What is distribution?Distribution is important in releasing a film as

otherwise the film will not be marketed and be distributed to people so there aren’t as many people who see the film and then won’t make much profit.

A film distributer is an individual or company who is responsible for marketing and distributing a film.

The distributer can set a release date and decide how the film will be distributed and marketed to the audience.

Distribution Companies

Here are some examples of distribution companies:

Warner Brothers Columbia Universal

Paramount 20th Century Fox Miramax

Which distribution company would be interested in our film?I think that Entertainment One would be interested in our film. It is an American distribution company, but also has an office in London. They are successful and distribute many different films, with a range of different genres. They have recently distributed Insidious 2, which is similar to our film, this means that they may be interested in our film. They haven’t distributed many British films so this might appeal to them as there is a gap in their market for British films.

AudienceI think that our film will appeal mainly to a British audience because it has English actors and in general, British films do better in Britain than in other countries such as America. However, films similar to ours, such as Insidious and The Conjuring have done well across the world so our film may also be a success in other countries.

Marketing StrategiesIf we were to market our film we would use cheaper strategies, including the use of posters. However, as we do not have a lot of money, paying for more expensive advertisements, e.g. TV adverts and billboards, are not as accessible to us. In this generation, almost everyone owns or knows how to use a computer. The internet is a useful resource for marketing a film inexpensively and can reach a wide range of people. We could use the internet for advertising our film, for example: Creating social media accounts, (e.g. Facebook, Twitter,

Instagram) for our film. Releasing trailers or teaser clips on Youtube to advertise our film,

this is a good alternative to TV adverts Create a website for our film with different features for the

potential audience, e.g. forum boards, videos and information about the film.

Self DistributionAn alternative to using a distribution company is to self distribute your film. There are different pros and cons to this form of distribution.

Pros Obtain 100% of the rights for the film Keep all the profits made by the film Choice of distribution methods

Cons Very time consuming as all the work has to be done yourself Could be less successful
