Requirements

The Discovery Canyon Physical Education staff

is proud to make physical education a part of

our community. It is only with the community

support that we are able to teach children

about the benefits of a variety of lifelong

physical activities. Our instruction tends to be

skill based and students are expected to

participate in vigorous activity to the best of

their ability.

Philosophy

If a “mind” is a terrible thing to

waste, it is also true that the “body”

is a terrible thing to waste! A healthy

body will enable us to have a healthy

mind. The promotion of a well-

rounded life style is necessary for a

positive functioning individual in

today’s society.

Causes of Childhood Obesity American Obesity Association 2006

• Physical activity - Lack of regular exercise

• Sedentary Behavior – High frequency of television

viewing, computer usage, and similar behavior

• Eating Habits – Over consumption of high-calorie

foods. Some eating patterns that have been

associated with this behavior are eating when not

hungry, eating while watching TV or doing homework.

• Environment – Some factors are over exposure to

advertising of food that promote high-calorie foods

and lack of recreational facilities.

• Genetics – Greater risk of obesity has been found in

children of obese and overweight parents.

The Brain

•Cognitive performance is improved by

aerobic activity, which increases the

number of capillaries in the brain.

• Physical activity increases the function

of the cerebellum, which is now thought

to control spatial learning, associative

skills, and language processing.

• While children are moving the brain

preserves the synaptic connections that

are most used.

• Statistical analysis indicates that there is a distinct

and linear correlation between students academic

and fitness scores.

• Students achieve best when they are physically fit.

• The relationship between academic achievement

and fitness was greater in mathematical than in

reading particularly at higher fitness levels.

• Females demonstrated higher achievement

particularly at higher fitness levels.

Dress Code

Discovery Canyon P.E. T-shirt and black shorts with at

least a 6” in seam are required. In cold weather

sweatshirts and sweatpants may be worn. Socks and

tennis shoes (No skater shoes) that can be properly

laced are a must for safety purposes. No school issued

practice gear or team uniforms are allowed to be worn

during class.

Class Expectations

• Be on time! When the tardy bell rings, you

should be in the locker room. Five minutes after

that you should be changed and waiting in the

gym.

• When you hear the whistle, it is time to “squad up”.

• There should be no loitering or horseplay in the

locker rooms.

• After class you will have five minutes to change back into

your school clothes.

• You will wait at the bottom of the stairs behind the black

line in the gym until released .

Units

Most of our units will consist of two week long

introductions that will hopefully motivate our

students to further discover the benefits of exploring

each unit to a greater depth. Our goal is to give a

broad overview and experience into as many sports

and activities as possible. Units may include, but are

not limited to the following:

Grading

Grades are based primarily upon the student’s ability to

follow behavioral guidelines (which include effort and

preparation – see rubric below), as well as the student’s

performance of various physical skills. Skills will be graded

on a weekly (per unit) basis using the following rubric:

Skill: 5 – Fully attempts/achieves the purpose of the

task/activity

4 – Nearly attempts/achieves the purpose of the

task/activity

3 – Average attempt at task/activity

2 – Below average attempt at task/activity

1 – Minimal effort towards task/activity

0 – Fails to achieve purpose of the task/activity

Effort:

2 – Substantial, proficient at skill and/or knowledge

of an activity – actively participating

1 – Minimal attempt at skill of activity - minimal participation

0 – No attempt/unacceptable – standing around, no effort

Colorado State Standards for Health in Middle School

Colorado has adopted State Standards for Health in Middle School The past 2 years we met as a District 20 committee reviewing the

Standards and developing a Health Curriculum The Health Curriculum began implementation school year – 2012-

2013 The Health Curriculum has been built in ALEC

Students will access the Health Curriculum through ALEC Assignments – an article, Power point, video A quiz will accompany each assignment that is also accessed

in ALEC Accessing ALEC

It is our goal as a Physical Education Department to have your student up and moving as much as possible

Grading for ALEC

Each ALEC Health quiz is worth 10 points When a student does not finish their

assignment in the allotted time period and has to go to the homework lab to complete the assignment, that student will not receive their daily points for that week.

IB Rubric Grading Occasionally students will be graded

according to the IB rubrics. IB rubric grades will be posted in Infinite

Campus, but the grades do not affect the overall grade of your student(s)

The posted grades are to let you see if your student was purely graded on an IB rubric where they would stand.

IB rubrics may be seen in each grade level web site.

Locker Room Rules

No changing lockers or locks!

• Your assigned locker & lock are

your responsibility – if lost you

must pay for a new one.

• Please keep tape on the lock, if

misplaced it helps us know who it

Order Form Parent/Student Information:

No matter how you choose to pay for the P.E. Uniform, please fill out the entire form and return it to

your child’s P.E. Teacher, so that we have documentation of purchases and can ensure that your

student(s) receive(s) the proper order.

* With regards to P.E. shorts you may choose to purchase Discovery Canyon’s or your own. The

requirement is that they be 90% black and that the inseam is at least 6” in length.

Proper shoes are a MUST – no skater shoes. They fall off easily and other students can get hit and

injured. A cheap pair from WalMart or Target work well for your student’s P.E. needs.

This fee may be paid using cash, check, or via the PayForIt system. If paying by cash or check, please

have your student bring the payment to class in a sealed envelope with both the teacher and student

names written on the front. Make checks payable to DCC. If paying by check, please also write your

student’s name and ‘DCC’ on the check memo line. The PayForIt system is an online system that allows

payment via credit card and electronic check. In PayForIt, fees may be viewed, selected, and paid for

through the “Activities” tab. Instructions for utilizing the PayForIt system are found online at

(www.payforit.net) Please note that there is a 2.5% convenience fee for using the PayForIt system.
