Letter from the PublishersDear Readers,

At a time when hard copy print publications are rapidly disappearing in favor of the ipad, iphone, kindle or whatever the next device may be that replaces print...it’s comforting to know that there are venues that exist where we still cherish the hard copy printed word. You know what we’re talking about...that special time just before the curtain goes up at TPAC, Schermerhorn, The Franklin Theatre and the Martha Rivers Ingram Center for the Performing Arts at Vanderbilt. Clearly the performing arts venue setting is going to be the last bastion for print in America.

If you or your company is interested in advertising, please let us know. We offer a very unique advertising package that not only includes all seven Playbill publications listed below, but also our very popular newsstand annual guide, Nashville Arts & Entertainment. We are the only print publisher in Nashville that offers our advertisers newsstand exposure plus the finest venues where you have the confidence in knowing that your advertising message is actually being seen. No fast forward-ing, no channel surfing, and no distractions before the curtain goes up...everyone is focused on their Playbill.

We are thankful for all our readers and advertisers...couldn’t do it without you!

Enjoy the show!

THE UNPARALLELED BMW 528i SEDAN.

When comparing the BMW 528i Sedan to rivals like the Mercedes E350, some stark differences quickly come to light. To start, the 528i is faster than the E350, and more fuel-effi cient, with 34 mpg hwy vs. 30 with the Mercedes.* The 528i widens its lead with a comprehensive maintenance plan (that costs you nothing), and a lower MSRP than the E-Class. Looks like it’s time for a test drive of the 528i today.

* Fuel-effi ciency claims based on EPA estimates. The 528i achieves 23/34 city/highway mpg, the Mercedes-Benz E350 achieves 20/30 city/highway mpg. Actual mileage may vary. For comparison purposes only. Speed claim based on published 0–60 acceleration times and MSRP claims based on published information from manufacturer websites. 1 Whichever comes fi rst. For years, I’ve announced seasons from our stages, met with patrons in our lobby, and shared the latest news in columns like this. Now, I’m making the leap to Twitter. Follow me!

I’ve just begun to tweet as a fresh way to talk to TPAC patrons and to hear from you. I’ll give you insights into TPAC operations, the Broadway network in Nashville, New York, and the nation … maybe even around the world.

I hope we’ll all have some fun sharing short snippets of news, amusing stories, and general observations from our daily lives, our love for theatre, and our commitment to arts education. You’ll see another side of my work and my life as TPAC’s president and chief executive officer. And, hopefully, I’ll learn more about you as well.

A decade ago, who could have imagined that 140 characters or less would be used in some of our most fun, personal and interesting conversations? Who could have known we could reach so many people so easily, whether it’s to say “Hi” or build and engage communities around the world?

The more I tweet, the more I hope to hear from you, too. I always want to hear what you loved or hated at TPAC, or what you want to see next. But I also want to learn about the books you’re reading, the movies that captivate you and, of course, the theatre, dance, and music that touches your life. Saw a Broadway show in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, or LA and absolutely loved it? Tweet me.

Talk to you soon,

@tpacCEO

Welcome to the Tennessee Performing ArTs CenTerby Kathleen W. O’Brien TPAC President and Chief Executive Officer

TPAC education 2013-14 PreviewHistory, world culture, and literature come to life on stage for thousands of children every year through TPAC Education’s Annual Season for Young People. TPAC Education also trains teaching artists who collaborate with teachers in the classroom at no cost to schools.

Here are three outstanding productions to be presented during the 2013-14 school year. Imagine the possibilities!

Ballet Hispanico, October 2013 /// When Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast in October

2012, the artists from this troupe were unable to travel to Nashville and had to cancel their scheduled engagement. But, in response to the tremendous demand for the show from school teachers last year, they’re back on the season. The company performs a blend of Latin, classical, and modern dance to music from internationally-known Hispanic singers and musicians, connecting cultures from around the world.

Studio Tenn’s A Christmas Carol, December 2013 /// Teachers often request titles that depict literature studied in their classrooms. Next year, that title is A Christmas Carol, a creative staging of the Dickens classic from the Franklin-based theatre company.

Schedule subject to change.

leO, March 2014 /// You’ve heard about the emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in education? Here’s an incredible show from Y2D Productions that leaves a lasting impression in just those subject areas. Students watch enthralled as an ordinary man seems to defy gravity. High tech video is projected in perfect harmony with physical theatre to create fun, mind-bending illusions.

Groups who attend TPAC Education performances represent students from pre-school through high school in public, private and home settings. To receive the full schedule to be announced in May, contact Cassie LaFevor at 615-687-4288 or [email protected].

TpaC is able to offer meaningful and personal encounters with works of performing and visual arts because of the generous financial support of our community. As a non-profit organization, TPAC relies on donor support to provide arts learning experiences for our children and professional development for their teachers. Get involved!

To us, this is a stepping stone.

www.lipscomb.edu

One might say in our walk of faith, we’ve been down many paths. But few as exciting as the one we’re on now. With hard hats and rolled sleeves, we’re building a university that will serve students in greater, more innovative ways than ever in our history. Two new health science buildings providing state-of-the-art facilities for nursing and pharmacy.

In just the past 24 months— 16 new graduate programs,

with more to come, that meet the

demands of today’s workforce in fields

such as information technology and biomolecular science. And almost 60 new faculty members to help us keep our stride. Watch us as we hammer out our future and take some exciting steps forward.

JERSEY BOYS @TPAC October 29 –November 3, 2013 Love the Jersey Boys soundtrack, and can’t wait to see it again. Oh, what a night, what a show. What’s your favorite song? WE WILL ROCK YOU @TPAC November 12-17, 2013 ?!?! Acting great Robert DeNiro is behind this high energy Queen revue – the latest rock musical hit in London & other European cities.

GHOST @TPAC February 25 – March 2, 2014 This spirited musical has a special effect on the audience – seriously supernatural, stage illusions like you’ve never seen before. SISTER ACT @TPAC March 11-16, 2014 Even the nuns you knew in the ’70s would say “Amen” to the music & comedy. Even the critics confess to lovin’ the show. MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET @TPAC May 6-11, 2014 You’re right there with Elvis, Johnny, Jerry Lee, & Carl for the greatest unplanned jam in recording history. So Memphis, so Nashville.

WAR HORSE @TPAC June 3-8, 2014 Easy to see why the story of a horse who goes to war won top awards in NYC & London. Most incredible life-size puppets since Lion King.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST @TPAC September 24-29, 2013 The tale as old as time is the perfect family show – stunning set, costumes, song & dance as the beauty casts her own spell on the beast.

I LOVE LUCY @TPAC January 14-26, 2014 You’ll love Lucy (plus Ricky, Fred & Ethel) even more when you experience a live taping of all-time favorite episodes. Hilarious.

Beth Smith of Nashville was waiting for the hour that tickets to The Lion King went on sale. She had marked her calendar. It was her birthday. So excited, she pulled over on the side of the road to purchase seats with her cell phone. An internet search for “TPAC Nashville Tennessee” led her to the site of an online scalper who crafted a web page that mimicked the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. She paid $1,200 for six tickets in the tier of Andrew Jackson Hall that never arrived. “What upsets me most is that they went to a lot of trouble to trick me. I’ve been to TPAC before. When I purchased the tickets I never knew that I was not on the TPAC web site,” said Smith, who contacted TPAC directly after a suspicious phone call. “A place called Goody Tickets told me there was a problem with my seat locations. They could not provide six tickets together in the same row. That just didn’t sound right.” It wasn’t right and Smith hoped that by sharing her story “I can help prevent this from happening to someone else.” She disputed the charge (and anticipates a credit, as other banking institutions have done for TPAC patrons in similar situations). Through TPAC, she purchased six tickets to The Lion King for $461 –about one-third the price of her original transaction. www.tpac.orgThe official online site for purchasing tickets to TPAC If you have an unfortunate experience with a secondary ticket seller—a.k.a. broker or scalper—contact [email protected] or call 615-782-4000.
