District 29-I Newsletter September 2017 “Moving Forward Together” Between Us Lions We are getting ready for our annual District Conference to be held October 20-21 at Lakeview Resort and the opportunity for your club to donate to Lion sponsored charities during our District’s “Parade of Checks.” You will find the 2017-2018 Parade of Checks form in this newsletter. Each club has the opportunity to donate money to support their favorite causes. I hope you will continue giving to the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). If every club gives, this would be a record breaking 3 years in a row that 100 % of the clubs in our District supported LCIF. Very few districts in the world have accomplished this and it would be a monumental occasion for our District and Lions International. Another goal this year is for every club in our District giving to West Virginia Lions Sight Conservation Foundation or better known as WVLSCF. This would be a first for our District. Let’s make it 100% for the WVLSCF! We also have a new program to fund this year in the Parade of Checks. It’s the “Disaster Recovery & Relief Fund.” During and after the flooding a year ago, it was quite evident that something needed to be done to ensure that we could respond with a network of Lions and friends to take on our responsibility to our motto “We Serve.” To meet this need in our State, the three Districts (L- C-I) have implemented the WV Lions Disaster Recovery & Relief Coalition. We have appointed Lions in our respective Districts to chair and work together to network the efforts to help in the event of a disaster in West Virginia. When your club donates to the Disaster Recovery and Relief it will put your money to good use, buying equipment and supplies to really make a difference in the field. I want you to give to LCIF first, because LCIF has given our state more money to help West Virginia than we have donated to them. Then, give something to the Disaster Recovery & Relief Fund that will help the workers in the field and the communities in need of assistance. The other programs to consider are; Leader Dog, Pilot Dog, Youth Exchange, WV Blind & Deaf Recreation, Diabetes, Quest, Romney Student Work. No matter which ones your club feels like backing with your money, it will be well worth everything to that cause. See you at the Fall Conference, DG Ken “If everyone is moving together, then success takes care of itself.”

“Moving Forward Together”

Between Us Lions

We are getting ready for our annual District Conference to be held

October 20-21 at Lakeview Resort and the opportunity for your

club to donate to Lion sponsored charities during our District’s

“Parade of Checks.”

You will find the 2017-2018 Parade of Checks form in this

newsletter. Each club has the opportunity to donate money to

support their favorite causes.

I hope you will continue giving to the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). If every club

gives, this would be a record breaking 3 years in a row that 100 % of the clubs in our District

supported LCIF. Very few districts in the world have accomplished this and it would be a

monumental occasion for our District and Lions International.

Another goal this year is for every club in our District giving to West Virginia Lions Sight

Conservation Foundation or better known as WVLSCF. This would be a first for our District. Let’s

make it 100% for the WVLSCF!

We also have a new program to fund this year in the Parade of Checks. It’s the “Disaster Recovery

& Relief Fund.” During and after the flooding a year ago, it was quite evident that something

needed to be done to ensure that we could respond with a network of Lions and friends to take on

our responsibility to our motto “We Serve.” To meet this need in our State, the three Districts (L-

C-I) have implemented the WV Lions Disaster Recovery & Relief Coalition. We have appointed

Lions in our respective Districts to chair and work together to network the efforts to help in the

event of a disaster in West Virginia. When your club donates to the Disaster Recovery and Relief

it will put your money to good use, buying equipment and supplies to really make a difference in

the field.

I want you to give to LCIF first, because LCIF has given our state more money to help West

Virginia than we have donated to them. Then, give something to the Disaster Recovery & Relief

Fund that will help the workers in the field and the communities in need of assistance.

The other programs to consider are; Leader Dog, Pilot Dog, Youth Exchange, WV Blind & Deaf

Recreation, Diabetes, Quest, Romney Student Work. No matter which

ones your club feels like backing with your money, it will be well

worth everything to that cause.

See you at the Fall Conference, DG Ken

LION ROB BRIGHT

FIRST VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR

We are rapidly moving through the Lions year! Meetings are being held to

formulate plans and training to help District 29-I and Multiple District 29 to

achieve its goals. Some of these goals are lofty, but attainable. “Desire is the

key to motivation, but it’s the determination and commitment to unrelenting

pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to

attain the success you see” (Mario Andretti).

To help promote LCIF, a new policy has been put in effect, a Club LCIF Coordinator. This Lion will share

LCIF stories, motivate fellow Lions to support LCIF, and enables LCIF to advance its humanitarian work

both locally and globally. Club LCIF Coordinators will be equipped with resources that will allow them to

champion the goals of the foundation to Lions. Immediate past club presidents will now serve as Club

LCIF Coordinators. If he or she is unable to serve in this capacity, the position may be filled by another

club member. Once your club has filled this position, the Club LCIF Coordinator information will need to

be entered in MyLCI. If club president have any questions, contact your Zone Chair.

The Fall Conference is right around the corner. It is being held at Lakeview Resort in Morgantown, WV,

October 20 – 21, 2017. Come and join in the fun, knowledge and laughter. I know District Governor Ken

would like to have a lot of first time attendees.

If I can provide any help to you, please do not hesitate to contact me by telephone at 304-298-4304 or email

me at [email protected].

Together, Let’s Make a Difference.

FVDG Rob Bright

SVDG Ruth Straley

Lion Wayne Worth, Adamston Club President and well known disaster recovery volunteer,

visited our club. He spoke of his life experiences and how those led him to become devoted

to his adopted state of West Virginia and its residents that need help in a disaster.

I strongly encourage all clubs to spend some time with this young man as a speaker at your

meeting. You will leave feeling awe at what he has done and thinking more about what you

and your club can do. “We Serve” is our organization’s motto and too often we simply look

at it on signs, papers and clothes and don’t give it much thought. This young man makes you think about it as he

talks about wearing his Lions vest during work in the aftermath of the Clendenin flood in 2016. He was out again

in July in Hundred and Wallace with other volunteers helping.

Dear West Virginia Lion:

It is hoped that every effort is being made to sell/buy ALL the Beef Raffle tickets distributed throughout the

state before the November 1st deadline. If your allotment has been sold, please send your check with the

ticket stubs (and the correct amount of postage) to me as soon as possible.

Several clubs have requested additional books, and they have been mailed. The amount on hand for distribution

is limited, so I ask that if you do not OR cannot purchase/sell your tickets, please return them to me before

October 1st so that they can be available for distribution. I will not be printing additional tickets. There is a total of

23,000 tickets out and about, and it is felt that if all these sell, this will be a successful project!

Please return the stubs with a check in the amount of sales (and correct postage) to me at the above address before

November 1, 2017. If you can, please send your sales to me prior to the November 5th Sight Foundation Meeting

held during District C’s Conference.

Keep in mind that every ticket sold has four (4) chances to win! Additionally, if your club sells $200 or more

in tickets, your club will receive credit toward a Leonard Jarrett Award according to the amount of sales that are made.

(This amount will be credited to the club account after the completion of this project.)

PLEASE SEND CHECKS – WRITTEN TO THE “WV LIONS BEEF RAFFLE” – ASAP!

Since the Sight Foundation is YOUR Foundation, it is my hope that every club in our state will participate

in this project. THANK YOU in advance for your participation in making this raffle a success and helping our fellow

West Virginians with their sight and hearing needs.

Thanks for all you do!

990-N Re-Instatement and Reporting

$25,000 or less in club’s annual gross receipts prior to 2010 year

$50,000 or less in club’s annual gross receipts beginning with the 2010 year

Fellow Lions has your tax status been revoked? Has your club been re-instated and you don’t know what to do

next?

If your tax status has been revoked, the reason is easy. Small organizations such as Lions Clubs were not required

to file annual information returns prior to 2007. Every organization must now file a return annually between July 1st

and November 15th. Failure to file three years in a row will result in a fine of $400.00 or more. You must file a 990-

N re-instatement and pay the fine!

If you have done the re-instatement process and your application was accepted by the IRS, the IRS will issue a letter

reinstating your club’s tax exemption retroactive to the date of the revocation. Each year you MUST report on line.

The IRS does NOT accept reporting by regular mail. Continue to report each year!

Important information to remember. We often wonder what the difference is between a 501 (c) (3) and a 501 (c)

(4) organization. It is easy to confuse the two classifications as both are considered nonprofits and there are many

similar characteristics. However, there are crucial differences between these two types of nonprofit organizations

and it is important to understand the distinction.

The IRS considers 501 (c) (3) organizations either a public charity, private foundation or private operating

foundation with open membership whereas 501 (c) (4) organizations are civic leagues or associations operated

exclusively for the promotion of social welfare or local associations of employees with limited membership.

Now you are asking what status are we? It is simple! Lion Clubs are a Section 501 (c) (4). Contributions to civic

leagues or other section 501 (c) (4) organizations generally are NOT deductible as charitable contributions for

federal income tax purposes. They must be deductible as trade or business expenses, if ordinary and necessary in

the conduct of the taxpayer’s business.

Have you ever wondered what EIN stands for? The EIN (employer identification number) is a unique number that

identifies the organization to the IRS. This is FEDERAL NOT STATE!

If you’re a new club and you do NOT have a number simply apply for form SS-4 and follow its instructions from the

IRS. You also can apply for an EIN online (www.irs.gov/charities).

If you have been issued a EIN number and it has been lost or forgotten PLEASE do NOT apply for a second one!!

The IRS has it.

West Virginians well know the disastrous effects of flood waters – add 100 MPH (+) winds – thus southeastern Texas today.

Lions Clubs International, through our Foundation (LCIF), has responded with emergency catastrophe grant in the amount of $100,000. The grant will allow Lions in the area of impact to provide life-saving supplies of food, water, blankets and other necessities.

We never know when or where disaster will strike. But when it does, LCIF emergency and major catastrophe grants enable local Lions to respond, making an immediate impact in the hardest hit areas – around the world.

Your donation to LCIF makes it possible to respond at a moment’s notice to this and other disasters as they strike. West Virginia Lions Clubs members are most generous people. Please consider increasing your Club donation to LCIF at the District 29-I Conference ”Parade Of Checks” which will assist Lions in short-term and long-term disaster response.

Our District approved LCIF goals for the year, are:

1- Each Cabinet Member to contribute at least $60.00 to LCIF: $5.00/month – 2- Contribute at least $22,000.00 to LCIF 3- Maintain Club participation at 100%

Thanks to all Lions who make personal (Tax deductible) to LCIF.

Thanks to all Lions Clubs for you support to LCIF.

A Message from the MD 29 GLT Chairperson

PID Steve Glass

I want to share with you my multiple district goals and strategies and request you to share them with all of your club

officers and members. I have already shared them with the MD leadership team, the district leadership teams, and those present

at each of the three cabinet meetings that have been held. I also want to share some remarks about the urgency of developing new

leaders within our clubs and districts and enhancing the leadership competencies that we have within all of us.

MD-29 GLT Coordinator Goals for 2017-2018

1. Increase cooperation and communication between and among MD GLT and GMT and district GLTs and GMTs.

2. Increase the number of newly identified leaders in every district.

3. Increase the number of leadership opportunities and tools available in the multiple district.

4. Ensure that each district develops a leadership development plan for 2017-2018 by September 30,2017.

Strategies to achieve the goals:

1. Hold monthly contacts among the multiple district and district GLT and GMT.

2. Develop a training module for 2017-2018 club officers.

3. Develop a training module for 2017-2018 zone chairpersons.

4. Develop a training module for 2017-2018 cabinet officers.

5. Prepare a customized new member orientation Power Point presentation for distribution to clubs.

6. Promote attendance to the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum.

7. Promote attendance to the Lions of West Virginia Leadership Retreat.

8. Hold a mini-regional leadership retreat in each district, which specifically targets newly-identified Lion leaders.

9. Provide articles on leadership at least quarterly in each district's newsletter and web page.

10. Ensure that a seminar on club officers' roles and responsibilities is part of each district.

Much of the success that we can have depends upon the willingness of club officers and members to buy into my goals

and make them our goals, especially in identifying and nurturing our future club, district, and multiple district leaders. The

success of LCI through the first century was the result of highly effective leadership as well as service and membership. We all

must come to understand that without effective leaders organizing club projects and accepting a turn at a leadership role within

our clubs, there is no way that we can stimulate growth within our clubs, retain members, nor provide the much- needed services

our communities deserve.

How can you help, you might ask me? Here are three very good ways that I know:

1. Identify those members of your club that show leadership potential – those active doers in your club that find a way

to get things done. Let your district GLT coordinator or me know who they are along with contact information for

them.

2. Invite all of your club officers and members to attend zone meetings when they are scheduled and insist that your

zone chairperson provides orientation for new members and invites the district GLT and GMT Coordinators to do

presentations at the same meeting.

3. Plan to attend the Fall Conference and invite as many of your newer Lions as you can to attend with you. Here you

will find many opportunities to learn and become more comfortable in your leadership role.

Until next time, thank you for your leadership and service!

Membership Message by

PCC Doug Long – GMT

How often have you heard: “ASK 1, Just ASK” and

“Each One Reach One”? All are slogans or programs

designed to encourage Lions to invite prospective

members into your Lions Club. As you know,

membership is by invitation only.

Here are a few suggestions to consider when

attempting recruiting members: It may be important

to already know if any current members may have

“Issues” with prospective members, prior to inviting

the prospect to join your club. The prospect should

have a desire to serve others! Prospective members

should have the financial means to pay dues and

membership dues should be discussed with them

prior to accepting their application.

I believe that new members should have something to

offer your Lions club, such as a particular skill, talent

or leadership quality. Some individuals come with a

passion to help a particular cause or disability such as

blindness, diabetes or other health-related issues.

All Lions are not comfortable asking strangers to

join our club or association, however, family

members, neighbors or co-workers are great places to

begin your efforts. Your Lions club cannot grow and

remain effective if you do not ask new people to join

you in service!

Lions Clubs International estimates that each Lion

added to your club can allow you to serve an

additional 70 people in need.

How often have you heard this statement concerning

membership? “Well, No One has ever asked me to

become a Lion”. Don’t let this happen in your

community.

Lions of West Virginia Leadership Retreat The 2018 Lions of West Virginia Leadership Retreat is

scheduled to be held at Stonewall Resort, Roanoke, WV,

January 26-28, 2018. PDG Bob Moffett, Chairperson, and

his committee have been working hard to plan an

exceptional weekend. All Lions are welcome to

participate, but club and district officers and those who

aspire to such positions will find it of special interest.

The Retreat is designed to provide an opportunity for Lion

leaders to enhance their leadership skills and deepen

their commitment to community service. The format is

similar to that of the USA/Canada Lions Leadership

Forum. Four meals, each with a speaker, are included in

the $125.00 registration fee.

The first meal is Friday’s dinner. There will be four

seminar opportunities on Saturday, as well as lunch and

dinner with speakers. Attendees can attend two more

seminars on Sunday morning before the closing luncheon.

All seminars are presented by experienced Lions, many

from within West Virginia, or other presenters with

unique perspectives on their topics. In addition, the

Multiple District program chairpersons are all invited to

have displays and information about their programs.

Details of speakers and seminars are not yet complete,

but they will cover a variety of topics. Some are not

unique to Lions, and will be of interest to non-Lion guests

and spouses. Full details will be included in future

newsletters and the Retreat brochure, which will be

issued soon.

Stonewall Resort is a beautiful conference facility. All

meeting rooms are near to each other and the banquet

room. If you need your lodging to be close to the Retreat

activities, make that request when you register with the

resort.

Get a head start! Registrations are being accepted now,

and the Resort is taking room reservations at 304-269-
