There’s plenty to keep you interested and inspired amongst this month’s varied range of articles. In Community Matters, you can see the winners of the Town Council’s ‘Citizen of the Year’ awards, and read the amazing stories behind their nominations. We also have updates on the progress of two exciting annual events –

the Whittlesey festival and the Christmas Extravaganza – both of which, as you will see, are the result of year-long hard work and dedication from a committed band of volunteers.

In the history page, there’s a brilliant article by Phil Gray on the life of his mother, Doris, who many readers will remember fondly from her time as a shopkeeper in Market Street. It offers a fascinating look at local life over the last century, and makes for a very interesting read.

Nikita and all her staff would like to welcome you to Jo Jo’s tea room 12 high Causeway, Whittlesey

the business, which nikita runs with help from her mother and sister, recently moved from smaller premises in broad street. the new shop (which was previously home to tLc) opened its doors in May, following three months of hard work by nikita’s husband nicholas to transform it.Combining homemade café food with the style of a traditional tea room, nikita feels Jo Jo’s offers something different to other local businesses.

“I wanted to create a café with a different feel; somewhere offering good, local food at a reasonable price, but with a unique atmosphere.”

Jo Jo’s provides just that, with a comprehensive menu that caters for all ages. Especially popular with children are the ice cream milkshakes, and children’s afternoon tea is also available. recognising the importance of supporting local businesses, nikita sources her meat, fruit and veg from other Whittlesey shops.

no sooner has her Majesty the Queen finished sending her thank-you letters, after having celebrated her ninetieth birthday on april 21st, than the nation is now bracing itself for her “official birthday”, this year on saturday June 11th, (one day after the Duke of edinburgh’s 95th birthday – his ‘real’, and only, one!) So why should the dear old lady be getting two lots of presents, cake and cards, when some of us, (especially us Capricorns with our birthday within a day or two of Christmas) have sometimes struggled to get remembered at all? (Cue… violins!)

It is a tradition that was started by King George II in 1748, and one which owes its origins to the ageless problem of the British weather. George was born in november, and felt the weather would be too cold at that time of year for his annual birthday parade. So instead, he combined his

birthday celebration with an annual spring military parade, known as ‘Trooping the Colour’, in which regiments displayed their flags or ‘colours’ so soldiers would be familiar with them. This, it was hoped, would benefit from taking place in brilliant, early summer sunshine.

The tradition has continued to this day. all British sovereigns have been given the option of having an ‘official’ birthday and, because the Queen's ‘real’ birthday is on april 21st, she has stuck with the tradition of celebrating hers in June. During the early part of her reign, her official birthday was on a Thursday, but, after seven years, it was changed to a Saturday, so that more members of the public could enjoy it.

So the real reason why her Majesty has two birthdays? our unpredictable British weather and tourism!

So Why Does

the Queen

Have Two Birthdays?

June 1, 1926 - Marilyn Monroe was born in Los Angeles (as Norma Jean Mortensen). Following an unstable childhood, spent in foster homes and orphanages, she entered the glamorous world of the movies, becoming an iconic fi gure, but sadly died at the age of thirty-six.

June 4, 1989 - The Chinese government ordered its troops to open fi re on unarmed pro-democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The Chinese government later claimed only 300 died in the attack. U.S. estimates put the toll at over 3,000. Following the massacre, over 1,600 demonstrators were rounded up and jailed, with 27 being executed.

June 5, 1783 - The fi rst sustained fl ight occurred, as a hot-air balloon was launched at Annonay, France, by brothers Joseph and Jacques Montgolfi er. Their 33-foot-diameter globe aerostatique ascended about 6,000 feet. In September, they repeated the experiment for King Louis XVI, using a sheep, rooster and duck as the balloon’s passengers.

June 6, 1944 - D-Day, the largest amphibious landing in history, began in the early-morning hours, as Allied forces landed in Normandy, France. British and Canadian troops came ashore on Gold, Juno and Sword beaches, whilst American forces landed on Utah and Omaha. By nightfall, 150,000 Allied soldiers and their accompanying vehicles had landed, with 15,000 killed and wounded.

June 14, 1951 - Univac 1, the world’s fi rst commercial electronic computer, was unveiled in Philadelphia.

June 14, 1864 - German psychiatrist and pathologist, Alois Alzheimer, was born. In 1907, he published an article, fi rst describing ‘Alzheimers’, a degenerative disease, affecting nerve cells of the brain and leading to severe memory impairment and progressive loss of mental faculties.

June 15, 1215 - King John set his seal to Magna Carta, the fi rst charter of British liberties, guaranteeing basic rights that have since become the foundation of modern democracies around the world.

June 16, 1963 - Valentina Tereshkova, 26, became the fi rst woman in space, as her Soviet spacecraft, Vostok 6, took off from the Tyuratam launch site. She manually controlled the spacecraft, completing 48 orbits in 71 hours, before landing safely.

June 18, 1815 - On the fi elds near Waterloo in central Belgium, 72,000 French troops, led by Napoleon, suffered a crushing military defeat from a combined Allied army of 113,000 British, Dutch, Belgian, and Prussian troops, ending 23 years of warfare between France and the other powers of Europe.

June 28, 1914 - Archduke Francis Ferdinand, Crown Prince of Austria and his wife were assassinated at Sarajevo, touching off a confl ict between the Austro-Hungarian government and Serbia that escalated into World War I.

June 28, 1919 - The signing of the Treaty of Versailles formally ended World War I.

the Festival on sunday 11th september promises to have something for all the family, no matter what age you are.

Every year, organisers aim to keep the cost of the rides and amusements down to a minimum – with no charge at all in many cases - meaning that families can have an enjoyable time without a huge expense. It’s an immense pleasure to see the smiles on the children’s faces, and hear their shrieks of delight. There are fairground rides, a bouncy slide, climbing walls, a Gladiator challenge, pony rides, chair-planes, bungees, and lots more.

Test out your sporting skills on the football ‘Speedcage’, or for a more leisurely activity, why not play a round of Crazy Golf? another firm favourite with children and adults alike are the puppet shows, performed from the Whittlesey Christian Church marquee on the Market Square, as well as free face painting. for those who enjoy traditional puppets, there is also a Punch and Judy show.

Enjoy a stroll along Broad Street and Market Street to enjoy the huge display of over one hundred classic vehicles; continuing this theme is the vintage fire engine, which is guaranteed to take us down Memory Lane.

further along Broad Street is the Schools art Exhibition, featuring a display of arts and crafts by students from all the local schools. We know you’ll be amazed at the range of young artistic talent we have in our community, so do pop in and see for yourself.

Lining the streets and areas surrounding the Market Square will be numerous stalls, and music and dance displays of all types and styles, to entertain you throughout the day - so remember to keep the date free in your calendar!

april saw the annual presentation of the ‘citizen of the Year’ awards by whittlesey town council, in recognition of those who have made an outstanding contribution to the local community.

If we were to name several local events or organisations – the Straw Bear, the Tour of the fens Cycle race, the Lions Christmas float, Whittlesey in Bloom, and the Whittlesey Christmas lights – they all have one thing in common: Mr. richard exton. richard is always there in the background, looking after events in his caring and helpful manner. for this reason, he was the worthy winner of the 2016 ‘Citizen of the Year’ award.

This year’s ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ was awarded to bethany Mepham, whose help and volunteering aid, both in Whittlesey and Peterborough, is always gratefully received. Bethany also acts as a mentor to younger students, and is always on hand to help fellow pupils in any way possible.

as a result of the close marking, councillors decided to present a Special Merit award to the runners up, one of whom was Jared walton. Jared has raised money by some very imaginative means, including a very persuasive conversation with teachers, which managed to raise a large sum of money for ‘Defibrillators for All’.

a Special Merit award was also given to Millie cousins, a pupil at Park Lane School. after weeks of fundraising for The Little Princess Trust, Year Six pupil Millie had her long ponytail cut off in front of

her whole school. Millie managed to raise enough money to make three wigs for children suffering through cancer treatment, smashing her original of target of £350, enough to make one.

finally, also the recipient of a Special Merit award was alex McFarland, from alderman Jacobs School. alex has shown enormous courage throughout his years at primary school, managing all the difficulties that have arisen. he is incredibly bright, very polite, and has

great musical ability, and the committee at the Town Council felt that his development should be recognised with an award.

hello one and all, i start this article with some crime prevention advice, and a warning to the local community. although whittlesey is a relatively low crime area, there are steps you can take to protect your property, and avoid being a victim of crime.

We have seen an alarming number of people leaving their vehicles unlocked overnight, with expensive valuables inside. Please don’t assume your car is safe if parked on your driveway, or outside your home. Thieves are very opportunistic, and it literally takes seconds to enter an insecure car, remove the valuables, and leave. Please, please, please lock your cars and garages, and avoid being a target for theft.

We have asked our neighbourhood Watch colleagues to pass this message on, and also the local schools to send out letters to parents, reminding

them to lock their cars. If you see anything suspicious, please contact the police immediately. It may be that you won’t automatically be updated, but any relevant information is acted upon, and could provide the vital difference between catching and convicting perpetrators.

Can I also remind everyone that high Causeway is a pedestrian zone at all times, with no waiting between 10am and 4pm (there is no loading or unloading during this time). We receive a lot of complaints from the public about this. Please don’t get caught out, and use the free parking that is provided around the town centre.

until the next issue, keep safe.

anglers nationwide will be eagerly awaiting the start of the new coarse fishing season on June 16th. we have some fantastic waters right on our doorstep here in whittlesey, and the fen drains are renowned for quality bream fishing.

Pre-baiting is the key to success, along with a bit of elbow grease in the form of raking out your chosen peg. after you’ve cleared a swim, feed it up with plenty of groundbait, laced with sweetcorn, casters and worms. If you’re a river man, the north Bank of the Nene is usually worth a try in the first few weeks of the season, especially if you’re after bream. The lock end is the best bet for some big catches. The north Bank is also renowned for big carp these days; not easy to locate, but well worth catching. heavy feed and boilies should tempt them.

Local stillwaters such as Kingsland, railway and Decoy Lakes have all produced cracking action recently. There are some really big fish in the deep water pool at the Railway Lakes, and floating baits work really well there. East Delph Lakes now holds some very big carp, and don’t forget to try northey Park fishery and float fish farm fishery, which are both quality waters at this time of year. float fish farm fishery is particularly good for youngsters, and they are made more than welcome. The Kingfisher Pool is full of small fish - great for whip fishing, or perhaps a rod and line approach with maggot. a recent trip saw me and my ten-year-old grandson fishing the Wagtail Pool, where a feeder approach tends to work best.

If you are heading for the fenland drains, or perhaps the north Bank, then don’t forget to purchase a rod licence before you fish. On Whittlesey aa controlled waters you will need a day ticket, or better still, get yourself a club handbook.

This house is part of The Sick Children’s Trust, which

cares for children and their families whilst the child

is undergoing treatment in hospital. Benjamin, the youngest member of our four church congregations,

is undergoing treatment for cancer. This requires extensive periods of stay in Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Acorn House means that his parents can stay close

to him. Acorn House opened in 2000 and helps approximately 440 families every year. Situated within the hospital grounds, Acorn House is only minutes away from the wards and has been specially

designed to ensure access for those with disabilities.

Acorn House is open 365 days a year and can accommodate fifteen families a night. Rooms are allocated to families on a priority basis, and are offered completely free of charge. It is funded solely

by voluntary donations from individuals, companies

and charitable trusts. The cost of staffing and maintaining Acorn House amounts to approximately

£80,000 a year.

Acorn House has fifteen private family bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a communal dining area, a well-stocked playroom, a

shared living room and quiet room and full laundry

facilities. There are also direct telephone lines in all of the family bedrooms linking them to the hospital wards,

so that families can be contacted immediately in the

event of an emergency. Some of the funds we raise will be going to provide

toys and equipment for use on Benjamin’s ward. If you feel you can help by making a donation, either pass it to Nigel or Gill, or someone you know

who goes to one of our parish churches. Please keep this project in your prayers. We wish you a prayerful Advent and a Blessed and

Happy Christmas.Revd Nigel and Revd Gill.

During Advent and over Christmas this year our congregations are

going to be raising funds to support the work of Acorn House.

After a week of heavy rain, conditions were poor and the soggy wet banks were difficult in places. Many were unsure just how the drains would perform on the day; however, the unpredictable Glassmore Bank proved to be in very good form. Winner Chris Wade got off to a blistering start. June MEETInG of ThE whittLeseY business ForuMDo join us on wednesday June 29th for our regular Forum meeting. we have a new venue, the Falcon hotel, London street, whittlesey.Come along at 6pm to allow time for networking. I’m pleased to say we have as our guest speaker, Jim Saunders of hugh Crane Ltd., the cleaning equipment and supplies business based in Station road, Whittlesey - a local success story.Don’t forget, if you wish to nominate a company for the fenland Enterprise awards, entries must be submitted before July 6th. See you all on the 29th.steve hodson Forum Chair (Tel: 01733 203064)

in late March, interested local residents met with representatives of the town and District councils, and agreed to form a community-led mud walls action group.

The aim of the Mud Walls Group is to document, preserve and protect the historic mud walls found in Whittlesey and Eastrea. These rare walls – as unique to

the area as the Straw Bear - are disappearing fast; in 1981 there were more than forty in Whittlesey, but now there are as few as sixteen fragments left.

The Mud Walls Group can be contacted directly on facebook, or by email to Whittlesey Museum ([email protected]). all are welcome to attend

meetings, or be kept up to date with proceedings by email. The first meeting of the group was held in mid-april, and further meetings should follow regularly.

It is hoped that group members will receive training in mud wall repair, so that they can then share these skills with local wall owners.

new action Group formed to Protect Mud walls

Thank Youon behaLF oF the PaGe FaMiLY

we would like to thank everyone who attended the service for Mac.

our thanks also go to everybody for the lovely cards and flowers we received. We’d like to say a special thank-you to Kevin Bending for the service on the day, and h.E. Bull and Sons of Whittlesey,

for the excellent service they provided during our sad time. The collection on the day made £555, which was donated to Sudbury Court. Please accept this as our acknowledgment.

Words from our Local MP steve barclayFeedback from local head teachers suggested that we should focus more on improving literacy of children and even adults, if we are going to unlock their undoubted potential. i have therefore been working with the bishop of ely, local schools and the local press to raise the profile of literacy.

Many children fail to make progress during the summer holiday, and so I am launching a community initiative to give every Year 4 pupil in our thirty-four primary schools their own book to read over the summer, together with a library membership slip, enabling them to complete the reading agency’s Summer reading Challenge. This involves reading a number of short books over the summer, qualifying them for a prize.

The aim of the initiative is to build on what many people do at Christmas, when they buy an extra present for those who may not be visited by father Christmas. We would like you to visit my website below, purchase a book from the list, and deliver it to my office. The donated books will then be distributed to children across the region. You can even pick which school will receive your donation; simply enter my office as a delivery address, but replace my name with the school name.

for adults, local libraries will also be running the reading ahead challenge, which they can complete alongside their children, and involves reading six short books and magazines.

I hope that constituents will join us to enable some children to own their very first book. 1,215 books will allow us to give every child in Year 4 a new book and, should we receive more, we will be able to roll it out to further year groups.

For those who wish to take part, please see my website for further details: http://stevebarclay.net/.

The Whittlesey extravaganza committeewhilst we hope that the sun is currently shining, a committed band are busy organising the christmas extravaganza for Friday December 9th 2016.

as ever, it is our determined hope to provide a family-centred evening of festive fun. The work really does go on throughout the year, including booking the assorted acts, and filling in numerous, enormous forms!

We, the Committee, are all volunteers, who in the main part have full-time jobs or businesses. We continue to organise this event each year because we want to give local people a little fun for Christmas. It began as a thank-you from the members of the original Business forum, and since that group’s closure, some of the members have joined with a few other willing souls to continue the work.

however, we do really need more people to join us and help spread the load. If you don’t want to commit to a committee, how about just volunteering as a steward for the evening? If you are interested, please contact either roger Brown, our Chairman, on 01733 202884, or Shirley Wright, the Secretary, on 01733 203279.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Whittlesey Museum celebrates 40 Yearswhittlesey Museum celebrated its fortieth anniversary in May 2016.

The Museum was originally set up in 1976 as an offshoot of the Whittlesey Society, although it now operates as an independent trust, run by volunteers. The museum’s mission is to collect, care for and interpret the natural and cultural heritage of the Whittlesey area, for the benefit and enjoyment of students, local people and visitors; it contains six galleries of local and social history, including a replica blacksmith's forge.

Over its forty-year history, the Museum has expanded to fill the ground floor and yard of the Old Town Hall, in Market Street. The most recent changes have come about since the arrival of Curator Jen Barback in 2014, who has been overseeing a rearrangement project to freshen up the displays, and eventually open up more museum rooms to the public.

The Museum is also looking for enthusiastic volunteers who would like to join the Board of Trustees, and help to shape the future direction of the museum - for further information, please email the Curator at [email protected], or drop in and pick up a leaflet.

opening times are: friday: 2.30-4.30pm, Saturday: 10am-noon, Sunday: 2.30-4.30pm.

council clamps Down on Illegal Motoriststhe section of the Green wheel from the ‘Field of Dreams’ at stonald road, to Funthams Lane, near to the Millennium bridge, is a public footpath and cycle way.

although there is legal authority to drive from Stonald road to the football pitches, the cycle way past this point does not have such authority. however, several motorists continue to flout these rules, and Whittlesey Town Council, along with other agencies, are determined to stop this.

Vehicles requiring access to land, or to the boats moored on the river nene, should use the legal access along funthams Lane. The Council recognises that this is in poor condition, and so have decided that before any action is enforced, funthams Lane has to be improved. We are currently making progress in achieving this.

recently some new signs were supplied by Sustrans, and erected by Cambs County Council on april 12th. unfortunately, sometime between april 28th and May 1st, these signs were illegally removed by some mindless individual, and stolen. This was not a spur of the moment act, as the perpetrator had to go equipped with ladder and tools. We are appalled by this act, which is an affront to everyone who wants to enjoy our countryside in a safe manner.

This has not deterred us, but simply made us more determined in our aim to make sure that this cycle way is a safe and traffic-free area for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders.

Make sure the bedding is well-watered in, and keep moist during dry weather. Feed regularly with a high potash feed, as this makes flowers brighter in colour and longer-lasting.for best results, keep roses sprayed with a fungicide to help keep black spot and mildew at bay. Spray every two weeks for best results, as prevention is better than cure; also be on the lookout for aphids, as these spread unwanted diseases. use a good insecticide, which are best sprayed in the evening so as not to harm beneficial insects like bees. Roses are very hungry feeders, so feed regularly with a quality feed. foliar feeds work quicker than a top dressing.

Vegetablesat the end of the month, plant out brassicas such as Brussels sprouts, winter cabbages, sprouting broccoli, and cauliflowers, and grow short-term

crops, such as lettuces and radishes, between them to maximize the space. Carrots, lettuces, salad leaves, and radishes can be direct-sown this month. Sow little and often to keep things fresh to harvest, and so you don’t over crop.

french and runner bean plants can be planted best using eight-foot canes in rows or wigwams. There are some very good new varieties available now that are self-fertile and stingless, giving very good yields and excellent flavour. Mulch with grass clippings or compost to help retain moisture, and keep well-watered in dry periods.

outdoor tomatoes can be planted either in the ground or in growbags, or in pots with a mixture of 50% multipurpose compost and 50% garden soil. This can give a better flavour than growbags. feed with a high potash feed to promote correct ripening, without blotches, thin skin, and with a sweet juicy flavour.

hopeful that the frosts are all now behind us, marrows, courgettes, pumpkins, squashes and sweetcorn can all be planted out now. These all like plenty of water and regular feeding.

blooming Great!amanda rawlings followed her lifetime dream and took over Dawson’s flower shop in February of this year. Previously to this, she had been working at Peterborough City hospital as a phlebotomist.

Amanda trained as a florist when she finished school, and after deciding to start a family, she took a part time job at the hospital, where she stayed for some seventeen and a half years.

When Dawson’s became available she finally took the plunge, and hasn’t looked back.

amanda said, “The local support has been amazing – I’ve had lots of positive feedback on the changes to the shop, and customers have commented that the cut of the flowers and plants is second to none.”

amanda is very lucky to work with Bridgett (her right hand lady), and together they strive to become Whittlesey’s premier florist, providing exciting ideas and personal service with a smile, at a price to suit every pocket.

Reverend Nigel

| A Moment with Reverend Nigelwhere can i get married? Many people like to marry in their local parish church. You can also marry in a church if you are on that church's electoral roll.

however, we know that you might like to marry in a different church because it has special significance for you, through family or other special connections. an engaged couple can now do just that, if either of you can show just one of the following seven connections with the parish.

that one of you:

• was baptised in the parish concerned

• was prepared for confirmation in the parish

• has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least six months

• has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church, for a period of at least six months

that one of your parents, at any time after you were born:

• has lived in the parish for a period of at least six months

• has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church, for a period of at least six months

that one of your parents or grandparents:

• was married in the parish

In all cases involving church services - i.e. going to normal church services, baptism, confirmation or marriage - this applies only to Church of England services. Even if you cannot demonstrate any of the above connections, we want to help you explore whether it may still be possible for you to marry in your special church.

It is also possible for you to be able to marry in the parish church if you are divorced.

The important message here is to talk to me about your plans, and we can discuss the options open to you.

God bless and keep you

Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Whittlesea, Coates & Eastrea areas and manager Mark Sherwood

agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

whittlesey Manor bowls club have a new shirt sponsor in taG industries, a recycling and waste management company with a local site at the saxon works, in king’s Dyke.

Company owner Sam Cowan (kneeling, left) travelled down from Yorkshire to officially present the new shirts to club president Martin Welsford, before the club’s annual match against a team representing the northants Bowling federation.

The club, who are on the look-out for new members, wear the shirts for all league and cup matches, county and national competitions.

whittlesey warriors netball club has grown and grown since forming back in september 2010. never did we think we would be where we are today, back then!

We now have twenty-six senior members, and forty-three junior members from years Seven to Eleven. all teams now play regularly in the Wisbech netball league, with three senior teams (one in each of the three divisions) playing on a Wednesday evening. our juniors play their games on a Sunday morning, and we have two under-13 teams, and two under-16 teams, all of which are doing very well.

as a club, we have been fundraising for new kit, and have now managed to kit out our club from Year Eight upwards with netball dresses - we all look brilliant on court! We must thank ady at hereward Sports and Leisure for his help in getting all our kit needs sorted.

We continue to be supported by wonderful people who go above and beyond for our club, and with their help, we have achieved so much, and will continue to achieve more in the future…

The group meets at Scaldgate on the first and third Wednesday of each month, from 1pm to 3pm. a small fee is charged to cover the hire of the room. We are a very friendly bunch, whose meetings include plenty of painting, drawing, mini-demonstrations, and chatter... along with a cup of tea or coffee! as we continue to commemorate centenary events of the First World War, two major conflicts are remembered this year. The Battle of the Somme took place from July 1st 1916 to november 18th 1916. There were 57,470 British casualties on the first day, including 19,240 killed. of the 430,000 British casualties suffered during the battle, a third perished. The Battle of Jutland, considered to be the only major naval battle of the war, was from May 31st until June 1st 1916. It was considered a British victory despite the loss of fourteen ships and over six thousand lives, and Germany losing only nine ships and over 2,500 lives.

We send our thanks and best wishes to the St. andrews Lodge, who recently gave us a cheque for £240 for the Poppy appeal. I was honoured and humbled at our last meeting when the branch presented me with a certificate from our county office, for twenty years of dedicated service to the RBL. My, how time flies!

whittlesey wind ensemble has been running for around three years, and continues to grow and develop. we have recently appointed a new Director of Music, stefen Dicks, and grown to twenty-five players - so more than an ensemble! we are currently considering a new name.

our young percussionist, Charlie Westbrook, has recently passed his Grade 8 exam with 100%, a fantastic result.

The band has received a couple of donations, which has been spent on new music. We will be

playing this music at our two June engagements: Wisbech armed forces Day, on the 19th, where a selection of military style music has been requested; and on the 26th, a concert on the green in ramsey abbey, with teas and cake provided by the local church.

safe Local trades supporting the work of age uk locallyit’s daunting enough having to make contact with a tradesman, let alone trust a stranger, to enter your home and carry out work or repairs. imagine being elderly, vulnerable and in some cases, living alone, and having to make that decision? that is why safe Local trades is delighted to support the work of age uk cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

over the past seven years, Safe Local Trades has raised over £33,000 for the cause, through the personal efforts of SLT director Eileen Le Voi, trade members, family and friends.

one of the most recent events was the hugely successful Insane Terrain challenge, which, to date, has raised around £2,075. helping to achieve that great total were hampton brother and sister, Sarah Copland and Simon Gooch – who have raised £686 in memory of their dad, John.

Sarah said: “Thank you to everyone who’s donated so far. We wanted to raise funds in memory of our cherished and hugely missed dad, John Gooch, who supported several charities including this one. It was great for us to get involved in this fantastic event, through the support of Safe Local Trades.”

Would you like to join Simon and Sarah, and do your bit for the charity? There is still time to sign up for a 13,000 ft tandem sky dive at Sibson Airfield – which takes place on Saturday July 9th.

and, if you raise £300 for charity, you will be “on cloud nine”, at receiving a free sky dive. Why not make it a team-building event and get your friends or work colleagues involved?

Or, if you prefer your feet on terra firma, why not sign up for the Perkins Great Eastern run half marathon (or fun run) on Sunday october 9th?

tanya’s life had become a snack attack! she found herself being rather sneaky around her family, as while she would go to the kitchen to make a cup of tea, she would find herself eating biscuits, cakes and anything else she could find.

after kidding herself that her snack attacks were normal, her weight was just creeping up, and she resigned herself to the belief that she was destined to be overweight forever. feeling scared and embarrassed when out clothes shopping, Tanya dreaded comments and thoughts from others, and did not like what she saw in the mirror.

She then knew that this time the weight needed to come off for good. Just like a lot of people, she had attended lots of different slimming groups, and always struggled to lose or even maintain her weight.

Tanya then decided to join a local slimming group. Feeling very nervous as she made the first step into the room, she knew there was no turning back. She soon came to feel very welcome and at ease in the group, and was looking forward to the week ahead.

Losing a fabulous 5.5lbs in her first week, Tanya realised how simple and easy the plan was - and all she needed to do was eat.

She started eating healthier, and more, food, and was never hungry. She swapped takeaways for home cooked meals, and breakfast would be a healthy option fry up. Loving food, Tanya no longer needed to hide in the kitchen for a snack attack.

The plan truly has changed the way she thinks about food choices. As well as feeling fitter in herself, her health is improving and she now has the energy to carry on enjoying life after eating a meal, instead of wanting a nap.

Her confidence is blooming, and now as Tanya continues with her weight loss journey, she wants to inspire and help others.

tanya is excited to become a slimming world consultant, and will be taking her own groups starting from tuesday June 21st at childers, station road, whittlesey, at 5:30 and 7:30pm. For more details please contact her on 07713596171.

our body’s blood system can be viewed as two inter-related systems. the arterial system takes blood to the cells and the venous system returns blood to the heart. the arteries have elastic walls and a progressively smaller diameter to ensure the blood can reach the furthest cell. the arteries sub-divide further into arterioles which have thin muscular walls, enabling the body to control their diameter and thus the amount of blood reaching the cells. this allows the blood system to meet the changing metabolic demands of the cells.

as the arterioles get closer to the cells, they too divide into smaller branches. These smaller branches no longer have muscular walls. Their walls are now thin and porous and small molecules can now pass through them to enable the exchange of nutrients and waste between the blood and cells respectively. These branches are called capillaries.

Each cell, dependent on its activity, will require and create different quantities of nutrients and waste respectively. one cell might only want some oxygen, whilst the adjoining cell could want sodium. So how does each cell get what it wants?

again the answer is simple and follows the principle of concentration gradients.

‘In a liquid or gaseous environment where there are no obstructions, material will flow from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration’ [please note: we have constructed this sentence from the original wording]

an everyday example of this principle can be seen if we allow men into a room through the right hand door only and women through the left

door. Initially, we will have a higher concentration of men on the right [of the room] and a higher concentration of females on the left. after thirty minutes, the room will be relatively evenly mixed, as both groups move towards the lower concentrated parts of the room.

The same is true between the capillaries and the cells. There will be a higher concentration of nutrients in the capillary and if one cell has used up its oxygen supply, it will have a lower concentration of oxygen than in the capillary. Therefore, the oxygen molecules within the capillary will be drawn towards the oxygen-deficient cell. Equally, the adjoining cell will draw sodium towards it and not oxygen. In this manner, every cell gets what it needs. This principle however only works over a very small distance; therefore, each capillary must be a maximum of one cell diameter away from its exchanging cell. We have thousands of millions of cells within our bodies and therefore we have thousands of millions of capillaries.

next month we will take a look at the venous system.

thanks also to street Pride, for their efforts in keeping whittlesey and the surrounding area free from the litter deposited by people who do not share our pride in the town.

In May, the Mayoress and I attended various local functions, one of which was organised by Whittlesey Lions, at St. Andrews Hall, and was a film-themed occasion. Whittlesey Lions, being a small group, were supported by other groups to make it a very enjoyable afternoon - well done ladies.

We also attended a band concert at Peterborough Cathedral. The band playing for the large audience was The anglian regimental Band. Despite being freezing - due to the heating being turned off, because of a false start to summer - a fabulous evening was had by all.

after two hot days, everyone was caught out when the weather turned cold again, and we were informed that it would take four days for the cathedral to reheat! Let’s hope the weather stays warm and sunny for the music concert, to be held on the Market Place, in June. Come along and enjoy yourselves; the music is free. A list of acts and times can be seen on flyers posted around town, and in the Council Offices. Don’t forget that the Councillors hold a Saturday morning surgery at the Council Offices. For dates and times, look on the WTC website, or on the notice board outside the office.regards, cllr alex Miscandlon Mayor of Whittlesey

Hi everybody, the first half of 2016 has disappeared very quickly, and as I write, summer seems to have arrived. The flowers that adorn our Town, courtesy of Whittlesey in Bloom, and local businesses, are starting to come into bloom, and are looking brilliant.

family from Whittlesey aim to honour Dad with 24 hour challengeafter the shock of suddenly losing their beloved father, a whittlesey family has set themselves the enormous challenge of climbing twenty-four Lake District peaks in twenty-four hours, at the end of May.

These include the highest point in England, Scafell Pike, and other well-known Lake District peaks, including Helvellyn, Fairfield and Bowfell. The challenge is being undertaken in memory of Philip Ingham, whose children Peter, Gemma and Christopher, along with son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Vicki, hope to raise £2000 to support the Pancreatic Cancer research fund.

Philip became unwell over Christmas and was later diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which had spread to his liver. unfortunately, he passed away seven weeks later after learning that the cancer was far more developed than initially thought.

Some 8,500 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year in the uK. Its survival rate – 3% - is the worst of any cancer, and has not improved in forty years. only 3% of those diagnosed live longer than five years, and only 1% live longer than ten years. Despite being the fifth most common cause of cancer deaths in the uK, pancreatic cancer receives less than 2% of the overall research funding.

Peter said, “Losing our father in the way we did was a massive shock, which all the family have struggled to come to terms with. We wanted to set ourselves a challenge to honour our father, and to raise awareness of this type of cancer.”

if you wish to sponsor the family, visit: www.justgiving.com/Gemma-barrie-2016. For further information about pancreatic cancer, visit: www.pcrf.org.uk

Medical Detection DogsMedical Detection Dogs is a charity that trains dogs to detect cancer, and also helps people who have potentially life-threatening illnesses to lead normal lives.

one of the events that the charity organises to raise money for its work in cancer detection is called ‘Canter for a Cure’. This is a sponsored horse ride – and very much a fun day out – with riders, and some of their horses, bedecked in pink, the colour we all associate with cancer charities. up until now, this event has only been held at an Equestrian Centre close to the charity’s training centre at Milton Keynes, but it has become so popular that the decision has been made to extend it to a two-day event.

The charity had the idea of holding similar events elsewhere, so that more people could take part, and so that some of the pressure could be taken off the oversubscribed Milton Keynes ride. following a chance discussion with an employee at Burghley house, Stamford, the charity was delighted to be invited to hold their sponsored ride there. This is an amazing opportunity for Medical Detection Dogs, and with the details now finalised, registration is open.

‘Canter for a Cure at Burghley’ will take place on Sunday July 17th, comprising a six-mile sponsored ride, beginning at 10am. numbers are limited, so early registration is advised. The charity would welcome volunteers to help out on the day, or to assist in its general work by fostering puppies in training. More information on the event, as well as the amazing work of the charity, can be found at www.medicaldetectiondogs.org.uk

of many highly successful charity fundraising projects run by Peterborough Male voice choir and Peterborough Voices in the last five years, sing for Life 2014 was one of the very best, involving over one hundred local women, raising thousands of pounds for charity, and featuring on itv anglia news!

This year, the project will once more be supporting Sue ryder’s Thorpe hall hospice, which celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary this year. having opened a fantastic new state-of-the-art facility last July, at a cost of £6m, the hospice needs to raise a staggering £7,500 a day just to cover running costs.

Launching in June, Sing for Life 2016 will engage forty local women in a twelve-week pop-up project, which will see them perform live on stage in a charity fundraising concert at Peterborough’s much-loved Broadway Theatre, in September.

absolutely no previous experience is needed, only a willingness to come along and get stuck in!

Jo Marriott, Senior hospice fundraiser at Thorpe hall says “We’re absolutely thrilled that Sing for Life will be supporting us once again. We look forward to following the progress of the project and to working together to fundraise for Thorpe Hall.”

Jo Cheung – who joined Sing for Life in 2012 – said of the project, “I’ve made some great friends doing something I love, and that I still find exhilarating, challenging, and utterly rewarding… long may it continue!”

For further information, call 01733 425194 or email [email protected].

introduction sessions will be at the broadway theatre, Peterborough on: Friday 24th June (7-9pm) saturday 25th June (10am-12pm)

Generous Donation to WYPCSthe whittlesey Young Peoples counselling service recently received an incredible donation of £3420, from bGL, in Peterborough.

This money will allow us to see ten young people. We have set up a ‘Just Giving’ page in order to raise another £3420; the address is www.crowdfunding. justgiving. com/louise-russell-1.

Meanwhile, the group has been busy drumming up support at the Whittlesey branch of norwich and Peterborough, which is donating to three nominated charities. The charity with the most votes will receive £500, while second and third place will receive £300 and £200.

regular prevention is essential to keep parasites off our pets, and out of our homes.

It's best to buy a prescription strength treatment from your vets, as this will be the best chance of actually treating the infestation. They are also safer for your pets than shop-bought brands. Most flea treatments should be given every four weeks (you should check this by asking your Vet) in order to help break the fleas’ life cycle, and stop them from breeding.

It’s sensible to treat your carpets and soft furnishings at home in the event of an incident of fleas on your pet, and you can buy safe and suitable products from your vet. Carpets and soft furnishings are where the fleas lay their eggs, and where the larvae grow. The larvae bury deep in to the furnishings, away from the light, where they pupate. They can lie dormant for weeks or even months before conditions are right for them to hatch. By this time, your pet’s flea treatment (if not used regularly) may have worn off, and there starts the cycle again.

Ticks are found in countryside and parkland, and are very happy breeding in the warm weather. female ticks can lay several thousand eggs at a time. They start very small, and are difficult to see on our pets until they start to feed, become engorged, and become large enough to be seen.

You may have seen in the media that a non-native tick has made its way to Britain, and with ticks being notoriously difficult to eradicate, is now thought to be here for good. This tick can give your pets a very nasty disease called Babesiosis, which if found requires urgent veterinary treatment. our native ticks are also capable of passing on various diseases, and it is therefore advisable to treat and prevent your pets from getting bitten in the first place.

With all this lovely weather, you may find that your pets are more likely to be affected with parasites. Parasites are finding it easier to breed, and in large numbers, with wild animals helping the spread of fleas and ticks, bringing them into our gardens and on to our pets.

Problem Tenants? What can landlords do about it?

Buying a residential property to rent out to tenants can be a good investment and a welcome source of extra income. However,

being a landlord may not always be plain sailing. If your tenants start to cause problems, for example by falling into rent arrears, or allowing the property to fall into disrepair, then you will want to take action to sort this out . You may decide that the best option is to require the tenants to give up possession of the property.

Firstly, you need to be aware that it is illegal to evict tenants without a Court Order.

Most residential tenancies are held on what is known as an “Assured Shorthold” basis. This means that during the fixed term of the tenancy, you cannot force the tenants to leave without the Court ordering them to vacate. However,

in certain circumstances, the Court can order the tenants to leave, even though the fixed term still has some time to run. This process involves serving the Household Act 1988 Notice on the tenants, notifying them of your intention to seek possession of the property and giving them two weeks or two months (depending on circumstances) to vacate (and settle any rental arrears). If they fail to do this then you can apply to the Court for a Possession Order.

Matters are simpler when the fixed term of the tenancy has expired, as a Notice requiring possession can be served at any time and there is no need for the tenants to be in default.

If you need help or advice with problem tenants give us a call.

| Local History

Many readers will remember, as children, buying sweets from Mrs. Gray’s shop in Market street, as they were making their way to the super cinema a little further down the street. Mrs. Gray died in october 2015 aged ninety-eight. here, her son Phil recalls the fascinating life of this fondly-remembered local lady.

REMEMBERING

Doris ada Gray was born on august 31st 1917 at Glassmoor bank, whittlesey. her mother was a cowling, from nearby Marriott’s Drove. through that line her huguenot ancestors, the Fovargues, can be traced back as living around whittlesey since 1654.

her father was Bertie Smith, whose family came from Snettisham, norfolk, to live at Warboys. his father travelled heavy horse stud stallions around the fen farms. Bertie, inheriting a wealth of equine knowledge, was employed as head horse-keeper on the farm where Doris was born.

In 1920, the Smiths moved across the river, and about two miles along the bank, to Micklewaite farm. There the family increased to six sisters, Doris being the second born. The three eldest girls attended angle Bridge School, which they reached by crossing the river by boat, and walking along the banks. In winter, their father would have to break the ice to release the boat. In those times, despite there being a hearth at one end of the school-room, and a turtle-stove in the middle, most of the pupils had to wear their overcoats to keep warm. one day the headmaster mustered

the whole school onto the playground to watch the great ill-fated airship, R101, fly over. The school-room was part of St Stephen’s Mission Church, so the girls went back at weekends for Sunday school. attendance was rewarded by an annual day at the seaside.

It was a happy childhood at Micklewaite; Doris would walk with her father when he was ploughing, or preparing the land for potato planting. She recalled leading the horse when they were hoeing sugar-beet. once, when they stopped, the horse stood on her foot - the soil was soft, so she wasn’t injured, but she couldn’t move until the horse did. There were memories of gleaning after harvest, polishing horse-brasses ready for the Whittlesey Show, and one exciting night when their father came in from feeding the horses, calling for the girls to come outside to see something they might never see again. Doris said, “It was a most wonderful sight, like coloured curtains hanging in the sky - the Northern Lights of course.” no light pollution in those days!

Doris left school at fourteen and worked on the farm for two years, before going into service as a maid, first at Moss’s butchers

She always enjoyed manning the gate at The Hermitage’s

annual summer ‘boot sale’. Her son teased her, saying

that she charged people 20p to

come in, but 50p to get out!

in Broad Street, and then for Mr. and Mrs. Lines at ‘hallcroft’ house, Church Street. Mr. Lines was proprietor of the Whittlesea Central Brick Company.

on Sundays, Doris worshiped at St Mary’s Church, and there met her husband to be, Donald Gray. They were engaged when she was twenty-one, and were married on September 7th 1939 – a week after the Second World War was declared. They lived with her in-laws above their shop in Market Street. Their eldest son, Philip, was born in 1941. When he was nine months old, his father was posted overseas, not returning until four years later. Duncan followed in 1946, and Jane appeared in 1949. By then, Don was running the family business, but sadly was crippled by polio in 1951. Eventually, he was employed by Perkins Engines, leaving Doris to take over the shop.

after Don died in 1979, Doris kept the shop open until she retired in 1981, bringing an end to sixty-three years of trading. her father-in-law, George henry Gray, opened the business in 1918 as a General Store, selling anything from hardware, crockery, toys, fruit and tobacco. at one time he was the sole agent for Wall’s ice cream in the town. Towards the end of trading, Doris was dealing mainly in sweets. She allocated one end of the counter for children to select their ‘four for a penny’,

while she served adults at the far end. It gave the children time to choose, without being hurried. Some never forgot that consideration.

on retirement, Doris lived in Churchfield Way, and helped at the St. Mary’s house Luncheon Club, making meals for ‘the old people’, some of whom were younger than she was! She was also one of the founding members of the Widows’ Contact Group, and enjoyed regular games of scrabble. Doris loved the young, and her seven grandchildren and six great grand-children gave her much joy. another pleasure was letter writing. her script was clear and steady to the last.

Doris rode her bicycle when well into her eighties, but began to find living alone was too much for her. In 2003, she moved into

The hermitage residential home, in St Mary’s Street, which was her happy home until she died. Doris was keen to go out for a walk most days, and enjoyed meeting friends for a chat, taking the mail to the Post Office, and other little jobs, which gave her a sense of purpose. She always enjoyed manning the gate at The hermitage’s annual summer ‘boot sale’. her son teased her, saying that she charged people 20p to come in, but 50p to get out! Doris was a fine lady, who throughout her long life always thought of others before herself.

| Finance by Eamonn Dorling

Do you know whether the UK should be in or out of the E.U? It’s a bit like discovering the

answer to: ‘The ultimate question of Life, The Universe and Everything is 42’. (“Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams).

I believe that all eligible voters should cast their vote on June 23rd, because by then you will have been introduced to information, opinion, statistics and, (dare I say), misleading information - we have the opportunity to make a decision.

My point is that whatever the decision, we will return to normality on the following day. To most people, the financial impact of either decision will be less significant than the impact on financial matters that you do have control over:

• You could have financial security if things go wrong (e.g. death, sickness, injury or unemployment). • You could reduce the impact of taxation. • You could create an effective cash-flow budget. • You could ensure there is enough income in later life to enjoy a long retirement. • You could preserve the value of your estate to ensure your chosen beneficiaries make the best use of it.

Whether we are in or out of the EU cannot address any of these matters for an individual family. The financial impact of things that you can control is potentially much greater.

As the late Robin Williams used to say in one of his routines: “I make all the important decisions like whether we should invade a country, or whether the central bank should change interest rates; my wife makes all the smaller decisions like where we live, which schools the children go to, what we eat...” I see a parallel here!

Take advice from an independent financial adviser.

this month’s focus is on the growing problem of ‘self-harm’. i appreciate an article of this length cannot possibly go into every detail, but if i can inspire just one person to pick up the phone and arrange to talk, it will be worth it. i can guarantee three things: firstly, you will not have to wait long to be seen; secondly, everything will be held in the strictest confidence; and finally, you will be given whatever time and understanding is necessary.

figures published in 2014 suggest a 70% increase over the previous two years, of 10-14 year olds attending a&E for self-harm related reasons. It would, however, be wrong to assume that this is an exclusively teenage problem.

The greatest danger with self-harming is not the act itself, but the fear or embarrassment of admitting to it. family or friends will avoid talking about it because they don’t know how to handle it, creating an awkwardness that drives self-harmers to feel even more isolated. The longer this continues, the harder it becomes to escape the treadmill of low self-esteem.

Is it possible for someone immersed in the world of self-harming to ever rise above it and cope with life? Yes, of course it is. In fact, it is possible to not just ‘cope with life’, but to actually leave that life behind for good.

Your first step is to take a fresh look at yourself, long enough to see the real, stronger person inside. Then look for someone you truly feel comfortable speaking with, who will give you the space to really share what’s going on inside, without judging you; someone who is happy to go at a pace you are comfortable with, while at the same time caringly encouraging you to take on new challenges.

You have nothing to fear, except the fear that stops you doing something constructive. Gather courage to believe that if you can dream it, you can achieve it. Then, with the right kind of help, let nothing stand in your way to making it a reality.

on tuesday april 19th, children at alderman Jacobs school were entertained and inspired by a visiting published author - the second published author to visit the school this year!

Eamonn reilly, who has published over twenty books, shared his insights and tips for writing in a truly engaging fashion. During the visit, children were set writing tasks, and given tips to help them to edit, improve and extend their writing. Children were delighted that he also attended the school for a book signing.

a Year five boy commented that although he is often a reluctant home reader, he was so inspired and interested in Eamonn, that he couldn’t wait to read his books. another boy in Year Two exclaimed that he was buying the book The Children’s Lottery. “I have a list of exciting things I would buy and do if I won the Lottery, so I want to see what the little boy in the book does.”

The teachers felt that this visit, like others, really inspired the children to see the future available to them if they persevere in writing, and children from all age groups gave extremely positive feedback about the experience.

best Materials for the Job!children in Year one at Park Lane Primary and nursery school have spent this half term learning all about robots. Linking with our topic on materials, the children have been busy designing their very own robot!

The children have found out facts, written poems, designed their own robots, and looked at how to build a robot using the best materials for the job. They looked at robots that are famous, and have enjoyed dressing up as Iron Man and a Transformer. recently, the foxes class performed their class assembly, where they shared their knowledge on materials with their families.

Lorraine Quince, IT Support/Communications Office at Park Lane, said: “This was a fun and inventive way to engage our younger children with our topic on materials. It allowed the children to use their imagination, and have fun whilst still learning.”

Year one have now become expert robot engineers!

the club's main activity is to support motorcycling through collective ride-outs and charitable events.

It supports an annual Easter Bunny run to addenbrookes hospital, taking Easter eggs, chocolate and toys for the children hospitalised there.

Each year, the club is represented at the MCn festival of Motorcycling, held at the East of England Showground, with its own stand and a varied display of bikes. This year’s show was the second event organised by MCn (having previously been known as the BMf rally), and took place on the weekend of May 14th-15th.

Club ride-outs are very popular during the summer evenings and at weekends, with many members putting forward their own suggestions, and taking on the role of group leader. Previous runs have included visits to coastal locations, the Peak District, Wales, and organised trips to france.

Within the club is a wide range of motorcycles, ranging from the classic ’50s era, up to the present-day superbike.

The club will be holding its own show on Coates Green, on Sunday July 31st, which will include a display of bikes, old and new. Entry to this event is free to all. flyers will be posted with full details, and of course everyone is welcome.
