Distinguished Performance Awards
We are pleased to welcome you to the Committee for Economic Development’s 2012 Distinguished Performance Awards Dinner.
This year, CED commemorates its 70th Anniversary – an incredible milestone and celebration of its strong legacy of engaging leaders in public policy deliberations to achieve a strong U.S. economy, competitive workforce, vibrant education system, and sound democratic institutions.
The Distinguished Performance Awards recognize the companies and individuals who have answered CED’s call for leadership in each of these areas, and tonight we are proud to honor:
Alan Mulally, CEO of Ford Motor Company, is receiving the Peter G. Peterson Award for Business Statesmanship in recognition of his strong commitment to sustainability, the environment, and investing in communities. His work at Ford is an important contribution to revitalizing U.S. manufacturing and to enhancing our global competitiveness.
Our Corporate Citizenship Award is presented to Wes Bush, Chairman, CEO, and President of Northrop Grumman. We applaud Wes for his work as Chair of the Business-Higher Education Forum and the efforts he’s undertaken to advance education reform and STEM education.
Carl Camden, CEO of Kelly Services, is receiving our Excellence in Public Policy Award. Carl’s far-reaching efforts to support policies that drive economic growth and improve workforce competiveness through enhanced education are truly exceptional. We are proud to announce that Carl will become CED’s Co-Chair in January 2013.
We are delighted to present the Leadership in Diversity Award to Richard Edelman for his long-standing commitment to the advancement of women. We are inspired by Richard and his team who provide incredible encouragement to women within the firm through mentorship, sponsorship, education, and career development.
Jeff Joerres is receiving our Trustee Leadership Award for his service as Co-Chair of CED’s Postsecondary Education Subcommittee. Jeff is a strong partner with CED across the full spectrum of educational excellence and works tirelessly to share our recommendations and to engage fellow business leaders as catalysts for change.
Bruce MacLaury is also being recognized with the Trustee Leadership Award for Co-Chairing the Postsecondary Education Subcommittee and for his leadership on CED’s Policy & Impact and Executive Committees. Through his active participation, Bruce has demonstrated his dedication to CED’s mission and helped shape its adaptation to changing times.
On behalf of CED’s Board of Trustees, we extend a heartfelt welcome and are pleased to have you with us for this special celebration of leadership and excellence.
Roger W. Ferguson, Jr. Donald K. Peterson President and CEO Former Chairman & CEO TIAA-CREF Avaya Inc.
The Committee for Economic Development is an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan business-led organization addressing the critical economic and social policy issues facing the United States.
CED was founded in 1942 to strengthen the post-war economy by improving communication between business and government. In 1945, CED’s work was critical to completing the Bretton Woods Agreement, which established the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Three years later, CED’s report on “An American Program of European Economic Cooperation” outlined a strategy that inspired the Marshall Plan. CED’s first Chairman, Paul G. Hoffman, the CEO of Studebaker, later accepted President Harry Truman’s call to lead the agency that administered the Marshall Plan.
CED’s Trustees bring the best of business thinking to bear on public policy – to achieve a strong U.S. economy, sustainable public finances, a skilled and innovative workforce, sound democratic institutions, a vibrant public education system, and a competitive global economy.
CED’s mission of seeking the nation’s interest rather than any partisan, ideological, personal or commercial interest distinguishes CED from many other organizations. This approach also ensures the integrity and objectivity of its work, which enhances its effectiveness and credibility. Trustees guide CED’s research agenda through Policy Subcommittees which meet regularly throughout the year to identify key public policy issues and then conduct individual research projects. For each of the issues on which they work, CED Trustees also seek ways to have an impact on public policy. CED’s current projects include:
Education – CED’s newest project is aimed at increasing student access to and success in postsecondary education while maintaining educational rigor and quality. Improving the performance of the nation’s postsecondary institutions is essential to preparing individuals for the demands of 21st century jobs and increasing U.S. global competitiveness.
CED is the recognized business leader in the campaign for early education, demonstrating its payoff in later educational achievement, citizenship, and productivity. CED continues to build partnerships between business, education and community leaders across the country in support of early childhood education and development programs.
CED has also worked to improve the quality of elementary and secondary education through the enhancement of standards and assessment tools; encourage reform of teacher compensation and pension policies; promote stronger math and science education; and highlight the importance of foreign languages.
Fiscal Health – CED continues to be the leading business voice for sound, responsible fiscal policy to maintain U.S. prosperity. Restoring fiscal health in the wake of the recent economic downturn will require years of hard work and difficult choices. Success will be
Committee for Economic Development
impossible without business creativity and leadership, and CED plays an essential role in this effort.
CED’s Fiscal Health Subcommittee has informed the public about the seriousness of the nation’s fiscal crisis, and called on policymakers to address the problem in a bipartisan fashion, rather than seeking to score political points. To these ends, the CED Subcommittee has prepared a public statement from business leaders, an innovative document for the public at large to illustrate the risks, and a plan to break the impasse over the expiring tax cuts, stimulate the economy in the near term, and to make a binding commitment for responsible budgeting in the long run. CED has launched an endorsement campaign to showcase business support for the principles of the statement, and has secured a strong group of endorsers. CED also continues to press policymakers to achieve quality, affordable health care for all as an essential part of fiscal responsibility.
Democratic Institutions – For over a decade, CED has been the leading business voice for campaign finance reform. CED has redoubled its work with respect to both federal offices and the selection of an independent judiciary. CED has made the business case for greater openness and disclosure, and urges companies to pursue sound governance practices and avoid undisclosed expenditures in political campaigns.
Corporate Governance – CED’s work explains how corporations have lost credibility through short-sighted and overly self-interested behavior, and how shareholders, directors, CEOs and other managers can regain public trust by promoting the long-term, enduring qualities of their companies and achieving strong ethical and economic performance.
In addition, CED is leading an ongoing program to address women’s economic empowerment and the benefits of increased gender diversity across the full spectrum of enterprise, including on corporate boards. American companies must support women and their advancement in order to remain globally competitive.
Globalization – In troubling economic times, when protectionism is a tempting political escape, CED reminds the United States and the world of the need for freer and more open trade. Freer trade is important not only for its direct benefits for the United States but also because trade, along with private and public investments, strengthens our engagement with the world and promotes solutions to critical global problems, especially in developing nations burdened by poverty and lack of economic opportunity.
CED’s work and approach to public policy remain critical. We seek to rebuild trust in business because we consider that trust to be an essential element in a vibrant American economy and a strong democracy.

Alan Mulally President and Chief Executive Officer
Ford Motor Company
The Peter G. Peterson Award for Business Statesmanship was established to recognize executives who champion issues that are in the best interest of the public good, rather than their company or personal interests, and hold themselves to the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
CED is proud to honor Alan Mulally, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ford Motor Company, for his leadership and focus on reviving Ford and investing in his people, while
maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability, the environment, and smarter manufacturing. The work he has done at Ford is an important contribution to revitalizing U.S. manufacturing and to helping the U.S. compete in a global marketplace.
In addition to Alan’s contribution to revitalizing manufacturing in America, CED admires his extraordinary leadership of the “One Ford” strategy. By developing a compelling vision and ensuring relentless implementation, Alan has been a stellar leader at Ford. He is a true example for other corporate leaders to follow.
Alan’s distinguished career includes management positions at Boeing. Currently, he serves on the President’s Export Council, is a member of the United States National Academy of Engineering, and a fellow of England’s Royal Academy of Engineering.
CED commends Alan for his dedicated leadership as a Business Statesman as we present him with the Peter G. Peterson Award for Business Statesmanship.
Distinguished Performance Award for Corporate Citizenship
Wes Bush Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President
Northrop Grumman Corporation
Wes Bush has set a true example of corporate citizenship by aligning social responsibility strategies with Northrop Grumman’s core business goals and day-to-day operations. CED applauds Wes for his work as Chair of the Business-Higher Education Forum and the efforts he’s undertaken – personally and on behalf of Northrop Grumman – to advance practical education reforms at the state and national levels.
In addition, Wes’ emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) resonates with CED’s own focus, through its Business Champions for Postsecondary Student Success initiative, on improving innovation, technological creativity, and productivity in our education system.
We admire Wes’ extraordinary passion and dedication to enhancing postsecondary education in the U.S. His efforts to garner business support to invest strategically in our graduates are essential to ensuring that the American economy has a workforce that can deliver and compete in the global economy.
Bush earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also completed the University of California, Los Angeles’ Executive Management program. Bush serves on the board of directors of Norfolk Southern Corporation. He also serves on boards of several non-profit organizations, including the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Conservation International and the Business-Higher Education Forum. In 2008, Bush was appointed to serve on the National Infrastructure Advisory Council.
CED is honored to present the Corporate Citizenship Award to Wes Bush and Northrop Grumman.
Distinguished Performance Award for Leadership in Diversity
Richard Edelman President and CEO
Edelman
We are proud to honor Edelman for their long-standing commitment to the advancement of women and to placing a strong emphasis on leadership opportunities for women, particularly as they contribute to global competitiveness.
CED is inspired by Richard Edelman and his team, including Matt Harrington, Global COO and Gail Becker, Chair of Canada, Latin America, and U.S. Western Region, who provide outstanding leadership, support, and encouragement to women within the firm.
Richard Edelman set a goal that 50% of Edelman’s executives on their Strategy Committee, Operating Committee and practice leadership will be women by 2016. He asked Gail and Matt to help create an environment in which women are able to succeed at senior levels in Edelman. They created an internal task force called the Global Women Executive Network (GWEN) and more than 700 women globally have already joined. This network is committed to addressing areas such as mentorship, sponsorship, education, policy, and career development to ensure the firm cultivates a culture and environment in which women want to stay and excel to the senior most levels.
Edelman has also established a special page on the company’s intranet where employees can celebrate successes, share stories and hear from senior women both inside and outside the firm. GWEN has additional initiatives underway including a guest speaker series, local office ‘lunch and learns,’ surveys and focus groups to better understand these issues in all regions of the company. The response among Edelman employees has been extremely positive.
CED is pleased to count Edelman as a strong partner and honored to present the inaugural Leadership in Diversity Award to Edelman.
Distinguished Performance Award for Excellence in Public Policy
Carl Camden President and Chief Executive Officer
Kelly Services
CED is proud to recognize Carl Camden and Kelly Services for their strong commitment to educational excellence, innovation and economic development.
We are pleased to highlight Carl’s far-reaching efforts to support policies that drive economic growth and improve workforce competiveness and productivity through enhanced education reform, particularly at the postsecondary level.
As a Trustee of CED, Carl plays an important leadership role in sharing our recommendations for policy development with the larger business community. In addition to working closely with CED on our early childhood and postsecondary education programs, Carl has been a champion of our fiscal health initiative and work on health care reform, legal reform, and corporate governance.
Carl’s expertise is broadly represented across business, government, academic, and non-profit sectors. In 2007, Carl was a founding member of Better Health Care Together, a coalition urging fundamental reform of the American health care system. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Detroit Regional Chamber, the Board of Directors of the Detroit Medical Center, and the Board of Trustees of the University of Detroit Mercy, and on the Detroit Board of Directors for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Carl was also an associate professor in the Communications Department of Cleveland State University.
CED is pleased to count Carl as a Trustee and looks forward to welcoming him as our Co-Chair in 2013. It is our honor to present the Excellence in Public Policy Award to him and Kelly Services.
Distinguished Performance Award for Trustee Leadership
Bruce MacLaury President Emeritus
The Brookings Institution
CED is pleased to recognize Bruce MacLaury as an exemplary leader, thoughtful advisor, and dedicated Trustee of our Board.
Bruce currently serves as Co-Chair of CED’s Postsecondary Education Subcommittee. His input and guidance of our efforts to increase the productivity and effectiveness of the postsecondary sector by mobilizing business attention and support for broad-access institutions have been invaluable. We greatly appreciate the time he has devoted to developing CED’s pragmatic policy recommendations and sharing them with relevant business, academic, and policy communities.
Bruce is a long-time member of CED’s two key governing bodies – the Policy & Impact Committee and the Executive Committee. As an active participant on these committees, he has demonstrated his dedication to CED’s mission, and has helped shape its adaptation to changing times.
Bruce previously served as President of the Brookings Institution and as President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He also worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and at the Treasury Department. From this distinguished career, Bruce brings extensive knowledge and policy expertise to CED’s programs.
We are proud to have Bruce’s leadership on the Board and thank him for the many contributions he has made to our governance and policy programs.
Distinguished Performance Award for Trustee Leadership
Jeffrey A. Joerres Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
ManpowerGroup
Jeff Joerres is a highly dedicated Trustee of CED’s Board who has provided exceptional leadership of our programs, particularly postsecondary education reform.
Joerres currently serves as Co-Chair of CED’s Postsecondary Education Subcommittee along with fellow Trustee and Awardee Bruce MacLaury. He has brought significant insight and business experience to our Business Champions for Postsecondary Student Success initiative. Joerres has also engaged ManpowerGroup as a strong partner with CED, and we are proud to be working with Jeff and his colleagues across the full spectrum of educational excellence.
As a Business Champion for Education, Joerres works tirelessly to share CED’s recommendations for reform and to engage fellow leaders at the state and national levels.
Joerres is a true thought leader on how innovative workforce solutions, including job training, serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic development. This year, he co-chaired the B20 Task Force on Employment, and delivered its five recommendations for boosting global employment at the G20 Summit in Mexico. Joerres recently co-chaired the World Economic Forum on Latin America and has testified at a hearing of the U.S. Joint Economic Committee focused on policies to foster economic growth.
Joerres was honored with CR Magazine’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 for significant commitments in corporate social responsibility.
CED is proud to recognize Joerres with our Trustee Leadership Award, and we thank him for the many contributions he has made to CED and society.

We join in congratulating Richard Edelman for receiving the Distinguished Performance Award for Leadership in Diversity and are committed to creating an environment where women are encouraged to lead and succeed.
EDELMAN PROUDLY SUPPORTS THE COMMITTEE FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND SALUTES ALL OF THIS YEAR'S AWARD RECIPIENTS.
–RICHARDEDELMAN President & CEO, Edelman
I want Edelman to be the place where women can grow, succeed, choose to have children and come back to lead.
So many women have given their ‘all’ to Edelman, so it’s only natural that Edelman can and should be the place for women to have it all.
CONGRATULATIONS
