach. Their latest project is called “Feed Phuket”. It stems as a result of their

President going for a walk past a construction site and seeing the desperate needs of the

workers there. 122 people living in near staving conditions that pleaded for help.

The President organised the provision of rice and sanitary essentials despite the lockdowns.

The workers expressed their grateful thanks.

Now the 9 Rotary Clubs of Phuket are joining together to source food.

Thanks you so much Denis for joining us and sharing this heart rendering story.

2. Thank you also to DG Wayne for joining us again.

3. Continuing on the International theme I mentioned that Max has been asked if we could

support an Indian club in District 3000 with a project. They need to partner up with another

club and given our excellent history we were highlighted as a possible choice. The Board

approved this request last week and since then Max has been organising a combined ZOOM

meeting. As the time difference would make the usual Monday meeting difficult 6pm

SUNDAY 7th June is the chosen time frame.

That would mean there will not be a meeting on the 8th. Thanks go to Max for pursuing this on

our behalf.

4. Next in line for thanks this week is John and Chris for organising the GWCTD!! A very

successful night of dining in a cryptic manner. Glad to hear everyone had such a great

evening.

Club Service Report: 18th May 2020

On behalf of all members thank you Eric and Gladys, Bob and Jo, Mike and Kylee, Cyril and Lynne and Genevieve (poor Damian away working) for opening your home on Saturday night and hosting the "Guess who is coming to dinner" From the many responses I have received everyone had a great time, the food was magnificent and the company engaging. International Report. 18th May 2020

The international Committee (RPTLE) is carrying out the following.

1. Global grant GG 2095275 has been submitted to Foundation.

Received an email from Foundation last night (13/5/2020) apologizing for the delays, as they

have been focused on Covid 19 affairs, however our application is now with the Wash

Manager and we should have an answer very shortly.

2. Joined Rotary District 3000, Tamil Nadu, India as an International partner in a new Global

Grant GG 2013563.At this stage have no financial support to the grant, I will act as the

International Primary Contact and John Iriks and Bob Thompson will also be on the

International committee

3. Brother Adriano has started work on the modifications to one of the two sea containers we

have waiting at Don Bosco in Dili

4. Gave a presentation on District Projects at PETS on Saturday 15th May via Zoom (not very

goodly)

5. Was the guest speaker for Rotary Club of Esperance on Monday 18th May via a Zoom

meeting had 28 people on line with DGE, DG, AG and District Insurance officer

6. Will be the guest speaker

• Rotary Club of Matilda Bay Tuesday 19th May via Zoom meeting

• Rotary Club of Busselton-Geographe Wednesday 20th May via Zoom meeting

Youth:

Due to the COVID-19 situation, there will be no incoming youth exchange

students in July. Our outbound student, Cyrus Vince, had chosen to remain

in Switzerland with the approval of his family, however the Swiss Rotary

District involved has, because of COVID-19, recommended that all

exchange students should return home as soon as possible, Cyrus will return

to Perth on May 20th

Polio This Week 13th May 2020

The GPEI has released an updated guide that synthesizes and references

new evidence and recommendations to help ensure continuity of the

programme’s operations in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic – certain countries are facing

stock-outs of bi-valent Oral Polio Vaccine (bOPV) for their essential

immunization services. To address this, the program has circulated a

Statement on the use of bOPV supplied for Supplementary

Immunization Activities (SIAs) in routine immunization activities.

The WHA will take place on 18-19 May over video conference.

While discussions will focus on COVID-19 and items essential for

business continuity, reports on Polio Eradication and Polio.

Transition have been made available to Member States.

The polio report provides an overview of the epidemiological situation

and highlights the Executive Board (EB) decision adopted earlier this

year on the Strategy for Control of cVDPV2 2020–2021, including the

roll-out of nOPV2 under Emergency Use Listing (EUL).

Summary of new viruses this week (AFP cases and environmental

samples):

Afghanistan: one WPV1 case

Pakistan: four WPV1 cases, 13 WPV1 positive environmental

samples

Somalia: three cVDPV2 positive environmental samples

Chad: two cVDPV2 cases

Cote d’Ivoire: One cVDPV2 case

Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him ....what?

During May 2007 a group of Kwinana Rotarians and partners travelled to Thailand to see first-hand

the results of a joint project between our club and the RC of Patong Beach, Phuket. Kwinana’s

contingent included Harry and Julie Tebbutt, Bob and Wendy Cooper, Max and Diane Bird and

Greg and Marge Williams.

Bob C, Harry, Greg and Max each gave us a few words on how they enjoyed their recent trip to

Phuket and Thailand.

The team met with members of the Patong Rotary Club and with the Toetee family including the

five children our clubs are assisting with their education.

A decision was made to use the balance of $A4500 left in the kitty to sponsor another three children, our club will add another $A600 and the Rotary Club of Patong will fund the balance.

Former member PP Michael Leong and Dianna met up with the group in Phuket; the group had 6

days in Phuket before going on Bangkok

Max organised a trip to see the Bridge on the River Kwai, also Hell Fire Pass and the Burma

railway where so many POW’s met their death during the war.

Max Bird was thanked for his efforts in organizing the entire trip which was very much enjoyed by

all.
