Collectively these clubs have been recorded for donating US$21673 to LCIF
during the 2014 - 2015 Lions year Club donations ranged between
US$247838 and US$9783 It is very pleasing to say that 26 out of 53 Lions
Clubs and 2 out of 5 Lioness Clubs in the District made a contribution
If your Lions Club is mentioned above AND you achieved an increase in your
club membership then I would suggest you fill in the application form for the
Club Excellence Award as these are the two areas clubs find most difficult to
achieve Every donation is appreciated so thank you to you all Our Foundation
is all about Lions helping Lions achieve their community projects
Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) provides grant funding to assist
Lions clubs in developing and implementing large-scale humanitarian projects
The foundationrsquos focus is in sight saving projects supporting our youth
providing disaster relief and combating disability These grants help Lions
expand our outreach and increase our ability within local and global
communities to serve even more people in need around the world So please
support our foundation and make a positive difference in the lives of others
If you have any questions about making a donation applying for a grant
awarding someone with a Melvin Jones Fellowship award or any question
about the Foundation then please contact me My details are in the directory

International President Dr Jitsuhiro Yamada theme Dignity As we strive to serve the needs of others let us always remember to respect the
dignity of those we serve As we reach out to others with hands of service let us always
remember it is not a handout
Harmony As we build others up let us always remember serving others isnrsquot just an act of
kindness it is also a means to build understanding and harmony
Humanity As we show empathy for the less fortunate in our respective communities let us
extend empathy to all who are suffering around the world And as we continue to serve human
kind let us remember that serving humanity is not a duty it is a
responsibility
EVERY YEAR thousands of small cranes cross over the Himalayas
at an altitude of 8000m in V formation for their seasonal migration
They are known as demoiselle cranes and they are the smallest species
in the crane family of birds During the summer they reside in the
steppes of Mongolia As winter approaches they form groups and
begin their southward journey to India At 8000 meters the
temperature is minus thirty Celsius and the oxygen saturation is only
one third of the terrestrial oxygen level Those brutal conditions make
their migration a life or death journey in the truest sense
This gruelling route would be impossible for a small number of birds By flying in a large V
formation each bird can make use of the backflow of air over the wings of the other birds in
front of them and by doing so reduce the total energy expended The leading bird expends the
greatest amount of energy so it is necessary to continually rotate new birds into the position
The demoiselle crane depends upon the cooperation and harmony of every other member of the
flock While each bird is small every bird has great dignity
The determination demonstrated as well as other characteristics like teamwork and their
family structure have endeared the crane to multiple cultures In Japan the crane has
traditionally been a symbol of long life In the Japanese art of origami the crane is the most
basic and representative form that all children learn how to make There is a custom of folding
cranes and giving one to a loved one who is suffering from disease or injury as a way to say
ldquowe wish you a quick recovery and long liferdquo The folding of origami cranes is a meditative act
that shows the heartfelt wishes of friends and family for the ill to become well again But the
crane has also become known as a symbol of peace ndash not only in Japan but around the world
We Lions have been fostering international peace and harmony through service giving hope to
all people and giving opportunity to live with dignity As a medical doctor I made a career out
of fighting for the dignity of human life A doctor might be able to save 10000 lives
over the course his career By working together our association can save tend of
millions of lives each year through our programs
Peace hope determination teamwork and uniting people through
service are central elements of my presidential theme -
Dignity Harmony Humanityrdquo

Collectively these clubs have been recorded for donating US$21673 to LCIF
during the 2014 - 2015 Lions year Club donations ranged between
US$247838 and US$9783 It is very pleasing to say that 26 out of 53 Lions
Clubs and 2 out of 5 Lioness Clubs in the District made a contribution
If your Lions Club is mentioned above AND you achieved an increase in your
club membership then I would suggest you fill in the application form for the

achieve Every donation is appreciated so thank you to you all Our Foundation

Lions clubs in developing and implementing large-scale humanitarian projects

communities to serve even more people in need around the world So please
support our foundation and make a positive difference in the lives of others

The determination demonstrated as well as other characteristics like teamwork and their
family structure have endeared the crane to multiple cultures In Japan the crane has
traditionally been a symbol of long life In the Japanese art of origami the crane is the most
basic and representative form that all children learn how to make There is a custom of folding
cranes and giving one to a loved one who is suffering from disease or injury as a way to say
ldquowe wish you a quick recovery and long liferdquo The folding of origami cranes is a meditative act
that shows the heartfelt wishes of friends and family for the ill to become well again But the
crane has also become known as a symbol of peace ndash not only in Japan but around the world
We Lions have been fostering international peace and harmony through service giving hope to
all people and giving opportunity to live with dignity As a medical doctor I made a career out
of fighting for the dignity of human life A doctor might be able to save 10000 lives
over the course his career By working together our association can save tend of
millions of lives each year through our programs

service are central elements of my presidential theme -

Hello Ladies
What a beautiful day too nice to be inside
The Presidents weekend in Petone was a very busy one but very interesting
and informative There was a lot of discussion on communication retention of
members introducing possible changes within your clubs new members and
making club meetings more interesting and having fun and involving your new
members in all the projects that you do as a club
There are a number of service events coming up that require the whole club to
participate in Childrens Dignity Week10-10-10 for kids mobility and World
Service Day which are all coming up
Our Young Achievers awards night will be on the 24thSeptember Help will
be required for this evening
Thank you to all the committees you are doing a wonderful job and have a very
interesting year lined up for us all
Just living is not enough
one must have sunshine freedom and a little
flower
On your 100 service to the club to
Val Forward Lucy Clark and Helen McSporran
A month into the new Lions year and we have started on a positive note
We have inducted 13 new members celebrated the Presidents weekend
and we are continuing to serve the community Congratulations to all the
clubs who have recruited new members I would like to welcome them
into the Lions family International President Dr Yamada says ldquoAsk one
starts at homerdquo have you asked your family member to join Lions
I appreciate the efforts of my home club Petone Lions PDG Noel Scherp GLT Team Leader
PDG Sandie McIntosh and the facilitators for an awesome Presidents weekend Partners
programme was a knockout It began with stepping into the past at Petone Settlers Museum and
then a nail biting battle of the sexes at a game of 10 Pin bowling unfortunately the trophy was
never found It was great to see Past District Governors join dinner at La Bella Italia to celebrate
the leadership challenge that the Presidents have undertaken Antonio Cacace proprietor of La
Bella Italia was the inspirational and humorous guest speaker at dinner He spoke about how he
realised his dream which struck a chord with all Lions PDG Alice McDonaldrsquos creative
approach of inducting the 2015-16 Cabinet with an analogy to the planets was stimulating
A special thanks to all the attendees the weekend was enjoyable with your participation
Service is what we do Engaging our Youth is the Centennial Service Challenge for August As
is rightly said ldquoYouth who engage in meaningful service projects experience a host of positive
outcomesrdquo I am sure most clubs are already carrying on youth projects Report the activity as
centennial project in the service activity report and contribute to benefit 25 million people
Childrens Dignity Week is from 30th August ndash 5th September 2015 Lions bring hope and help
to children in need I would encourage all clubs to undertake projects to provide more help to
children
ANZI forum is scheduled from Friday 4th September - Sunday 6th September at Auckland Itrsquos
a great forum to meet Lions from constitutional area 7 International President Dr Yamada and
1st Vice President as well as attend the informative sessions
Club bulletins are interesting and I would love to read them all I have missed receiving
bulletins from many clubs Bulletin editors please send your club bulletin to me VDG Sam
Browne and 2nd VDG Rex Bullard if you are not already doing so Information about district
trainings will be published soon club members are encouraged to attend
