ClinicalSigns

Pyrexia, Anorexia,Excessive Salivationin Acute phase

(drooling ofsaliva)

*High fever(104-107 °F)Red patchesaround theeyes, mouthand nose andwith dischargeand Frothysaliva .*Four D’s:

*Watery andmucoiddischarge fromnostrils.

*A “streakyzone” at thejunction ofskin and hoof.

*Abortion,Premature births

*BVD can alsocause respiratorydisease,calledmucosaldisease(MD).

*IntermittentdiarrheaChronic bloat,Loss of bodyweight (WeakCalf Syndrome)Rough skin coat.

Initial clinicalsigns Depression Diarrhea Dyspnea High fever

*Catarrhalconjunctivitis &Rhinitis withmuco-purulentdischarge fromeyes andnose,Cornealopacity

GrossExamination

*Vesicles or blisterson Tongue (anterior2/3 dorsum of thetongue),Dentalpad,Gums,Cheek,Hard and softpalate,Lips,Muzzle,Coronarybands ,Teats, Udder, cornium of dewclawsand interdigitalspaces.

*TIGER HEART(grayish or yellowishstreaking in themyocardium -degeneration andnecrosis)

*Prominentlesions: aroundthe ileo-cecalvalve at thececo-colicjunction and inthe rectum.

*Zebrastriping-Streaks ofcongestionalong the foldsof mucosa

NERVOUS SYSTEM

Rabies Pseudo-rabies

BSE Scrapie Listeriosis GID

Host MostlyCanines

Cattle,swines

Cattle Sheep andGoat

Ruminants Sheep andrarely incattle

CausativeAgent

Lyssa viruses DNAherpesvirus

Prions Prions Listeriamonocytogenes

Taeniamulticeps(tape worm)

ClinicalSigns

The clinicalsymptomsusuallyappear in oneof two forms:the"DUMB"andthe"FURIOUS"

*"FURIOUS"form(mad-dogsyndrome)Biting andslashing atany movingobject.

*In theDUMB formprofusesalivationand inabilityto swallow.

*Paralysismay followeither the"furious" or"dumb" stageof the disease

In general, signs of CNSdiseaseFever(41-42°C),anorexia, andweight loss.Sneezing anddysponea arefrequentlyseen.

*Mostcommon —apprehensionpelvic limbataxia, andhyperesthesiato touch andsound.

*Generalizedweakness—falling and

recumbencyPruritis, seenin scrapie,but not veryprominentsign.

*Sheep maylead or trailthe rest of theflock

*Sheep mayhave a stargazingappearance.

*Rubbing orscrapingagainst fixedobjects,

*Nibbling, can often beelicited bypalpation ofthe lumbarregion

*Loss ofwool,particularlyover thelateralthorax, flanksandhindquarters.Hyperesthesia.

*Polydipsiaand polyuria

*Encephalitisormeningoencephalitis,Septicemiawith focalhepaticnecrosis,Abortion.

*Headpressing,Facialparalysis,Profusesalivation,animalcircles in onedirectiononly.

*BlindnessMusculartremor andin-coordination

*Excitabilityand collapse,Headpressing,Incompleteparalysis

GrossExamination

Sphericalcytoplasmicinclusionbodies calledNegribodies,present inHippocampus region.

Serousrhinitis,Pulmonaryedema,Necrotic focion liver.Non-suppurativemeningoencephalitis nadNecrotictonsillitis.

Spongiformencephalopathy.vacuolationof graymatterneuropil(spongiosis)and neurons,similar to thelesions seenin scrapie.

Similar toBSE.

Malacia ofmedulla andpons,cloudiness of CSF,Necrosis inthe liver,spleen,endocardium,myocardium.

*Thin walledcyst in thebrain

*Lesion inthe lumbarregion andrarely, in thecervical areaof the spine
