I hope everyone had a great Easter, and is looking forward to the warmer months ahead of us. This month’s issue features an update on the plans for this year’s Whittlesey Festival - a brilliant event which never fails to disappoint – and we reveal the results of the Town Council’s survey on the future of the fantastic Tour of

Cambridgeshire cycle race.

I was lucky enough to join a group of Sir Harry Smith Community College students on their recent trip to the Must Farm archaeological dig, which you can read about in this month’s School News. It’s amazing to think that this extraordinary site has lain undiscovered on our doorstep for thousands of years, and it’s easy to see why it’s been making national headlines. It was a truly fascinating experience.

Until the next time...

Summer is just around the corner, and this month’s magazine features a huge range of events and activities to keep us entertained over the coming weeks and months. You can read about the upcoming annual Art Exhibition at St. Mary’s Church, where you can either view the works, or get creative by trying your hand at a

range of imaginative activities, while there’s also news on a free music concert to be held on the Market Square, in honour of the Queen’s ninetieth birthday… it promises to be a royal success!

As well as updates from our regular contributors, there’s news from local schools, clubs and charity volunteers, and in the History article, Jack concludes his fascinating look at Sir Harry Smith Community College.

Enjoy the read!

| A word from. . .

The prizes for the raffle were kindly donated by local businesses and members of the public, and on behalf of myself and the Mayoress, I wish to express my heartfelt thanks for their generosity. This time of the year marks Whittlesey Town Council’s ‘Citizen of the Year’ award, for which there are two categories: ‘Adults’ and ‘Young Citizen’. My thanks go to the Councillors who deliberated over the nominations for both - it was a difficult choice, as they are all winners in my eyes. The winner of this year’s ‘Citizen of the Year’ is Mr Richard Exton. The Young Citizen of the Year proved even more difficult to choose, but the overall winner is Bethany Mepham, a resident of Coates. Because of the closeness of voting, the Committee felt that the other nominees should be granted Merit Awards; these go to Jared Walton, Alex McFarland, and Millie Cousins. Well done to all of you, they are very well deserved.

I wish to correct a statement in last month’s article concerning ‘keyboard warriors’. This is not a term I

dreamed up, but is used frequently for participants of online social media. It was not meant as personal insult, and I apologise if it was taken as such – sorry, Colin Martin. To correct a statement made on social media about me being ‘computer illiterate’, this is totally incorrect, as I have qualifications to prove it. The choice whether or not to use social media is a personal one, and my choice is to not use, as I explained to Colin in our telephone conversation. The only item of computing I fail on is the typing speed - I am a one-finger-per-hand typist!

Any questions you wish to ask, please feel free to call either your Ward Councillor, or attend the Councillor surgeries which are listed at the Council Offices. All contact details can be found on WTC website.

Regards

Cllr Alex Miscandlon Mayor of Whittlesey

Your Mayor Alex Miscandlon

Hello everybody, I recently hosted my charity dinner at the Manor Leisure Centre, which was attended by many dignitaries, members of the public, American servicemen from Alconbury, and some of our friends. The evening was a great success, and the raffle raised over £700 for my charities.

Serving the community for over 30 years

We would like to thank all our

customers for their continued support

01733 208787www.kellyvision-kcs.co.uk [email protected] 26-28 Broad Street, Whittlesey PE7 1HA

With almost half the year through already, plans for this year’s Festival are well underway. Now in its ninth year, the Festival will be held on Sunday September 11th, a date you won’t want to miss! Year on year, it’s gone from strength to strength, and now attracts over eight thousand visitors from the local community and beyond. There is truly something for everyone, with numerous stalls and attractions. If you’ve been to the Festival before, you’ll know one of the highlights is the Peterborough Highland Band display. In addition, we are delighted to announce that the Romford Drum and Trumpet Band will also be at this year’s event. You can find out more about them in future articles in Discovering Whittlesea over the coming months.

The ever popular vintage car display grows each year, with well over a hundred vehicles and motorcycles along Market Street and Broad Street. Children can enjoy a whole host of amusements and activities, including rides, climbing walls, free face painting, and puppet shows available at the Whittlesey Christian Church marquee on the day. The Market Square will play host to a variety of dance displays - including Lindy-Hop, Dancing with Flags, Street Dance, and the Farcet Dance and Twirl Majorettes - as well as an extensive variety of music performances. You can see the fantastic local Schools Art Exhibition at the Whittlesey Christian Church, and visit the Craft Fair in Childers, in Station Road.

The Festival begins with a parade to celebrate the official opening by the Mayor of Whittlesey, starting in Broad Street and finishing at the Market Square. We know we can count on you to offer your support by lining the streets to create an amazing carnival atmosphere.

For more information about the Festival, or to be involved in some way, please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093.

We wish to thank everyone who took part in our survey. The people of Whittlesey have voted in favour of this, and the Council will now work with the race organisers to try and make it happen. WEB 337 56.73% FORM 257 43.27%

Have you ever considered becoming a School Governor?

Being at the heart of the local community, Alderman Jacobs Primary School (Academy Trust) would like to encourage you to take up the opportunity of being considered as a school governor.

Alderman Jacobs Primary School (Academy Trust) is committed to:

• Energy for Learning • Energy for Life • Energy for the Environment

“I became a Community Governor before my children reached school age, as I have always been passionate about children’s learning and development. Primary school plays a huge part in people’s lives, and I wanted to support the local school.” Laura Holland, Chair of the Governing Body

School governors are people who wish to make a positive contribution to children’s education, and are volunteers who work with the professional staff to ensure children get the best education the school can provide. They have an involvement in all aspects of school life, and carry out their duties by reading reports, asking questions, attending meetings, visiting the school, and attending school events. Schools benefit from having governors who represent all aspects of the local community, and this is where you could fit in.

Being a school governor has rewards: it is a role that offers good personal development, and provides access to training and experience of working in a board situation. In addition, you will gain an enormous sense of satisfaction from being part of a team, working to improve the educational outcomes of children.

Kevin Blencowe, Vice-Chair of Governing Body, explains why he joined in 2014: “I have a long-term vested interest in partnering the school to help deliver current and future pupils the education they deserve, which is so important in their primary school years.”

Can you spare some time? Do you enjoy working as part of a team? Are you interested in serving the local community? If the answer is YES, then please get in touch! For more information, please contact the Clerk to the Governing Body: [email protected], or 01733 202403.

The Imagination Studio in WhittleseySaturday May 7th, at St. Mary’s Church, Whittlesey, will see a creative digital intervention by two artists – Jenny Johnson (Whittlesey) and Luke Payn (Peterborough) – exploring the idea of 'motion', and working with lights, characters and movement.

Luke is inviting everyone to join in his workshop “Make Your Mash-up with Digital & Analogue Projections!” Ever heard of VJ-ing? It’s a bit like a live DJ, but instead of mixing music, the artist projects a mash-up of pictures and videos! If you would like an opportunity to experiment with this equipment, including analogue light projections, then come along to the Imagination Studio and play with projectors, cameras and VJ equipment, making your own mash-up of pictures and videos to project on the big screen!

You will also have a chance to try your hand at animation using iPads. Working with Jenny, you will explore different materials; try storyboarding; make a flip book; create, draw or sculpt your own characters; and bring them to life using the iPads to produce your own animated short film.

The Golden Age Team are Back with a Golden Age Fair in Your Local AreaA ‘Golden Age’ event will be held at The Eastrea Centre on May 25th, from 1.00pm to 5.00pm. Organised by Whittlesey Lions, the Town Council, and the Fenland District Council Golden Age Team, the event will offer knowledge and advice on many issues for over-fifties.

As part of the event, older people are being given the chance to exchange for free their old electric blankets for new ones. Anyone over sixty-five can take advantage of the offer. The new blankets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis by volunteers from the Cambridge Fire & Rescue Service, who will also be giving advice on fire safety.

There will be a variety of different organisations and stands at the event, including the “Ferret”, offering advice and information on what benefits are available. Also on hand will be members of the Council’s Leisure Team, with taster sessions of chair-based exercises.

We welcome anyone to attend, particularly if you know, or are looking after, older people, and would like to access more information on services available.

Please drop in for a free cuppa and cakes with your friends.

Coates Citizen of the Year 2016The Coates Citizen of the Year is an annual award that was launched at the Coates Village Show in 2011. It celebrates a person who has contributed significantly to the village over recent years, as voted for by fellow villagers.

The Coates Village show has been running for over ten years, and celebrates the skills and talents of the local community. The Committee felt that as well as celebrating one-off achievements, it would be a nice idea to recognise a person who contributes to village life on a daily basis.

We are now looking for your help in choosing the candidates for the Coates Citizen of the Year 2016. We all know someone who is helpful, but can you think of someone who goes that extra mile to help many villagers, or the local community? Candidates can be of any age, and can be put forward for any reason that you feel is worthy. Maybe you know a teenager that helps other people tend their gardens; a person that runs a local club, meeting or charity; a helpful neighbour who always has the time when you need a hand; or perhaps a villager who is well-known by everyone for their kindness?

If you have someone in mind, you can nominate them via email to [email protected], or in writing to Mark Fairbank, 14 Church Gardens, Coates, PE7 2BF. Please include your name and contact details, the name of the person you wish to nominate, and a brief explanation of why you wish to nominate them. The closing date for nominations is Friday July 1st 2016. This year’s Coates Village Show will be held on Saturday July 16th, at Holy Trinity Church, Coates, with full details to be published nearer the time. Schedules and entry forms for the show competition will be available from the village shop, local pubs, and www.wpcteam.org.uk in June and July.

WE NEED YOUR VOTE!

Spring flowering plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime as the lawn will love the warmer temperatures this month brings.

If you’re in the garden this month, you can be getting on with the following:

• Protect tender plants Late frosts could still cause damage to young plants.

• Earth up potatoes and promptly plant any still remaining When potatoes have emerged a few inches, pull the earth around the plant with a rake. This will give the plant more soil to grow in and it also improves drainage.

• Plant out summer bedding Lift out old plants, run a fork through the soil and add a good fertiliser, before replanting summer plants.

• Structures In dry spells, you can treat timber structures with wood preservative and stain. Make sure you use appropriate products - Creosote, for example, is no longer legal. Check and repair pergolas, arbours and arches if needed.

• Hoe off weeds Dig out tough perennial weeds with a fork. If you’re treating them with a weed killer, remember to catch them at the start of flowering to get the best results.

• Mow lawns weekly The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Feed your lawn after mowing to give it a good start to the year. A high nitrogen summer lawn fertiliser will encourage a healthy looking lawn. If moss is a problem apply a combined fertiliser and moss killer.

• Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs When they’ve finished flowering only remove the dead flower heads. Don’t cut down the foliage as this provides the bulb with food for next year’s flowers. Your bulbs will also benefit from an application of liquid fertiliser.

Reverend Nigel

| A Moment with Reverend NigelI begin with a message from Reverend Gill:Thank you for attending my final service, and for making it such a very special, happy and memorable occasion.

Thank you all for your good wishes and cards, and especially for the very generous cheque. I shall buy something for my home which will remind me of my thirteen years in the team.

Thanks also to:

• Nigel for planning and organising the service • All those who took part • Those who provided and served the splendid refreshments • Chris and Paul, the organists, and the joint churches’ choir, for leading and performing the beautiful anthems

I am retiring to my house in Wisbech, and will be leaving The Grove on April 27th. It has been a privilege and a joy to serve the parishes.

May God bless you all.

Just to reassure everyone, the pattern of Sunday services in our parish churches remains much the same. The only change is with our 9.30am services. St Andrew’s and Holy Trinity both have services at this time, and will alternate Holy Communion and Morning Service. The pattern looks like this:

St Andrew’s: (All services at 9.30am) First and third Sundays: Holy Communion. Second and fourth Sundays: Morning Praise.

Holy Trinity: (All services at 9.30am) First and third Sundays: Morning Praise. Second and fourth Sundays: Holy Communion.

St Mary’s: (All services at 11.00am) First Sunday: Morning Praise. Second, third and fourth Sundays: Holy Communion.

St Thomas’: First Sunday: Holy Communion at 11.00am. Second Sunday: Morning Praise at 11.00am. Third Sunday: Holy Communion at 6.00pm. Fourth Sunday: Evening Praise at 6.00pm

God bless.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader PartnershipConsumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering

the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Whittlesea, Coates & Eastrea areas and manager Mark Sherwood

agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH WIBefore our May meeting, members will be hunting in their garden sheds and cupboards for that ‘bit of old bone’ they found on a local walk.

The reason? This month's competition is ‘A Fossil’, and our speaker is Jamie Jordan, from Fossils Galore in March. He began fossil hunting and collecting as a child, and has had some exciting finds around Whittlesey. This promises to be a really interesting evening.

Tuesday May 24th is our Heritage Walk around Whittlesey, meeting at the Buttercross at 10.30am, and followed by lunch locally.

Our monthly meeting is Tuesday May 10th, at 7.30pm, in St Andrew’s Hall, Parkinsons Lane. New members and guests are very welcome to come along. Contact Sue 01733 205927, or find us on Facebook: Whittlesey Ladysmith WI.

Does joining a fun and friendly club sound like music to your ears? If so, you may be in luck, as Hereward Harmony Barbershop Chorus is always on the lookout for new members.

You don't need to be able to read music, as you will be taught with ‘teach-tools’ to sing in the barbershop style.

The group meets every Thursday evening between 7.30pm and 10.00pm, at Orton Wistow Community Hall, Orton Wistow, Peterborough, PE2 6XN. Want to know more? Contact Brian McDonnell on 07740 987127, or Les Ashton on 07878 734841.

Saturday April 9th saw yet another fantastic turnout for Street Pride.

Fifteen members turned up at New Road, half-expecting to find only a small amount of rubbish – instead, fourteen bags were collected! Well done to all who helped!

We’re sad to report a small amount of vandalism at the Kings Delph layby, where someone has driven a car over daffodils and two small shrubs. It looks as though that person has abandoned his badly-damaged narrowboat, which has been reported.

Members at our open meeting in March were richly entertained by the Upwood Ukeleles Group, so much so, that it is hoped they may return for this year’s Christmas party!

By the time this goes to print, we will have elected our very first committee at the AGM, comprised of some former folk from the steering committee, along with some new faces. Membership continues to creep up - almost two hundred in total - with the vast majority of those who joined initially renewing. Why don’t you come along to Childers at 2pm, on Thursday May 19th, to find out what the U3A is all about? A talk is to be given about the Citizens Advice Bureau, followed by refreshments, a chat, and an opportunity to look at all on offer on our display boards.

Each month in this spot we’ll provide a flavour of the activities on offer, by featuring one of our interest groups. The ‘Group of the Month’ this month is ‘Paper-crafting’, and comes from Trish Glazier:

Everyone loves birthdays! While finding a gift can be fun, finding the perfect card is not always so easy, and the card with the right picture so rarely has a suitable sentiment inside! So, why not make your own? Handmade cards are crafted with care and love, and are often treasured long beyond the birthday week.

You could learn to make perfect cards by joining the u3A Papercraft group. We meet at the Scaldgate Centre on the first Thursday of every month, from 2.00 - 4.00pm. You can be sure of a warm welcome and a cuppa, as well as yummy refreshments, thanks to the wonderful Val.

We share our knowledge, and delight in each other’s success. So far this year we have enjoyed two outings; we have been to the Craft Centre at Springfields, and to Coleman’s Warehouse in Rushden, to buy supplies, and of course to enjoy a pleasant lunch. As well as making cards, lots of us also enjoy scrapbooking, and we hope to learn how to make paper flowers.

If this is something you fancy, and you would like to know more, phone Trish on 01733 204048.

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Whittlesey

What is Rotary?

Rotary is a service organisation of people from all walks of life, united worldwide, who help those in need, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and work toward world understanding and peace. Rotarians meet on a regular basis to enjoy each other's fellowship, and discuss ways to serve others.

We are also very much a local club, and since our formation in 1954, we have supported many local organisations and groups; for example, by way of grants to local schools and Life Education.

Share Your Skills by Volunteering for Rotary

Being part of Rotary is more than just giving back to the community by volunteering. It is also about you bringing your skills, experience and enthusiasm to help it thrive, whilst making some great friends along the way. Our club is a friendly place, which invites speakers from a wide range of backgrounds to share their knowledge, increasing our social and cultural understanding. Members also share a common interest in friendship.

We meet on Mondays (excluding Bank Holidays) at 6.15pm at The Falcon Hotel, London Street, Whittlesey, PE7 1BH. If you would like to join us, and/or would like more information about joining the Rotary Club of Whittlesey, please contact Laurence Seaton via email: [email protected].

We are also planning an open evening at 7:00pm, on Monday June 6th - if you would like to attend to meet members and learn more, we will be pleased to see you.

Whittlesey Dental Care (previously known as Stephen Dodding Dental Care) has been serving the local population for over three

decades, providing excellent dental care in a safe and friendly environment. The practice offers a broad range of services,

including cosmetic dentistry, implants, and teeth straightening. There are many reasons why a person is embarrassed by their smile:

crooked, missing, or discoloured teeth, gaps between teeth, and ill-fitting dentures are some of the most common. These can have

a huge impact on self-esteem and confidence.

What options are available?IMPLANTS: Whether you’re missing a single tooth, or multiple teeth,

or looking for a more secure alternative for your denture, dental implants are an excellent restorative option. A dental implant is an artificial root (the part of the tooth that anchors it the bone) made of titanium, to which a fabricated crown (the part visible

above the gum-line), bridge or denture is attached.

PERFECT SMILE IN JUST SIx MONTHS: Are you one of the millions of adults in need of adult braces, who are unhappy,

self-conscious or embarrassed about your smile? Many adults do not want to wear adult metal braces for years,

or are concerned that other teeth-straightening procedures could be too invasive, or expensive.

Now, there is an effective, safe and affordable cosmetic braces solution. Whittlesey Dental Care is an approved

provider of the ‘Six Month Smile’ procedure, where clear braces are used to correct the smile within six months.

TEETH WHITENING: Teeth whitening involves bleaching your teeth to make them lighter. It should only be performed by

a dentist, or other regulated dental professional, on the prescription of a dentist. Some beauty salons offer teeth

whitening, but this is illegal if there's no dental professional present, and could put your oral health at risk; the same

goes for DIY home teeth-whitening kits.

Another solution for discoloured teeth is veneers, which make teeth look natural and healthy. Because they

are very thin and are held in place by a special, strong adhesive, very little preparation of the tooth is needed,

with some types needing no preparation at all.

DENTURES: Dentures are removable false teeth, made of acrylic or metal. They are fitted over the gums to

replace missing teeth, addressing problems with eating, smiling and speech. If you have an ill-fitting denture, it

can be stabilised by implant-retained dentures.

We continue our look at the role of blood in our bodies. Last month, we saw that it can be viewed as two systems - the arterial system (which takes blood to the cells) and the venous system (which returns blood to the heart). To ensure that the blood can reach the farthest cells, the arteries are elastic and have an ever-decreasing diameter. The next problem that the arterial system has to solve is the demanding nature of the cells. They are fussy and unforgiving. Sometimes, they are working hard and want lots of blood; other times, they are recuperating and need little. The blood provides a rich supply of nutrients which the cells need to perform their designated function. At the same time, the blood transports waste (created by the cells) away from the area. The cells’ demands change in accordance with what they are doing. The arterial system therefore has to be very responsive, immediately accommodating these changing demands.

To meet these demands, the arterial system must have control of the vessel diameters, as these control the rate of the blood flow. The arteries have elastic walls that absorb the energy wave created

by the beating heart. As we branch off from the arteries into the smaller diameter vessels, we notice a difference in the structure of the walls. Instead of having elastic outer walls, the blood vessels display thin muscular walls, and are called arterioles.

It is through the contraction of these muscles that gives the arterial system its control of the blood flow to the cells. A contraction of the outer wall muscles results in a smaller diameter and thus a reduced blood flow to the cells. The converse also applies. The muscle responds to a complex interaction between nervous system, hormonal (endocrine) system and local signalling molecules, the details of which are beyond the scope of this article.

In the UK, Google receives 27 searches a minute (1,171,770 every month) for depression, 22 (939,820 a month) for stress, and 21 (907,620 a month) for anxiety. The Office for National Statistics’ figures show that more than 15 million working days a year are lost to these issues.

While an article of this length cannot comprehensively deal with this subject, I can endeavour to inspire anyone suffering from these problems.

I was taken by the Pastor of a church in Denmark, to visit a family left totally devastated by the sudden suicide of a much loved husband. The family had gathered together for a birthday celebration, and the man had played with the grandchildren. Everyone was totally unaware of the despair raging inside him - how could they be, when it was locked so deep inside him? After the evening meal, the man hung himself in one of the outbuildings. Fortunately, the wife and children were part of a wonderful church family, with a caring Pastor who lovingly and wisely helped them through their trauma.

Despite all the amazing advances in medical science, despair, anxiety and stress continue to grow at an alarming rate, leaving an increasing number feeling hopeless, and driven to keep things locked inside. Be encouraged; you can turn things around. It will not be overnight, but step by step, you can change things, however impossible they may seem.

Begin your journey towards freedom by doing three things:

• Don’t negatively personalise it. You are not a bad or hopeless person. The real, amazing YOu is still there. It may be trapped inside, but it’s still there.

• Allow yourself to believe that you can - and will - come through this. There is a life beyond where you are now.

• Reach out for help from someone who understands, and is willing to wisely guide, support, and encourage you.

| Local History by Jack Harris

This month we take our final look at the history of Sir Harry Smith Community College. We ended last time with the retirement of Mr. Burgess, the school’s first Head, and begin now with the appointment of his successor, Mr. Ronald J. Moores.

SIR HARRY SMITH SCHOOL: PART 4

Mr. Moores became Headmaster in January 1971, having moved to Whittlesey from a school in Gütersloh, Germany. Later that year, the school became a Community College, with the Head’s title changing to ‘Principal’, and in 1972, the school leaving age was raised to sixteen; this required the construction of new buildings, which were opened in December 1973. These included the completion of the first floor at the front of the school, and on the ground floor, an additional biology laboratory.

Mr. Moores left for a brand new Comprehensive in Angmering, West Sussex, in February 1975, with Fred Saunders standing in as Acting Principal until April. He was followed by David Talbot Hill, who would stay until 1986. Mr. Hill introduced the school’s first compulsory uniform to the First Formers in 1976, with fifty other students choosing to wear it voluntarily. Records mention a grey and green uniform brought in in 1955, though this was not compulsory.

1982 saw further additions to the building, with a new Art block built

above the north corridor, and two science labs and an additional housecraft room added on the ground floor. Mr. Hill was succeeded by Nick Edison-Giles in 1986, and he was followed by Ian Carpenter (1989-92), and Jenny James (1992-99). It was during Miss James’ time that the old prefab ‘HORSA’ huts – which had housed classrooms and a dining hall since the school’s opening - were finally made redundant, with the addition of new buildings for the Music, Drama and PE departments, as well as new kitchen facilities.

Jenny James was followed by Eric Winstone (1999-2000), before Mike Sandeman joined in 2000. Notable changes during Mr. Sandeman’s time included the addition of new English and Technology blocks, as well as the construction of a new Library in 2007. Laurie Richards, who had taught at the school since the 1960s, was Acting Principal for the 2007-8 year, before current Principal, Jonathan Digby, joined in September 2008.

Huge alterations were made to the school between 2011 and

2013, as renovations commenced under the government’s ‘Building Schools for the Future’ scheme. The transformation retained almost all of the building’s original structure, equipping it for modern-day learning while maintaining its character. The school became an Academy in 2012.

To mark the completion of these extensive building works, and to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the school’s opening, members of the public were invited to tour the building in July 2013. Over one-hundred-and-forty people attended, as well as over twenty retired former staff members.

In 1972, the school leaving age was raised to sixteen; this required the construction of new buildings, which were opened in December 1973.

Deeds of VariationFew people know that it is possible to vary

a gift or redirect an inheritance. Even fewer people know this can be done up

to two years after the date of death. There are many reasons why people would benefit from redirecting the estate; for example, parents can pass the inheritance to struggling children rather than building up their own estate which would be taxable.

Lawyers have, for many years, tried to compose wills that predict the tax position at death, but in reality this is well nigh impossible. A Variation will re-write all or part of the deceased’s will in terms just as if written by the deceased. Relinquishing a benefit is not counted as a gift by the beneficiaries, so they don’t even have to survive seven years for it to be tax-effective.So, in a typical case, the whole estate could have been given to a spouse, perhaps a widow. Two years allows her time to make a fully informed decision. Even if all the liquid assets will be

needed by her, it might be prudent to arrange for ownership of the house in a way that is tax-efficient. She probably already owns a half and doesn’t need the other. In this case, a Deed of Variation could come in very useful.

If you are in this position, or wish to discuss Deeds of Variation further, then please get in touch with us.

Fortunately, in the local region, we have had no confirmed sightings of the tick or any cases of Babesiosis. The disease itself is actually a parasite which attacks the red blood cells. It can be spread via blood transmission or dog bites, but is usually spread by the tick.

SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR:• Lethargy and shortness of breath.

• Loss of appetite.

• Weight loss.

• Fever.

• Pale gums (due to anaemia).

• Jaundice (yellowing of the gums, eyes and skin).

• Discoloured urine and stools.

• Swollen lymph nodes.

• Sometimes liver failure, brain damage, or kidney failure may occur.

These can be symptoms to many different conditions and, if you are worried, it is best to visit the vet and get a diagnosis.

Babesiosis does not usually affect humans, but it is possible and can produce nasty symptoms. However, ticks can carry other serious diseases and care should be taken to avoid getting bitten

DIAGNOSIS: There are a number of ways the infection can be diagnosed; vets can see the parasite in blood cells on a smear under the microscope, also blood tests can be used to check for antibodies and parasitic DNA. The latter two require repeated samples, several weeks apart.

TREATMENT: The prognosis for infected animals is guarded but it can be treated. Infected dogs can become very sick and early detection and prevention is essential. Any infected dogs will need intensive care with IV fluids. The drugs that can treat the infection are not readily available in the uK and may need to be imported from Europe, where the disease is more common. Any infected pet that recovers remains a carrier for several years.

PREVENTION: Although there are no licensed vaccines available, there are products to repel and kill ticks including the Dermacentor reticulatus tick. Ticks do not usually start transmitting the infection for 24-48 hours after attaching to the dog, so having a preventative will help minimise the risk.

We are sure most of you will have seen on the news the disease Babesiosis (Babesia canis) that is spread by a tick (Dermacentor reticulatus), commonly known as the meadow tick, and one not normally to be found in the U.K.

Tick Alert!

We have a range of products available, so please come in to enquire, and a member of our team will assist you. Or, you can contact us at Whittlesey Veterinary Centre on 01733 685514, and our staff will be happy to advise you.

Until recently, SsangYong mainly produced workhorse 4x4s, but it now hopes to cash in on our obsession with the compact SUV, with the Tivoli. The Nissan Juke, Vauxhall Mokka and the relaunched Suzuki Vitara illustrate the importance of this sector, and SsangYong’s launch of a neat, well-equipped and decently-priced contender is interesting.

The Tivoli has been well-received, though its looks – which are almost Toyota-ish, with its squared style and flared panels – have received some criticism. More importantly, it drives well, with its ride and handling more composed than you might expect.

Around town, the Tivoli delivers a poor 28.8mpg, but on a run, it returns 49.6mpg, which isn’t bad at all. On average, you should get a reasonable 39.2mpg.

This car is well equipped, with full leather seats, heated front seats, a seven-inch touchscreen radio, 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers,

seven airbags, a stability programme, anti-lock brakes, keyless entry, six-speaker stereo system, plenty of chrome trim, and powered tailgate release – not to mention the attractive five year warranty.

Tivoli comes as an SE, EX and ELX model. Prices start at £12,950, and the test model is £17,000. The test version, with its vivacious red upholstery, which might not be to everyone’s taste.

It is expected to sell six thousand a year in the uK, which sounds like a modest ambition to me. Cheaper than Juke, and better than a Dacia Duster? I would expect sales to soar.

As well as offering new vehicles, servicing, repairs, and MOTs, MT Cars also has a wide range of used vehicles for sale. To book a test drive, call 01733 309782, or go online to www.mtcars.co.uk to see the range of vehicles on offer.

New marques take an age to become established, so you can see why SsangYong, which briefly succeeded in the UK in the 1990s, but then suffered financial trouble, has its work cut out.

I often get asked which are the best stillwaters to head for, particularly at weekends.

We all know the top quality sport on offer at Decoy Lakes, but it can get very busy on a Sunday. Northey Park Fishery, just off the North Bank, is a

great place to fish, and much less busy. The ever expanding complex at Float Fish Farm Fishery has something for everyone: from the novice to the match angler, owner Dale Hudson has provided a fishery that every type of angler can enjoy.

Kingsland Fishery has been in fine form of late, and is one water you can fish surface baits, which are already being taken to double figures on bread. Those fishing Railway Lakes have also reported some much improved sport, with some huge carp being taken from the bigger of the two on boilies.

Due to the success of the recent Angling Trust Winter League final fished on our local drains and Decoy Lakes, the event will return to the same venues in 2017. The only problem this year was the sheer volume of cars that descended on Whittlesey, an issue which the organisers are well aware of.

I can’t end this page without mentioning the passing of one of Whittlesey’s great angling characters, ‘Mac’ Page. Everybody knew him from his time spent at Decoy Lakes, and later over at Railway Lakes, as well as fishing on the Fenland drains around Whittlesey, and along the North Bank. He was a mine of information, and always eager to pass on his vast knowledge to anybody, whether young or old – it did not matter to him, for he just wanted everyone to catch a few fish. He was a true gent, and I will certainly miss him coming into my shop. I know those that met him at our local waters will greatly miss him too.

This house is part of The Sick Children’s Trust, which

cares for children and their families whilst the child

is undergoing treatment in hospital. Benjamin, the youngest member of our four church congregations,

is undergoing treatment for cancer. This requires extensive periods of stay in Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Acorn House means that his parents can stay close

to him. Acorn House opened in 2000 and helps approximately 440 families every year. Situated within the hospital grounds, Acorn House is only minutes away from the wards and has been specially

designed to ensure access for those with disabilities.

Acorn House is open 365 days a year and can accommodate fifteen families a night. Rooms are allocated to families on a priority basis, and are offered completely free of charge. It is funded solely

by voluntary donations from individuals, companies

and charitable trusts. The cost of staffing and maintaining Acorn House amounts to approximately

£80,000 a year.

Acorn House has fifteen private family bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a communal dining area, a well-stocked playroom, a

shared living room and quiet room and full laundry

facilities. There are also direct telephone lines in all of the family bedrooms linking them to the hospital wards,

so that families can be contacted immediately in the

event of an emergency. Some of the funds we raise will be going to provide

toys and equipment for use on Benjamin’s ward. If you feel you can help by making a donation, either pass it to Nigel or Gill, or someone you know

who goes to one of our parish churches. Please keep this project in your prayers. We wish you a prayerful Advent and a Blessed and

Happy Christmas.Revd Nigel and Revd Gill.

During Advent and over Christmas this year our congregations are

going to be raising funds to support the work of Acorn House.

Predator anglers from across the country often pick out our local fenland drains as the venues they want to fish, regarding them as some of the best, if not the best, and most accessible in England. Despite a much milder than usual November, the British Pike Championship fished on Whittlesey waters produced the proof, if

indeed any were needed, that top quality action can be found on our doorstep. This year saw 220 anglers competing in this unique event. After a week of heavy rain, conditions were poor and the soggy wet banks were difficult in places. Many were unsure just how the drains would perform on the day; however, the unpredictable Glassmore Bank proved to be in very good form. Winner Chris Wade got off to a blistering start. Offering small roach dead baits, he tempted a ‘jack’ pike on his very first cast. The next hour

Runner-up was Rob Ellis with a 31lb 8oz total. Rob, who was also on the Glassmore section, put three pike to the scales which included the best fish of the day at 23lb 4oz. Rita Clarke from Peterborough, made it a hat-trick of wins in the ladies category with a solitary 5lb fish, taken early in the match

Southampton. Jack’s two fish total of 10lb 10oz also saw

him take second in section, nudging dad, Jason, into third

Nene Outdoors (Peterborough) Re-opens under New Management

Following a temporary closure at the end of 2015, the Nene Outdoors Water sports and Activity Centre

re-opened at the beginning of March under the management of Nene Park Trust.

Situated on Gunwade Lake in Ferry Meadows next to the Lakeside Kitchen and Bar and the Rutland Cycling Hire Shop, the water sports

currently on offer at Nene Outdoors include:

Sailing • Windsurfing • Kayaking • Canoeing Raft building • Pedalo football • Paddle boarding

In taking over management of the centre, the Trust hopes to build on the core water sports offered and

link this with its existing outdoor education, forest schools and events and activities programme.

Anna Thompson, Outdoor Education and Activities Manager at Nene Park Trust commented: “We are really

excited about the opportunity to develop Nene Outdoors as a hub for outdoor activities in the region. The centre is already a great place to enjoy water sports and, as we

look to the future, we aim to develop a great range of land-based activities to add to our offering.”

To celebrate the reopening of the centre, Nene Outdoors will be holding a Family Fun Day on Sunday May 22nd. There will be a range of activities on offer for you to take part in, with plenty of instructors on hand to help you – so

why not come along and try out something new?

‘Bags of help’ for Community Projects in CambridgeshireDo you know of a local community green space project that would benefit from up to £12,000? If so, there are bags of help at hand!

The money raised from the 5p bag charge in Tesco stores is being used to pay for a large number of local projects, to improve green spaces in communities across the uK. Grants of £8,000, £10,000 and £12,000 are on offer through the scheme.

Community charity Groundwork is administering the funding, and you can find all the details on our dedicated website: www.groundwork.org.uk/tesco.

In total, the Bags of Help programme will support around two and a half thousand projects across the uK each year, about forty of which are in Cambridgeshire. There will be two funding rounds per year over the next three years, meaning that around £700,000 will be given out in grants.

The next round of applications opens online on April 18th. Don’t miss your chance to benefit! All information about the scheme is on the website (details above), but you can also contact your local Bags of Help Enabler for further information about applying, at [email protected] or 07736 132870.

Local Firm Raises Money in aid of Polycystic Kidney Disease Charity

The ‘Cooke's Cake and Coffee’ event, held on March 19th, has so far raised a fantastic £3218.30, which will go towards research for a cure for Polycystic Kidney Disease.

A mini bake-off competition was held, with fourteen wonderful entries. Sue and Edith, from the Whittlesey Ladysmith WI, had the hard task of tasting and judging all the amazing cakes! Larry's Heel Bar kindly donated a trophy for the winner, which went to Beverly Mason, for her gorgeous Limoncello cake. Second place was awarded to Emogen Mantey, for her lovely lemon drizzle cake. The cake sales were incredible, with a constant flow coming in and being sold throughout the day.

A ‘Welly Wanging’ competition was also held, with James Carter throwing a very impressive 70.7 feet, and Lydia Ross throwing 52.3 feet. Hugo Brill won the child's category with a massive 60 feet.

The raffle was a great success, raising £1565.00. The Cookes would like to extend a huge thank-you to all the local businesses who donated prizes, and also everyone who purchased tickets.

TARGET OVARIAN CANCERFollowing our article earlier this year, we want to express our thanks to all those who supported the white rabbit street collection in Whittlesey, held earlier in March, when a magnificent amount of £516.00 was raised, and to everyone who has sent in donations to our website.

Our thanks also go to Whittlesey and District Lions Club, for donating their time and equipment when we held a Race Night on March 18th. This raised just over £2000, which has now helped us to reach 67% of our fundraising target of £8,000.

A Quiz Night is being arranged for Friday May 20th at Childers, in Whittlesey, and a Strawberry Afternoon Tea at St Andrew’s Church Hall, on Sunday June 26th. We hope that you will feel able to continue supporting us in reaching our target, either by attending any fundraising events, or by donating to www. justgiving. com/riding4mum. For further details, please contact us on 01733 202008, or by e-mail to [email protected].

Science week began with an explosive start, as Colin Barker (science teacher at SHSCC) entertained the children with some truly magical science during Monday’s assembly.

Years One to Five embarked on a variety of scientific tasks, encouraging them to persevere, work collaboratively, and keep a positive attitude, in line with the school’s ethos of developing a ‘growth mind-set’.

Later in the week, Year Two children got hands-on with a team from King’s Lynn-based toy manufacturer Learning Resources. Activities

included the extremely popular ‘Robot Mouse’, with children testing out their coding skills, as they programmed Colby the Mouse to find a block of cheese. The children also had fun creating colourful volcanoes with tools from the Primary Science Lab Set.

Joanne Moore (qualified primary school teacher, and Educational Product Development Coordinator at Learning Resources) said: “Studying STEM subjects helps youngsters to develop their creativity, problem- solving and technical skills. Our STEM activity packs encourage cross-functional skills from scientific exploration and engineering, to physics and coding.”

Children in Years Five and Six were lucky enough to take part in a Bible Exhibition Day at Whittlesey Baptist Church.

At the church, volunteers gave the children a whistle-stop tour of the Bible and its main stories. 'Guest speakers' from the stories, including Noah, Moses and David, gave the children their own point of view about the part they played. Students also took part in a quiz, and tasted some foods from the Bible.

Year Five teacher, Sarah Gregory said: “This was an enjoyable and inventive way to engage our youngsters with well-known Bible stories. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the day, and we are very grateful to members of Whittlesey Baptist Church."

Back at school, Mr. Pallister lead an ambitious singing session, culminating in a performance by the children in assembly of what they had learned. Finally, a competitive game of rounders, led by Mr. Bailey and Miss Smith, provided an exciting end to a busy term!

On March 15th, two groups of students from Sir Harry Smith Community College were lucky enough to visit the Must Farm archaeological site, at King’s Dyke.

Organised by Mr. De Almeida and Mrs Curtis, the trip included a guided tour of the dig – dubbed ‘Britain’s Pompeii’ - and the chance to view a selection of the artefacts found there.

Year Eleven student, Connor Martin said: “It’s not often that we see the world going crazy over Whittlesey, but over the past few months, archaeologists and the historical community have been doing just that.” Olivia Townsend, in Year Eight, added: “We were really fortunate to have an opportunity like this; one not yet available to the public.”

The students thoroughly enjoyed their trip, and thanked their guide, Selena, for her informative tour, and all the archaeological team for giving the school the opportunity to view the site.

In the words of Year Thirteen student, James Dudley: “Must Farm was a once-in-a-lifetime historical experience that I am sure I, and the rest of the group, will never forget.”

Fen Tigers Goalball is a new local club, launched in 2016 and funded by “Sport England”. It was launched on January 23rd this year, and runs

every other Saturday from 10am until noon at Neale Wade Sports Centre at Neale Wade Academy.

Goalball is a fun, fast-paced sport that was developed after World War Two, for blind and visually-impaired veterans, as part of their rehabilitation. It has since developed into a competitive sport and is included in the Paralympic Games.

It is a game played by two teams of three players (plus up to three substitutes). The object of the game is to bowl the ball along the floor to score in the opposing goal. The other team aim to defend the ball using the full length of the body. Sounds simple enough doesn’t it? However, all players wear blindfolds and the ball contains a bell, meaning players have to use their hearing alone to locate the ball, along with the tactile court markings that are used for orientation!

The sport is great for both sighted and visually-impaired people of all abilities, aged eleven years and over. The club is lucky enough to have two Great Britain Goalball players from March as coaches, so you are in safe and very capable hands. The club is affiliated to Goalball UK and their fully-qualified instructors are all DBS checked and first-aid trained, whilst the club has full public liability insurance.

Sounds like fun? Then give it a go; you can just turn up on the day and pay £3 for your session. The club even offers a collection and return service from March train station for an extra £2 – just let them know if you need this service.

The next training session will be on May 14th, from 10am until noon, at Neale Wade Sports Centre, Neale Wade Academy, Wimblington Road, March, Cambs. PE15 9PX

There are several ways to release equity from your property, and there are many reasons why you may wish to consider

doing so. Having an open conversation with a qualified adviser can provide the information required for you to make an informed decision.

As an example, there is the interest-only lifetime mortgage. The interest rate is likely to be higher than a fixed-term mortgage, consequently the amount eventually repaid is likely to be higher. On the other hand, you may opt to let the interest roll up, you could opt to pay back some of the interest, or opt to pay back all of the interest so that the loan amount remains constant.

In a recent case, this was a way to solve the problem that had developed where the repayment plan for an interest-only mortgage (an endowment policy) was unable to repay the sum required.

A fully qualified adviser will not only familiarise you with all the possible alternatives and options that will suit your circumstances, he or she will also explore other ways that may achieve your objectives that may be even better value for money. You will be encouraged to involve family members – although the decision remains with the home owner.

A frequent expression I hear is that people want to take action ‘When it will do most good’. Sometimes, this involves visiting far-flung family, educational needs of young family members and helping to get on to the property ladder.

Having a high level of guaranteed monthly income is important in retirement. Having a lump sum can make a substantial difference, so if your wealth is tied up in bricks and mortar this might be a solution.

If you think that this or any other kind of financial planning may be of help to you – please contact me for a free initial consultation.

‘This may involve a lifetime mortgage, the actual rate available will depend upon your circumstances. Ask for a personalised illustration.’

Brian Smithyman

Brian was born in Walsall, the seventh of eight children, and left school at fifteen to become an apprentice refrigeration engineer. He became a Christian at nineteen, entering the ministry as a travelling preacher four years later; first in the UK, and then internationally. Brian married Eunice in 1963, and purchased a house in Hednesford, Staffordshire. In 1982, the couple, along with their son Andrew, moved to the Fens to start what is now Whittlesey Christian Church.

The family purchased their current facilities in 1997, with a vision to transform it from a run-down and tired building, into a modern facility suitable for a growing, vibrant family church. That process continues.

| In the Hot Seat1 WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?

Boxing Day family meals – these were great fun, but non-attendance was not an option to our mother!

2 WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

My parents, who taught their eight children to understand the importance of values, boundaries, respect, and hard work. Voicing disagreement was positively encouraged; shouting and arguing was not.

3 WHICH TWO CHARACTERS (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY?

David, King of Israel, whose Psalms have taught me so much about humanity, and helped mould the counselling side of my ministry.

Andre Rieu, because of my passion for music and worship. His fresh approach has revolutionised classical music, without destroying its heart.

4 HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS?

Imaginative, visionary, patient, committed, musical.

5 IF THERE WAS ONE THING THAT YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT WHITTLESEY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Establishing and implementing a clear vision to turn it into a thriving town, without jeopardising its many qualities. Without this, we will continue to experience limited employment opportunity, same-style shops, and be starved of significant investment and planning by Fenland & Cambridgeshire Councils.

6 WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU?

Stand up for what your heart is telling you, and don’t be influenced by time wasters. Set goals in life, then put all your effort into achieving them. You alone choose to be either your own worst hindrance, or your most vital asset.

7 WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR YOU?

Making a difference to the community, while enjoying retirement (whenever that’s possible!). Guiding the church to remain at the heart of the spiritual and natural life of our community, and establishing the next generation of Senior Leadership.
