What is a Display Wall?

! Large AND High-resolution combined

! Not front projection (step right up)

! Few (no) other display systems can provide both simultaneously

Why a Display Wall?

! When is large scale and high-resolution simultaneously

desirable?

! Large images where both zoom and context are

needed

! Putting many different images/windows up

simultaneously

! Where multiple individuals need to see & interact with

image & each other

Roger’s Bell Curve

! Innovators - the risk takers willing to take the initiative and time to try something new

! Early Adopters - tend to be respected group leaders, the individuals essential to adoptionby whole group.

! Early Majority - the careful, safe, deliberate individuals unwilling to risk time or otherresources

! Late Majority - those suspect of or resistant to change. Hard to move without significantinfluence

! Laggards - these are those who are consistent or even adamant in resisting change.

Pressure needed to force change.

Pathology: Man in the Pan

! LEARNING CONTEXT:One pathologist meets with a group of 6students in the Fleischmann Labs, gives asmall lecture, and then they move to thePathology wing. The dissected organ muststay in the wing due to HIPAA requirements.Students crowd around the specimen andlook at the screen to see high-resolutionmacro captures of the specimen..

! LEARNING PROBLEM:The benefit of having a small group forsessions like this is that students can get upclose and see the specimens in high-detail.The current setup does not allow for largehigh-resolution viewing. It is currentlyimpossible to obtain an extremely high-resolution image from a specimenimmediately in front of the group.

! SOLUTION:A DisplayWall would allow a compactedPathology room to show extremely highresolution images of very fresh specimensto groups of students.

Page 23: Display Walls in Healthcare Education: What, Why, How · detailed slideshow of images and show it to students using the DisplayWall. GIR Annual 2008 ... Mac 4 5 6 4 2560x1600 PC Mac

Histology: Virtual Microscopy

! LEARNING CONTEXT :In the Human Health and Disease course aswell as Histology, students use microscopesin small groups in the Fleischmann Labs tosee details in cells and pathology slides. Both courses are beginning to use virtualmicroscopy (Google maps-style imaging) asreferences for students or in required coursesessions.

! LEARNING PROBLEM :When viewing images on a microscope orprojection screen, students often must zoomin extremely far to see the small structuresand then don!t learn the context of what theyare looking at.

! SOLUTION:Students will benefit from seeing tinystructures in the context of a larger portion ofthe slide than is normally visible in amicroscope and projection screen. TheDisplay- Wall will allow for the referencebest-example slides with a very largeviewing area. These slides will be accessibleto students at home and in the computerlabs, as well, via Aperio or Zoomify viewers.

Anatomy: Prosection

! LEARNING CONTEXT :Students in Human Anatomy watch lecturesabout the human body and then work in groupsto dissect their own cadavers immediatelyafterwards. Many dissections require lots of timeto prepare. The students may spend lots of timedoing tedious work that does not involvelearning.

! LEARNING PROBLEM :Dr. Whitmore: one deficiency in Human Anatomyis that we don!t teach the inner ear. There isvalue in teaching students about the ossicles, but it!s so tiny and it!s so bloody difficult todissect that we!ve never done it before. Ourphotographs in the atlas are in some wayslimited because of the need to show orientationbut also details. The pages are just not bigenough.

! SOLUTION :Faculty will do a detailed prosection of themiddle ear and document the steps with a high-resolution still camera. They will create adetailed slideshow of images and show it tostudents using the DisplayWall.
