YOUTH EXCHANGE Malaysian Hosted by Lions of Creswick!

Over the Christmas holiday period Creswick Lions Club members Bernardette and Pat Tacey were privileged to host Lions International Youth Exchange Participant, Cheng Fern Ni from Malaysia. Fern applied to be part of the program to learn about the Australian lifestyle, culture, scenery and animals that cannot fully be appreciated from books, TV or the Internet. Fern chose Australia because it is a vast country with nice weather, although she queried the latter when it was 5 degrees on arrival at Tullamarine. She was also looking for the clean, green environment that country Victoria has to offer. Fern also wished to experience how we celebrate Christmas and the count down to the New Year. The latter was thwarted by a blackout at 11.55pm in the Bendigo area.!!Bernardette and Pat planned an itinerary that would allow Fern to be part of our extended family's Christmas celebrations and to learn about our native animals at the Ballarat Wildlife Park, our local history around Creswick and the history of Sovereign Hill, the Central Deborah Mine in Bendigo and Echuca. The Grampians, Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island and Melbourne were also important aspects of Fern's stay. Fern also got to experience life on a sheep farm when we visited friends in Tooborac. Fern's adventurous and pleasant nature has seen her take on many challenges, try new and enjoy different food and make many new friends.!

YOUTH EXCHANGE Malaysian Hosted by Lions in Harcourt!

Grant, Sabrina and I from the Harcourt Lions Club have just had the most amazing experience hosting an exchange student from Malaysia through the Lions Club Youth Exchange Program. Jessy spent two weeks with a Lions family in Trafalgar (Tracey and Colin Matthies) and two weeks with us. !!Jessy was given so many opportunities to visit different parts of Victoria, try our food, get a feel for our culture and be a part of our family. She is a very friendly, accomplished girl who is a great ambassador for her country. !!I would like to share some photos with you and to promote this program throughout the district. I think this program needs more promotion throughout the district, state and country. !!The overall aim is to promote cultural understanding and international friendship....which is what Lions -to me - is about. We have a new member of our family who has touched our lives in so many ways. !

ARTHRITIS PATIENTS Helped by Lions Club Generosity Rheumatoid arthritis patients will benefit from research enabled by state of the art equipment donated by the Victorian Lions Foundation to the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health (SCS).!

!Thanks to the generous donation of $78,000 from the Victorian Lions Foundation, Australian Lions Foundation and Lions Clubs International Foundation, the Arthritis Research Group in the Centre for Inflammatory Diseases at SCS has been able to purchase a Tecan M1000 Pro multifunctional plate reader.!!The Victorian Lions Foundation has been raising funds for over 30 years for the Victorian Lions Rheumatism and Arthritis Medical Research Foundation,” said Lions Club representative PDG Eric Gittins. “In the last 12 years we have donated well over $300,000 to Monash University for various equipment and facilities.”!“We understand that this equipment will facilitate a faster translational response to testing carried out in the laboratory.”!!Arthritis Research Group leader Dr James Harris said, “this high-end technology allows us to perform multiple types of assays using the one machine.”!!“We can use it for both functional and clinical assays, such as ELISA, luminescence and fluorescence-based protocols.”!!In lay terms, the new equipment will now allow researchers to perform multiple experiments without having to use different machines for each. !!“Now we have this technology in one machine in our lab, we can increase both efficiency and functionality; it lets us design completely new types of studies,” added Dr Harris.!!Some of the assays used in the laboratory measure levels of immune system proteins in biological samples, including blood (serum) and cell culture samples. !“In the clinical context, we use assays to look for biomarkers or correlates of disease in arthritis and lupus,” said Head of rheumatology at Monash Health, Professor Eric Morand, also Head of SCS.!!The new equipment allows scientists to more swiftly develop important insights into the biological mechanisms of arthritis and rheumatic diseases and push their discoveries towards the development of new drugs. “Overall, it is an incredibly powerful tool that will not only make our day-to-day experiments quicker and more efficient, but will also allow us to expand our repertoire of assays and even design our own.”!!!!

Licola Corner January 2015 Update

Double rainbow on Blanket Hill – Licola. Oct 2014 Chairman’s Report We’re looking forward to another great year at Lions Village Licola and would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful staff and the many Lions and Lionesses who contribute to the success of this often life changing project. Many children will return home from our January camps just that bit more confident in their abilities and with pride in their accomplishments. Licola Application Forms and other information. Please be aware that the Club Application form required to send children on Lions Sponsored Camps are available from the Licola website www.licola.org.au. If you have not already checked you can also obtain back issues of the Licola Corner, from February 2009. Log on, go to Lions/ Lions Portal and tap on archive. Have some fun seeing how our communication has (fortunately) changed since then.

Lions Sponsored Camps for 2015 By the time you read this newsletter all of our January camps have been finalised and the first two will have been completed. We will provide some feedback in the February Licola Corner. It is now already time to start looking for children for the Easter Camps and once again we would encourage clubs to prepare now so they are ready as soon as school goes back at the end of this month. The weather at Licola is usually superb for the April camps, We have been told that there are even lots of “Bunnies” about, not necessarily the Easter type. The new Club application forms for the 2015 camps are on the website. LSC 277 Sunday March 29th – Thursday April 2nd. Note: Easter falls during the middle of the school holiday N4 / V6 Special Needs Camp April Sun 12th – Fri 17th V3 Special Needs Camp April Mon 20th – Wed 22nd

& V3 Special Needs Camp Oct Mon12th – Wed 14th

LSC 278 September Mon 21st – Fri 25th - TBA Lions Sponsored Camp Leaders - we still need your help Our summer camps were again short on leaders and we can only ask that if you are aware of anybody interested in becoming a leader please let us know. Licola is authorized to provide accreditation to leaders who need this for their Tertiary courses. Please contact the Licola office if you can help AND NOTE THAT VOLUNTEER FORMS ARE ON THE WEBSITE UNDER “Volunteers”. Staffing matters It is with much regret that we have had say farewell to “Sudge” Saya from our team. Everyone who has been associated with her wIll miss her cheery personality, work

ethic, ability to solve a problem, and attitude to life and Licola. We will also take the opportunity to welcome back Arran and Jayne Flitton to the team. Something Very Special -- Vale Dudley Barton Adams Life Member 1990 Since Lions commenced operations in 1972 Licola has awarded many Life Memberships to special people who put so much into making Licola the camping showpiece it is today. Regretfully many of our life members pass away and we never find out until long after the event, so we now respectfully ask that Lions Clubs please keep us informed if a current, or as is often the case, a past member who has a Licola Life membership passes away. It is not our intention to report each and every death but it would allow the Board the opportunity to acknowledge their contribution to the family. We mention this because the first we knew of Dudley Barton Adams’ death was from a Solicitors letter advising that he had left a small portion of his Estate to Licola. This is something that we would ask all Lions to consider to ensure the longevity of Licola, but not the reason for putting this comment to paper. People who make special efforts deserve to be recognized for what they have done, please keep the Board informed. Youth at Risk Camps – Progress report. Adam is back in harness, suffering no permanent damage after his Ironman event in W.A., perhaps a little fitter. Perhaps our January camps will keep him on his toes. As at 17/12/14 the total is $17000.00. Fantastic. Our most sincere thanks to all the Lions who have supported Youth@Risk to date, but please don’t stop now. CLUB SUCCESS STORIES (Gisborne)!

The Gisborne & District Club Chartered in August 2014. !

I think you will agree from the following activity report that they are achieving much for their community. !

•Two months ago we organised and hosted a local community group forum dinner/meeting evening. It was a brainstorming night with a great group of over 30 collective minds from various clubs and emergency services in our region with a theme “How can we can make our community better“? The night was such a massive success that we will be holding these every six months. Our club is considering the ideas generated from this and will partner with groups in some of these. !

•Masters Sunbury have contacted us to form a partnership with them attending to ‘good community projects’. To be discussed with other Lions Clubs in the area.!

•Our club is in discussion on assisting with the monthly Gisborne Market, with the prospect of us managing the entire process in 2015.!

•In discussion with the Red Cross on assisting with a mobile blood bank visiting the town every 3 months!

•Currently planning a high presence at Gisborne Festival to raise club profile!

•As a club we assisted a family whose son had recently become a paraplegic. One of our Lions with assistance from our club, coordinated a full renovation to his home that enabled the son to be more mobile in his wheelchair around the house. All of the goods were donated from local businesses and the Hume Shire helped as well. This was a very special dayfor our club as most members attended. A month later, we were also presented with a $1000.00 Community award from local business Helloworld.!

•Raised money for Macedon Ranges Autistic group!

•Masters Sunbury heard that we were in need of a large gazebo for fundraising purposes and kindly donated one to our club.!

•Recently held fundraising event for a 6 year old little boy who is in need of a hearing device when he commences school next year. We raised the $1000 needed to purchase this. The family will be presented with this FM system in February next year. !

•We have set up a program called ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ where we drop into elderly people’s homes and have discussions with them, maybe conduct some gardening, maintenance, helping them reconnect back into the community.!

•We are in the process of forming ‘working committees’ within our club and this has been a great success.!

•We participated in both memorial services of Anzac Day and Armistice Day.!

Thank you to all the wonderful people who turned up on New Year’s Eve at the Hub to make it one hell of a great night. From 6.00 p.m. until about 9.00 p.m. there was a line of traffic at the B.B.Q. This is where the members earned their stripes. The first batch of sausages weren't cooking so we had to buy different ones and start all over again. Once the sausages were changed over, it was full on with the B.B.Q. nonstop for at least 3 hours.!

We would like to thank Alan and Jenny from the "Maryborough Lions Club" for their great support on the night. You both came in very handy.!

The free Pony rides were a success all during the night. The slide and the Jumping Castle kept the operators busy all night. Pop Corn and Fairy Floss were on big demand and the Clown ball drop in the mouth went down a treat. This was a "Non Alcohol" Event that made the night much more pleasant for the children and their parents. No one misbehaved at all during the night.!
