We've all been there. Running out to a furniture store to pick up a rug

to 'fill a gap' or to 'make do' until we can get something we really want.

Might not be that cheap, perhaps even a few hundred, but it will have to do

for now.

Problem is, months in, it's balling up and its starting to look dirty and mottled.

Or maybe its the scratchy synthetic feeling that's really bothering you, or a certain

smell - perhaps from a nasty glue used in manufacturing?

Unlike wool, cowhide is hypo allergenic, making it fabulous for the whole family - kids

included! Dirt, dust and even liquids are repelled – it's all down to the fabulous natural oils

within the hide. And to clean it? Lightly vacuum it or take it outside and shake any dust off!

Art Hide is always made from the finest quality hide; and so it has a glorious lustre. That's because it's

sourced from the the best tanneries in Argentina, Brazil and Italy that are regulated to the highest global

standards. Art Hide always use commercial grade nylon thread that ensures a life time of use.

Be mindful when looking at cheap cowhide products that are a-plenty on the market. Many are produced

from factory scraps in India or Bangladesh, where unregulated tannery conditions are polluted and dangerous

for workers; many of whom include child labour.

Inferior hide rugs almost always use cheap cotton thread that unravels and snaps, causing the rug to come apart.

Often the hide has a dull quality, may smell because of substandard tanning practices and/or may thin very quickly.

The size of your rug usually comes down to the size of the room or the area within a room that you're trying to frame.

The rule of thumb usually with rug purchases is to go as large as you can afford, particularly with large rooms.

For a bedroom or lounge room, it definitely looks best to have slightly more generous proportions. For example, having the edge of the rug running just underneath the bed or couch.

Don't discount smaller rugs though; they can be perfect for small spaces or a sitting room area, with chairs around the outside of the rug, for example.

When choosing a rug, the natural starting point should reflect your own style and the furniture and décor you already own. However, Art Hide's rugs are surprisingly adaptable for different interiors and so it's worth keeping an open mind as to what designs might work.

Our laser burn and metallic topped hide designs are brilliant for a Wow! factor and are often seen in living spaces or open plan areas where they receive maximum appreciation.

I have always loved cowhide, but it was a journey to Argentina in 2009 that confirmed that - and ultimately changed

my destiny. I came away not only with a love for this amazing country, but also with a vision of taking the raw

aesthetic of this extraordinary textile to a whole new level.

Working with my sister Bree, a sensational textile and fashion designer, we introduced contemporary design &

colour and a range of innovative new hide finishing techniques, while still respecting and playing to the

strengths of cowhide's natural beauty.

Sometimes a standard rectangle rug won't work in a space; so its great to know that many options exist within Art Hide's ready-made rug range. This includes circular rugs, hexagons, almost square rugs, and natural hide shapes. And of course if you don't see the shape you need, we can always create a design for you with our Bespoke Service.

The shape you select needs to make sense within the proportions of your space. For example, circular rugs work well in awkward corners by opening the space up. Small hides can be a great solution for the space beside, or at the end of your bed. Rectangular rugs are brilliant in large spaces and under dining tables.

C O L O U R Most often, your colour preferences will come down to a matter of taste and personal style.

It's worth remembering though, that a rug can be transformative of a space and so colour is

actually vital to get right, from the ground up!

You can never go wrong with natural hide colours - have a closer look at our Classic Rug Collection.

If you prefer a small amount of colour, then a style like our Division rug would be perfect.

If the rug will be the main feature of your interior, then styles such as the Angulo blue, Zirah orange, or

Looking after your Art Hide rug couldn't be any easier! Art Hide is highly resistant to stains and is very easy to clean and maintain.

Vacuuming or brushing by hand in the direction of the hair growth will maintain the rug's lustre by redistrib-uting natural oils. Liquid substances will seldom penetrate the hide and most spills float above the surface long

enough to be wiped off with a damp sponge. Products can also be wiped with a light cleaning product.
