Since starting this role at the beginning of the year, I’ve been amazed by how quickly the months seemed to have gone by – already, we are a quarter of the way through the year, and finally on the verge of some warmer weather!

In this month’s issue, we have the usual updates from various local clubs, as well as news from local charities

and volunteers. The ‘Hot Seat’ is occupied by Jan Neville, of J. Neville Opticians, while the Sir Harry Smith School returns for a third instalment in the History page.

I am pleased to say that we also have some good news on the subject of Whittlesey’s long-running supermarket saga, in the form of funding provided by Tesco for local causes. You can see who benefitted from this money in the Community Matters section.

Have a great month, and enjoy the Easter break.

Spring has finally arrived, and at last we can put away the big coats, enjoy some sunshine, and look forward to a relaxing break over Easter.

The magazine features your usual wide variety of news and advice, including articles from the local schools, and updates from groups such as Street Pride and Whittlesey in Bloom, both of whom work tirelessly all year round to keep

the town looking tidy and attractive. I’m sure you’ll all agree, they do a fabulous job.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our regular contributors for their continued input and support, as well as the dedicated team who work hard to produce the magazine. Without these people there would be no Discovering Whittlesea, and I’ve been delighted by all the positive comments we’ve received since we welcomed our new team earlier this year. We are always striving to improve, and your feedback really does mean a lot.

With that said, it only remains for me to wish you a fantastic month, and a very happy Easter.

Copy deadline for the May issue of Discovering Whittlesea magazine is 6th April 2016, please email [email protected]

| a word from. . .

As a bit of a Luddite, I do not participate in social media, but I am informed by those that do of issues that are discussed there. Some of these remarks are inaccurate due to lack of knowledge; all I can say is, if anyone requires accurate and honest information concerning me or my Council work (at both Whittlesey and Fenland), they only have to phone and ask. This is what one keyboard warrior recently did as a result of inaccurate social media reports, and having spoken to me and received a full explanation, he finished the telephone conversation satisfied. Thank you Colin. I am looking forward to attending as many functions as possible - if you have a function you require either myself or the Deputy Mayor to attend, please contact Whittlesey Council Office. We will be happy to do our best to help in any way we can. Having recently given a presentation at SHSCC to the young lady whose picture adorned the front page of Discovering Whittlesea’s December issue, I was made aware that due to a misunderstanding, SHS pupils

had missed out on a visit to Must Farm. On leaving the school, I went straight to the site director and project leader, and, with the help of Mrs Angels Curtis at the College, the issue has been resolved, and a visit by the school has been arranged. Well done to all concerned, and thank you Must Farm.

The Tesco Fund has now been allotted to all the successful applicants. For those that were unsuccessful, may I point out that WTC operate a grant system, for which you have to apply in a formal manner. Please feel free to contact Mrs Evans, the Town Clerk. There are also two local community funding organisations, Glassmoor Bank Wind Turbines Community Fund, and Burnt House Wind Turbine Fund. If anyone requires any assistance in accessing these funding sources, Cllr Alan Bristow is happy to help. Please contact him either directly, or through the Council Office.

Many Thanks.

Hello Everyone. We are already a third of the way through 2016, and lots of local volunteer groups are preparing for a busy time ahead. These include those helping the town stand out when the judging takes place for the In Bloom competition. I wish all those taking part in all ventures good luck.

Hello one and all. As I start this month’s article, Easter is just around the corner and, with it, kids on their two-week holiday! Wonderful.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Neighbourhood Watch coordinators, who do a fabulous job which is massively important in the drive to reduce crime. They are a real asset to the police service. If anyone is interested in joining them, please make contact with the local police, and we will make sure this is passed on.

There is a new mailbox address for Whittlesey, should you want to contact the local team to report anything, or just for advice on criminal matters. The address is [email protected]. We will respond to your queries within 24 hours.

Our work with local schools and young peoples’ care homes is growing, but any contact from other local groups would be most welcome. The team are more than willing to attend local gatherings to offer advice, or talk generally about the role of the police service. These are areas I am really keen to progress and develop, but we need you to make contact to discuss your particular requirements.

Whittlesey is a low crime area, and I want it to stay that way. However, do let us know of any problems, and we will do our best to deal with them.

Until the next issue, stay safe.

Celebrations at The HermitageThere were celebrations at The Hermitage care home in February, as two residents turned ninety-five on the same day. Cyril Beck was born on February 20th 1921 in Eston, a small village near Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. Cyril moved to Whittlesey some seventy years ago, and made his home at The Hermitage in March 2010, where he has enjoyed the company of other residents and the care from staff.

Betty Tompsett was born in Elton, near Peterborough, on the same day in 1921. She lived there until she was sixteen, when she moved to Northampton to take up hairdressing. Betty worked in the NAAFI during World War Two, before moving back to Peterborough, where she remained until she moved in to The Hermitage in October 2015.

Judy Wilson, Manager at the home, said: “This is the first time I can remember having two residents with the exact same birthday - we have had people born on the same date, but never the same year too.”

Cyril and Betty enjoyed a glass of wine, and spent the day celebrating with visitors and staff.

St. Mary's Church Art ExhibitionThe Friends of St Mary's Church are holding their annual Art Exhibition on May 6th, 7th and 8th in the church. Entries are invited from all types of artists and craftspeople, and can be displayed for £2 per exhibit.

UPDATE FROM WHITTLESEY IN BLOOMOur AGM on Tuesday March 1st was well attended, and Bob Ollier, Parks and Open Spaces Manager at FDC, organised an excellent exercise regarding the judging of our Anglia in Bloom entry.Bob also presented the 2015 ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood Awards’ from the RHS Britain in Bloom, as follows: St Mary’s Church Gardens - Developing (level 3); Lattersey Nature Reserve and Friends of the Cemetery – Thriving (level 4) and The Pound, Gateway Projects and Allotments Rejuvenation – Outstanding (level 5). Well done to everyone.

Since I wrote last month’s article, FDC have decided that the neglected and overgrown shrubs in High Causeway should be removed. I have received comments from residents that are unhappy about this, but I am sure that when the area is refurbished, you will appreciate that it could not have been left to deteriorate as it was. The central tree will remain. It will be maintained in the future by Pauline and David of the In Bloom team.

The ‘Clean for the Queen’ national initiative took place on March 5th. Despite the cold weather, the Street Pride team did our town proud once again, and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that turned out to help.

I am delighted to announce that we were successful in our application for a share of the Tesco fund distributed by the Town Council, which will go a long way towards new projects this year.

The Friends of the Cemetery would like to remind visitors who take their cars into the cemetery that the gates should always be closed after entry and exit. Thank you.

If you would like to join us, our next meetings are planned as follows: Tuesdays April 5th, May 3rd and May 31st at 6.30 pm at Grosvenor House (please use the side entrance). You will be made very welcome.

If you would like to help our Town/Environment and make new like-minded friends, everyone is welcome.

Update on the Tesco GrantIn October 2015, Whittlesey Town Council invited local organisations to apply for a share of a £10,000 grant fund, for those who could demonstrate that they provide a benefit to people living in Whittlesey, Coates, Eastrea, Turves and Pondersbridge.Funding had been provided by Tesco in recognition of the work put in by the Town Council and residents, in respect of their planning application which sadly came to nothing. There was a tremendous response, which uncovered a number of organisations doing fantastic work that very few people knew much about! The total project costs of the thirty-four applicants was over £61,000, and the total amount requested was over £24,000 – so three Councillors were selected to carefully consider all the requests. The final allocation of funds was spread across 25 organisations, as follows:

Whittlesey Town Council is delighted to assist all these causes, and hope that we might do something similar in future. Meanwhile, although there is no Tesco store in Whittlesey, at least their donation can be of benefit to the area. For further information, please contact the Town Clerk, Sue Evans, on either 01733 351296 or [email protected]

The Young People’s Counselling Service needs a new look, and we are inviting you to design our new logo.

We are looking for a simple, striking image, which speaks the language of 13-17 year-olds, and which will attract more people to support the service. The image must be able to be reproduced onto leaflets, the web, social media, collection tubs, and stationery. Up for grabs is the prize of a 32” flat-screen TV!

Closing Date: April 30th 2016

Entries can be submitted to [email protected], or to Discovering Whittlesea magazine via the contact details on the first page.

Welcome to the Rotary Club of WhittleseyWhat is Rotary?Rotary is a service organisation of people from all walks of life, united worldwide, who help those in need, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and work toward world understanding and peace. Rotarians meet on a regular basis to enjoy each other's fellowship, and discuss ways to serve others.

We are also very much a local club, and since our formation in 1954, we have supported many local organisations and groups; for example, by way of grants to local schools and Life Education.

Share Your Skills by Volunteering for RotaryBeing part of Rotary is more than just giving back to the community by volunteering. It is also about you bringing your skills, experience and enthusiasm to help it thrive, whilst making some great friends along the way. Our club is a friendly place, which invites speakers from a wide range of backgrounds to share their knowledge, increasing our social and cultural understanding. Members also share a common interest in friendship.

We meet on Mondays (excluding Bank Holidays) at 6.15pm at The Falcon Hotel, London Street, Whittlesey, PE7 1BH. If you would like to join us, and/or would like more information about joining the Rotary Club of Whittlesey, please contact Laurence Seaton via email: [email protected].

We are also planning an open evening at 7:00pm, on Monday June 6th - if you would like to attend to meet members and learn more, we will be pleased to see you.

Calling all Young People – Your Chance to WIN a 32” Flat Screen TV!

On Friday March 4th, to coincide with the national ‘Clean for the Queen’ campaign, members of the Hereward Community Rail Partnership and Whittlesey Street Pride Group, along with representatives from Abellio Greater Anglia, Network Rail, and Railscape, joined forces to tidy up a disused area of Whittlesea Station. The area was cleared to accommodate a new raised bed, which will be planted and tended by the Community Rail Partnership, and the Friends of Whittlesea Station that is currently being established.

Councillor Kay Mayor, the Whittlesey Town Council representative from the Hereward Community Rail Partnership, said: “Clearing this area at Whittlesea Station is the first step of a longer term plan for a station garden, and we would like to thank everyone who turned up to support the event, especially the Whittlesea Pride Group.”

Alan Neville, Abellio Greater Anglia’s Customer Experience Manager, who helped on the day, said, “Everyone worked really hard, participating with enthusiasm and making a real difference in improving the overall appearance of the platform.”

Bespoke handmade curtains & blinds!

Due to the resounding success of the recent Angling Trust Winter League final, it is quite possible that the event will return to Whittlesey next year.

Despite a cold snap, most agreed it was a very good final, the only problem being the sheer

volume of cars that descended on Whittlesey, as anglers travelled to and from the event! The organisers are well aware of the need to address this issue.

With the rivers and fenland waters now closed to anglers until June 16th, many are now looking to local stillwaters for their weekly fix of angling. Big fish anglers will be looking to get booked in at East Delph Fishery, which has been transformed since James McKie took over. You will need to book online as pegs are strictly limited, but if big fish are your thing, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

For local angling clubs, Decoy Lakes is a very popular choice, and looking at recent results from the fishery, we can all see why. One hundred pound nets of fish have already been taken, and club matches regularly see anglers taking huge nets of carp. Kingsland Fishery is another very popular venue, with all three lakes in great form, and it is difficult not to catch well on any of them throughout spring and summer. It’s a water that allows you to fish surface baits, a very exciting way to catch carp off the top with bread or pellets.

Northey Park is also popular with lots of Whittlesey anglers. It’s a great place to fish at the weekend as, with very few matches held there, there is always plenty of room for the pleasure angler. Railway Lakes will start to fish well now that the really cold weather is behind us. The smaller lake is full of fish, ideal for those that fish the pole or waggler, while big fish anglers will head for the deeper of the two lakes; carp to 30lb+ have been taken, which is very good indeed for a day-ticket water. Float Fish Farm Fishery has a vast array of lakes on the expanding complex, from huge carp and cat fish, right down to a silver fish pool. From the novice just starting off, to the match angler, owner Dale Hudson has provided a fishery that every type of angler can enjoy.

This house is part of The Sick Children’s Trust, which

cares for children and their families whilst the child

is undergoing treatment in hospital. Benjamin, the youngest member of our four church congregations,

is undergoing treatment for cancer. This requires extensive periods of stay in Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Acorn House means that his parents can stay close

to him. Acorn House opened in 2000 and helps approximately 440 families every year. Situated within the hospital grounds, Acorn House is only minutes away from the wards and has been specially

designed to ensure access for those with disabilities.

Acorn House is open 365 days a year and can accommodate fifteen families a night. Rooms are allocated to families on a priority basis, and are offered completely free of charge. It is funded solely

by voluntary donations from individuals, companies

and charitable trusts. The cost of staffing and maintaining Acorn House amounts to approximately

£80,000 a year.

Acorn House has fifteen private family bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a communal dining area, a well-stocked playroom, a

shared living room and quiet room and full laundry

facilities. There are also direct telephone lines in all of the family bedrooms linking them to the hospital wards,

so that families can be contacted immediately in the

event of an emergency. Some of the funds we raise will be going to provide

toys and equipment for use on Benjamin’s ward. If you feel you can help by making a donation, either pass it to Nigel or Gill, or someone you know

who goes to one of our parish churches. Please keep this project in your prayers. We wish you a prayerful Advent and a Blessed and

Happy Christmas.Revd Nigel and Revd Gill.

During Advent and over Christmas this year our congregations are

going to be raising funds to support the work of Acorn House.

Predator anglers from across the country often pick out our local fenland drains as the venues they want to fish, regarding them as some of the best, if not the best, and most accessible in England. Despite a much milder than usual November, the British Pike Championship fished on Whittlesey waters produced the proof, if

indeed any were needed, that top quality action can be found on our doorstep. This year saw 220 anglers competing in this unique event. After a week of heavy rain, conditions were poor and the soggy wet banks were difficult in places. Many were unsure just how the drains would perform on the day; however, the unpredictable Glassmore Bank proved to be in very good form. Winner Chris Wade got off to a blistering start. Offering small roach dead baits, he tempted a ‘jack’ pike on his very first cast. The next hour

Runner-up was Rob Ellis with a 31lb 8oz total. Rob, who was also on the Glassmore section, put three pike to the scales which included the best fish of the day at 23lb 4oz. Rita Clarke from Peterborough, made it a hat-trick of wins in the ladies category with a solitary 5lb fish, taken early in the match

Southampton. Jack’s two fish total of 10lb 10oz also saw

him take second in section, nudging dad, Jason, into third

‘April showers’ are common, but don’t be deceived by sudden bursts of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly during dry, bright and windy days.

With longer days and stronger sunshine, growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather should give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens.

• Keep weeds under control Hand dig out weeds from your borders before they get out of control; then you will only need to hoe occasionally throughout the season. To suppress weeds, add a layer of bark to your borders.

• Sow hardy annuals Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants, such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and, once they are growing, put them outside when the weather is reliably warm, day and night.

• Increase the water given to houseplants Increase the watering of indoor and conservatory plants as the days lengthen. Check if plants need watering every few days.

• Feed hungry shrubs and roses Apply a general purpose fertiliser to beds and borders. Take care not to damage emerging shoots or to burn them with the fertiliser.

• Sow new lawns or repair bare patches Sowing new lawns or over-seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April onwards. Prepare the ground for sowing by digging, levelling and slightly firming beforehand.

• Prune shrubs, trees and hedges April is the perfect month to prune shrubs, trees and hedges before birds begin to nest. Remove foliage from any overgrown evergreen shrubs and cut back summer flowering shrubs such as hydrangeas.

• Divide herbaceous perennials Divide and transplant clumps of herbaceous perennials that have become too large for their space and those that are flowering poorly or have lost their shape.

GARDEN JOBS FOR APRIL

RhododendronAncient Greek meaning ‘Rose Tree’, the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help to brighten those difficult dark spots in the garden.

Rhododendrons prefer acidic soil in a sheltered position and, once established, require little attention apart from an annual mulch and occasional feed.

Reverend Nigel

| a Moment with Reverend Nigel

Gill retires in April, with her last Sunday service being held on Sunday April 3rd. This will be a service of Holy Communion in St Mary’s at 10.00 a.m. Gill will lead this service and preach, and a combined choir from St Mary’s, St Andrew’s and Holy Trinity will lead the singing. We look forward to welcoming many of you to this occasion. The service will be followed by refreshments and a presentation.

Gill has served the communities of Whittlesey, Coates and Pondersbridge for thirteen years. Our four congregations at St Andrew’s, St Mary’s, St Thomas’, and Holy Trinity have been blessed by her prayerful and thoughtful leading of worship, and her preaching. We have all benefited from the monthly prayer group which has met in her house. She has encouraged us all to keep prayer at the heart of all that we are, and all that we do. Our churches are open daily, and this is a due in large part to her determination in pursuing and supporting the project in the first place.

Many of you will have been supported by Gill’s pastoral ministry; meeting with her to plan and conduct weddings and baptisms, joyful occasions when she has been able to smile with you. She has also been at your side in times of bereavement, supporting you after a death in your family, assisting with funeral arrangements, and prayerfully conducting the service - sad occasions, when she has been able to share your tears.

Gill’s ministry has engaged with many groups in our community, in particular our schools and residential homes, which have come to know and appreciate her care and commitment. She has become a familiar presence with the British Legion, and within other church communities. Put quite simply, many people have cause to be grateful for Gill’s ministry.

Please join us on Sunday April 3rd, and share with us in thanking God.

Nigel (203676)

| Legal Corner by Susan Pearson – Managing Partner

PROBATEYou have just lost your life partner and you wander into the bank having mustered up the courage to utter the words that they have passed away, and the clerk asks you: “Will you be applying for Probate?”

What does this word Probate mean?

A Grant of Probate is a document which is produced by the probate registry when they are satisfied that the Will before them is the Last Will and Testament of the deceased.

The Executor(s) named in the Will are required to ‘swear an Oath’ that the document being submitted is the final Will of the deceased and that when the Grant is issued; they will administer the Estate of the deceased in accordance with the terms of the Will. The Executor(s) will also be required to complete an Inland Revenue Account.

The circumstances may be such that a Grant ofProbate may not be required, for instance when your bank account was joint or the deceased’ life insurance policy stipulates that the proceeds of the policy are paid directly to you.

When in doubt, ask a local solicitor who will be able to give you the expert advice you need.

If you require assistance or advice following the passing of a loved one please get in touch.

| Local History by Jack Harris

The Sir Harry Smith School opened in September 1953, with an official opening ceremony held on October 7th 1954. Amongst those in attendance was Alderman J. W. Payne, Chairman of the Isle of Ely Education Committee, whose speech at the ceremony made reference to the institution which had formerly occupied the site:

SIR HARRY SMITH SCHOOL: PART 3

“The school had been built on the site of an old workhouse, to which the old folk, wearied with the strain and stress of life, came with dread. But in place of that, we have planted this magnificent edifice, this attractive, inviting, alluring and spacious building, and in place of that building for the old, we have this structure to provide for the young.”

Around 870 people gathered for the occasion, and the general public was invited to tour the buildings the following day – Mr. Burgess, the head-teacher, noted that ‘thousands of people from all around the district availed themselves of the opportunity to inspect the premises.’

Designed by County Architect R.D. Robson, the new building was palatial compared to its Victorian predecessors, with capacity for 600 students, and 26 acres of grounds, complete

with playing fields, tennis courts, a pavilion, and gardens with greenhouse and tool sheds. The stair bannisters in the main halls were made with wood salvaged from Portland House, a 17th-century manor house which stood on the site of today’s Portland Place, and which was ruined by fire in 1949.

Construction of the school was planned in three phases: phase one, completed in 1953, provided the core layout and administration areas, but with noticeably few classrooms – the prefab HORSA huts, which as we saw last month, had housed classes at the SHS site before the building was even completed, were used as additional classrooms, with a third hut forming the canteen and kitchens.

Though Robson, the original architect, had drawn up plans for both the second and third phases in the 1950s, different designs were used when they eventually came to be built. The second phase of construction was finished in 1965, and saw the addition of more classrooms, a second science lab and housecraft room, two handicraft rooms, and the Sports Hall. Phase three, which comprised more

classrooms and another science lab, was added in 1972 to accommodate the raising of the school leaving age to sixteen.

Mr. Burgess retired in December 1970, making him to date the school’s longest-serving Head, and died in March 1972. His final entry in the Head’s log-book read:

“Mr. I. N. Burgess has taught for forty-five and a half years in this county and for thirty-eight years as a Head Master; thirty-three and a half years as a Head Master in his own home town of Whittlesey. He was appointed Head Master of the Sir Harry Smith School 1-3-1952 and retired 31-12-1970.”

WHITTLESEY WIMarch’s meeting was a most fascinating and entertaining evening, with Nicki Sly from Bramble Lodge explaining how she came to keep a herd of alpacas .The next meeting is on Tuesday April 5th, 7.30pm, at St Andrew's Church Hall, where we will be joined by Sue Welfare, who will explain about felt-making. New members are always most welcome - contact Ginny on 01733 205148.

The Whittlesey Disabled Club

The Whittlesey Disabled Club is a small self-funding social club, which runs every other Monday at St. John’s Ambulance Hall, from 2-4pm. Our members enjoy playing cards, dominoes, and bingo, and chatting with friends.

We have a small committee who serve tea and cakes during the afternoon, and occasionally a cooked lunch followed by entertainment. Organised coach trips to shows, garden centres and other places of interest are also arranged throughout the year. We are looking for new members to join us, and they would be made very welcome.

On Saturday April 23rd, we are running a fundraising event at the Ivy Leaf Club. This will be a Coffee Morning with various stalls, such as homemade cakes and tombola. We are looking for anyone who might be interested in booking a table to sell off any of their unwanted goods. The tables will cost £5 each, and can be booked by calling Pat on 01733 206534.

Message from The Royal British LegionOur annual Dinner Dance and Presentation evening was held recently at the Ivy Leaf Club, and was enjoyed by over one hundred members and non-members. This year, for possibly the first time ever, our Member of the Year Award went to two people.

Special congratulations go to Mrs. Mandy Smith and Mrs. Margaret Duller, pictured above left, for their outstanding work at our social functions, on Remembrance Day and with the Poppy Appeal. You have both kept us warm with your cups of tea and glasses of sherry, made us smile with your fantastic costumes, and kept us on the straight and narrow when we count the money for the annual Poppy Appeal. Well done to you both!

On the same evening, our Branch Standard was officially handed over from our retiring standard bearer, Mr. Steven Darby, to our newly elected standard bearer, Mr. Kevin McKevitt. A special certificate was presented to Steven, pictured above right, commemorating ten years of meritorious service carrying the standard with pride and dignity. Steven has actually represented Whittlesey at the Royal Albert Hall Festival of Remembrance twice! Our thanks go to Steven, and good luck and our best wishes go to Kevin for the future.

Although we do not normally use this report for obituaries, we feel that we should pass on our condolences to the family of Pauline Newman, who sadly passed away recently. Pauline, wife of our vice president Wally, will be sadly missed, and her ever smiling face, happy nature, and courage will continue to be an inspiration to us all.

We still meet at the Ivy Leaf Club, normally on the first Sunday of every month, with the meeting starting at 11.00am. If anyone is interested, please come along - you will be made most welcome.

Successful Month for Street PrideWhat a month March has been for our group!

During our bi-monthly meeting on Wednesday March 17th, the group was presented with a cheque for £930.00 by Councillor Eamonn Dorling. This was an allocation of the money left to the Council by Tesco. This will allow us to purchase a new lawnmower, hedge trimmer and other garden tools.

Street Pride supplied almost all of the workforce for the railway clean-up on March 4th. The area immediately behind the Cambridge-bound platform was cleared and raked over, in preparation for a garden area for people to enjoy whilst waiting for their train.

On March 5th, we litter-picked around the town centre as part of our participation in the national “Clean for the Queen” event. There was an excellent turnout of twenty-two members, who managed to collect eighteen bags of rubbish on a very cold and windy day. We also gained two new members on the day.

During the month, we received a ‘Level 5 Outstanding Achievement’ commendation certificate from the British Horticultural Society, for our gateway projects.

Would you like to join this successful team? If you can spare one hour on a Saturday morning, every two weeks, call or email Fred on 202874 or [email protected].

Whittlesey & District U3A has reached its first birthday, and at this month’s AGM, a fully elected committee will be tasked with moving the club onward and upward. Membership has continued to grow steadily, and we are now more than one-hundred- and-eighty-strong, with twenty-seven interest groups up and running.

A University of the Third Age is a learning co-operative of mainly older people, which enables members to share many educational, creative and leisure activities. Activities are organised mainly in small groups, which meet regularly, often in each other’s homes. Through sharing their knowledge, skills and experience, members learn from each other.

The U3A movement is growing internationally all the time; approximately fifty new U3As are started every year in the UK. They pursue an amazing range of topics; some academic, some practical and others recreational. The U3A approach to learning is ‘learning for pleasure’. There is no accreditation or validation, and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained.

U3A is the only national education organisation in the UK run entirely by its own members.

If you are reading our article for the first time, or are aware of our existence but have not yet ‘taken the plunge,’ why not come along to an open meeting? These are held on the third Thursday of each month, at Childers in Station Road. Here, you can meet us without commitment, enjoy a talk by our guest speaker, and see what’s on offer on our display boards. Please note that due to the recent AGM, this month’s meeting on the 21st will not have a speaker. Membership for the year is £17, which gives you access to all our activities. You need never feel lonely again, with lots of friendly members waiting to meet you and share with you their activities!

WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH WIIt was wonderful to welcome several new members to our February meeting.

The topic for the April meeting, with Bernice Hardwick, will be Hypnotherapy, and the members' competition is “relaxation tips”. This month's lunch date is Tuesday April 26th, with the time and venue to be confirmed at the meeting on Tuesday April 12th, at 7.30pm in St. Andrew's Parish Hall.

Looking ahead, May is National Walking Month, and to support this event and enjoy some fresh air and exercise, we are planning a local Heritage Walk on May 24th. This will be followed by a lunch get-together with members who aren't able to take part in the walk.

In June, the Ladysmith members will be celebrating our 45th birthday with a party and social evening.

New members and guests are always welcome to come along. Details are available from Sue on 01733 205927.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader PartnershipConsumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering

the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Whittlesea, Coates & Eastrea areas and manager Mark Sherwood

agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The vascular system consists of two interacting systems. The transportation of blood to the cells from the heart, via the arterial system, and the transportation of blood back to the heart from the cells, via the venous system. Blood is being pushed from the expansive heart chamber into a relatively narrow blood vessel (the artery) and, subsequently, the movement of fluid is chaotic, similar to a crowd of people crushed through a door. The movement of blood is not in a singular forward direction and unless something is done, it will crash and bang its way down the artery. This is undesirable for two reasons:

a) It is not energy efficient, as each bang against the side will waste energy [think of the extra force required to hit a squash ball to the main wall, via two walls, as opposed to directly]. This means it will not travel very far before it loses its forward momentum and stops flowing forward. Obviously, this is not the best situation for the cells furthest away from the heart.

b) The trauma from the high-energy multi-directional blood hitting the artery wall will lead to dents in, and erosion of, the inner lining. This can cause a range of problems later in life and is therefore best minimised.

The body does this by simply making the artery walls slightly elastic and thus expandable. As the high energy turbulent fluid enters the artery, its walls expand just enough to absorb some energy.

This calms the blood movement down, reducing the multi-directional movement to a more singular direction, termed laminar flow. This preserves the inner lining and reduces the probability of arterial damage.

The laminar flow of blood travelling in the artery will soon come across a number of branches or tributaries. As blood moves further away from its source, it loses energy and therefore slows down. If we pass that same volume of blood through an ever-decreasing diameter vessel, we can off-set this speed reduction and make it travel as far as possible. With each sequential tributary, we see a reducing vessel diameter until we reach the smallest tributaries, termed capillaries, which have a diameter of a single cell.

So to recap, the elastic nature of the arteries and the ever-decreasing diameter of the blood vessels ensure the blood can reach the furthest cell.

More to follow... next month.

The best way to prevent dental problems is with regular cleaning and professional check-ups Cleaning your pet’s teeth can be a challenge, especially if they are not used to having their teeth cleaned.

It's best to start when they are puppies and kittens, though it is a good time at any age. Most pets take a bit of time to get used to someone probing about in their mouth. Here are a few tips to follow:

• Get a pet friendly toothpaste. Human toothpaste contains fluoride which cleans teeth, but is not good for pets.

• Get a specially designed pet toothbrush. They come in different sizes for different types of pets.

• Get your pet comfortable with your hand or fingers being in their mouth. This is a gradual process, and you may want to start with your pet just licking some food or toothpaste off your fingers.

• Put some toothpaste on the brush. You can show this to your pet and encourage them to lick it off. This will help them get used to the brush being near their face.

• Brush a few teeth. You can do this with or without paste. Start with side teeth because the front teeth are sensitive and it can be uncomfortable. This can put your pet off before you have even started. Only do a few teeth at first and gradually work up to a whole side.

Although daily brushing is ideal, it can be a bit much for your pet. If you aim for twice a week you can help keep the problem down. You can do a different side each time - just don't forget which side you did yesterday.

• For uncooperative pets, you can get dental cloths/wipes. These will be softer, and although they won't be as effective as brushing, it can help reduce plaque build-up.

• There are also types of gel you can apply before your pet eats. This can help reduce the build-up of plaque too. There are special liquids you can add to drinking water, that can effectively reduce the build-up of plaque, and freshen their breath.

• You can also give your pets dental chews (low calorie ones are best), or pet food that specifically targets dental care.

Your pets' dental care is often overlooked, until there is a problem. If your pet has a toothache or sore gums, they may be dealing with stress and pain that you may not even know about. If a dental problem is left untreated, bacteria produced by the problem can enter the bloodstream and affect the body’s organs.

| Finance by Eamonn Dorling

As I’m sure you are already aware, we have right on our doorsteps, at Must Farm, Whittlesey, one of the most significant

archaeological sites in the world. The quality and quantity of finds from the Bronze Age site is staggering. Only qualified archaeologists are permitted to work there because the site is of international interest. The condition of the artefacts found enables those specialists from a range of universities to establish facts and probabilities about the individuals living there 3,000 years ago. They are skilled in identifying what they unearth and painstakingly reveal objects – that is one kind of specialist skill.

Another skill is the preservation of these finds. Having been covered in clay and water with the exclusion of air-borne bacteria, pollution and oxygen, the items uncovered can be examined; left in the open-air or in almost any other environment, many items could turn to dust (or sludge). The preservation of these artefacts is another specialist skill.

It is fascinating to understand the life-style that these people had all that time ago – just from what they left behind.

Turning to modern times, I regularly come across assets held by individuals, who do not understand their true worth. My work is to establish how an investment, pension policy,

protection plan or whatever, could make a contribution to the individual or family – understanding what has been uncovered by a full financial review.

The next job is to preserve the value of these assets in terms of value, tax efficiency and appropriateness for the circumstances. Some arrangements may have little value, others should be carefully protected.

Fortunately, you do not need to wait 3,000 years to benefit from past arrangements, but a review with an Independent Financial Adviser could be a good way to establish a workable lifestyle in your retirement.

NGNPUK FundraisingNGNPUK are a small group of friends fundraising for syringe drivers in the local Whittlesey area. They were prompted into action when, in 2013, local man David Jarrett needed one of these devices in the final stages of his battle with cancer. The machines manage pain by administering a steady stream of drugs, via a needle that is attached to the patient. David’s daughter, Louise Nicholls, started looking into the lack of drivers, and found that there were only two serving all of Whittlesey, Thorney and Eye.

Louise, her husband, and friend Samantha Carter set up NGNPUK to fundraise to supply more of these devices to the local area, so that no-one else has to wait as David did. Each device costs around £1400, and the aim is to supply at least one new driver per year. Last year, the three took part in a range of fundraising activities, including a 54-mile cycle sportive, an equestrian sale, and an appearance at a Christmas craft fayre. They finally had enough funds to purchase their first driver on October 2nd 2015.

More recently, NGNPUK received a grant from the Earl Fitzwilliam Charitable Trust, which enabled them to buy their second syringe driver. This was handed over to the community nursing team on February 24th, meaning that, in its first year, the group has managed to double the number of drivers available to the community.

Louise and the team would like to thank everyone who sponsored, donated and provided encouragement.

If you would like to make a donation or contact the group, they can be found on Facebook, or on their website: www.ngnpuk.weebly.com

Thank You from Pig Dyke Molly DancersPig Dyke Molly Dancers would like to thank the generous people of Whittlesey for the donations given for Macmillan Cancer Support. Each New Year's Eve, the Dancers make a tour of pubs and functions in Whittlesey, dancing and collecting for Macmillan. In February, they were able to hand over a £1200 cheque to a representative from Macmillan, all of which was raised from this collection, and from their carol singing. They were very proud to receive a framed certificate from Macmillan to commemorate their efforts.

All together they have collected over £17,000 for the charity. On behalf of the Pig Dyke Molly Dancers, thank you Whittlesey!

I was recently shown a short video that made me smile, and got me thinking about this month’s editorial. It featured a man who appeared to be a regular customer in a barber’s shop. The barber spoke emphatically about not believing that God existed. He gave a number of reasons for his opinion and kept repeating, “If God exists, why doesn’t He come to me, and why are things in such a mess?” The barber repeated his argument as the customer got up to leave, but the customer simply thanked him for the haircut, then left. Outside the shop, he noticed a young man with long, untidy hair. The customer took the young man into the shop, and said to the barber, “Barbers do not exist, and this long-haired young man proves it – if they did exist, this young man’s hair would not be in such a mess.”

Looking at him, the barber replied, “Of course they exist! It’s not my fault if people let their hair get into a mess - all they have to do is come to me.” At this moment the penny dropped, as the barber realised

his previous argument really had no credibility. “Exactly”, said the customer, as he left the shop.

My father was a heavy drinker and gambler until he encountered a life-changing experience with Jesus Christ. Upon reaching my teenage years I totally rejected God. Unlike the barber, my excuse was not the mess that the world, or people’s lives, were in - it was that those who went to church and said their ‘hallelujahs’, were really no different in their lifestyle to those who didn’t go to church.

As a hardened, angry young man, someone challenged me to go to church enough times to prove for myself whether or not God existed. I attached a condition to it, and only went in order to win the wager. Needless to say, I lost, as, like my father, I encountered a life-changing experience.

Give us a call, or better still, join us any Sunday at 10.45am. If nothing else, you will meet some great folks and receive a truly warm welcome.

This annual event has now become a firm favourite with the children and adults at Alderman Jacobs School.

This year, we all dressed up for the occasion and celebrated together as a whole school. During the day, the children were able to read and enjoy a variety of books, and teachers shared some of their “old favourites”.

In the evening our first Story Night was held, for which many of the children returned to school to listen to stories based on a theme. The children were able to have a little supper before returning home.

At New Road Primary School, our Key Stage 1 and Reception classes recently had a dress up day for their North and South Pole Geography topic.

Everyone dressed up as something found in the Arctic or Antarctic, and had lots of fun learning all about those regions.

The school was very lucky to receive a grant for new picnic benches from the Glassmoor Local Environment Fund. We would like to say a huge thank-you to them for thinking of New Road Primary School. We think the colourful picnic benches, made from recycled plastic, are a fantastic new addition to our playground, and our children will enjoy their lunch times even more.

The children and staff from Park Lane Primary & Nursery School recently celebrated World Book Day in fantastic style.

Whilst the children dressed as their favourite book characters - ranging from The Cat in the Hat to Harry and his Bucket Full of Dinosaurs - the staff dressed according to the theme of nursery rhymes and fairy tales.

The staff took part in a performance of ‘Once Upon a Fairy Tale’, which brought together many different characters, and told the story of how the Knave of Hearts found his true love.

Lorraine Quince, IT Support/Press Officer at Park Lane said: “This was a fantastic day expertly organised by one of our Year 2 teachers, Mrs Susan Low. Every year,

Mrs Low co-ordinates the day and writes a staff play, which our staff perform to the children.”

“The children got to walk the catwalk and show off their characters, while the teachers swapped classes to read to different year groups. A great day was had by all.”

A Very Big Thank You From Everyone At New Road Primary School

Every child and member of staff at New Road Primary School was delighted to be given a Whittlesey Christmas Lights Appeal pen. We would like to say a very big thank you to the

generous anonymous benefactor who thought about our school, bought the pens for us, and donated the money to the appeal.

Thank you very much from all of us, and the very best of luck to the Whittlesey Christmas Lights

Appeal.

Young Technicians is a Whittlesey-based club which offers young people hands-on training and experience in the sound, lighting and staging industry. Launched in February, the group runs a comprehensive training programme aimed at creating the next generation of sound and lighting engineers.

The club is run by business partners Pino Soccio and Mark Owen, who together provide a range of sound and lighting services through their recently-formed company Crystal Clear Productions. The pair created Young Technicians to pass on their skills and knowledge to local young people, and thus prepare them for future roles in the industry.

Two sessions are held each week: each Thursday, youngsters learn the theory behind a certain topic, before taking part in a practical session on either a Wednesday or Saturday, where they can put their recently-gained knowledge into practice. Training covers a wide range of topics, from sound engineering and lighting, to vital First Aid and Health and Safety information.

The club also offers members the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the real world, having established links with several venues and events - these include a theatre in Kettering, where students will be able to volunteer as stage technicians, and the well-known Willow Festival, where they will have the chance to provide technical support as interns.

As well as this, the Young Technicians are offered the chance to work with Crystal Clear Productions on various festivals, concerts and other events. The students of the Young Technicians Club will also plan and deliver their very own project, organising from scratch their own event to be held in October.

All Young Technicians tutors are DBS checked, and all appropriate First Aid certification and insurance is in place. Big support has come from St Andrew Masonic Lodge, who have provided the club with its premises for all its training days. Pino added: “We are very thankful to the members of the Lodge, for supporting both us and the local community in the creation of such an exciting new club.” Sessions are held in school term time at the St Andrew Masonic Lodge, in Woolpack Lane, Whittlesey, with membership open to anyone from Whittlesey and the surrounding areas. Anyone aged 11-19 with an interest in the industry is welcome, and previous experience is not necessary.

The times for each session are as follows: Wednesday: 6.00-8.00pm Thursday: 3.30-5.00pm Saturday: 9.30am-12.00pm

Mr Jan Neville(J. NEVILLE OPTICIANS)

Jan Neville is familiar to many Whittlesey residents as the owner of J. Neville Opticians, in Broad Street, which last year celebrated its tenth year in business.Jan, who was born and raised in Devon, has now been in the industry for over twenty years, having started out as a dispensing optician in Peterborough city centre.

He has been happily married for thirty-three years, and in his spare time enjoys squash and cricket, spending time with his family, and indulging his passion for classic cars.

| In the Hot seat1 WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOur ChILdhOOd?

Working and helping my father at the family-owned garage, serving petrol from the age of about ten. This sparked my interest in cars.

2 WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WhY?

My mother, who always stressed the importance of hard work, being a small business owner later in life.

3 WHICH TWO CHARACTERS (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY ShArING A MEAL WITh ANd WhY?

1 Ian Botham, my all-time sporting hero, as there would never be a dull moment with him.

2 My identical twin brother, because we lost him to cancer.

4 HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOurSELF IN JuST FIVE WOrdS?

Honest. Hardworking. Professional. Caring. Old!

5 IF THERE WAS ONE THING THAT YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT WHITTLESEY, WhAT WOuLd IT BE ANd WhY?

I think we could help to increase the variety of shops and businesses here, and therefore increase visitor numbers and footfall. For this to happen, we must maintain free town centre parking.

6 WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAr OLd YOu?

Work hard and enjoy life. However hard it gets, rewards will always come.

7 WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOr YOu?

Hopefully, continuing to be healthy, building the business further, and – eventually – retirement!
