District 29-I Newsletter
September 2018
District Governor Rob Bright
Together, Let’s Make a Difference
Our District Conference will be held on October 12th and 13th at the Clarion Inn in
Shepherdstown. This is the time for our clubs to participate in the “Parade of
Checks.” This is an opportunity for clubs to make contributions to programs
supported by Lions Clubs International and Lions throughout West Virginia.
Please mail your club checks (1 check per charity) by October 6, 2018 to the District Secretary/Treasurer Sue Long.
The form can be located in this newsletter.
One of my goals is 100% club participation in the West Virginia Lions Sight Conservation Foundation (WVLSCF).
With your help, District 29 I accomplished this last year for the 1st time. Let’s accomplish this goal again. We know
the great work the WVLSCF does every day.
Another goal is 100% club participation in LCIF. We should be proud, District 29 I has accomplished this again the
past year, making it 3 years in a row. Now we are going for 4 years. This is unheard of. This goal is unique this
year, because it marks LCIF’s 50th anniversary. In the last 50 years LCIF has awarded more than $1 billion in grants.
District 29 I has already made an excellent start of reaching both of these goals. I have already received checks from
Lions Clubs to both of these organizations during my DG Visits. We as Lions can be proud of reaching theses
milestones.
Our statistics for Membership looks good so far this year, we are at +6 new members. This is fantastic! LCI has been
contacted twice so far this year with names of people that live in District 29 I who want to be a Lions member. The
information has been provided to the local clubs. Remember to give someone the opportunity to SERVE. Potential
members are falling out of the trees.
As I mentioned earlier, our District Conference will be held on October 12th and 13th at the Clarion Inn in
Shepherdstown. I would love to have every District 29 I Lion attend and I mean that sincerely. Registration form is
located in this newsletter.
If I can provide any assistance to you or your club, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am looking forward to
serving as your District Governor.
DG Rob

LION RUTH STRALEY
FIRST VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR August was an inspiring month as my husband and I traveled to the Leader Dog Center in
Rochester, MI. We fell in love with the beautiful dogs and are now crusaders for the program.
Many of you are preparing to identify your Parade of Checks donations. PLEASE remember the
Leader Dogs. They depend on our donations. Also, if you have a family member or a friend you
think would benefit from the assistance of a Leader Dog take steps now to apply. You do not have
to be totally blind to apply – legally blind is the requirement and it means an individual may have
limited sight.
Plan today for November 14 – it is World Diabetes Day. Lions International is partnering with the
International Diabetes Federation to take on diabetes. Diabetes is one of the most pervasive and fastest growing
diseases in the world today. It affects people of all races, income levels and ages. By the year 2045 there are 629 million
people projected to have diabetes. We must respond to this global epidemic by committing to help prevent diabetes
and improve quality of life for those who have been diagnosed through multi-faceted, comprehensive health initiatives.
Plan an event for your club on that day or as close to it as possible. The ideas are endless -- set up testing in your
community, have a special program with a medical specialist and invite community members to the meeting, invite a
dietician to talk about diet and diabetes, etc. Your imagination is the only limit to identifying the event you have.
Publicize, publicize, publicize what you are doing. In the past Lions was synonymous for sight. Our future must have
us seeing beyond the horizon as we are compassionate and caring Lions.
Every day I eagerly open the mailbox expecting District 29-I Conference registrations. We are going to be in
beautiful historic Shepherdstown from October 12-14. Sunday, the 14th, presents an opportunity for those attending
on the 12th and 13th to do some sightseeing before heading home. So please register soonest. I would love to see my
mailbox stuffed with registrations. The registration form is part of this newsletter. If you have any questions, please
email me at [email protected] or call me at 904-608-4715.
LION JOHN MASON SECOND VICE DISTRICT GOERNOR August saw the teachers and kids going back to school, lots of rain, and some dog days of summer. September brings us football-high school, college, and NFL. Invite friends to HAVE FUN tailgating with you, even if it is a Marshall game. During my visits I have paid particular attention to how each club is unique. For example, some clubs sing a song. One club has a ‘Happy Dollar’. Club members donate a dollar to tell why they are happy, like an anniversary, a special birthday, recovering from surgery, being with friends, etc. I am putting this practice to use
in my daily life. Every morning I will put a dollar in our coin jar and tell my wife why I am happy. We have some much to be happy about. What do you have to be happy about? The District 29 I Fall Conference is just around the corner. If you have not heard yet, it is being held in beautiful Shepherdstown, WV on Fri/Sat Oct 12th and 13th. I hope that you will make plans to attend. We are planning to have some FUN! Come see what Lion Kim and John’s alma mater has to offer.
If I can provide any assistance to your club, please do not hesitate to contact me by telephone at 304-820-7742 or email me at [email protected]. Let’s have fun being a Lion serving our communities.

PCC Al Cox LCIF District Coordinator
Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is the charitable fundraising arm of our global organization. West Virginia has benefited from grants received from LCIF for disaster reliefs like the recent floods in southern of our state. They have also made matching grants needed to purchase research equipment at the WVU Eye Institute and do renovation of a nursing home in Pendleton County. During the past three years 100% of the clubs in District 29–I contributed to LCIF and some individual Lions also donated. For the sixth consecutive year, LCIF has received a 4 star rating – which is the highest – from Charity Navigator - an independent watchdog of non-profits. LCIF received this coveted top rating for many reasons including how we efficiently use donations, how our Board selects grants and because we are transparent. This 4-star rating means that you can be confident that your donations are being used in support of the programs for which they are intended. Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service is the foundation’s next transformational campaign. This is a 3-
year campaign. Through Campaign 100, LCIF will raise $300 million to increase our service impact; fight
diabetes; childhood cancer and expand our global causes. Campaign 100 will allow us to serve more than
two hundred million individuals per year by 2021 and ensure that Lions have the resources we need to
expand our causes and impact. There are many needs facing our communities and the world today. To
others, the challenges may seem too great to overcome – but not to Lions. Lions see the needs of the
world and respond, “We Serve.”
The goals are expansive and no individual Lion, club, or district can take them on alone; but together,
empowered by our global foundation, we can.
By now, every club should have appointed or elected an LCIF Club Coordinator. If this was not done, LCI
will default the responsibility to the club’s Immediate Past President. I will be working with and training
LCIF Club Coordinators to become part of the team to help with this campaign.
My goals are to have every club in the district continue to give to LCIF and consider raising the amount
given. Also, I am going to make a special effort encourage Lions to make individual contributions. Our
district lags behind the other districts in individual giving, but we lead the multiple district in club
donations. I’ll be providing more info as we proceed over the next three years.

Lion Henry Krautwurst
Youth Exchange Update – The Youth Exchange summer is in full swing and we have
had exchanging students coming and going all summer. All 5 of our WV students have returned from their youth exchange trips. Two students went to Japan, two went to Italy and one went to Germany. Two of our youth exchange students from Europe have already returned home; one to Germany and one to Finland. We still have two girls from Japan, 2 boys from Italy and one girl from Germany still with us. They are
staying with host families in Romney, North River Mills, Capon Springs and Gore, VA. On Monday August 13, 2018 Lions Lorrie & Henry Krautwurst hosted a Youth Exchange pot luck dinner and s’more roast at our home in Capon Springs. We had five host families and their kids along with the five exchange students. The kids really enjoyed being together sharing stories, learning to line dance and roasting marshmallows for s’mores while the host families had the opportunity to meet each other and share their exchange experiences. I just don’t know how to express myself for the opportunity to Chair the Youth Exchange Committee. I think I have the BEST job in all of WV Lions. I wish more Lions would take the opportunity to open their homes and share their lives with a young person from another country. Once you step out of your comfort zone and encounter the exchange experience I hope you will realize what an amazing experience you just had. Having these students come to your home and be able to share stories and experiences with them, getting to know them and helping them with their English, which in most cases is already very good, is a very rewarding and enrichening experience. The Youth Exchange committee will begin preparing for the 2019 exchange year next month. As we begin preparing I invite you to consider becoming a host family next year and you too can know the joy that Lion Lorrie and I and our host families have come to know. As I like to tell people who are considering whether or not to be a host family, don’t be afraid to encounter an experience that will forever change your lives. You may contact me at [email protected] about becoming a host family. Remember, this program wouldn’t exist and these exchange students both from WV and abroad would not have this opportunity if there were no families willing to host.

During my trip to Italy I got to visit three different countries - San Marino, Italy and Vatican
City. Also some major cities - Florence, Venice and Rome - meet new friends from twelve
other countries, and enjoy every type of pasta Italy could offer. I loved my experience to Italy
so much and I would love to travel more in the future.
My first host family allowed me to see the cities of Giulianova (their summer home) and Teramo,
experience their lifestyle, and enjoy the typical food of their area. I have lots of great memories
with my host siblings and their friends that I will cherish forever. My family was super nice especially when they
organized for me to see Lily (the other American) before the camp, visited me at the beach during the camp, and
came to the final dinner of my camp.
My second host family allowed me to see Bologna, Florence, and Ravenna. I loved how Federica (my host sister)
would translate for me at the dinner table so I could be a part of the family more. They were so nice to welcome me
into their home while their eighteen year old daughter was off on exchange. Overall, I loved both of my host families
and if I ever make it back to Italy I will definitely make a stop to see them.
At the camp, there were twelve campers including myself from all different countries. The campers came from
Germany, America, Brazil, Finland, Mexico, Sweden, Hungary, Belgium, France, and Turkey. The first day we went
to Venice by boat and we walked around the city to see the main buildings, all the gondolas, and the typical bridge
views of the canals. We stopped at Murano Island to watch the famous glass blowing demonstration. We visited
Ravenna to learn the correct way to make mosaics, the history of mosaics, and we made a tile for ourselves as well.
We had two days at the beach to relax, swim, and play volleyball with all the campers which started lots of laughs.
We visited San Marino which was unique because the city was built from the top of the mountain down. San Marino
was probably my favorite city. It was nice that we could visit another country while in Italy and learn about their
government. We took a journey in the Frasassi cave by crawling through the cave. We spent a day in Teramo to see
the old and new churches. It was awesome to have the World Cup to watch and have a camper from France to
celebrate their victory. In Giulianova we raced in go-karts which became a very competitive experience. One day we
went rock climbing on the side of one of the biggest mountains in Italy. We went to Aqualand waterpark which was a
fun day to enjoy while in the heat. The leader of the camp was a part of the Italian army so one day he had us doing
survival situations such as capsizing a car in water, making a fire with flint, using night vision googles, and shooting
an arrow from a bow. The last day we spent running around Rome to see the Vatican, Trevi Fountain, and the
Coliseum.
Thank you for allowing me to have this opportunity of a lifetime. I truly enjoyed spending time in Italy sightseeing,
meeting friends that will last forever, and also learning the culture. I am blessed that the Lions Club of West Virginia
picked me to experience such a great adventure.

When you hear "Leader Dogs for the Blind", you probably think of the service dogs that
are trained to assist individuals who are blind. Did you know that they also offer other
programs?
On their website, www.leaderdog.org, there is a tab with a list of their programs. I
would like to share some information from their site on a few of the programs they offer. Please visit the site for
additional & updated information. The site offers online applications and the downloading of paper applications.
Each year, Leader Dogs for the Blind offers a Summer Experience Camp. For 2019, the Camp will be held from
Saturday, June 22 - 29, 2019. The camp is for teenagers who are 16 and 17 years old and legally blind. The camp
prepares the teens for the next stage of their lives by offering leadership development, an introduction to guide dogs
and the opportunity to spend time with peers. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2019.
Other programs include the Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Training and the Accelerated O&M Training for
individuals who are at least 16 years of age, legally blind, are able to walk 30 minutes without taking a break, who
speak English fluently and are residents of the United States or Canada. These programs teach an individual on how
to use a white cane. During training, other skills learned may include:
Utilizing a human guide; b) Using orientation skills and directions; c) Solving problems along the route, such as
barriers, crowds, etc.; d) Crossing street; e) Re-orientating yourself; f) Shopping, soliciting assistance when needed,
and more.

Most of us know Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is the charitable fundraising and grant-making arm of our global organization. We know that LCIF has provided funds to help with disasters in West Virginia, helped fund our work with the West Virginia University Eye Institute, and provided matching grants for other projects in West Virginia.
Many of our clubs regularly donate to LCIF, as do some individual Lions. Thanks to the generosity of Lions around the world, LCIF has been able to grant more than $1 billion to Lions service projects and partnerships around the world. Our Foundation is highly respected and allows the service of Lions to be extended and magnified on a global scale.
Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service is the Foundation’s next transformational campaign. Through Campaign 100 we will raise $300 million to increase our service impact, fight diabetes, and expand our global causes. Campaign 100 will allow us to serve more than 200 million individuals per year by 2021 and ensure that Lions have the resources we need to expand our global causes and impact.
You will be hearing more about this campaign during these three years. Even as we look back and celebrate what Lions have accomplished over the past 100 years, we look to the future and see that the needs of the world have never been greater. We see new challenges.
What if 100% of Lions (not just clubs) contributed to this global effort? What if each Lion gave $100 a year--$2 per week—to make a difference?
Cause Impact
Vision $100 funds two cataract surgeries
Youth $100 provides the Lions Quest social emotional learning curriculum to an
entire classroom
Diabetes $100 provides diabetes screening for 18 at-risk individuals
Humanitarian Efforts $100 provides the measles vaccination to 100 kids
Disaster $100 provides immediate relief to four people in the wake of a natural
disaster
Environment $100 provides 14 people with access to clean water
Childhood Cancer $100 helps purchase equipment that will help diagnose or treat eight
children who have cancer
Hunger $100 helps provide regular access to food to 14 disabled, elderly, low-
income or homeless people
Each club has a club LCIF coordinator. If no other member has been elected or appointed to the position, the
immediate past president is the club coordinator. Club coordinators will be trained by the district LCIF coordinators
in the coming months. We have a big job to do, but with every Lion helping, we will do our part in this important
campaign. Submitted by Larry G. Johnson, PID, MD 29 LCIF Coordinator

29-I – Global Service Team
AT THE END OF THE DAY, HOWEVER, IT IS ALL ABOUT SERVICE
WE SERVE
District 29-I Service Goals have been approved, as follows:
1- Ensure at least ½ of the District Lions Clubs appoint a GST Club Service Chairperson. Currently 17 Clubs have appointed a Service Coordinator
2- Ensure our global cause of diabetes prevention and control are known and published. Please encourage your club members to learn about diabetes, and plan at least one service activity. People who have diabetes need lots of family and community support. Check out the Diabetes Service Journey website -- Write about your Club’s projects through articles in the monthly District newsletter.
3- Increase service activity reporting through MyLCI/MyLION. 4- Increase the percentage of hands on service projects delivered by clubs, with special focus on service
areas that align with the new Service Framework. 5- Assist the District to have a positive impact by being a 100% LCIF and WVLSCF contributor.
To accomplish these goals and to increase awareness of each of the LCI Service areas; the appointment of a
Club Service Chairperson is critical. The Club Service Chairperson is a very important officer position in each Lions
Club. It is a new position and as the position in the club is better advertised, more clubs will better understand the job to
be done. This Lion will be implementing impactful service and fundraising projects, increasing service project
engagement of members, and elevating awareness of Lions’ collective impact in fulfilling the LCI local and global
humanitarian needs.
The Club Service Chairperson e-Book is available and provides a fast and logical link to the information needed.
Whether managing the club service projects or engaging other service leaders in your District, the e-Book makes it
easier to access the information, tools and resources used most often to help stay on top of busy schedules.
What do you report? All local projects, which are related to community Lions activities and included in
either of these Services:
Diabetes - Vision - Hunger - Environment - Pediatric Cancer - Other Ways to Serve
How does the Club Service Chair report? Through MyLCI and (soon) MY LION
Need help – please contact me.
