DISTOPIA IN OUR WORLD

Page 2: Distopia in our world

Everyone wants to live in a perfect world right? As humans, we can take steps to improve our

world but a perfect society is simply something we can not create

This is from where the term dystopia was derived.

Dystopia is the unsuccessful attempt at the perfect society.

The fact is, there is not any one person who can play the role of God.

This presentation will exemplify dystopian societies in fiction and the world in which we live.

After the incident of 9/11, there was real fear of terrorism. The American government used this fear to justify reduced privacy, limited human rights and war in Iraq. George Bush convinced the people that it was a peace mission to retrieve all dangerous weapons.

Utilizing the same concept of fear was what the director in the Truman show had done to keep Truman on the island.

An article by Timothy Lynch concerning the war on terrorism expressed the following, “government officials have an incentive to lie and misrepresent their actions so that they can expand, or at least maintain, their power.”

This is the same concept represented by George Orwell in 1984, written 62 years ago. Who wrote in his book, “And at the same time the consciousness of being at war, and therefore in danger, makes the ganding-over of all power to a small caste seem the natural unavoidable condition of survival.” (Orwell 2.9)

How perceptive Orwell was…

Truman was under 24/7 surveillance his entire life. This film illustrated an extreme depiction of invasion of privacy. The director always needed to know what Truman was doing

to ensure he was following the script he created
