New District Website! We are pleased to announce the launch of the new District 39 Website. A big shout out goes to the team members who made this possible: Web Design – Reid Walley, and Webmaster – George Jarosik, These folks have been spending a great deal of time behind the scenes to make this website possible. Thank you! ______________________________________

Imagine the TI logo full frame in all its glorious colors on your TV screen, WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE tagline immediately below. While admiring the logo, listen to the voice over: “Let’s face it, communication isn’t optional. Developing and honing your communication skills gives you the confidence to excel at job interviews and deliver powerful presentations. Toastmasters teaches public speaking and leadership skills for professional development. Toastmasters.org.” Area 31 Governor Jill Dinsmore and her team have charted new waters. Looking for ways to build membership in the Redding area, several clubs approached PBS station KIXE to find out about advertising Toastmasters. With plan in hand, the clubs worked closely with Toastmasters International to ensure monies, contract, and branding were all in accordance with Toastmaster policies and procedures. They found that clubs can pool money with each other, but no mixture of club, district or area funds is acceptable. KIXE broadcasts north of Marysville, watch for the 30 fifteen second Toastmaster ads during August and September! If your club is interested in more information, contact Toastmasters International, Marla Kennedy in Branding and Brandon Wheatley in Tax and Regulation.

Great ambition and conquest without contribution is without significance.

A famous statistician once stated that while the individual man is an insoluble puzzle, in the aggregate he

becomes a mathematical certainty. You can, for example, never fore tell what any one man will do, but you can

with precision say what an average man will do. Individuals vary; percentages remain constant, so says the

statistician. Do not be an average person! Shine as individuals, work as a team!

THE D39 MARKETING REPORT

BRIDGING THE CLUB COACHING GAP

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

We are excited to announce some significant changes to

the District 39 Club Coaching program. When looking

at the results of last year’s Club Coaching program, Bill

Inman (District Club Coach Coordinator) and I

identified a large gap in what the club coaching program was trying to accomplish: (1) We had a large number of

trained coaches, (2) We had quite a few clubs that had

asked for coaches, (3) We couldn’t match up the

resources with the requests due to time and geographical

constraints.

We then took a look at last year’s coaches and club Presidents and asked a few at random for specific ways

to make the program better. Two points stood out:

people had unrealistic expectations on both sides of

what the club coach was supposed to do and the club

coaches needed more support through the year to help

keep motivation high.

VIRTUAL CLUB COACH TRAINING:

Governor’s Only Training: Friday, August 16th @ 7pm

General Membership: Tuesday September 3rd @ 7pm

Register online under the Marketing Events section on www.district39.org

Virtual training will be held every month on the first Tuesday

To answer these needs we have introduced two new

resources:

1.) The Virtual Coaching Program: Designed after

the coaching program in District 74 (New Zealand)

where distance is an issue for members, we will be providing an option for members to provide support for

the club executive team virtually. Members and Clubs

who choose to participate in this pilot program will have

to send progress reports every other month on how the

program is helping. These progress reports will be

shared with the Area and Division Governors so they can provide additional assistance

2.) Interactive Club Coaches Forum: To provide

support for existing coaches through the year, Bill and I

have put together a forum on our new District Website.

We are still making some final tweaks, but encourage people to sign up and share best practices and concerns.

D39 MARKETING LINGO LEAD: An idea for a new club that has not been qualified.

PROSPECT: A lead which has been qualified and shows an interest. May have an immediate or future need. CHARTERLING: A prospect which has scheduled or held a Kickstart meeting and is actively working towards charter. KICKSTART: An exciting demonstration meeting that always closes with “THE ASK”

Page 7: District 39 Toastmasters Treasurer Report August 10, 2013206.130.122.101/wp-content/uploads/08_10_2013_DECM_Reports.pdf · clubs worked closely with Toastmasters International to

CLUB FITNESS PROGRAM Helping Clubs Retain and Recruit Members

The District 39 Club Fitness Program has returned with

four new club strengthening initiatives: Open House

Support, Web Site Development, Mentor Program

Encouragement, and Guest Conversion. On the new District website you will find self-paced resources and

templates that you can share with club officers and

members when you do your Area Visits.

We also have Subject Matter experts on hand to provide

specific guidance to people who need help in identifying the most appropriate resources for their needs. For

example, if a new VP of Public Relations has inherited

an old website and they have no technical experience

they can reach out to the Club Fitness Program

Coordinator, Jason Santa via the LGM Team contact

form on the website or by email at

[email protected]. Jason will then match up

the type of website they have with the appropriate

resource program.

This quarter our focus is on Open Houses. We are currently in the Smedley Membership Drive. This is a

perfect time for clubs to hold an open house. On the

website currently you will find tools and tips on how to

encourage attendance, how to pick a featured speaker,

assigning roles and more. During this period clubs can earn the “Smedley” ribbon as well as the Dynamic Duo

ribbon for their club banners by adding new members

between August 1st and September 30th. Clubs gaining 5

members during this period can also earn discounts on

future Toastmasters supplies orders.

July 13 had 14 leaders in attendance, adding to the 26 trained on June 22 (a third session is planned on Aug. 10 that will make our district 100% trained!). They were given the tools necessary to help them become successful this year in their respective roles to support the mission of the district.

Correction from last report: Immediate Past District Governor Dianne Bish was omitted from the list of instructors in June. Thanks, Dianne!

Upcoming TLI, Aug. 17

The district has scheduled a TLI ses-sion that includes club officer training and enrichment classes at the Univer-sity of Phoenix, 2860 Gateway Oaks Dr., Sacramento, on:

Saturday, August 17 Classes start at 9:30; each class is

one hour, 20 minutes. Schedule and other Club Officer

Training sessions throughout the dis-trict are at District39.org.

Last day to get credit for DCP Goal #9 is August 31. If you conduct-ed officer training outside of TLI, please submit your sign-in sheets to Brian Hatano so he can input to Toast-masters International.

Ying Sang Man coordinated a six-hour “From Speaker to Trainer” work-shop on July 27, putting together three teams of trainers for 23 participants. The goal was to get the "next genera-tion" ready to become instructors for our district officer and enrichment training needs.

Everyone went home feeling the day was time well worth spent. Overall, the attendees were satisfied with the train-ing they received. On a scale of 1 to 5, every team averaged higher than 4.

Louise Houdelette and Zack Souza led the first two teams, while Ying Sang and Brendan Murphy led the third. Thanks go out to Laura Frank who began the marketing campaign, Zack and Ying Sang for supplement-ing it and Louise who really beefed it up.

Kudos to the remaining trainers (Merri Litka, Carmela Porcella, Brendan Mur-phy of District 57 and Dennis Dawson of District 4) for overcoming personal crises and/or traveling great distances to get to Sacramento.

CLUBS WITH 4 (or more) OFFICERS TRAINED, 2013-14

So far, 47 clubs have had at least four officers trained (27% of all clubs). August 31 is the last day to complete officer training for DCP credit.

Congratulations to:

High Achievers:

Division A Governor Gary Petti-grew, 56% clubs with at least 4 trained.

Area 13 Governor Wes Johnson, 100% of clubs with at least four officers trained!

Division H Governor Jeffrey Camp-bell, 53% of clubs with at least four officers trained.

Clubs with 7 of 7 officers trained:

“Individuals play the game, but teams beat the odds”

I was thinking of the Toastmasters International Envisioned Future statement. It simply says “To be the first‐choice provider of dynamic, high‐value, experiential communication and leadership skills development.”

What a powerful vision that has manifested itself! Like many of us, Toastmasters has changed my life.  My speaking, leadership training and experiences have opened many doors for me; both professionally and personally.  Professionally, I was able to transform from an invisible customer service representative into a successful manager and communicating leader.  Personally, I have been fortunate to cultivate many wonderful friendships and relationships, both personal and business, that I treasure.

I came to Toastmasters wanting to develop and improve ‐‐ to get something for myself.  I soon found that greatest reward is working with and mentoring other people. I want to get the best out of life and Toastmasters. I want the same for you and every one of our members. Together we can cultivate skills, build and sustain clubs that can in turn, make the same opportunity available to others. Together as a team we can have that, and we can live into the Toastmasters Envisioned Future.

Let’s get out there and enable our leaders to embrace the value of teamwork, encouragement, and recognition. It is all about the members we serve. Let’s play ball!

Who is Your Club's Proxy Holder?

We want your vote!

Toastmasters clubs hold the most important voting power in the organization. In May this year, club presidents and secretaries received an email from World Headquarters about proxy information for the Annual Business Meeting on August 24 at the International Convention. Make sure your club appoints someone to carry its vote to the meeting. Each club gets two votes and carries a single ballot. Ballots can be carried by 1) a club member, 2) the District Governor, or 3) a non‐club member. If no one from your club is attending, please assign your proxy to the District Governor at [email protected] so your vote counts. For questions or additional information, please contact Louise Houdelette, Proxy Chair, at [email protected]

Area Governors, Visit Your Clubs  Each district must establish and maintain positive, supportive relationships with its clubs. Area governors play a critical

role in creating this relationship through club visits, which are required twice a year. To meet one of the qualifying

requirements of the Distinguished Area Program, please submit an Area Governor's Club Visit Report (Item 1471) for at

least 75 percent of the clubs in your area. Serving Clubs Through Visits: A Guide for Area Governors (Item 219) contains

tips to help you prepare for an effective visit. We are better than ordinary! Let’s visit and submit a report for every club!

DIVISION B REPORT – AUGUST 10, 2013

Division B will continue its legacy of reliably contributing to the District’s success by again being Distinguished or better. The goal is finishing the year with at least 16 Distinguished or better clubs, and with a net club growth.

Speaking of club growth, a demo meeting was conducted just last Wednesday.

Trained club officers equals distinguished clubs (per Russ), and officers training continues throughout Division B. We have had two trainings already, and are planning at least three more.

Currently, 9 clubs have met the minimum of 4 officers trained: Washoe Express Capitol Nevada Carson Communicators Moonlighters Protalkers Sierra Advanced Speakers Toast of Tahoe Lyon Speaks Tonight

And one club has had all 7 of 7 officers trained University

Area Governors have also been going to their clubs and introducing themselves – some performing club officer installations in the process.

We already have 17 new members so far this year; We also have 3 clubs that have already submitted DCP goals

We the People in Area 21, Capital Nevada in Area 22, Reno Downtowners in Area 23.

“B” means Business.

Bill Inman, Division B Governor

DIVISION C REPORT

Division C Leadership Team Lauren Carly Division Governor [email protected] Renee Eagleson Area 31 Governor (Paradise, Chico, Willows, Orville) [email protected] Jill Dinsmore Area 32 Governor (Red Bluff, Redding, Yreka) [email protected] Joyce Pope Area 33 Governor (Marysville, Yuba City, Orland, Beal AFB) [email protected] Jan Shillingburg Chief Judge [email protected] Brad Craig Division Mentor [email protected] Minda Fernish Immediate Past Division Governor [email protected]

My theme for the year: Celebrate people! I picked this theme because I believe that if the Division C leadership team focuses on the individual members and makes supporting the members’ needs a priority, then meeting goals in the Distinguished Club/Area/Division program will easily flow from there. The scope of Celebrating People includes celebrating guests, new members, long-term Toastmasters, club officers, contest participants as well as winners, educational award achievements, leaders at all levels, and fulfilling personal goals. My goals for the year: 1. Get a Division newsletter in the hands of every Division member monthly. See July and August newsletters, Attachment 1. The scope of the newsletter is to celebrate peoples’ educational awards, speech contest winners and other successes; impart schedule information on training, contests and deadlines; and provide short training articles on topics I find are confounding to many Toastmasters from, visiting club meetings. 2. Encourage and help Division leaders to find and engage assistants, if they want one. 3. Encourage and support the Division Chief Judge to sponsor judges and contest training around the Division. Pertinent Activities in July and early August: 1. I met with immediate past Division Governor and two Area governors for three hours each to exchange goals and visions. Scheduled similar meetings with third Area Governor and Chief Judge. 2. I visited Yreka and Marysville Toastmasters club meetings. 3. Started planning for Saturday, October 12 DECM and Division C contest. 4. Assisted with club officer training sessions at Yreka and Yuba City. 5. Area 31 scheduled their area contest and is scheduling club officer training. 6. Area 32 scheduled their area contest, held several Area Council meetings and officer training sessions, and is working on a TV ad for Toastmasters, to be shown in the north Sacramento Valley. 7. Area 33 is planning 1st Area Council meeting and held area-wide officer training. 8. Sent request to TI on behalf of a member for consideration of a new manual for speakers that parallels the High Performance Leadership manual. From: Lauren Carly, Division C Governor

The Distinguished Club Program (DCP) The DCP is an incentive and tracking system for club officers to gauge how their club is doing against standards that Toastmasters International (TI) has found are indicators of successful clubs. TI stresses constant membership building by requiring clubs maintain at least 20 members or grow by a net of five new members from the baseline set the year before. This takes into account any members lost during the DCP year.

Club Officer TrainingDistrict 39 trains club officers twice yearly to equip them to succeed: First during June, July and August and again in December, January and February. Area governors are responsible to ensure club officers have access to training sessions. Club officers must be trained by authorized District 39 representatives in a live training session. It is the responsibility of the District 39 leaders to report to Toastmasters International (TI) which club leaders attend training. To receive distinguished Club Program (DCP) credit, club officer training must be taken in June, July or August, AND AGAIN in December, January or February.
